Good evening and welcome to a special Look North.

:00:00.:00:00.

On the programme tonight, remembering Ann Maguire,

:00:07.:00:07.

an inspirational teacher st`bbed to death in her classroom.

:00:08.:00:20.

Students, friends, colleagues and family celebrate

:00:21.:00:21.

Ann's life in a moving memorial service at Leeds Town Hall.

:00:22.:00:28.

We are here today to say we miss you. We are here to say we love you.

:00:29.:00:35.

But we really, really would like to say thank you. Good night, God

:00:36.:00:38.

bless. APPLAUSE And crowds too outside the

:00:39.:00:43.

Town Hall. Hundreds of people, many who didn't

:00:44.:00:44.

know her, watch on the big screens Just very upset about it. She seemed

:00:45.:00:57.

a very beautiful person and our heart goes out to the familx. Very

:00:58.:00:59.

much. Sorry. We'll hear more tributes

:01:00.:01:02.

and also talk about Ann's ldgacy, a fund which has been set up

:01:03.:01:05.

by her family to help young people And before the showers developed,

:01:06.:01:17.

most of us all some sunshind, as you can see from this picture in York

:01:18.:01:21.

this morning. I will be back later in the programme with the ddtails

:01:22.:01:22.

for the week ahead. Miss Maguire, like,

:01:23.:01:36.

sort of showed me the way, gave me a lot of time when,

:01:37.:01:38.

to be fair, she didn't have to. She wouldn't let you take no

:01:39.:01:41.

for an answer. If she believed in you,

:01:42.:01:44.

you believed in yourself, rdally. She always just taught you to get

:01:45.:01:46.

up and carry on, just keep going. Definitely, definitely made me

:01:47.:01:50.

the kind of person I am tod`y. Many said she was

:01:51.:01:57.

more than just a teacher. And whether it was Mrs Maguhre's

:01:58.:01:59.

choir, her Spanish lessons or her ski trips, she was simply

:02:00.:02:02.

inspirational to her students. The death of Ann Maguire

:02:03.:02:08.

in the classroom at Corpus Christi Catholic College

:02:09.:02:10.

in Leeds in April was devastating. A boy who was 15

:02:11.:02:12.

at the time is due to go on trial Few events in all

:02:13.:02:15.

my many years here at Look North But today it was all about

:02:16.:02:20.

celebrating her life and he`ring the Her family were among

:02:21.:02:24.

the hundreds of people at a memorial For those inside Leeds Town Hall, it

:02:25.:02:29.

was an emotional, personal journey. Outside, for hundreds of others

:02:30.:02:40.

many of whom probably didn't even know

:02:41.:02:42.

her, it was simply a chance to pay Today, though,

:02:43.:02:45.

was all about celebration. It was a service that captured

:02:46.:02:48.

the spirit of Ann. One of the things that has struck me

:02:49.:02:58.

in the last few months is how many people who work for the council who

:02:59.:03:03.

represent the council, knew Ann And not only did she teach them

:03:04.:03:11.

she actually inspired them to have One of the features

:03:12.:03:15.

of this service was the heart and Uplifting?

:03:16.:03:25.

Just a lot. This guitar`wielding,

:03:26.:03:34.

choir`conducting, Spanish`speaking, prayer`encouraging,

:03:35.:03:55.

vivacious presence in our lhves and in school is who we remdmber

:03:56.:04:02.

today with the most profound Ann had her own views

:04:03.:04:04.

about children. Every child is different and you

:04:05.:04:25.

have to adapt your approach to each one, tuning in with their ndeds

:04:26.:04:38.

and encouraging them to asphre. Whether she was chasing homdwork,

:04:39.:04:48.

singing in Spanish or soothhng teenage anxieties,

:04:49.:04:52.

Ann rightly lived up to her accolade Ann would have loved this,

:04:53.:04:56.

Potter's Hand sung by the choir Then this moving tribute from one

:04:57.:05:10.

of her colleagues. Ann never believed she was

:05:11.:05:16.

in any way special or different But,

:05:17.:05:19.

to colleagues and to generations of Corpus Christi pupils, she will

:05:20.:05:27.

remain very special indeed. She acted justly, she loved tenderly

:05:28.:05:34.

and she worked humbly with her God. Right at the very end, one of Ann's

:05:35.:05:39.

nephews, who she raised as her own, We are here today to say we miss

:05:40.:05:48.

you, we are here to say we love you, but we really,

:05:49.:05:56.

really would like to say th`nk you. Two young people

:05:57.:06:00.

in the service just said to me before I came out, towards

:06:01.:06:14.

the end of it, that they felt she was with them today, she always was,

:06:15.:06:17.

she always supported them. I think they are absolutely right,

:06:18.:06:20.

it was that kind of day. Well for those who couldn't get

:06:21.:06:25.

inside the town hall, there was thd chance

:06:26.:06:39.

to watch the whole service outside. Spencer Stokes joined the htndreds

:06:40.:06:42.

of people ` many of whom didn't know her ` but wanted to pay

:06:43.:06:45.

their last respects to Ann Laguire. They queued around the town Hall

:06:46.:06:57.

this morning waiting for thd doors to open, pupils, colleagues,

:06:58.:07:01.

friends, here to remember a woman known to four generations. @ former

:07:02.:07:07.

teacher taught at Corpus Christi. He left 18 years ago but felt he had to

:07:08.:07:11.

be here today at the servicd. I miss her greatly. I just feel it is

:07:12.:07:15.

hugely unjust that somebody who made such a massive commitment to the

:07:16.:07:19.

teaching profession and to live at large was denied that opportunity to

:07:20.:07:23.

have a very well earned rethrement with her family. Students who had

:07:24.:07:31.

been taught by Ann stood in groups or with parents. Kirsty Kennedy and

:07:32.:07:37.

her friends took their GCSEs just weeks after Ann died. It is never

:07:38.:07:42.

going to go away, really, is it But we are here to celebrate her life

:07:43.:07:47.

today. For some a celebration, for others a commemoration. 1200 inside

:07:48.:07:50.

the town Hall and hundreds lore watching the service relayed to

:07:51.:07:55.

those outside. Many of thosd in the town Hall today new Ann Magtire

:07:56.:07:58.

they had worked with her all been taught by her. And others who had

:07:59.:08:03.

never met her have come to the town Hall today to stand outside and see

:08:04.:08:07.

the memorial service. She sdems like such a good person, nobody deserves

:08:08.:08:15.

that. And you didn't know hdr? No, but you don't have to know somebody.

:08:16.:08:20.

I can't put it into words. She seemed a very beautiful person. Our

:08:21.:08:25.

heart goes out to the familx, very much. Sorry. As the service ended,

:08:26.:08:34.

Ann's daughter Kerry thanked those who had attended. But the

:08:35.:08:36.

overwhelming feeling here today was a city coming together to thank Ann

:08:37.:08:42.

Maguire. Wonderful, absolutdly wonderful tribute. Very emotional,

:08:43.:08:48.

but the service was just so fitting and a wonderful tribute to `

:08:49.:08:53.

wonderful woman. And the singing of the children was astonishing.

:08:54.:08:56.

For Ann's family, the incredible support for them has been a great

:08:57.:08:59.

comfort and they've thanked everyone involved in today's service.

:09:00.:09:01.

Mrs Maguire had two daughters of her own.

:09:02.:09:03.

She also brought up her two nephews after the death of their mother

:09:04.:09:06.

They all spoke to Danny Sav`ge before the service.

:09:07.:09:09.

Danny, not only the family still coming to terms with her de`th but

:09:10.:09:19.

they are also having to deal with the media attention around ht. This

:09:20.:09:24.

was a very difficult decision for them to speak out. It was. We heard

:09:25.:09:29.

in the service today that she was described as the mother of the

:09:30.:09:32.

school but she was the mothdr at home as well. Shoe was also an aunt,

:09:33.:09:38.

a grandma, so much to so many of her relatives. `` she was. Her family

:09:39.:09:42.

had not spoken before in thd last few months but they decided to do so

:09:43.:09:45.

now because of the manorial service. It was not easy for them, they

:09:46.:09:49.

thought long and hard about what they wanted to say and how they

:09:50.:09:53.

wanted to do it. On Friday dvening I went round to the house, thdy wanted

:09:54.:09:57.

to sit in the dining room to talk to me, I spoke to her daughters, and

:09:58.:10:02.

also her nephews, who were brought up by an and Don when their mother

:10:03.:10:05.

died about the gap that she had left in their lives. `` brought tp by Ann

:10:06.:10:07.

and one. She did the everyday things

:10:08.:10:14.

in a very special way. So it made her extraordinarx

:10:15.:10:18.

to people who got to know hdr. A beautiful, dedicated,

:10:19.:10:23.

hard`working individual. She had a very strong faith and that

:10:24.:10:31.

influenced her life profoundly and Many people would have seen you

:10:32.:10:35.

outside the school in the d`ys after what happened to Ann,

:10:36.:10:43.

reading the messages that h`d been left on the railings, on thd

:10:44.:10:46.

flowers, written on pupils' ties. How much of

:10:47.:10:49.

a support were all those messages? I do remember reading the mdssages

:10:50.:10:53.

and thinking how accurate they were. For young people to actuallx assess

:10:54.:11:00.

her work and her worth in the way they did, I did find

:11:01.:11:03.

that extraordinary on the d`y, yes. As one message came through it was

:11:04.:11:12.

always about Ann's dedication to her students

:11:13.:11:15.

and her willingness to go that extra Be it 20 years ago or in thd last

:11:16.:11:17.

week that she was at the school We have so many of our own little

:11:18.:11:28.

stories and memories of Mumly and we are so grateful that people shared

:11:29.:11:31.

theirs because that has allowed us to see her through their eyds and

:11:32.:11:34.

also add those memories to our own banks, so we have even

:11:35.:11:37.

more to remember her for. I still read them on occasion

:11:38.:11:40.

and receive a great deal So they are important and they

:11:41.:11:42.

are treasured by us now, yes. She was a special teacher to

:11:43.:11:54.

so many pupils over the years and she was obviously speci`l in

:11:55.:11:57.

her home life as well, wasn't she? Mum was always there for us,

:11:58.:12:01.

she stood by us, she was our rock, she provided support and kindness

:12:02.:12:04.

and love in whatever we did. Ann was truly the foundation

:12:05.:12:11.

of the house. The life lessons that she h`s taught

:12:12.:12:20.

us, the education and morals that she has givdn us

:12:21.:12:22.

all, that's all things that we will continue to draw from in dax`to`day

:12:23.:12:26.

life and going forward. Ann was a very loving, dedicated

:12:27.:12:36.

wife and a natural mother. It was her natural mothering

:12:37.:12:45.

qualities that I think made Ann Bher family speaking very

:12:46.:13:11.

passionately there about Ann Maguire. `` her family. Fivd months

:13:12.:13:19.

on, do you think they are moving on? Five months seems like a long time

:13:20.:13:22.

to you and me but in that home it isn't, every day is very difficult

:13:23.:13:26.

and I think they are finding it very hard to move on. Because evdry day

:13:27.:13:29.

they wake up and remember and realise the reality of what has

:13:30.:13:32.

happened. I was talking to Dmma and she said it boils down to this,

:13:33.:13:36.

money doesn't come home any more. Andrew, the nephew, who livds in New

:13:37.:13:41.

Zealand, says that Ann was `lways on the doorstep to meet him whdn he

:13:42.:13:46.

came home, journey. `` Mummx doesn't come home any more. There is a

:13:47.:13:50.

longer version of that interview and you can see an extended version on

:13:51.:13:55.

BBC1 here in Yorkshire at 7:30pm this evening.

:13:56.:14:02.

Now the memorial service is over, her family are keen to keep

:14:03.:14:05.

Ann's passion alive for helping young people realise their talents.

:14:06.:14:08.

Today we heard about the Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund

:14:09.:14:11.

which has already raised more than ?25,000 and that's without `ny major

:14:12.:14:17.

Joining us now to tell us more about it

:14:18.:14:23.

?25,000 already has been rahsed and it was only officially launched

:14:24.:14:32.

today, this fund. A real testament of how many lives Ann Maguire really

:14:33.:14:38.

did touch. It is incredible. And what I think is happening is people

:14:39.:14:47.

now tap into this wonderful... Thing that Ann has created, which is that

:14:48.:14:51.

to teach and to share in a selfless way has made everybody refldct on

:14:52.:14:54.

what that means to themselvds. And I think what the girls want to do

:14:55.:14:58.

particularly Kerry and Emma, is to provide a legacy and a kind of

:14:59.:15:05.

battle and to pass on so th`t the funds and the work that thex enjoyed

:15:06.:15:09.

from their parents, to find funds to help them do what they want to do,

:15:10.:15:13.

that that could be made avahlable to a wider audience. `` kind of baton

:15:14.:15:18.

to pass on. 12 and 13`year`old children in education, focusing on

:15:19.:15:23.

performing arts and languagds. That is the main purpose of the charity.

:15:24.:15:29.

Kerry said that one of Ann's life principles as a teacher was that you

:15:30.:15:33.

can never put a limit on a child's potential. This legacy will be so

:15:34.:15:38.

important in that respect. H think so and the more I listen to the

:15:39.:15:41.

girls speaking about this charity, the more I am beginning to

:15:42.:15:45.

understand that it is not jtst about promoting something to people that

:15:46.:15:50.

already are in performing arts, languages, but thinking mord about

:15:51.:15:53.

how to make that available to people who have not even thought about it.

:15:54.:15:58.

So to awaken that motivation in the parents and the children and then

:15:59.:16:00.

make that bursary or fund available and then do what... One viddo clip

:16:01.:16:07.

that I saw today had a woman who said, I didn't know I even had that

:16:08.:16:13.

potential. And I think that is the idea of this charity, to release

:16:14.:16:16.

that potential. Very quicklx, we heard that the family are still

:16:17.:16:19.

finding it very hard to comd to terms with Ann's

:16:20.:18:07.

of a number of women on their way to a hen party

:18:08.:18:10.

in Liverpool for the bride`to`be, 24`year`old Stephanie Firth.

:18:11.:18:13.

They had just set out from their village, South Elmsall,

:18:14.:18:16.

She and the minibus driver were badly injured.

:18:17.:18:22.

A date of October 21st has been set aside for the sentencing of

:18:23.:18:25.

James Johnson after the tri`l of the lorry driver, Kevin Olldrhead.

:18:26.:18:36.

A man from Leeds who was wanted in connection with an allegdd plot

:18:37.:18:42.

to smuggle a hundred million pounds' worth of cocaine into the country

:18:43.:18:45.

The 29`year`old is the third person to be arrested in West Yorkshire

:18:46.:18:50.

following the seizure of a xacht off the coast of Ireland last week.

:18:51.:18:53.

It was carrying around a tonne of cocaine.

:18:54.:18:55.

On Saturday a man from Guisdley faced magistrates in Leeds charged

:18:56.:18:58.

Two other men from West Yorkshire and a man from Grimsby also

:18:59.:19:05.

Volunteer groups are taking over the running of around half of

:19:06.:19:11.

The idea led to protests after it was announced 18 months ago.

:19:12.:19:18.

It's because the City Counchl had to reduce its libraries budget

:19:19.:19:20.

by more than one and a half million pounds after government cuts.

:19:21.:19:25.

The Council will continue to run the Central Lending Library and 11

:19:26.:19:27.

Picturehouse Cinemas are taking over the running of the three screens at

:19:28.:19:34.

The new partnership will st`rt at the end of October

:19:35.:19:41.

and the Media Museum's director says it will ensure that cinema remains

:19:42.:19:44.

It's also hoped that the resulting investment in technology

:19:45.:19:51.

and facilities will deliver a wider programme of films to visitors.

:19:52.:19:55.

Let's turn to the weekend's football and the Huddersfield Town m`nager,

:19:56.:19:58.

Chris Powell, said it was a fantastic feeling to register his

:19:59.:20:00.

Leeds United's new head coach saw his side lose out to Brentford.

:20:01.:20:06.

Home wins for Huddersfield Town have become something of a rarity.

:20:07.:20:13.

You have to go back to the 0st of March for the last one.

:20:14.:20:17.

But Nahki Wells' stunning opener seemed to give them confidence.

:20:18.:20:19.

Though Millwall equalised, Town kept pressing, and when Harry Bunn was

:20:20.:20:22.

brought down in the box, Wells stepped up and it finished 2`1.

:20:23.:20:25.

I thought it was a very good display today from

:20:26.:20:27.

My first win as manager, my fourth match, so, yeah,

:20:28.:20:32.

Milanic took charge of Leeds United for the first time

:20:33.:20:42.

With owner Massimo Cellino watching the game with the fans,

:20:43.:20:45.

Milanic admitted he needed time to get to know his players

:20:46.:20:49.

A win at home on Wednesday night would certainly help him out.

:20:50.:20:53.

Into League 1 and the Sheffheld United fans got to congratulate one

:20:54.:20:56.

of their own when Kell Brook paraded his world title belt at half`time.

:20:57.:21:00.

Had this match been a boxing contest it might have been stopped.

:21:01.:21:03.

The Blades were dominant without landing that critical blow.

:21:04.:21:05.

Then in the 83rd minute, Gillingham scored.

:21:06.:21:09.

Michael Higdon levelled it, and then in the 97th minute, Jamie

:21:10.:21:15.

We've scored some very important late goals in the last couple

:21:16.:21:21.

And I think it is going to be a feature,

:21:22.:21:25.

if we are going to succeed then we will have to sometimes do that.

:21:26.:21:28.

It would be nice to play a bit better in the first h`lf so

:21:29.:21:31.

These are tough times for B`rnsley, who have won just twice

:21:32.:21:36.

Three second`half goals for Swindon saw them lose again.

:21:37.:21:39.

Early days but with them sitting in the relegation places,

:21:40.:21:42.

the league table doesn't make for comfortable viewing.

:21:43.:21:44.

You can see the action from your team's match on the Football League

:21:45.:21:47.

World famous violinist Nigel Kennedy has been in Scarborough

:21:48.:21:56.

at the weekend headlining the town's 12th annual jazz festival.

:21:57.:21:58.

The star of British classic`l music caused controversy when he crossed

:21:59.:22:02.

over into jazz and pop music but his visit to Scarborough saw thhs year's

:22:03.:22:06.

It's well known he doesn't do interviews often but

:26:05.:26:07.

evening, remembering teacher Ann Maguire. Many said she was `n

:26:08.:26:12.

inspiration, more than just a teacher. We will leave you with

:26:13.:26:15.

tributes now from friends, colleagues and pupils. Good night.

:26:16.:26:22.

Always with a guitar, she rdally liked her guitar with the r`inbow

:26:23.:26:28.

strap. She sort of showed md the way, she gave me a lot of thme when

:26:29.:26:30.

to be fair, she didn't have too If she believed in you, you believed

:26:31.:26:45.

in yourself, really. The average person moves home

:26:46.:28:02.

eight times during their life. So that's eight times

:28:03.:28:08.

we have to move the sofa. Eight times

:28:09.:28:11.

we have to redecorate. Eight times

:28:12.:28:15.

we have to locate the stopcock But there's one thing

:28:16.:28:19.

that's easy to do when you move - you can switch your TV licence

:28:20.:28:22.

online.
