normal temperatures. Peter, thank you. That is all from me. Now on BBC

One Welcome to Look North. On the

:00:00.:00:00.

programme tonight: Care workers in Doncaster begin

:00:00.:00:00.

a two`week strike over pay They look after people with learning

:00:00.:00:15.

disabilities ` but say their pay This is the third month, with the

:00:16.:00:30.

cuts that I've not been able to pay the rent.

:00:31.:00:33.

We'll be talking to their employer Care UK.

:00:34.:00:36.

York's free Wi`Fi ` does logging on mean giving up some

:00:37.:00:40.

A bumper crop for Yorkshire's farmers `as the hot weather brings

:00:41.:00:44.

There has been more cloud around but changes are afoot. Join me for the

:00:45.:00:54.

latest. It's becoming one

:00:55.:01:05.

of the most entrenched privatisation On one side

:01:06.:01:12.

the care workers employed by a private company to look after

:01:13.:01:15.

adults with learning difficulties. They say pay cuts mean they can

:01:16.:01:18.

barely cover basic costs of living. On the other side, Care UK,

:01:19.:01:21.

the company involved, says Doncaster Council has set the

:01:22.:01:23.

budget ` and its hands are tied. When this latest walkout ends,

:01:24.:01:26.

345 days will have passed since the battle over pay began

:01:27.:01:28.

last September. And workers will have been

:01:29.:01:31.

on strike for 48 of those days. That?s roughly one in every

:01:32.:01:35.

seven days for almost a year. As Tom Ingall reports,

:01:36.:01:40.

it's a dispute that shows no signs What we want? Fair pay! The start of

:01:41.:01:58.

another strike of Care UK workers. In search of a pay rise. This woman

:01:59.:02:07.

has worked in health care since she was 16 and she is passionate about

:02:08.:02:13.

her cause. This is what's left of my life after 15 years. She has

:02:14.:02:18.

recently had to leave her home and now lives in a box room. You want

:02:19.:02:30.

owning is not? No, I am losing money. This is the first month with

:02:31.:02:35.

the cuts and I can't afford to pay rent so I had to get out. Given that

:02:36.:02:44.

you say you are out of cash because you don't live with your parents,

:02:45.:02:48.

why are you choosing to support a day of strikes? It is a bigger

:02:49.:02:56.

picture. We all love the NHS and we don't want to end up like America

:02:57.:03:05.

where we pay. And we care. Relations between the Unison and Care UK have

:03:06.:03:08.

been strained since the company took over the provision of some services

:03:09.:03:14.

in Doncaster. The union want the employees to receive the minimum

:03:15.:03:19.

wage. They should negotiate to rent `` to get a good standard of pay for

:03:20.:03:24.

their staff. Will it affect the people? It will eventually because

:03:25.:03:32.

these people behind me have many years skill and service. They are

:03:33.:03:37.

already applying for jobs outside Care UK. So their skills be lost.

:03:38.:03:43.

But even those who took the payments taped up their mouths of this

:03:44.:03:47.

morning. This issue was about more than how much they get paid. `` they

:03:48.:03:50.

take their mouths up this morning. Earlier I spoke to Chris Hindle,

:03:51.:03:54.

the Director of Disability Learning Services

:03:55.:03:56.

for Care UK, and I put it to him that the company knew it would have

:03:57.:03:59.

to cut pay as the contract was worth ?7 million and the wage bill alone

:04:00.:04:02.

was ?6.8 million. It is a statement of fact that

:04:03.:04:11.

whoever was commissioned to provide this service would have had to do so

:04:12.:04:16.

at a reduced budget. The budget was set by Doncaster Council and whoever

:04:17.:04:20.

was awarded the contract would have had to reduce costs. Even the

:04:21.:04:24.

previous provider went on record to say that they would have had to do

:04:25.:04:29.

exactly the same. Care UK has made those reductions but have done so in

:04:30.:04:35.

a way that has protected jobs and protected the final salary pension

:04:36.:04:40.

scheme. We are protected people's basic pay. There have been no

:04:41.:04:45.

reductions to basic pay. We are also offers people a transition period

:04:46.:04:48.

for salaried rejection for that period. The union say that you have

:04:49.:04:55.

cut allowances. They have a 14 month transition period, but thereafter

:04:56.:04:58.

they will be worse off. One person said that she would be ?400 a month

:04:59.:05:05.

worse off. The reality is that Doncaster Council set a

:05:06.:05:09.

significantly reduced budget. We have to deliver within that budget

:05:10.:05:12.

and have had to make decisions. We have tried to minimise the effect on

:05:13.:05:19.

people by protecting basic pay and membership of the generous pension

:05:20.:05:24.

scheme. We have protected jobs by making redundancies. We have also a

:05:25.:05:27.

transition payment which means that people in those `` people who have

:05:28.:05:32.

accepted that will not receive a pay cut for 14 months. Clearly, your

:05:33.:05:38.

company is in the business of making profit from care. What about the

:05:39.:05:42.

adults in your care, are you satisfied that they are receiving a

:05:43.:05:45.

decent level of service given that many people will want to leave your

:05:46.:05:51.

employment? I'm satisfied that we are giving a good quality of

:05:52.:05:56.

service. We are improving quality of service. Doncaster Council did not

:05:57.:05:59.

only want the servers to be delivered within a reduced budget

:06:00.:06:03.

but also wanted to see continuous improvement through the life of the

:06:04.:06:08.

contract. Care UK has already made positive changes and will continue

:06:09.:06:13.

to do that against the backdrop `` against the backdrop of these

:06:14.:06:18.

unfortunate industrial disputes. Could you live on ?7 an hour? That

:06:19.:06:25.

is not the matter, the fact is that Doncaster Council budget has been

:06:26.:06:29.

set and Care UK has had to deliver the service within that budget. We

:06:30.:06:34.

have set wages to be affordable within that reduced budget. Briefly,

:06:35.:06:40.

any sign of resolution here? Candi two signs get around a table? We

:06:41.:06:48.

wanted keep a dialogue open with Unison but the percentage increase

:06:49.:06:52.

they want does not seem reasonable or sensible to me. So we are open to

:06:53.:06:57.

having those discussions and we would like to do that. Actually, the

:06:58.:07:02.

pay review date for a number of our staff is not until October this year

:07:03.:07:06.

and we will be factoring in these considerations. Thank you. Next,

:07:07.:07:18.

concern over Yorkshire's Wi`Fi. People are concerned it was

:07:19.:07:25.

hoovering up private information. We are being assured that

:07:26.:07:28.

information is being secure and kept safe.

:07:29.:07:35.

Don't be deceived by York's entered attractions. This is a modern city,

:07:36.:07:40.

one of the first in the country to offer free public Wi`Fi. But being

:07:41.:07:44.

at the cutting edge can have its difficulties. The scheme is under

:07:45.:07:49.

scrutiny. Let's give it a try. To use the service, I have to log on

:07:50.:07:54.

and register either by filling in an online form or by Facebook or

:07:55.:07:59.

Twitter. The signing `` the registration involves giving away

:08:00.:08:02.

personal information including my name, my e`mail address and the type

:08:03.:08:08.

of device I'm using. If you register through Facebook or Twitter anything

:08:09.:08:12.

displayed on your social media accounts is available to the service

:08:13.:08:17.

provider. It is what happens to that information which is causing

:08:18.:08:22.

concern. Privacy campaigners fear it could be used to track our movements

:08:23.:08:26.

and they are suspicious about big companies wanting to know so much

:08:27.:08:33.

about us. We don't know why they need to know our names and our

:08:34.:08:37.

friends names. And the more data that you take the more opportunity

:08:38.:08:41.

there is to abuse it. There should be more restrained about what

:08:42.:08:45.

information is taken and we should be a lot more cautious about signing

:08:46.:08:49.

up to these things until we fully understand what will happen to the

:08:50.:08:54.

data. But your council wants to reassure us. It says that the

:08:55.:08:58.

service is similar to what is offered already in coffee shops and

:08:59.:09:01.

the council's use of data is controlled by law. We have to keep a

:09:02.:09:07.

certain amount of information to comply with data protection. That is

:09:08.:09:10.

stored securely and is not being used. The service provider except

:09:11.:09:19.

that in future, things could change. If we want to expand, local

:09:20.:09:23.

businesses will be offered opportunities to target walking ``

:09:24.:09:26.

customers walking by their shops with offers of cheap coffee or a

:09:27.:09:30.

free doughnut so we will fund that through advertising. This technology

:09:31.:09:36.

is so new that nobody knows how it will play out in future. So whether

:09:37.:09:41.

you embrace it or choose not to engage with it at all, is ultimately

:09:42.:09:44.

up to you. So ` no wholesale hoovering up

:09:45.:09:49.

of personal data in York. But could that change `

:09:50.:09:52.

what can we expect in the future? To help us understand more

:09:53.:09:56.

about data harvesting here is Gavin Wheeldon from Purple Wi`Fi which

:09:57.:09:59.

installed the software for the York Gavin, make that a bit clearer. If

:10:00.:10:17.

Purves 's letters `` if privacy settings are open on Facebook and

:10:18.:10:20.

you are going to be logging on through Facebook, it seems rain

:10:21.:10:26.

truce. If you think about the weather today, you're probably logon

:10:27.:10:30.

through Facebook. All we are doing is what has already happened in the

:10:31.:10:38.

web. It is an ease of logging. But people understand what is happening?

:10:39.:10:42.

They go to York to shop and there is all those information in the terms

:10:43.:10:47.

and conditions, they go on for ever and they are mind`boggling. Do

:10:48.:10:51.

people understand all the people just say yes because they want the

:10:52.:10:55.

scheme. It is the same if you look at Google or Facebook, any of the

:10:56.:11:00.

services. If there is `` if you want to use a free service, there is a

:11:01.:11:06.

trade. Wi`Fi has a lot of legal obligations around it as well.

:11:07.:11:09.

Making sure that we have got that data is important. There is a quid

:11:10.:11:15.

pro quo, no commercial enterprises will provide this service for the

:11:16.:11:20.

council without some payback. Absolutely. There is a cost to the

:11:21.:11:24.

access point, for the connectivity. There is no such thing as free

:11:25.:11:30.

Wi`Fi, somebody is paying for it. By giving over data, we were able to

:11:31.:11:36.

put out timely and local offers from businesses. A loss of us find it

:11:37.:11:42.

quite annoying, don't we? If you live in York city at 11pm, we know

:11:43.:11:47.

that you like Peters and you probably will want to shop York and

:11:48.:11:53.

you will get it 20% discount at a pizza shop, is that relevant?

:11:54.:11:59.

Probably, yes. Can data be sold on? Can they sell it to third parties?

:12:00.:12:06.

No. How do we know that, how do we have guarantees. Data is collected

:12:07.:12:12.

for analytical and legal purposes. It is not taken to be sold on

:12:13.:12:18.

wholesale. It can be used for advertisers to advertise you

:12:19.:12:22.

specifically when you are in York with adverts. So if they want to

:12:23.:12:25.

beat males of a particular age that are in a particular place at that

:12:26.:12:31.

time, then that data can be used to send that targeted information. What

:12:32.:12:35.

they will not receive is your e`mail address and contact information. It

:12:36.:12:41.

is used for those purposes. Is it happening elsewhere, other cities?

:12:42.:12:48.

Public Wi`Fi and citywide Wi`Fi is becoming more common. Everybody

:12:49.:12:52.

expects Wi`Fi and if you take York as the example, you have got 7

:12:53.:12:56.

million tourists every year. The minute they come out of that train

:12:57.:12:59.

station, the first thing they are going to do is look for Wi`Fi. It is

:13:00.:13:05.

an amenity, people expect it but nobody is repaired to pay for it. So

:13:06.:13:09.

there needs to be an exchange of value. And that value is, I know Li

:13:10.:13:14.

Hua, I know you are here, I will send you something relevant. Thank

of courage in the face Ian Pratt from Barnsley was

diagnosed with motor neurone Since then he's dedicated his

life to raising awareness of the We?ve spoken to him before

when he began recording videos Now he's just returned from the Isle

:18:20.:18:23.

of Wight where fundraisers have completed a swim across the Solent

:18:24.:18:28.

in his honour. Ian joins us

:18:29.:18:41.

in the studio now. How you doing, Ian? Not too bad.

:18:42.:19:01.

Where were you first diagnosed. It was ten days after her second

:19:02.:19:06.

birthday. And you decided to raise awareness and start doing something.

:19:07.:19:12.

Absolutely. As soon as I was diagnosed, it was important get into

:19:13.:19:18.

the community. I'm struggling a bit of my voice... We need to raise

:19:19.:19:21.

awareness of the condition because a lot of people still don't know what

:19:22.:19:27.

it is. Tell us about the swim. Some people decided to swim in your

:19:28.:19:32.

honour? A good friend of mine on the Isle of Wight did a swim about two

:19:33.:19:41.

years ago and others asked me if they could swim in my honour for

:19:42.:19:48.

next year. So this year, we have done it with 22 swimmers swimming

:19:49.:19:56.

the Solent. We can also see people in kayaks there as well. There were

:19:57.:20:04.

22 swimmers, 22 `` 27 kayaks and safety vessels looking after these

:20:05.:20:09.

wonderful people. What an incredible thing to do. We can see your young

:20:10.:20:14.

daughter Georgie very excited to be in the studio! What about the impact

:20:15.:20:19.

on families, it can be quite difficult to deal with. How has it

:20:20.:20:24.

impacted on your life? It has impacted on every part of my life.

:20:25.:20:31.

And Georgie Arnaz as well. We live and breathe it. I held Ian in most

:20:32.:20:37.

of his tasks so it consumes me. And the video recording is a legacy for

:20:38.:20:45.

Georgie? Yes, and she will enjoy it as she grows older. She will be

:20:46.:20:51.

watching these! The videos will be wonderful. Ian, very inspiring to a

:20:52.:20:59.

lot of people, what is next? Spring next year, the swim next year they

:21:00.:21:06.

will have 24 people. It looks like they will be having two events. Just

:21:07.:21:14.

amazing. Thanks Ian and Catherine. And Georgie has gone off with our

:21:15.:21:17.

floor manager! He is looking after her.

:21:18.:21:23.

hot weather means many farmers across Yorkshire have started

:21:24.:21:26.

It's a welcome turn of events for farms that had crops ruined during

:21:27.:21:31.

Our correspondent Len Tingle has been to meet one farmer in Thirsk

:21:32.:21:55.

They have never seen this in Yorkshire usually

:21:56.:21:58.

We should be starting the harvest next week.

:21:59.:22:01.

All the more surprising is that these

:22:02.:22:04.

were the fields a year ago after a winter and spring of torrential

:22:05.:22:07.

If you go back to winter 2012, we would have been waist deep in water.

:22:08.:22:12.

This year, we had a wet winter but we got off quite lightly

:22:13.:22:18.

Then we have had a perfect weather pattern.

:22:19.:22:21.

We have had rain, sunshine and at present,

:22:22.:22:23.

The combine harvester is already at full throttle after several years

:22:24.:22:30.

that saw crop yields down by a third, the worst in living memory.

:22:31.:22:35.

Mike Wilkinson should know, both his dad and grandad grew crops

:22:36.:22:39.

So with the sun finally shining, what is he looking forward to?

:22:40.:22:45.

A normal year, to be honest. As simple as that.

:22:46.:22:49.

The trouble is, from your point of view, you are

:22:50.:22:52.

It may not stay that way. That's farming.

:22:53.:22:57.

At last a smile on the face of arable farmers.

:22:58.:23:02.

And what will it take to keep it there?

:23:03.:23:04.

They tell me at least three more weeks of fine weather.

:23:05.:23:08.

They have all got their fingers crossed.

:23:09.:23:23.

For many Yorkshire owners, one of the great pleasures of some is

:23:24.:23:33.

walking their dog. But for this dog, Alfie he had a grass allergy.

:23:34.:23:39.

He and his owner came `` overcame it with a stylish solution.

:23:40.:23:46.

This is Alfie and he is a lively chat. A lively boy. But he would not

:23:47.:23:55.

have been able to enjoy this who until recently because he has a

:23:56.:24:04.

grass allergy. How bad was his problem? Pretty bad, you have sold

:24:05.:24:09.

all over his chest and down his back. He has still got a little bit

:24:10.:24:17.

of the rash (it is better isn't it as Mac is much better. Even that is

:24:18.:24:22.

much improved from what it was. At least he can come out and enjoy

:24:23.:24:26.

himself. He is not as sore and itchy and miserable. He is very happy. A

:24:27.:24:35.

happy chap and very lively. We are enjoying life again. Where do you

:24:36.:24:42.

get it from, what is it? It is a Lycra bodysuit. This is the only one

:24:43.:24:51.

they have in stock. Can you could not get this in the UK? No, you have

:24:52.:24:57.

to order from America. Is it expensive? Not prohibitively. $58.

:24:58.:25:04.

And it has made a huge difference to Alfie. Huge. We didn't go out for

:25:05.:25:10.

three weeks at one point. He can come out and play and be happy.

:25:11.:25:18.

Thank you very much. A simple and stylish solution which means Alfie

:25:19.:25:21.

can enjoy the fields with the rest of us. Where was his one the? I

:25:22.:25:32.

don't know. But he would look cute in it.

:25:33.:25:37.

I have a wolf bodysuit, actually. Let's have a look at these pictures.

:25:38.:25:53.

Thank you for these pictures. Keep them coming in. The weather is

:25:54.:26:02.

deteriorating over the next few days. It looks very unsettled.

:26:03.:26:08.

Tomorrow, some bits and pieces of rain over the Pennines further east

:26:09.:26:11.

it is set to be dry and bright toward the coast. The front has

:26:12.:26:16.

brought thicker cloud this afternoon. There have been one or

:26:17.:26:22.

two showers. There is brightening towards the north and west.

:26:23.:26:28.

Overnight mostly dry with broken cloud with a few spots of rain

:26:29.:26:37.

coming into Pennine areas later. The sun rises in the morning at these

:26:38.:26:41.

times. And these are the high water times. There is a West is split.

:26:42.:26:54.

Western areas having more clout and some rain. As a general rule, to the

:26:55.:27:03.

east of the A1, it is fine. But the further west you go the cloudier it

:27:04.:27:13.

is. These are the top have `` temperatures. A risk of showers

:27:14.:27:26.

spreading from the West but the weekend looks much more unsettled.

:27:27.:27:29.

The risk of showers and even some long spells of rain.

:27:30.:27:35.

That is not so good. Thank you, Paul. Back at ten defies PM I am

:27:36.:27:42.

cropping up in about 11 hours for the breakfast shift.

:27:43.:27:46.

`` back at 10:25pm. I leave the ashram, travel halfway

:27:47.:27:58.

across the world to find my father, Oh, well. As Vashrati says,

:27:59.:28:02.

gotta keep smiling! We don't tend to use the bathroom

:28:03.:28:10.

together here. All right, well,

:28:11.:28:13.

I'll catch you later. This ashram of yours,

:28:14.:28:15.

it might be a cult. I take it back,

:28:16.:28:18.

he's definitely Cuckoo's son. MUSIC: "Changing"
