from Brazil. That's all from the BBC | :00:00. | :00:10.
Good evening from the Great Yorkshire Show. | :00:11. | :00:20.
But this morning's show started off on a serious note when some | :00:21. | :00:23.
of Yorkshire's 3,000 beef producers staged a protest about what they | :00:24. | :00:26.
describe as rock bottom prices which are putting their livelihoods | :00:27. | :00:28.
And happiness is a total Gorgeous after their prize code played | :00:29. | :00:48.
matchmaker! Also, a green light for cleaner energy after Drax provides | :00:49. | :00:53.
new jobs. And plans to open up the hard shoulder of the water might | :00:54. | :01:02.
want will go ahead. It has been a wet afternoon here in Harrogate. | :01:03. | :01:04.
Join me life for the forecast. Good evening from the | :01:05. | :01:20.
Great Yorkshire Show. Just days after Yorkshire showed | :01:21. | :01:22.
the world how to stage a cycling event, we are hosting the country's | :01:23. | :01:25.
biggest agricultural show! It has been a brilliant time noticed | :01:26. | :01:36.
bite the weather. Just look at that scene. It really is remarkable. The | :01:37. | :01:38.
weather doesn't matter. More than a 130,000 visitors are | :01:39. | :01:41.
expected to make their way to the showground in Harrogate in the | :01:42. | :01:44.
next few days and there's something for everyone, from fantastic animals | :01:45. | :01:47.
to shopping to die for. But this morning's show started | :01:48. | :01:49.
off on a serious note when some of Yorkshire's 3,000 beef producers | :01:50. | :01:52.
staged a protest about what they describe as rock bottom prices | :01:53. | :01:56.
which are putting their livelihoods The National Farmers Union say that | :01:57. | :02:12.
prices have fallen by 60p per kilo in the last year. I'm joined now by | :02:13. | :02:19.
the livestock chairman from the National Farmers Union. Why are | :02:20. | :02:27.
prices so low? It is the same old dynamic of supply and demand. Supply | :02:28. | :02:32.
has increased dramatically. We face softer demand because of the mild | :02:33. | :02:36.
winter and because people are feeling the pinch in their pockets. | :02:37. | :02:40.
Eddie and to not be to stop supplying so much beef? We take | :02:41. | :02:48.
great pride in the beef we provide and we ask consumers to support our | :02:49. | :02:54.
product. Is it's not a case of people choosing not to eat beef | :02:55. | :02:57.
because they don't think it is a healthy option any more? Yes but | :02:58. | :03:05.
there are difficult factors in there. People do like to support red | :03:06. | :03:13.
meat. We enjoy the taste and the flavour and the good things and | :03:14. | :03:17.
provides in a diet. Give us an idea of what this is doing to farmers. | :03:18. | :03:22.
Low prices are undermining confidence. Beef is a long`term | :03:23. | :03:31.
production cycle. We need to get the confidence back and sustainability | :03:32. | :03:35.
to move forward. Every time we come to the Great Yorkshire Show there | :03:36. | :03:38.
seems to be crisis for farmers. How serious is this one for the 3000 | :03:39. | :03:46.
beef farmers in this county? It is very serious. We're losing up to 200 | :03:47. | :03:51.
pounds on every animal and confidence is at rock bottom. If we | :03:52. | :03:56.
can't change that, people will vote with their feet and leave the | :03:57. | :03:58.
industry and then there will be a shortage of beef. Quite simply, we | :03:59. | :04:05.
need British consumers to support us and buy British beef but we also | :04:06. | :04:08.
need retailers to play their part and differentiate our product from | :04:09. | :04:18.
imports. Buy British beef. Make sure that the labelling is correct and | :04:19. | :04:22.
support British beef farmers. Well beef prices may have fallen | :04:23. | :04:27.
but one Yorkshire farmer says food prices overall could rocket in the | :04:28. | :04:30.
next decade due to increasing demand 13% of the crop is now used | :04:31. | :04:33.
for the manufacture of biofuel, a cleaner alternative to fossil | :04:34. | :04:41.
fuels like coal and oil. But this, combined with new laws | :04:42. | :04:45.
on fungicides, means that high demand could clash with a reduced | :04:46. | :04:50.
yield and force up food bills. A healthy wheat crop on Lodge Farm | :04:51. | :04:53.
at Nunnington. Thanks to a summer of sunshine | :04:54. | :04:56.
and showers, it will be ready to So where does it go once sold to | :04:57. | :04:59.
a grain merchant? It is made into breakfast cereals | :05:00. | :05:04.
or flower for bread and cakes. Or it is taken to a factory to | :05:05. | :05:11.
be converted into ethanol. This pure alcohol is mixed with | :05:12. | :05:18.
petrol or diesel to form An increasing proportion of the UK's | :05:19. | :05:20.
wheat is now used as a source There is going to be huge demand | :05:21. | :05:27.
on more food and more fuel and I think these are the questions we | :05:28. | :05:34.
will be asking in 10 years, Well, we need to produce more | :05:35. | :05:37.
and we actually can't The UK grows 15 million tonnes | :05:38. | :05:43.
of wheat each year, 2 million That's 13% of the crop taken out | :05:44. | :05:52.
of food production. So you would think the answer is | :05:53. | :06:00.
simple ` grow more wheat so there Talk amongst farmers at the show | :06:01. | :06:03.
today is about new pesticides which, far from increasing them, | :06:04. | :06:09.
could halve yields. If we lose these crop protection | :06:10. | :06:14.
products or fungicides, we could see a reduction in yield | :06:15. | :06:19.
by at least 50%. That would present | :06:20. | :06:24.
its own problem to the household In time, | :06:25. | :06:27.
it might actually lead to import. According to the National Farmers | :06:28. | :06:34.
Union, Britain will have 7 million The demand | :06:35. | :06:36.
for wheat will only increase to fuel Let me show you the BBC compound | :06:37. | :07:01.
here. We are here in force. That is the World War I exhibition. Don't | :07:02. | :07:10.
miss that if you're coming. We've got the best seats in the house | :07:11. | :07:14.
because the BBC are on the presidential long looking over the | :07:15. | :07:18.
main ring. For those who were scared off by the rain, it is beautiful | :07:19. | :07:19.
now. The trial has begun of a man accused | :07:20. | :07:23.
of murdering a pizza delivery worker Thavisha Peiris, who was 25, | :07:24. | :07:26.
was on his last shift before he was due to start his dream job in IT | :07:27. | :07:30.
when he was attacked in his car. The jury heard he was a 'friendly' | :07:31. | :07:35.
and 'gentle man with no enemies'. Thavisha Peiris had only been in the | :07:36. | :07:48.
UK for two years. He had used his family savings to travel from | :07:49. | :07:52.
shuttle anchor to finish his degree in Sheffield. | :07:53. | :08:01.
He was studying IT and working in a pizza shop when he was attacked. Two | :08:02. | :08:15.
men were charged. The 18`year`old Kassim Ahmed pleaded guilty | :08:16. | :08:20.
yesterday. 20 sexual Shamraze Khan went on trial today `` 26`year`old. | :08:21. | :08:29.
The judge said it does not matter who inflicted the wind, North men | :08:30. | :08:37.
are responsible. The jury heard how the pair carried out a robbery | :08:38. | :08:41.
involving a knife in the city centre. The prosecution claims they | :08:42. | :08:45.
went on to attack Thavisha Peiris to steal his mobile phone. The jury | :08:46. | :08:51.
heard that Shamraze Khan watched Kasim Ahmed stab him in a frenzied | :08:52. | :08:58.
attack. He said he did not participate but did not dissing | :08:59. | :09:11.
courage. The jury said both men are guilty. It is a judgement that | :09:12. | :09:13.
Shamraze Khan denies. Drax power station is to receive | :09:14. | :09:16.
around ?240 million in European The money is | :09:17. | :09:20.
for a carbon capture and storage The gas will then be transported | :09:21. | :09:49.
through a pipeline It's called the White Rose Project | :09:50. | :09:52.
and will create more than 2000 jobs. Elsie Mowbray died eight days | :09:53. | :11:25.
after suffering head injuries in a confrontation with 33`year`old | :11:26. | :11:29.
Peter Harris in her home in York. Elsie Mowbray lived alone but her | :11:30. | :11:47.
son was with her that winter's morning when Peter Harris got into | :11:48. | :11:53.
her terraced home in your. On New Year's Day, Peter Harris forced his | :11:54. | :11:56.
way into Elsie Mowbray's home in York. As he was trying to leave, he | :11:57. | :12:04.
brushed past the 87`year`old. She fell, banged her head and died in | :12:05. | :12:08.
hospital eight days later. Peter Harris had a long list of offences. | :12:09. | :12:13.
He carried out a robbery at another home and hour after the incident at | :12:14. | :12:21.
Elsie Mowbray's house. Peter Harris in my eyes to the life of a | :12:22. | :12:26.
vulnerable lady in her own home, a leader who was fit and well and | :12:27. | :12:35.

bad effect on the family. There are specialist officers who are helping | :12:45. | :12:47.
them cope but the sentencing today, which we welcome, will help them in | :12:48. | :12:56.
some way to move on. Peter Harris had stolen to get cash to feed his | :12:57. | :13:00.
heroin habit. But what happened last New Year's Day but true, tragic | :13:01. | :13:06.
consequences for 87`year`old Elsie Mowbray. | :13:07. | :13:10.
A public memorial service is to be held at Leeds Town Hall to | :13:11. | :13:13.
The 61`year`old teacher was stabbed to death in front of a class | :13:14. | :13:18.
of children at Corpus Christi Catholic College in April. | :13:19. | :13:20.
The service will take place at midday on Monday the 29th | :13:21. | :13:23.
Members of the public are welcome to join invited guests to celebrate | :13:24. | :13:29.
Ann's life and her contribution to education in the city throughout her | :13:30. | :13:32.
teaching career, which spanned more than 40 years. | :13:33. | :13:37.
A controversial scheme to turn parts of the M1 hard shoulder | :13:38. | :13:40.
into an extra lane of traffic has been officially | :13:41. | :13:42.
David Crompton, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, | :13:43. | :13:50.
has previously said he thinks the plans are dangerous. | :13:51. | :13:55.
Faster journeys by 2016. That is the promise from the Government today as | :13:56. | :14:05.
it proves a controversial team in the south of our region. Along to | :14:06. | :14:10.
sections of the M1, the hard shoulder is going to be turned into | :14:11. | :14:15.
an extra lane. It will cost up to ?225 million and be finished by | :14:16. | :14:23.
2015. The second section will cost up to ?142 million and be open by | :14:24. | :14:31.
spring 2016. It is called a smart motorway. A control monitor the road | :14:32. | :14:37.
and use overhead signs to close lanes for accidents and breakdowns. | :14:38. | :14:45.
But the chief constable has told us he thinks it is dangerous. We | :14:46. | :14:53.
believe these proposals will be a contributor any serious accident or | :14:54. | :14:58.
someone dying on the motorway in South Yorkshire. That is why I | :14:59. | :15:03.
copied my letter to the Minister to the coroner in South Yorkshire. | :15:04. | :15:09.
Because I think they will be using an inquest from this. There is a | :15:10. | :15:15.
similar scheme on the M 62 but that differs in that the hard shoulder is | :15:16. | :15:19.
only used when there is congestion. The government believes the M1 plant | :15:20. | :15:26.
is safe and should reduce journey times. `` plan. | :15:27. | :15:31.
Leeds United have sold last season's top goal scorer, Ross McCormack, | :15:32. | :15:33.
The fee is thought to be in the region of ?11 million. | :15:34. | :15:38.
McCormack has told BBC Radio Leeds that he feels he's been 'hung out to | :15:39. | :15:42.
dry' over his move and that 'it's no longer the | :15:43. | :15:44.
It's been a frustrating day at Headingley where the rain meant | :15:45. | :15:49.
Yorkshire had picked up maximum batting bonus points this morning | :15:50. | :15:55.
The visitors reached 50 for one in reply before the rain came. | :15:56. | :16:07.
Luckily it is not raining in Harrogate. Let's go back to uni. `` | :16:08. | :16:16.
Amy. Sorry about the sound issues with | :16:17. | :16:41.
Amy. We will try to get back to them as soon as we can. | :16:42. | :16:50.
Now this year has not only been momentous for Steven and Katrina | :16:51. | :16:53.
but also for the entire region as Yorkshire hosted the grandest | :16:54. | :16:56.
But it's also a year of remembrance as we commemorate the centenary | :16:57. | :17:00.
At the Great Yorkshire Show the BBC's World War One at Home | :17:01. | :17:04.
exhibition is providing a hands`on way to remember | :17:05. | :17:06.
and also find out what our own relatives did for King and country, | :17:07. | :17:09.
A bit of drilling from the sergeant major, I think. | :17:10. | :17:14.
So let me give you a quick whizz around. | :17:15. | :17:30.
This is the military hospital, some horrible injuries there. | :17:31. | :17:37.
If you want to be a war reporter, that will tell you how you can do | :17:38. | :17:41.
But I am really interested to find out what my family did in the war. | :17:42. | :17:46.
Did you manage to find out anything about the Grations in the | :17:47. | :17:49.
We found some information on your grandfather. | :17:50. | :17:52.
It is quite a sad story because he didn't have good health | :17:53. | :17:55.
at all but he did serve in the army for a number | :17:56. | :17:58.
of years until his health became so bad he had to be discharged. | :17:59. | :18:01.
Basically, this resource will make people's eyes open when they | :18:02. | :18:04.
Absolutely. We have had some amazing experiences here this morning | :18:05. | :18:11.
People get very emotional when they realise what effect | :18:12. | :18:16.
the conflict had on their family. It's remarkable. | :18:17. | :18:19.
I?ve enrolled in the war but I think a lot of people, when they make | :18:20. | :18:23.
their way to the Great Yorkshire Show, will want to come here | :18:24. | :18:27.
The great Yorkshire show is mostly about animals. But it is also about | :18:28. | :18:52.
romance for my guests. You could say they are newlyweds | :18:53. | :18:56.
having got married at the end I brought a code called Gorgeous and | :18:57. | :19:10.
Katrina took a shine to it. Katrina really late Gorgeous and approached | :19:11. | :19:18.
me about selling her. I said there was a condition, but I would get a | :19:19. | :19:24.
date! She agreed, I think is to get my heifer, but I won her over and | :19:25. | :19:36.
blossomed. This isn't Gorgeous because she has a sore foot, but she | :19:37. | :19:41.
played a big part in your wedding day, didn't she? Because she got us | :19:42. | :19:49.
together I really wanted for their on the day. The guests could see | :19:50. | :19:54.
photos of horror, the reason my BR together. Why was she not allowed at | :19:55. | :20:00.
the church? Which she had eaten the flowers? She just wasn't allowed on | :20:01. | :20:07.
the grounds. I think it was just the policy. She probably would have | :20:08. | :20:15.
fitted down the aisle! Ishii paired Ari heifer? `` if I have no dinner, | :20:16. | :20:28.
I know that Gorgeous is getting her dinner! So I don't know if she is a | :20:29. | :20:36.
pet or a friend. She was actually born from an embryo, wasn't she? She | :20:37. | :20:49.
was. Stephen implanted the embryo and bred Gorgeous from it and then I | :20:50. | :20:58.
bought her. The Great Yorkshire Show a special for you because you fell | :20:59. | :21:01.
in love here, but what are the highlights. Seeing people you don't | :21:02. | :21:08.
see from one year to another. It's like a drug, you can't get the | :21:09. | :21:13.
passion out of your system. We have a passion for livestock and that's | :21:14. | :21:19.
why we came back. The Great Yorkshire Show is a great place, it | :21:20. | :21:25.
is lovely. That is why I moved to Yorkshire. It is where your romance | :21:26. | :21:33.
blossomed. What would you see is really special about the Great | :21:34. | :21:38.
Yorkshire Show? The livestock, definitely. Everything is so | :21:39. | :21:42.
traditional here. It is my local show no. `` now. She came all the | :21:43. | :21:56.
way from Ireland to get here. Hopefully Gorgeous and this one will | :21:57. | :22:09.
get back together now. Beef farmers are putting their livelihoods at | :22:10. | :22:13.
risk. What is your reaction? How are you finding trade? It is getting | :22:14. | :22:18.
difficult. Katrina knows more about it than I do. It is really hard. | :22:19. | :22:24.
People don't realise how far Hamas are getting it. The weather, like | :22:25. | :22:33.
today, it's raining. You never know how things are going to go. People | :22:34. | :22:40.
don't realise it is a seven days a week job. You can't go on holidays, | :22:41. | :22:47.
you have two stay with you livestock. Thank you so much for | :22:48. | :23:00.
chatting to us. I'm sure Gorgeous will have a special place in your | :23:01. | :23:02.
hearts. Something funny just happened. Paul | :23:03. | :23:14.
was positioned over their and we had a technical hitch, so we got him to | :23:15. | :23:18.
run across here as fast as he could! Have a look over there. That | :23:19. | :23:32.
is the type of cloud we have had here. It will be giving someone | :23:33. | :23:35.
downpours to the south of Harrowgate. We can show you pictures | :23:36. | :23:44.
of what it was like. A beautiful morning but then the heavens opened. | :23:45. | :23:48.
Exhibitors like it because people come in to buy food and umbrellas so | :23:49. | :23:58.
it is not bad business! Those downpours caused some localised | :23:59. | :24:02.
flooding and there have been really big showers in Nottinghamshire into | :24:03. | :24:07.
the North Midlands and southern parts of South Yorkshire. There are | :24:08. | :24:12.
still there but things are improving. If you have a showers | :24:13. | :24:21.
this evening but they are fizzling out. `` a few heavy showers. | :24:22. | :24:33.
Overnight, it looks set to be dry with good clear spells. It has been | :24:34. | :24:40.
breezy here which will bring patchy fog, but temperatures will be as low | :24:41. | :24:50.
as 11 Celsius. Wednesday looks like the best day of the Great Yorkshire | :24:51. | :24:53.
Show. There will be a lot of sunshine around. As we head into the | :24:54. | :25:01.
afternoon, it will tend to cloud over from the east and the coast | :25:02. | :25:06.
might see patchy rain. Further west, it is fine. We could have gills | :25:07. | :25:18.
along because tomorrow evening `` deals along the coast. There is a | :25:19. | :25:26.
bit of uncertainty about rain on Thursday. As it stands, it will push | :25:27. | :25:33.
westwards through Thursday morning so I think that could be rain at the | :25:34. | :25:40.
showground. On Thursday afternoon, the rainbow clear eastern areas | :25:41. | :25:50.
towards the coast. Stay tuned to the forecast. For Friday and Saturday, | :25:51. | :26:07.
we will bring in some warm air. There is likely to be a scattering | :26:08. | :26:13.
of underage showers. If you're coming to the Great Yorkshire Show, | :26:14. | :26:19.
tomorrow is the way to do it. What do you think about that cloud? | :26:20. | :26:26.
There's an old friend of ours down there Ken Morrison. We've had a bit | :26:27. | :26:35.
of fun this afternoon. We had a competition between Paul's team and | :26:36. | :26:42.
Amy and I. We got all this food from the stalls for ?10. It cost us 50p | :26:43. | :26:55.
