We can understand why someone would try to harm a guy like that. | :01:06. | :01:09.
We get reaction from Sheffield and hear from his family in Sri Lanka. | :01:10. | :01:11.
Under investigation ` the Metropolitan Police is asked to | :01:12. | :01:16.

We'll be live in Sheffield for the city's Grand Prix where | :01:31. | :01:33.

The farmers are loving this weather. Join me for the detailed forecast. | :01:45. | :01:58.
First tonight, to the two men facing life sentences for the murder | :01:59. | :02:01.
of a student originally from Sri Lanka who was killed on his last | :02:02. | :02:05.
Thavisha Peiris had come to Sheffield to pursue his dream job | :02:06. | :02:11.
After three days of deliberation, the jury at Sheffield Crown Court | :02:12. | :02:16.
found 26 year old Shamraze Khan guilty of murder. | :02:17. | :02:19.
Another man, 18`year`old Kasim Ahmed, | :02:20. | :02:23.
A dramatic afternoon at Sheffield Crown Court. After 14.5 hours of | :02:24. | :02:37.
deliberation, a jury decided by a majority of ten to two that Shamraze | :02:38. | :02:47.
Khan was guilty of murder. It was a story that attracted international | :02:48. | :02:51.
headlines. For one family on the other side of the world, Creek | :02:52. | :02:56.
continues. The dream of a better life taken for the sake of a mobile | :02:57. | :03:05.
phone. 25 years old, Thavisha Peiris left to deliver his final pizza of | :03:06. | :03:10.
his final shift. It was October 27 and after finishing his degree he | :03:11. | :03:14.
was ready to start a new job. Instead he was attacked by Kasim | :03:15. | :03:19.
Ahmed and Shamraze Khan. They try to take his phone before repeatedly | :03:20. | :03:21.
stabbing him and leaving them to bleed to death. Two and a half weeks | :03:22. | :03:28.
ago, Kasim Ahmed pleaded guilty to murder and admitted to robberies | :03:29. | :03:34.
earlier the same evening. Shamraze Khan admitted the robberies but said | :03:35. | :03:37.
he did not partake in the attack on Thavisha Peiris nor did he encourage | :03:38. | :03:41.
it. But the prosecution said the men were jointly responsible. They had | :03:42. | :03:49.
been out together in Sheffield city centre and committed to robberies | :03:50. | :03:53.
with a knife. They were both acting then when they committed the robbery | :03:54. | :03:56.
so we had to conclude that they were acting together at the murder. We | :03:57. | :04:03.
got assistance from members of the public around the scene. Ultimately, | :04:04. | :04:10.
we recovered a lot of property including keys that had been stolen | :04:11. | :04:19.
from Thavisha Peiris's vehicle. His family believe the country was safe. | :04:20. | :04:24.
Tomorrow, the men who murdered them will find out what the sentence will | :04:25. | :04:25.
be. Six weeks after Thavisha Peiris' | :04:26. | :04:27.
death, his family invited our reporter Kate Bradbrook to | :04:28. | :04:30.
their home in Sri Lanka, They were struggling to cope with | :04:31. | :04:32.
the idea that such a kind and generous person, suffered such | :04:33. | :04:38.
a violent and sudden death.In Kate's exclusive report, | :04:39. | :04:41.
we hear more from the family, and also for the first time, from | :04:42. | :04:45.
Thavisha's colleague and housemate. Thavisha Peiris was just 25 | :04:46. | :04:50.
when he was stabbed to death He was on his last shift | :04:51. | :04:54.
and last delivery working for Domino's pizza when he was | :04:55. | :04:59.
attacked here in Southy Crescent. His parents, Vajira and Sarath, live | :05:00. | :05:06.
here, 8000 miles away in Colombo. Last year they invited me into their | :05:07. | :05:13.
home to give their first interview. They told me they were struggling to | :05:14. | :05:20.
cope with the loss of their youngest son, who they had sent to the UK for | :05:21. | :05:23.
what they thought was a better life. TRANSLATION: I feel that the whole | :05:24. | :05:32.
world has been destroyed after TRANSLATION: I keep waking up and | :05:33. | :05:35.
thinking about him. If I try to eat something, I think of him, so I | :05:36. | :05:43.
can't eat. I can't take being TRANSLATION: We thought sending him | :05:44. | :05:46.
to the UK was the best decision. His education would have been | :05:47. | :05:57.
international, his job would be international. It was hard bringing | :05:58. | :05:59.
the boys up. It was a lot of love and sacrifice all wiped out. Now we | :06:00. | :06:02.
have no hopes for the future. Thavisha had been studying | :06:03. | :06:14.
at Sheffield Hallam University. He was working at Domino's to pay | :06:15. | :06:16.
back money he had borrowed from his parents, but was about to start a | :06:17. | :06:21.
dream job in IT when he was killed. For his cousin, it came as a shock | :06:22. | :06:26.
that someone as mild`mannered He was someone who was first to | :06:27. | :06:29.
speak, first to smile, first to crack a joke at a family | :06:30. | :06:36.
gathering and, unfortunately, the first to die. Maybe he was too | :06:37. | :06:41.
good for this world. In school, if there was any trouble | :06:42. | :06:47.
and people were fighting, he would just say, calm down. He | :06:48. | :06:52.
would be the peacemaker. He would be | :06:53. | :06:54.
the one mediating to stop a fight. I would say he is such | :06:55. | :06:57.
a human being. Thavisha's funeral was | :06:58. | :07:09.
a traditional Buddhist ceremony. Hundreds followed the coffin to its | :07:10. | :07:14.
final resting place in Sri Lanka. Many | :07:15. | :07:19.
around the world sent messages of In Sheffield, | :07:20. | :07:21.
his colleague and housemate reflects on the last time he saw him | :07:22. | :07:28.
just hours before he died.I can't understand why someone would | :07:29. | :07:34.
try to harm a guy like that. He was so kind, he always | :07:35. | :07:40.
had something to talk about. He was very funny. He was always | :07:41. | :07:43.
fun. Although | :07:44. | :07:54.
the legal process may now be over, Thavisha's family say nothing will | :07:55. | :07:56.
ever make up for the loss of their I think it is a nice comfort for us, | :07:57. | :07:59.
knowing that they are getting Next tonight, to controversial | :08:00. | :08:09.
comments made on Twitter by Bradford MP David Ward, who said | :08:10. | :08:34.
if he lived in Gaza he would He's escaped disciplinary action | :08:35. | :08:37.
by the Liberal Democrats but one Conservative MP has reported | :08:38. | :08:42.
him to the Metropolitan Police Our political editor Len Tingle | :08:43. | :08:45.
reports. His words were called vile | :08:46. | :08:52.
by the Labour Party, damaging by the Conservatives, | :08:53. | :08:54.
and even his own party threatened On Twitter last night, | :08:55. | :08:57.
Bradford MP David Ward posed the question that, if he lived in Gaza, | :08:58. | :09:02.
would he fire a rocket at Israel? In the House of Commons yesterday, | :09:03. | :09:06.
I condemned violence on both sides. I am not condoning it, | :09:07. | :09:15.
I'm just saying we have to understand the mindset of people who | :09:16. | :09:21.
are firing rockets out of Gaza. They know for certainty that it will | :09:22. | :09:28.
be retaliated by the Israelis in the That qualification was aimed at the | :09:29. | :09:31.
growing number of groups campaigning By this afternoon, the | :09:32. | :09:38.
Liberal Democrats said their MP had unreservedly apologised to anyone | :09:39. | :09:43.
who might have mistakenly thought he So he won't face disciplinary | :09:44. | :09:46.
action from his party. David needs to recognise that these | :09:47. | :09:52.
are not the comments of a well thought`through and | :09:53. | :09:59.
respected individual such as he is. He needs to recognise | :10:00. | :10:04.
the offence these have caused, to withdraw the comments | :10:05. | :10:06.
and fully delete them from Twitter. But tonight, the rocket posting, | :10:07. | :10:11.
together with another appealing to support the Palestinians, | :10:12. | :10:13.
was still online. One furious Conservative MP said he | :10:14. | :10:16.
was reporting David Ward to the The inside track ` | :10:17. | :10:19.
Tanya takes a look around the Athletes' Village in Glasgow | :10:20. | :10:29.
ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The hunt for a man wanted | :10:30. | :10:37.
in connection with the murder of a guesthouse landlady is now | :10:38. | :10:40.
in its fifth day and police still This afternoon, they revealed more | :10:41. | :10:44.
about where John Heald was staying in Bridlington when Bay Carter was | :10:45. | :10:50.
stabbed to death, as their searches Our crime correspondent is in Wath | :10:51. | :10:53.
tonight with the latest. We do have a major manhunt. Two | :10:54. | :11:19.
police forces in Yorkshire. I am in South Yorkshire, where John Heald is | :11:20. | :11:22.
believed to have spent most of his life. This afternoon, we saw the | :11:23. | :11:28.
start of the deployment of many officers who are going out to cover | :11:29. | :11:32.
a very wide area of South Yorkshire in the hunt for John Heald. 150 | :11:33. | :11:39.
police in the hunt. Some armed, being briefed this afternoon. John | :11:40. | :11:46.
Heald is being sought after Bay Carter was stabbed to death in the | :11:47. | :11:49.
guesthouse she ran in Bridlington. It is thought he might be trying to | :11:50. | :11:59.
lie low. He is already being sought in connection with a sex attack in | :12:00. | :12:05.
Sheffield in July. It was a targeted serious sexual assault. We cannot | :12:06. | :12:10.
give information as we are protecting the victim. We are | :12:11. | :12:16.
carrying out that investigation in line with this one. Today, the hunt | :12:17. | :12:21.
on the ground. South Yorkshire Police have already received well | :12:22. | :12:26.
over 200 calls in connection with their hunt for John Heald. Just one | :12:27. | :12:29.
coal has led to officers searching these woods. In this area where John | :12:30. | :12:39.
Heald has lived for most of his life, police were trying to calm | :12:40. | :12:49.
public fears. I kept getting up and looking through the window. I didn't | :12:50. | :12:57.
get much sleep at all. I do hope people will continue to support each | :12:58. | :13:02.
other. We are aware that there are people who are frightened at this | :13:03. | :13:12.
time. John Heald had book into the hotel in Bridlington last Thursday. | :13:13. | :13:16.
His keys, similar to this set are now missing. The ground is being | :13:17. | :13:21.
searched for the keys and clues in the hunt for the missing John | :13:22. | :13:27.
Heald. Police are saying to things. They want all the help they can get | :13:28. | :13:30.
from the public, any sightings at all. They have stressed that also, | :13:31. | :13:38.
if anybody is hiding John Heald, they must give them up immediately | :13:39. | :13:42.
because that in itself is a serious criminal offence. | :13:43. | :13:47.
Now, it showcases the silver screen and over the years the | :13:48. | :13:50.
Bradford International Film Festival has grown into one of the UK's most | :13:51. | :13:53.
It's been held at the National Media Museum in the city | :13:54. | :14:02.
since 1995 and has a reputation for introducing rising talent. | :14:03. | :14:05.
But it's also welcomed some big names from the industry like | :14:06. | :14:08.
Lord Attenborough, John Hurt, Jean Simmons and Ken Loach. | :14:09. | :14:16.
And in 2009, on the strength of the festival, it was designated UNESCO's | :14:17. | :14:20.
first City of Film, an honour it only shares with Sydney, Australia. | :14:21. | :14:22.
UNESCO promotes inter`cultural understanding between nations. | :14:23. | :14:28.
So is the curtain about to fall on Bradford International Film | :14:29. | :14:30.
Here's our business correspondent Danni Hewson. | :14:31. | :14:37.
For 20 years, Bradford International Film Festival has rolled out the red | :14:38. | :14:44.
carpet. But next year's event is cancelled at least for the time | :14:45. | :14:49.
being. The museum is undertaking a review of its festival offer. It | :14:50. | :14:55.
says any statement that the purpose is to protect the future and cruel | :14:56. | :15:00.
audiences. But the former director of another festival now absent from | :15:01. | :15:06.
the museum's calendar fears that reviews only go one way. Reviews, | :15:07. | :15:11.
and my opinion, are always a bad sign. They usually resort in events | :15:12. | :15:16.
being cancelled. It is quite laughable that ever since the city | :15:17. | :15:29.
was given the status,. Any loss would be a blow to the museum which | :15:30. | :15:34.
escaped closure last year. It would also damage Bradford's status. But | :15:35. | :15:44.
projections say this review is an opportunity. There are new cities | :15:45. | :15:53.
joining the UNESCO network. It is going from strength to strength. Now | :15:54. | :16:00.
is the right time to review film festivals and see how to improve | :16:01. | :16:06.
them. In context, visitor numbers are dwindling and the museum is | :16:07. | :16:14.
still vulnerable. Worry about the future of one of its most procedures | :16:15. | :16:17.
events is real. Police investigating | :16:18. | :16:20.
the disappearance of York chef Claudia Lawrence have | :16:21. | :16:21.
arrested a man on suspicion of Meanwhile, a team of at least seven | :16:22. | :16:24.
police vehicles and a dog handling unit have spent today searching a | :16:25. | :16:28.

due to close. We understand that proposals would not have raised the | :17:42. | :17:46.

details on our late bulletin. A Grand Prix in South Yorkshire ` | :17:49. | :17:55.
we're live in the city as Britain's cycling elite descend for one of | :17:56. | :17:58.

tomorrow, we expect Yorkshire to Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee | :18:11. | :18:14.

after their respective first and third placed finishes at the | :18:20. | :18:21.
recent world cup race in Hamburg. For Jonny, it's a chance to get one | :18:22. | :18:27.

but he is on good form as well. It's going to be tough | :18:37. | :18:40.
but I'll give it my best. To get a medal would be great, | :18:41. | :18:43.
it's the main event of the year and that something I want to do | :18:44. | :18:46.
in my career, Olympic medallist, for us and, before things get | :18:47. | :19:03.
underway tonight, she's been for a Yes, | :19:04. | :19:06.
among others she's been speaking to our top badminton player and the | :19:07. | :19:12.
chef who's cooking up some Scottish Day by day | :19:13. | :19:15.
the village is filling up, each The athletes seem to be settling | :19:16. | :19:20.
in well and getting and the girls have been painting | :19:21. | :19:26.
and have been playing cards a lot, The athletes are moving towards | :19:27. | :21:11.
the limits of human performance. We are trying to eke out | :21:12. | :21:13.
those marginal gains. This type | :21:14. | :21:15.
of area is what delivers that. It is about making sure that | :21:16. | :21:19.
athletes stay as well If a problem does happen, | :21:20. | :21:22.
we treat it early, We can move people on the podium | :21:23. | :21:25.
and off the podium, but importantly The athletes are here, | :21:26. | :21:30.
the venues are ready. An estimated 1.5 billion people will | :21:31. | :21:35.
be watching as Glasgow hosts Now we all know just how big | :21:36. | :21:38.
a turn`out Yorkshire gave to Well tonight we've got another major | :21:39. | :21:54.
cycling event in our patch ` Yes, the city centre has been | :21:55. | :21:59.
transformed into a cycle racetrack, But tonight there is even more of | :22:00. | :22:11.
a special occasion about it, tinged Paul Ogden is live 'on the barriers' | :22:12. | :22:16.
and can tell us why that is. Sometimes you make pronouncements on | :22:17. | :22:30.
this job that you really don't want to make. I am afraid to say that | :22:31. | :22:32.
here tonight at the Sheffield Grand Prix, it is going to be Dean | :22:33. | :22:38.
Downing's final competitive race at the young age of 39. What brought | :22:39. | :22:44.
this on? I'm getting tired, getting old. It's been in the planning for a | :22:45. | :22:49.
long time since the end of last year. I sat down with the boss and | :22:50. | :22:53.
told him that I was going to retire in 2014. I wanted to retire in | :22:54. | :23:01.
Sheffield. I'm a local boy, a proud Yorkshire lad. I went to Sheffield | :23:02. | :23:07.
Hallam University. My family are all here tonight. It's the perfect | :23:08. | :23:13.
ending for myself. You're still winning races. We see me on the | :23:14. | :23:22.
podium quite a lot this season. Could you give another couple of | :23:23. | :23:28.
seasons? You're tempted, aren't you? Not really, no! I nearly retired in | :23:29. | :23:35.
2012 when I was and another team but it was all for the wrong reasons. I | :23:36. | :23:39.
had a really bad season and had been ill. To retire on a high is always | :23:40. | :23:45.
what I wanted. It's never easy, you have to plan the training. I am | :23:46. | :23:51.
getting a little bit older but I have a beautiful family which takes | :23:52. | :23:58.
up my time. My daughter is five and my son who is four months old. They | :23:59. | :24:02.
make not know what is going on but it will be great to see them before | :24:03. | :24:07.
and after. I was hoping I could squeeze two more years in but I only | :24:08. | :24:16.
have one hour and ten minutes! What is your impression of the state of | :24:17. | :24:23.
Yorkshire 's cycling? In my eyes, it is the time to retire and get | :24:24. | :24:27.
involved with other things. A maze, do your job! There are a lot of | :24:28. | :24:38.
opportunities for cycling as a whole. I'm looking forward to | :24:39. | :24:44.
getting involved with what the right can in 2015 `` whatever I can. There | :24:45. | :24:54.
