Jo Cox was 41, a mum with two small children. | :00:21. | :00:22.
She's been described as one of the nicest people in Parliament. | :00:23. | :00:37.
I am shocked that she was killed serving her community. Tonight, the | :00:38. | :00:47.
circumstances of how she died are being investigated by the police. At | :00:48. | :00:53.
52-year-old man has been arrested. It was reported that he shouted | :00:54. | :00:56.
Britain first when police apprehended him. | :00:57. | :01:08.
June evening to you from Birstall, as Tynan shocked this evening. The | :01:09. | :01:16.
local MP was shot and attack by a knife outside her advice surgery | :01:17. | :01:23.
this lunchtime. Tonight, 52 old man is in custody and an investigation | :01:24. | :01:27.
is underway as to the circumstances and reasons for the attack. There | :01:28. | :01:32.
are reports that the killer shouted Britain first when he was arrested. | :01:33. | :01:38.
Let me tell you a little bit about Jo Cox, she is married mum of two. | :01:39. | :01:46.
She was Labour MP for Batley and Spen since the elections last year. | :01:47. | :01:53.
Recently, the press called a news conference and told us this. Just | :01:54. | :02:01.
before one o'clock today, Jo Cox was attacked in Market Street in | :02:02. | :02:05.
Birstall. I am now very sad and have to report that she has died as a | :02:06. | :02:15.
result of her injuries. I would like to express our deepest sympathies to | :02:16. | :02:18.
her family and friends at this time. There was an attack on the | :02:19. | :02:36.
77-year-old man nearby whose injuries are not life-threatening. | :02:37. | :02:44.
Weapons including a firearm having recovered from a man arrested. Jo | :02:45. | :02:49.
Cox was pronounced deceased by a doctor who was working with a | :02:50. | :02:53.
paramedic crew that were attending to her serious injuries. | :02:54. | :02:59.
There is a large and significant crime scene | :03:00. | :03:02.
and there is a large police presence in the area. | :03:03. | :03:06.
underway to establish the motive for this attack. | :03:07. | :03:15.
There are specifically trained officers with Jo's | :03:16. | :03:17.
immediate family who are fully aware of what is taking place and we would | :03:18. | :03:20.
ask the media to respect their privacy at this | :03:21. | :03:22.
Additional officers are working in the local community this | :03:23. | :03:28.
afternoon and evening in order to provide | :03:29. | :03:30.
reassurance and support to our local communities. | :03:31. | :03:36.
Clearly as this enquiry is at a very early stage and we have | :03:37. | :03:40.
an individual under arrest we are not in a position | :03:41. | :03:42.
to discuss any motives at this time. | :03:43. | :03:47.
We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this | :03:48. | :03:49.
I am Mark Burns Williamson the Police and Crimes | :03:50. | :04:03.
Commissioner for Leeds and West Yorkshire. | :04:04. | :04:05.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jo's family at this time. | :04:06. | :04:10.
I have worked closely with Jo sensuous collected and I'm deeply | :04:11. | :04:19.
I have worked closely with Jo since she was elected and I'm deeply | :04:20. | :04:22.
shocked that such a talented young woman has been so senselessly | :04:23. | :04:25.
Whilst working in her constituency and circling her | :04:26. | :04:28.
I want to try and reassure communities that our | :04:29. | :04:43.
information is that this is a localised incident. | :04:44. | :04:45.
I must stress that investigations are ongoing and | :04:46. | :04:49.
We need to let the police do their job in | :04:50. | :04:52.
understanding exactly what has happened that has led to this hugely | :04:53. | :04:55.
tragic incident and channel all of our thoughts into supporting the | :04:56. | :04:59.
families and communities affected at this time. | :05:00. | :05:05.
Tonight the Home Secretary Theresa May had this to say: | :05:06. | :05:19.
This is a dreadful event and my heart goes out to Jo Cox husband. | :05:20. | :05:31.
The pain they must now be in is unimaginable and our thoughts and | :05:32. | :05:35.
prayers are with them at this terrible time. The fool details of | :05:36. | :05:41.
what happened outside her constituency surgery this afternoon | :05:42. | :05:47.
are not yet clear. And hurled the facts have been fully established I | :05:48. | :05:53.
will not comment further. It is entirely appropriate that all | :05:54. | :05:57.
campaigning for the referendum has been suspended. All of us are united | :05:58. | :06:03.
in our deep sadness at the loss of one of our brightest and most | :06:04. | :06:05.
popular Westminster colleagues. That was the Home | :06:06. | :06:10.
Secretary Theresa May. As we heard from the police, | :06:11. | :06:11.
this incident happened just before 1pm at Jo Cox's advice | :06:12. | :06:14.
surgery in the library in Market Street in | :06:15. | :06:16.
the centre of Birstall. Our reporter Cathy Killick | :06:17. | :06:28.
was on the scene shortly afterwards The street is cordoned off as a | :06:29. | :06:41.
murder scene. It was here that two shots were fired just before 1pm | :06:42. | :06:45.
this afternoon. The victim was Jo Cox. Recently elected she was a | :06:46. | :06:52.
mother of two. She took the seat for Labour in the last election. She was | :06:53. | :06:58.
holding a surgery in the library. Eyewitnesses heard screams and saw | :06:59. | :07:03.
her being a tax between two parked cars. Her attacker brought out a gun | :07:04. | :07:10.
and fired twice and then calmly walks away. One man who tried to | :07:11. | :07:14.
tackle him was injured and is now being treated for his wounds. He | :07:15. | :07:23.
fired another shot as well. Between the first and the second there was | :07:24. | :07:34.
about three or four seconds. Be helicopters started coming. We ran | :07:35. | :07:40.
over and she was lying on the floor bleeding. We try to do CPR. We | :07:41. | :07:46.
couldn't do anything to help her. The man had a black hat on and he | :07:47. | :07:51.
was walking away casually. He was not running. Jo Cox was taking to | :07:52. | :07:59.
the hospital by anglers and police escort. At 5pm news that she had | :08:00. | :08:04.
died of her injuries was released by the police. While she was being | :08:05. | :08:07.
treated and armed police operation took place in Birstall. A 52 old man | :08:08. | :08:14.
named as Thomas Mair has been arrested and is being held by | :08:15. | :08:19.
police. The reaction in Birstall has been one of absolute shock. Crowds | :08:20. | :08:24.
have been gathering all afternoon. It is a small place and word has | :08:25. | :08:31.
spread very quickly. People are offering thoughts and prayers for Jo | :08:32. | :08:35.
Cox and her family. A detailed investigation at the scene is | :08:36. | :08:39.
underway. Police are trying to establish what may have led to this | :08:40. | :08:44.
attack on a women doing her job representing and helping the people | :08:45. | :08:53.
who elected her. A lot of people witnessed this murder. Here is one | :08:54. | :08:59.
of them. You have a cafe here. Tel is. We were in the restaurant and | :09:00. | :09:07.
everyone was having their dinner. We were darting about the football | :09:08. | :09:15.
match. It was a normal day. All of a sudden I saw people rushing down the | :09:16. | :09:19.
street screaming and yelling. It is not normal. It is very frightening. | :09:20. | :09:27.
It was as if they were very concerned about something happening. | :09:28. | :09:38.
Did usually shots? We saw a man taking something behind the car that | :09:39. | :09:42.
we couldn't see. I didn't know that it was Jo Cox. Somebody tried to | :09:43. | :09:51.
restrain him. We thought it might be domestic violence. We got out and we | :09:52. | :10:02.
saw the guy pulled the gun out of his bag. He was shaking it around | :10:03. | :10:11.
and then he fired it. I thought he fired it at the crowd. A terrible | :10:12. | :10:21.
thing to witness. You is adamant that he was going to kill her. He | :10:22. | :10:30.
intended to kill her. A woman who gave everything for her | :10:31. | :10:34.
constituency. I know Jo Cox personally. She came to my cafe and | :10:35. | :10:39.
we campaigned together for the Birstall seats. She is a wonderful | :10:40. | :10:50.
lady. She represents the youth for future politicians for this country | :10:51. | :10:53.
and she has got a lovely smile and a very good and outgoing personality. | :10:54. | :11:01.
She is transparent and truthful and outgoing. She loves people and she | :11:02. | :11:05.
serves Birstall very well. Thank you. Here is our crime | :11:06. | :11:12.
correspondence. What do we know about the man who has been arrested? | :11:13. | :11:19.
He lives 52 and lives locally. An eyewitness had him shouting Britain | :11:20. | :11:25.
first. He was brought to the ground by two police officers with armed | :11:26. | :11:30.
officers standing by. This is presumed to be a reference to the | :11:31. | :11:34.
far right organisation, Britain First. Not like you did have | :11:35. | :11:41.
anything to do with the EU referendum campaign? It has been | :11:42. | :11:47.
stopped as a mark of respect. Police would not speculate on any motive at | :11:48. | :11:55.
the conference. Britain First have issued a statement saying that they | :11:56. | :11:58.
had nothing to do with it and would never encourage behaviour of this | :11:59. | :12:04.
sort. People have said it is the right thing to do to suspend the | :12:05. | :12:09.
campaign in the middle of all this. Indeed, it is a mark of respect to | :12:10. | :12:15.
Jo Cox. It will be a temporary suspension. Thank you. The tributes | :12:16. | :12:22.
have been pouring in for Jo Cox to really was an incredibly popular | :12:23. | :12:26.
local MP. I think this sums it up in many ways. | :12:27. | :12:31.
Simple words from the Labour party leadership tonight about Jo Cox. | :12:32. | :12:33.
The leader Jeremy Corbyn said she was a compassionate, | :12:34. | :12:35.
principled, beautiful person, who championed human rights. | :12:36. | :12:40.
Len Tingle now reports on the work of a woman popular on both sides | :12:41. | :12:43.
One hour before news of her death was officially released, Jo Cox | :12:44. | :12:56.
husband published this on social media. No worries, just a | :12:57. | :13:01.
photograph. A personal memory. A reminder that Jo Cox was more than a | :13:02. | :13:07.
Labour MP, she was also a wife and a mum. Juggling those responsibilities | :13:08. | :13:11.
with her ambition to make a difference. She had worked for Oxfam | :13:12. | :13:16.
and campaigned for women's right and refugees. It is just over a year | :13:17. | :13:22.
before she entered the next phase of what was expected to be a | :13:23. | :13:27.
substantial political career. She was elected MP of her hometown. I | :13:28. | :13:35.
love all of you very much. Jeremy Corbyn called a halt to campaigning. | :13:36. | :13:41.
All sides have followed his lead. We have lost a wonderful woman and a | :13:42. | :13:46.
wonderful member of Parliament. Our democracy will go on and so will her | :13:47. | :13:51.
work. As we mourn her memory will work in that memory. Melt everyone's | :13:52. | :14:04.
thoughts are with Jo Cox family at this terrible time. Tributes have | :14:05. | :14:12.
been flooding in from MPs of both sides of the house. It is not the | :14:13. | :14:16.
first time that an MP has been attacked during or after holding a | :14:17. | :14:28.
surgery. What we cannot allow to happen is first savagery of this | :14:29. | :14:33.
kind to stop the democratic process of members of Parliament doing their | :14:34. | :14:40.
job. That is what the public expect. Her husband issued a further | :14:41. | :14:43.
statement urging all to fight against the hated that killed her. | :14:44. | :14:49.
He said hate does not have a creed, race or religion. It is just | :14:50. | :14:59.
poisonous. Remarkable tributes there to Jo Cox. Here are some people who | :15:00. | :15:06.
knew her quite well. Here is a local MP. Tell me about Jo Cox. Today | :15:07. | :15:12.
Parliament has lost a wonderful and inspirational MP and I have lost a | :15:13. | :15:16.
great friend. People here have lost a great MP. She was only a member of | :15:17. | :15:24.
parliament here for just over a year but made a huge difference in that | :15:25. | :15:28.
time. When she spoke people listen to her like she had been there for | :15:29. | :15:32.
years. She spoke with knowledge and passion about the things that | :15:33. | :15:37.
mattered to her. Local issues in this area are about Syria, | :15:38. | :15:40.
International development. Things that she knew so much about actor | :15:41. | :15:46.
her successful career at Oxfam. She wanted to be a representative for | :15:47. | :15:52.
the place that she grew up in and loves. She died doing the job she | :15:53. | :15:56.
loved and representing the people she loved. A huge waste and a huge | :15:57. | :16:02.
tragedy. You were an MP here are a few years ago. You're visibly upset | :16:03. | :16:07.
about this. Lille I was really shocked. I was striving into the | :16:08. | :16:11.
town at about 1:30pm and I heard it on the radio. I felt so shocked and | :16:12. | :16:17.
six. I had to stop the car and switched off and try to digester I | :16:18. | :16:21.
had just heard. I did not believe it. I can believe such a vibrant | :16:22. | :16:28.
person had disappeared. She would have been great in Parliament. As | :16:29. | :16:35.
our homemaker maiden speech and I listened carefully. She looked | :16:36. | :16:38.
beautiful. I was impressed and I wrote to her and said, I heard your | :16:39. | :16:42.
speech and your contact was brilliant. What you wrote you said | :16:43. | :16:49.
you would do was very good and I wish you well. I think she is a | :16:50. | :16:54.
great loss to Parliament and in particular to her family. Can I have | :16:55. | :17:00.
the local vicar here, you knew her very well, didn't you? We did talk | :17:01. | :17:04.
and I found her such a wonderful person. She was determined to help | :17:05. | :17:10.
individuals and groups within the community. For that we supported | :17:11. | :17:17.
her. The thing about it was that when you looked at her work before | :17:18. | :17:22.
she was an MP, she was committed to human rights and Jankovic things | :17:23. | :17:26.
better for people. She has been all over the world and has been to | :17:27. | :17:30.
Afghanistan. It is ironic that she died here at home in a place that | :17:31. | :17:35.
should have been safe. I knew her husband very well for a number of | :17:36. | :17:41.
years. The children as well. It is such a tragedy to dig out of this | :17:42. | :17:46.
world is such an amazing woman and politician. She was also a mother | :17:47. | :17:50.
who had so much to look forward to and so much still to give. She will | :17:51. | :17:56.
leave a legacy in just the 42 years that she left. Such a lasting | :17:57. | :17:59.
legacy. If you think what she achieved in that short space of time | :18:00. | :18:03.
she could have gone on to achieve so much more. In your commitment to | :18:04. | :18:09.
public service do you think about it when this kind of thing happens as | :18:10. | :18:15.
well? Of course. Today our thoughts and prayers are with her family and | :18:16. | :18:19.
her husband, her parents and children. This is not the first time | :18:20. | :18:23.
this has happened. There was another colleague of mine who was stabbed in | :18:24. | :18:30.
his constituency surgery. We do need to think about how we do our jobs, | :18:31. | :18:37.
but you cannot do the job of an MP unless you are in the heart of your | :18:38. | :18:41.
community because you can't represent people if you put a buyer | :18:42. | :18:44.
between yourself and the people you represent. The reason why Jo Cox was | :18:45. | :18:51.
such an amazing MP is because she was rooted in the team unity that | :18:52. | :18:56.
she loves. If you take the MP at the community then they can't do the | :18:57. | :19:02.
job. But we need to think about safety when we're going about our | :19:03. | :19:05.
business. Our thoughts are with her family today. Can Askew both about | :19:06. | :19:12.
the community here. This is a great time and I have been here many | :19:13. | :19:15.
times. It is an alien thing that has happened here. Well everyone rally | :19:16. | :19:23.
round? The area that she represented was very communal and comes together | :19:24. | :19:31.
well. I think she was gaining the respect already by what she was | :19:32. | :19:36.
setting out to do. Unfortunately that has really been cut short. I | :19:37. | :19:45.
can remember three or four times I had to have police presence at my | :19:46. | :19:49.
surgeries because they knew who was coming. You can't think about that. | :19:50. | :19:54.
You can't not go, you just get on with it. The community here is a | :19:55. | :20:03.
strong community and I believe it will continue to be so. We're having | :20:04. | :20:07.
a vigil at 8pm tonight in the church and expect a number of people to | :20:08. | :20:12.
turn up. We're going to give people the opportunity to ASCII big | :20:13. | :20:16.
questions, but also to have some quiet time in their own prayers and | :20:17. | :20:20.
praying for the family and the whole community. We can get out of this | :20:21. | :20:28.
and through this. Can we reflect on the first speech that she made. That | :20:29. | :20:34.
is the nerve wracking speech that every new MP has to go through. What | :20:35. | :20:39.
impression did she create with you? I knew her before she was an MP. I | :20:40. | :20:45.
encouraged her to stand for Parliament, because I saw in her a | :20:46. | :20:54.
real passion and vibrancy. She was so proud to represent the town where | :20:55. | :20:58.
she grew up in and went to school in. Her parents are so here. It | :20:59. | :21:05.
instilled in her a great pride and a huge responsibility to do right by | :21:06. | :21:11.
the people she grew up with. She called debates in Parliament. On | :21:12. | :21:19.
Syria, international development issues and people listened. In my | :21:20. | :21:29.
first year as an MP I don't know if that even happened. People release | :21:30. | :21:33.
that up and listens because she knew what she was talking about. She | :21:34. | :21:37.
spoke with so much energy. We must not let that spirit and that energy | :21:38. | :21:43.
die with Jo Cox. We must continue her work. Thank you Barry much. | :21:44. | :22:04.
We are reacting to the death of the Labour MP Jo Cox. Jo Cox has been | :22:05. | :22:16.
killed in the West Yorkshire constituency. All EU campaigning has | :22:17. | :22:20.
been suspended as a mark of respect. She was attacked in the village of | :22:21. | :22:24.
her skull early this afternoon. Eyewitnesses say she was shot and | :22:25. | :22:31.
stabbed and later died of at Leeds General Infirmary. A 52-year-old man | :22:32. | :22:36.
has been arrested. No motive has been established yet. This was the | :22:37. | :22:41.
tribute from Jeremy Corbyn. The whole of the Labour family are | :22:42. | :22:47.
devastated tonight. Jo Cox has been killed doing her duty, doing her | :22:48. | :22:52.
work as a constituency MP. She is somebody who dedicated her life to | :22:53. | :22:57.
human rights and justice. She worked for anti-slavery campaigns, she | :22:58. | :23:02.
worked for Oxfam and she became an MP for the area where she was born | :23:03. | :23:06.
and grew up and love. In Parliament she was respected across the whole | :23:07. | :23:11.
house is somebody with a deep commitment and passion for human | :23:12. | :23:15.
rights and justice. Sadly, today she died. She was killed on the streets | :23:16. | :23:22.
of her constituency doing her duty as a local member of Parliament | :23:23. | :23:28.
helping people. She leaves behind a husband, a wonderful man who, | :23:29. | :23:33.
likewise, spends his life campaigning for human rights and | :23:34. | :23:37.
justice. She leaves behind two young children, two young children who | :23:38. | :23:41.
will never grow up to see the mum again. They can be proud of what she | :23:42. | :23:48.
was, they can be proud of what she did and they can be very proud of | :23:49. | :23:54.
everything that she stood for. We come together at a time like this, | :23:55. | :23:59.
we come together to support the family and to mourn and reflect that | :24:00. | :24:04.
violence is not an answer, it is not an answer to anything. We need to | :24:05. | :24:09.
come together and express our deepest condolences to Jo and her | :24:10. | :24:15.
family. We have lost a wonderful woman, a wonderful member of | :24:16. | :24:19.
Parliament, but our democracy will go on. Her work will go on as we | :24:20. | :24:25.
mourn her memory we will work in her memory to achieve that better world | :24:26. | :24:27.
she spent her life trying to achieve. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour | :24:28. | :24:33.
Party leader. This is how David Cameron react to the news. This is | :24:34. | :24:39.
absolutely tragic and dreadful news and my thoughts are with Jo's, | :24:40. | :24:44.
Brendan, their two children and her wider family. We have lost a great | :24:45. | :24:51.
start. She was an MP, a great campaigning MP, with huge | :24:52. | :24:56.
compassion, Descartes and people are going to be very, very sad that what | :24:57. | :24:59.
has happened. Dreadful, dreadful news. It is right that we are | :25:00. | :25:05.
suspending campaigning at liberty in this referendum and everyone's | :25:06. | :25:09.
thoughts will reap with her family had her constituent of this terrible | :25:10. | :25:13.
time. There has been an outpouring of grief and tributes for the kind | :25:14. | :25:17.
of person she was. What did you know of her? I know she was a very strong | :25:18. | :25:23.
campaigning MP. She had a great track record of caring for refugees | :25:24. | :25:27.
and took a big interest in how they could look after Syrian refugees and | :25:28. | :25:31.
the right thing to do in our world. She had a key chart, compassionate, | :25:32. | :25:36.
caring MP. She was a bright start, no doubt about it. She was A* right | :25:37. | :25:41.
across the house and we have lost the start, but above all I am | :25:42. | :25:45.
thinking of her husband, Brendan, her children, her family and her | :25:46. | :25:49.
constituents who will be feeling this huge sense of loss tonight and | :25:50. | :25:52.
I think it is right we stop the campaigning activity as we think of | :25:53. | :25:58.
them and what they have lost. Theresa May made this statement a | :25:59. | :26:02.
short time ago. The full details of what happened outside Jo's | :26:03. | :26:08.
constituency surgery in Birstall this afternoon are not yet clear and | :26:09. | :26:12.
until the fact sat been fully established I will not comment | :26:13. | :26:17.
further. It is entirely appropriate that all campaigning for the | :26:18. | :26:23.
referendum has been suspended. All of us are united in our deep sadness | :26:24. | :26:28.
at the loss of one of our brightest and most popular Westminster | :26:29. | :26:39.
colleagues. Thank you. Theresa May. The West Yorkshire Police have made | :26:40. | :26:42.
a statement about the death of Jo Cox. Jo was attacked by a man who | :26:43. | :26:53.
inflicted fatal injuries. Subsequently, there was a further | :26:54. | :26:58.
attack on a 77-year-old man nearby who has sustained injuries that are | :26:59. | :27:02.
not life-threatening. Shortly afterwards, a man was arrested | :27:03. | :27:07.
nearby by local uniformed police officers. Weapons including a | :27:08. | :27:14.
firearm have also been recovered. At 1:48pm Jo Cox was pronounced | :27:15. | :27:19.
deceased by a doctor working with a paramedic crew who were attending to | :27:20. | :27:23.
her serious injuries. This is a very significant investigation with large | :27:24. | :27:26.
numbers of witnesses that have been spoken to by police at this time. | :27:27. | :27:30.
There is a large and significant crime scene and there was a large | :27:31. | :27:37.
police presence in the area. A full investigation is underway to | :27:38. | :27:39.
establish the motive for this attack. There are specifically | :27:40. | :27:47.
trained officers with Jo's immediate family who are fully aware of what | :27:48. | :27:53.
has taken place and we would ask the media to respect their privacy at | :27:54. | :27:56.
this very difficult time. Additional officers are working in the local | :27:57. | :27:59.
community this afternoon and evening in order to provide reassurance and | :28:00. | :28:04.
support our communities. Clearly, as this enquiry is at an early stage | :28:05. | :28:10.
and we have an individual under arrest, we are not in a position to | :28:11. | :28:17.
discuss motive at this time. We are not looking for anyone else in | :28:18. | :28:20.
connection with this incident at present. We will be getting more | :28:21. | :28:30.
reaction to the death of Jo Cox from her constituency where she was | :28:31. | :28:36.
attacked this afternoon. Let's just pause for a moment and look at the | :28:37. | :28:37.
weather forecast. Drier weather for the weekend could | :28:38. | :28:46.
not come soon enough, particularly as we saw another day like this in | :28:47. | :28:51.
Worcestershire, heavy showers for many. The day started off with a few | :28:52. | :28:55.
showers but they generated across England and Wales, some of them | :28:56. | :28:59.
really quite heavy. More persistent rain into Northern Ireland and | :29:00. | :29:03.
Scotland at times and it felt quite cool here. Some of those showers | :29:04. | :29:05.
will ease through the night but some keep going and it is going to be a | :29:06. | :29:10.
pretty murky night with a lot of low cloud again and some patchy fog | :29:11. | :29:15.
first thing. Temperature sticking at between nine and 14 degrees. There | :29:16. | :29:20.
will be outbreaks of brain from the word go. Elsewhere, we will see some | :29:21. | :29:24.
showers which will become more widespread, more sharp and thundery | :29:25. | :29:28.
potentially into the south-east corner as we go through the second | :29:29. | :29:32.
half of the day. Some of them heavy again potentially leading to | :29:33. | :29:38.
localised flooding. 17 to 19 degrees the high here, cooler up north with | :29:39. | :29:40.
highs of just | :29:41. | :29:41. |
