to be lower than average. Make sure you pack your jumpers if you are | :00:00. | 3:59:59
going away. Facing ?60 million cutbacks ` | :00:00. | :00:00.
a thousand jobs, free buses, leisure spending and markets all | :00:00. | :00:13.
at risk as Kirklees Council tries We've been here as a business since | :00:14. | :00:16.
1954. It is our bread and butter. We'll find out just how | :00:17. | :00:28.
realistic the cuts could be. A warning that rail passengers | :00:29. | :00:30.
could face higher fares and fewer It's his story day on the railway. | :00:31. | :00:35.
Find out why. And we had a mix of sunny spells and | :00:36. | :00:52.
scattered showers. I'll be back with your forecast. | :00:53. | :01:02.
First tonight, to the biggest cuts Kirklees Council has ever faced. | :01:03. | :01:06.
1000 jobs are under threat as the local authority looks to save ?60 | :01:07. | :01:12.
Even the council leader said today that services run by the council for | :01:13. | :01:16.
People living in the area can now have their say on | :01:17. | :01:23.
Batley and Birstall markets could close. | :01:24. | :01:29.
The council describes them as 'loss`making'. | :01:30. | :01:33.
Free town buses in Dewsbury and Huddersfield could also be axed. | :01:34. | :01:37.
And all but two museums would be closed, with funding also being cut | :01:38. | :01:40.
A pretty grim picture, as our political editor Len Tingle | :01:41. | :01:45.
Brian Bailey knows a thing or two about cuts and not just from the | :01:46. | :01:57.
decade he spent slicing ham. His store here has been in the threat of | :01:58. | :02:02.
closure several times since the public spending cuts started and | :02:03. | :02:09.
it's now in the firing line again. We've been here as a business since | :02:10. | :02:17.
1954. It's a busy market for us. Bradley in West Yorkshire has had a | :02:18. | :02:22.
market in its square since before the Victorian buildings. Birstall | :02:23. | :02:29.
has its twin. Both are run by Kirklees Council. They say that rent | :02:30. | :02:35.
for the markets don't meet costs. There are now on a list of potential | :02:36. | :02:42.
closures to help find savings. Local stallholders don't see it that way. | :02:43. | :02:49.
It's a bit of a shock. It's my livelihood. Nobody has had the | :02:50. | :02:53.
decency to let us know what is going on. Potential savings will start | :02:54. | :03:03.
months of meetings before budget decisions are made. It has never | :03:04. | :03:06.
been done this way before but other councils are likely to follow its | :03:07. | :03:12.
lead. The council's conservative opposition has a different view. You | :03:13. | :03:20.
don't have to close all our markets and children's centres. New | :03:21. | :03:27.
affecting the way we run services. We should be working with our | :03:28. | :03:30.
community to make sure that we get proper decision`making. There is a | :03:31. | :03:36.
long way to go before decisions are made. The only thing that is clear | :03:37. | :03:40.
is that, unless these cuts are made, councils like this will finish up | :03:41. | :03:48.
being technically brown cropped `` bankrupt. | :03:49. | :03:55.
Well, earlier we spoke to Councillor Keith Wakefield, who's the leader of | :03:56. | :03:58.
neighbouring Leeds City Council, and I began by asking for his reaction | :03:59. | :04:01.
It's not usually my remit to talk about enabling authorities. I think | :04:02. | :04:14.
Kirklees Council are one of the first of many who will do so over | :04:15. | :04:19.
the next few months, mentioning the scale of the challenge they have. We | :04:20. | :04:25.
have all faced tough decisions. Some may be tougher than Kirklees | :04:26. | :04:30.
Council, some maybe not as tough, so you really feel for colleagues in | :04:31. | :04:33.
the public sector who are making difficult decisions like that. How | :04:34. | :04:39.
do you feel about what you're going to have to do? There are big | :04:40. | :04:43.
challenges and we have to stay determined and do everything we can | :04:44. | :04:48.
to protect the vulnerable people like we have done your last few | :04:49. | :04:52.
years. But it is not an easy challenge and I can't guarantee | :04:53. | :05:00.
that. Tour de France started in Leeds. Is the city reaping the | :05:01. | :05:07.
benefits? There's no doubt that the response we have had from the people | :05:08. | :05:11.
of Leeds and Yorkshire has given us a tremendous boost. What we had was | :05:12. | :05:21.
the best marketing exercise, advertising that money can't buy. | :05:22. | :05:24.
Millions on the streets, people immensely proud and emotional about | :05:25. | :05:30.
what we achieved together. And you've got ambitious plans. You're | :05:31. | :05:34.
talking about the Commonwealth Games. You mad? No. It's the result | :05:35. | :05:43.
of this being a huge success and people feel a sense of pride. When | :05:44. | :05:47.
you go through austerity, people like to come out and happy day | :05:48. | :05:53.
forgetting all the challenges and problems `` have A.D. , and | :05:54. | :06:03.
celebrate success. People think we should bet for the Commonwealth | :06:04. | :06:08.
Games. We had a call this morning for someone who thinks we want to | :06:09. | :06:14.
bid for the Ryder Cup. We've had people say, keep going, be | :06:15. | :06:17.
ambitious, because that's what we really need in times of austerity. | :06:18. | :06:22.
There's the money there to do all this? We have to go to the | :06:23. | :06:27.
Government and partners, but the determination is there. We want to | :06:28. | :06:32.
make sure that Leeds and Yorkshire can look forward to big, world`class | :06:33. | :06:34.
events. Now, there have been more | :06:35. | :06:38.
developments this afternoon in the investigation into | :06:39. | :06:40.
Sir Cliff Richard, which is being The veteran pop star has denied any | :06:41. | :06:42.
involvement in a historical child sex allegation | :06:43. | :06:45.
that led to officers searching his Police have reacted to criticism | :06:46. | :06:48.
of the way their search Dan Johnson is outside police | :06:49. | :06:52.
headquarters in Sheffield Officers emphasising that this | :06:53. | :07:07.
investigation is still in its early stages. It was a surge that lasted | :07:08. | :07:13.
about five hours at Cliff Richard's penthouse apartment in the secluded | :07:14. | :07:20.
development in Berkshire yesterday. Officers recovered a number of items | :07:21. | :07:26.
that they have been examining today. After that search was publicised to | :07:27. | :07:30.
media, a number of people have come forward to provide information. We | :07:31. | :07:33.
don't know any more about who those people are what the nature of the | :07:34. | :07:37.
information is, whether it relates to the allegation or not. | :07:38. | :07:43.
It's not exactly clear. We've heard nothing more from Cliff Richard | :07:44. | :07:54.
since yesterday. The event relates to an event in Sheffield in 1985. It | :07:55. | :08:00.
was the preacher from the United States holding an event here. It's | :08:01. | :08:08.
about sexual assault on a boy who was under 16 at the time. But | :08:09. | :08:13.
Richard said yesterday the allegation was completely false. We | :08:14. | :08:19.
understand he is still in Portugal, there has been activity there today | :08:20. | :08:23.
at his villa but he said he would cooperate fully and officers want to | :08:24. | :08:30.
speak to him, he is willing to do that. | :08:31. | :08:33.
The children whose lives have been changed thanks to a special burns | :08:34. | :08:37.
The RMT rail union is warning that rail passengers across Yorkshire | :08:38. | :08:45.
could be facing higher fares, fewer train services and cuts to | :08:46. | :08:49.
They say those are some of the ideas outlined in a consultation | :08:50. | :08:58.
document about the future of the rail network in Yorkshire. | :08:59. | :09:00.
For a decade, two companies have operated the bulk of train services | :09:01. | :09:12.
in Yorkshire. Next year, both will be readvertised for a new ten year | :09:13. | :09:21.
period. The Government wants to get a cut price railway. | :09:22. | :09:41.
The whole thing starts off by saying we have to learn to do a lot more | :09:42. | :09:47.
with a lot less. We already have some of the lowest investment in | :09:48. | :09:51.
real ways in the North. We had to have fears that are affordable for | :09:52. | :09:59.
local people. I don't believe that this particular document does any of | :10:00. | :10:05.
that, it feels on every point. As the Government says, Northern Rail | :10:06. | :10:10.
receives large amounts of public money, the most subsidised in the | :10:11. | :10:15.
country, with just 66% of revenue coming from passengers. They point | :10:16. | :10:28.
to a station Lakes last week `` like this. It attracts 200,000 passengers | :10:29. | :10:37.
every year. It is very much the responsibility of Government in the | :10:38. | :10:42.
first place to say, we are going to invest so that over time, the actual | :10:43. | :10:48.
running costs of franchises like Northern Rail will come down. | :10:49. | :10:52.
Otherwise, you will end up having to pay at the same levels of subsidy, | :10:53. | :11:00.
so you do need to make a change. The tone of this controversial document | :11:01. | :11:05.
is that the North can't have everything. Passengers can get new | :11:06. | :11:09.
trains and stations, but fares will rise significantly under may be less | :11:10. | :11:13.
staff employed. No decisions have been made yet. The consultation on | :11:14. | :11:16.
the future closes on Monday. So the railways | :11:17. | :11:21.
in Yorkshire are already costing There are some interesting figures. | :11:22. | :11:40.
Every passenger goes ten kilometres, the government is putting in 70p. If | :11:41. | :11:52.
you can pay to the big operators, it goes through some of the richest | :11:53. | :11:57.
areas and there is no subsidy. People are paying a lot more for | :11:58. | :12:00.
their real fears in the south of England. `` rail fares. They say | :12:01. | :12:20.
there are rail electrification is a good investment. Over 20 or 30 | :12:21. | :12:23.
years, you reap the rewards of that. That gets to the heart of what | :12:24. | :12:29.
this consultation is about, investment, subsidy, and who should | :12:30. | :12:31.
foot the bill. A man charged with the murder | :12:32. | :12:37.
of a woman in Sheffield has appeared The body of 39`year`old Anayat Bibi | :12:38. | :12:40.

in Sheffield Magistrates' Court He was remanded in custody | :12:46. | :12:49.
and is due in Sheffield Crown Court Two other men, | :12:50. | :12:53.
aged 83 and 20 remain on police bail Barnsley College could be hit | :12:54. | :13:00.
by a strike. The University and College Union | :13:01. | :13:07.
says some staff have been forced out, others have had to take jobs on | :13:08. | :13:11.
lower pay grades, while others still It says the move is | :13:12. | :13:14.
a botched money`saving measure. Now they're balloting union | :13:15. | :13:18.

Minster were sold today. The 14th century oak was damaged in a fire 30 | :13:34. | :13:37.
years ago. The auction has become an annual event as old pieces of the | :13:38. | :13:44.
Minster are sold off to pay for a ?20 million restoration project. | :13:45. | :13:49.
Children whose lives have never been the same again due to severe burn | :13:50. | :13:52.
injuries are benefiting from a voluntary service, set up to | :13:53. | :13:54.
The Burns Club is based at Pindersfields Hospital | :13:55. | :13:57.
in Wakefield, but is helping young people from across our region. | :13:58. | :14:00.
It's a chance to make new friends, discuss their problems, | :14:01. | :14:02.
But a warning that you may find some of the images in Kate Bradbrook's | :14:03. | :14:06.
13`year`old Khalid is one of many young patients being treated | :14:07. | :14:17.
here at Pinderfields Hospital for burn injuries. | :14:18. | :14:23.
The main focus for him is physio and rehabilitation but, | :14:24. | :14:27.
while the physical wounds will eventually improve with treatment, | :14:28. | :14:31.
for children, the emotional scars can take longer to heal. | :14:32. | :14:37.
Aidan, also 13, suffered 60% burns in a house fire which claimed | :14:38. | :14:42.
He's been left with brain damage and attends a special school. | :14:43. | :14:51.
He also comes here to the hospital for the Burns Club, an opportunity | :14:52. | :14:59.
He sees other people with injuries the same as his | :15:00. | :15:03.
He joins in with everybody, he loves it. | :15:04. | :15:08.
The club is run entirely by volunteers and, | :15:09. | :15:10.
as well as regular meetings, it also organises residential camps. | :15:11. | :15:16.
It all costs money, which is raised through donations. | :15:17. | :15:20.
It takes up to ?30,000 per year to run the Burns Club. | :15:21. | :15:24.
It does help them because they just talk about their burn injuries, | :15:25. | :15:28.
how they had the accident, how they are managing with the treatment | :15:29. | :15:33.
For families like Aidan's, the service has been a lifeline. | :15:34. | :15:40.
They'll never forget the trauma they have suffered, but | :15:41. | :15:42.
Ringside seat ` we're with Sheffield boxer | :15:43. | :15:57.
Kell Brooks as he prepares for his world title fight in Los Angeles. | :15:58. | :16:07.
And find out why I have been having a very good today. | :16:08. | :16:19.
Onto cricket and it's day one of Yorkshire's County Championship | :16:20. | :16:21.
Yorkshire won the toss and put the visitors in to bat. | :16:22. | :16:31.
Boxing now and it's nearly crunch time, or should that be punch time, | :16:32. | :16:41.
for Sheffield boxer Kell Brook who fights for the world title in | :16:42. | :16:44.
The welterweight is up against American Shawn Porter | :16:45. | :16:48.
for the IBF title and Shamir Masri has been given exclusive access to | :16:49. | :16:52.
Boxing in the US is a very popular sport. | :16:53. | :17:00.
As soon as Sheffield's Kell Brook arrived at this media workout, | :17:01. | :17:04.
The press were taking a close look at him. | :17:05. | :17:11.
He's been joined by his dad Terry, mum Julie, and partner Lindsay. | :17:12. | :17:18.
It's like being at home, all familiar faces. | :17:19. | :17:20.
We are a few days away now, so it's about keeping chilled, relaxing | :17:21. | :17:23.
His opponent for Saturday is IBF world titleholder, Shawn Porter. | :17:24. | :17:35.
He had an interesting warm`up routine, a form of head... | :17:36. | :17:37.
At Thursday's press conference, three world title fights took | :17:38. | :17:45.
centre stage, with Porter versus Brook topping | :17:46. | :17:47.
You can tell from the press conference, the pressure is building | :17:48. | :18:00.
Shawn Porter is a character of the sport but will there be plenty of | :18:01. | :18:05.
action to keep UK fight fans a week into the early hours of Sunday? | :18:06. | :18:08.
If you ain't out of your seat and clapping, | :18:09. | :18:14.
I plan to do everything right to the best of my abilities on Saturday | :18:15. | :18:19.
night and I hope the fans in the UK will be rooting for me or Kell. | :18:20. | :18:23.
I hope they stay up and tune in, because it's going to be a treat. | :18:24. | :18:32.
Both men are unbeaten but Kell is adamant that it's not him who will | :18:33. | :18:36.
He's going to bring it and someone has always got to go, | :18:37. | :18:44.
It's going to be 33 and the new IBF champion of the world, | :18:45. | :18:49.
Even Kell's grandmother will be watching. | :18:50. | :18:54.
But one person who can't watch is his mum. | :18:55. | :18:57.
I don't feel that I could bear to watch him, | :18:58. | :19:00.
She gets in a really bad way when I'm fighting. | :19:01. | :19:06.
Especially this fight, the magnitude of this fight, I can't | :19:07. | :19:08.
All that's left now is an official weigh`in and pre`fight | :19:09. | :19:13.
Here we are at MG's, this is where I've come | :19:14. | :19:19.
It's been a grand old day of huffing and puffing on the North | :19:20. | :19:42.
The volunteers that run the line have realised | :19:43. | :19:45.
a long cherished dream to open a new platform at Whitby station. | :19:46. | :19:48.
It means more frequent trains and, as Cathy Killick reports, | :19:49. | :19:51.
What could be better than a beautiful day in Whitby? | :19:52. | :19:56.
Arriving by steam train, that's what! | :19:57. | :20:07.
It's a historic day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. | :20:08. | :20:10.
The second platform is opening at Whitby so passengers were treated | :20:11. | :20:16.
to not one locomotive but two, pulling their carriages then | :20:17. | :20:18.
``posing. Train spotters, this is your money shot. | :20:19. | :20:30.
We've been planning it for three years, | :20:31. | :20:35.
working on it now for the best part of a year, as in building it. | :20:36. | :20:38.
Very exciting, the first time we've had these two | :20:39. | :20:42.
steam engines together in Whitby station, probably for 50 years. | :20:43. | :20:44.
To have brought this back when, at one time, | :20:45. | :20:46.
people might have thought this station had closed, is fantastic. | :20:47. | :20:50.
The project marks a high point in the co`operation | :20:51. | :20:52.
between the volunteer`run Heritage Line and Network Rail, | :20:53. | :20:54.
and means two extra trains a day can run between Pickering and Whitby. | :20:55. | :20:59.
Network Rail have provided the mechanical expertise. | :21:00. | :21:01.
As you can see, it's historic signalling is a brilliant idea. | :21:02. | :21:03.
It will bring more business and to the railway industry and tourism. | :21:04. | :21:19.
I just love the sound and smell of the smoke. | :21:20. | :21:22.
I know it probably sounds horrible, but I just love it. | :21:23. | :21:29.
I just really enjoy going on steam trains. | :21:30. | :21:31.
It's everything that I wanted in a steam train. | :21:32. | :21:33.
As a young boy, I really wanted to be steam engine | :21:34. | :21:36.
Looking at the new timetable, it just makes it so much easier to | :21:37. | :21:42.
explore both Whitby and the whole of the North York Moors, | :21:43. | :21:45.
Now there will be thousands of beetles at Harewood House this | :21:46. | :22:11.
weekend, but not necessarily of the insect variety! | :22:12. | :22:14.
No, we're talking cars and lots of enthusiasts. | :22:15. | :22:16.
Joe Inwood can hopefully tell us more. | :22:17. | :22:29.
Enthusiastic, yes. But I don't know that much about cars. There are | :22:30. | :22:38.
literally thousands of people here who are not all enthusiastic about | :22:39. | :22:42.
them, but spending a lot of time polishing them. Let's meet some of | :22:43. | :22:49.
the characters who are here this weekend. | :22:50. | :23:12.
I've been into VWs about 15 years. My camper van is where I fit with my | :23:13. | :23:33.
sister! `` fight. The atmosphere is great. Everybody has a good time and | :23:34. | :23:41.
enjoys it. There are people of all ages, it's a good laugh. | :23:42. | :24:00.
As you can see, some real characters here this weekend. Some interesting | :24:01. | :24:07.
stories behind the cars. A man who can tell us one is this organiser | :24:08. | :24:17.
here. This is a special VWs year. An old lady whose husband had died had | :24:18. | :24:23.
this car in the garage. She gave us it as long as it went to a good | :24:24. | :24:27.
