Whittington Hospital in London and another man are charged. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson `nd | :00:00. | :00:07.
Annabel Tiffin. Our top story: Inside a break`out. Extraordinary | :00:08. | :00:10.
pictures from a prison van `s two men escape in an audacious raid | :00:11. | :00:15.
Today, the gang who pulled off the ambush are told they face j`il. | :00:16. | :00:20.
Also tonight: Honoured and humbled ` Liverpool's new Bishop says the | :00:21. | :00:24.
church must be relevant to the victims of modern life. | :00:25. | :00:27.
See the ups a little time for the peopld, and | :00:28. | :00:37.
they are hungry, they can't give their children things that their | :00:38. | :00:41.
children deserve. Sealy ups and not the Down's ` We'll | :00:42. | :00:46.
meet Abigail and Isobel, thd twins who're one in two million. | :00:47. | :00:49.
And saying it in lights: thd lasers celebrating a wartime code`breaker. | :00:50. | :01:02.
It was an audacious, carefully planned and brutal few minutes that | :01:03. | :01:06.
brought Manchester's early lorning rush hour to a halt. A gang ambushed | :01:07. | :01:14.
a prison van on the way to court, freeing two violent criminals.A huge | :01:15. | :01:16.
manhunt followed and Ryan M`cDonald and Stevie McMullen were evdntually | :01:17. | :01:21.
caught. Today the ten peopld who organised the break`out or helped | :01:22. | :01:25.
the prisoners stay on the rtn ` including a 64`year`old grandmother | :01:26. | :01:29.
` were convicted. Judy Hobson's been looking at dramatic CCTV footage of | :01:30. | :01:35.
the incident. The ambush happened during the | :01:36. | :01:38.
morning rush hour on Regent Road, one of Salford's busiest colmuter | :01:39. | :01:41.
routes. The driver's window was smashed and the driver was | :01:42. | :01:46.
threatened with a shotgun. This CCTV footage shows the moment ond man | :01:47. | :01:49.
armed with a sledgehammer enter the van. A second member of the gang | :01:50. | :01:55.
climbs on board, clearly holding a shotgun. They force the sectrity | :01:56. | :01:59.
guard to open the first cell door. Moments later, you can see convicted | :02:00. | :02:06.
robber Ryan McDonald escaping. In the background, the guard is opening | :02:07. | :02:09.
the second cell door and prhsoner Stevie McMullen quickly runs out. | :02:10. | :02:17.
McDonald escaped on the back of a motorbike, McMullen in a car. Both | :02:18. | :02:20.
have admitted conspiracy to escape from lawful custody. Ten others have | :02:21. | :02:26.
also been convicted. This footage shows two of the gang, | :02:27. | :02:28.
Michael Morrison and Stephen Wilson, buying the sledgehammer used in the | :02:29. | :02:32.
hijacking from a store in the Manchester Arndale Centre. | :02:33. | :02:34.
also been convicted. This footage shows two of the Both | :02:35. | :02:36.
have been convicted of conspiracy to escape from lawful custody. And | :02:37. | :02:40.
Mavis Chapman, a 64`year`old grandmother, helped hide thd | :02:41. | :02:43.
sledgehammer as the gang went on the run. She was found guilty of | :02:44. | :02:48.
perverting the course of justice. They'll be sentenced next month | :02:49. | :02:51.
Liverpool's new Catholic conmen have robbed pensioners of | :02:52. | :02:59.
thousands of pounds using a tedious phone scam. They target elddrly | :03:00. | :03:04.
people to obtain their bank card details and even their cards, before | :03:05. | :03:07.
emptying their accounts. Detectives have now launched a major c`mpaign | :03:08. | :03:12.
to heighten awareness of thd con. So far, around 250 people in Greater | :03:13. | :03:16.
Manchester alone have becomd victims. Our chief reporter Dave | :03:17. | :03:22.
Guest has been to meet one of them. For Alan Griffiths it all started | :03:23. | :03:29.
with a phone call. A chap s`id, Mr Griffiths, I'm DCI Wilkinson. We | :03:30. | :03:34.
have a chap in custody here that has tried to use your card to bty a | :03:35. | :03:41.
laptop computer, and he said, I will let you speak to my colleagte, and | :03:42. | :03:46.
this lady came on the phone. She said, could you give me the | :03:47. | :03:50.
numbers. I said no. I said, give me your number, and I will ring you | :03:51. | :03:55.
back. I rang back, and the same lady answered the phone. She said, we | :03:56. | :04:00.
will cancel your cards now, Mr Griffiths. We will send a c`reer to | :04:01. | :04:07.
your house to collect the c`rds The following morning, I went into town | :04:08. | :04:11.
and said, let's check out the bank to see if the card has been | :04:12. | :04:15.
cancelled. We did, and they said, no. At that stage, we realised that | :04:16. | :04:22.
we had been fooled. ?500 had been taken from his account. A fdature of | :04:23. | :04:26.
this con is that the scammers will insist that you should phond them | :04:27. | :04:29.
back to check out their credentials to make sure they are genuine. They | :04:30. | :04:33.
may even give you a genuine number two phone. Your natural instinct is | :04:34. | :04:38.
to pick up the phone and di`l the number that you have been ghven The | :04:39. | :04:41.
problem is, the scammers have kept the line open at the end, so you | :04:42. | :04:46.
think you are going through to a genuine number, but you're heading | :04:47. | :04:53.
back to the con artists. If anybody brings you and asks for bank | :04:54. | :04:57.
numbers, credit card details, bank details, that won't be the police. | :04:58. | :05:02.
The police will not do that. Alan Pardew ACPO advises straightforward. | :05:03. | :05:09.
Be very, very cautious. One of the region's biggest Academy | :05:10. | :05:13.
providers has been told that it will not be able to take over anx new | :05:14. | :05:15.
schools until concerns about its schools' performance are addressed. | :05:16. | :05:18.
The University of Chester Academies Trust ` UCAT ` which runs nhne | :05:19. | :05:22.
schools, is one of 14 acadely providers who've been placed on a | :05:23. | :05:24.
restricted list by the Department for Education. UCAT acknowlddges | :05:25. | :05:27.
improvements have been slow in some cases, but says it has impldmented a | :05:28. | :05:33.
strategy of support. The Queen's visit to Blackbtrn next | :05:34. | :05:37.
month could be worth a millhon pounds to the local economy, | :05:38. | :05:43.
according to the council le`der The royal visit is expected to hncrease | :05:44. | :05:50.
trade in the town. The Queen's is attending the Royal Maundy Service | :05:51. | :05:53.
at Blackburn Cathedral, along with the Duke of Edinburgh. | :05:54. | :05:57.
Still to come on North West Tonight. The not`so`terrible two by two's: | :05:58. | :06:00.
why campaigning toddlers Abhgail and Isobel are one in two million. | :06:01. | :06:08.
And from House of Commons to classroom, we need to be politician | :06:09. | :06:11.
tackling educational problels by training as a teaching assistant. | :06:12. | :06:21.
Liverpool's new Catholic Archbishop says the church needs to re`ch out | :06:22. | :06:24.
to people affected by government cuts. Malcolm McMahon was speaking | :06:25. | :06:27.
to North West Tonight shortly after his appointment was announcdd today. | :06:28. | :06:30.
He's currently the Bishop of Nottingham, and will start his new | :06:31. | :06:33.
job later this year. Our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Gill, has bedn | :06:34. | :06:37.
speaking to him, and Andy joins us live from the Metropolitan Cathedral | :06:38. | :06:45.
now. So, a big job for him, Andy? It is, Roger. Malcolm McMahon 64 and | :06:46. | :06:49.
originally from London. He came to the priesthood relatively l`te in | :06:50. | :06:52.
life, after studying enginedring at the University of Manchester | :06:53. | :06:57.
Institute of Science and Technology. Then he worked for London transport. | :06:58. | :07:00.
He replaces Patrick Kelly, who retired through ill health just over | :07:01. | :07:03.
a year ago. Some commentators say it's a vital appointment for the | :07:04. | :07:07.
Catholic Church when it's f`cing a number of challenges. | :07:08. | :07:14.
The new archbishop poses for photographs outside Liverpool's | :07:15. | :07:19.
Catholic Cathedral. He said he was honoured and humbled to havd been | :07:20. | :07:24.
chosen by Pope Francis. He paid tribute to the Hillsborough families | :07:25. | :07:32.
in his first press conference. The determination of the people of | :07:33. | :07:35.
Liverpool to seek justice for the 96 who died so terribly in | :07:36. | :07:39.
Hillsborough, and the dignity of their families, when they wdre left | :07:40. | :07:44.
voiceless, is a powerful witness to us all. When we spoke in thd | :07:45. | :07:48.
cathedral, he said too often when the church faced criticism, some | :07:49. | :07:50.
justified, it turned inwards instead of out, to people who need ht. We've | :07:51. | :07:57.
got to be relevant to peopld who are the victims of modern life, people | :07:58. | :08:06.
who are suffering from the cuts with the government cuts whhch have | :08:07. | :08:14.
hit so many people. It is a difficult time for people when they | :08:15. | :08:18.
are hungry. Liverpool has a strong division of Anglican benefits that | :08:19. | :08:24.
were bishops and Catholic archbishops working together? Are | :08:25. | :08:28.
you going to carry on its own? s this is not an optional extra for | :08:29. | :08:32.
people of our faith. It is has them and essential, and has been for | :08:33. | :08:36.
years. This is not obvious to be true, but it is actually wh`t we | :08:37. | :08:42.
believe. After he led mass, we asked the congregation what they think of | :08:43. | :08:45.
the appointment, and what they think the new Archbishop's biggest | :08:46. | :08:48.
challenge will be. I think the biggest challenge in the face these | :08:49. | :08:50.
days is to bring people back into it. Liverpool has got a lot of | :08:51. | :08:54.
problems with poor people. Lalcolm McMahon is an Arsenal fan, `nd is | :08:55. | :08:57.
said to enjoy golf. He's promised to serve Catholics and non`Catholics in | :08:58. | :09:07.
his new role. There are mord than half a million baptised Catholics in | :09:08. | :09:11.
the archdiocese area, but church attendances falling, and thdre is a | :09:12. | :09:15.
shortage of priests as well. They are just two more of the issues | :09:16. | :09:18.
which Malcolm McMahon will let the deal with in his new job, and he | :09:19. | :09:22.
will be installed as the new archbishop in a ceremony here on May | :09:23. | :09:32.
Day. Thank you very much, Andy Gill. It's estimated that the odds of | :09:33. | :09:35.
having identical twins with Down's syndrome is around two millhon to | :09:36. | :09:38.
couple of lively guests in the couple of lively guests in the | :09:39. | :09:43.
studio. A couple from Chorldy gave birth gave birth to daughters | :09:44. | :09:46.
Abigail and Isobel. Both have Down's. They are now two and a half, | :09:47. | :09:50.
and like all toddlers, very bouncy and beautiful. It's lovely to have | :09:51. | :09:58.
them here. And today, espechally, because it is world Down's syndrome | :09:59. | :10:01.
day. Their parents Matt and Jodi Parry have now started up a campaign | :10:02. | :10:07.
to raise awareness called Twincess. We'll be meeting them all, plus big | :10:08. | :10:11.
brother Fin, in a moment. Btt first, let's have a look at them from | :10:12. | :10:13.
nought to two. A very happy family album. Let's | :10:14. | :10:58.
talk to the family. Jodi, M`tt and the twins. Then, of course, we will | :10:59. | :11:03.
hear what you have to say as well. But you have lodged a campahgn to | :11:04. | :11:07.
raise awareness of pounds. Just take us back, you are pregnant whth two | :11:08. | :11:13.
little babies. Just what is it like to get their babies is? It's a | :11:14. | :11:18.
devastating diagnosis, becatse I think everybody that has a baby when | :11:19. | :11:22.
they are pregnant, they expdct to have a perfect little child. I'm not | :11:23. | :11:27.
100% sure what perfect is, but to then find out that something is not | :11:28. | :11:30.
quite what you expect it was absolutely devastating. It `ffected | :11:31. | :11:36.
all of us and our family. Wd will sort of very ignorant to wh`t Down's | :11:37. | :11:40.
syndrome was. None of this new. You see people in the street, btt we had | :11:41. | :11:45.
no idea what to expect from it. Now, we would just not change these | :11:46. | :11:50.
two for the world. Absolutely not. They are gorgeous, and Fin hs too. | :11:51. | :11:55.
We mustn't forget you. But having twins anyway, plus a little boy | :11:56. | :12:00.
that must be a handful. The figure has been different? Have people told | :12:01. | :12:03.
you it has been particularlx different having twins with Down's? | :12:04. | :12:08.
I wouldn't say with any different. I've never had twins without it So | :12:09. | :12:11.
it is a difficult question to answer. I would say he has ` lot | :12:12. | :12:18.
harder work than she is! Abhgail is particularly inquisitive, isn't | :12:19. | :12:24.
she? Very much there. Matt, tellers about the campaign. Down's syndrome | :12:25. | :12:26.
is something everybody knows about. What are you hoping to achidve? To | :12:27. | :12:31.
be honest, a lot of it comes from prejudice. We don't see sochety as | :12:32. | :12:37.
prejudiced in any way, shapd or form. We see it as more of ` naivete | :12:38. | :12:41.
towards the condition. Like Jodi said, we didn't know everything | :12:42. | :12:44.
there with anything, and we were thrust into this world not knowing | :12:45. | :12:50.
anything about it. So we just want to spread awareness and education | :12:51. | :12:52.
about the condition, the side`effects, and some of the myths, | :12:53. | :12:59.
to try and dispel some of those They don't sever, you can sde that. | :13:00. | :13:07.
They are now! They have gond. So they don't sever, and there is every | :13:08. | :13:13.
chance they will achieve. I was going to ask, long`term, do you have | :13:14. | :13:17.
fears for the future as thex get older, as you get older? I fear for | :13:18. | :13:22.
thin as much as the girls. Ht is fair to say that we don't know what | :13:23. | :13:28.
the future holds. Thin is in mainstream primary school. We hope | :13:29. | :13:31.
the girls will also enter that. We have a great primary school lined up | :13:32. | :13:35.
with them should everything go to plan. We're not 100% certain of high | :13:36. | :13:39.
school, but we will enjoy the first eight or nine years of their life | :13:40. | :13:43.
before thinking about that. You have been a very good growth. Thd girls | :13:44. | :13:47.
have been great too. Tellers, what are your sisters like? ? Thdy are | :13:48. | :13:56.
very good. Our floor manager is now on all fours, keeping them both | :13:57. | :14:01.
entertain. Have a look. Verx quickly, you have your webshte, what | :14:02. | :14:08.
is it? It has been launched today. It is Twincess .co .uk. It has our | :14:09. | :14:12.
story, blogs about our first encounters will stop A627(M( and | :14:13. | :14:16.
lots of information. Thank xou so much for coming in. It was `n | :14:17. | :14:22.
absolute pleasure and a joy. It is wonderful, and they are all now over | :14:23. | :14:26.
there. Well done, Donna. Shd is now the crash. | :14:27. | :14:29.
The Barrow MP John Woodcock has swapped the House of Commons for the | :14:30. | :14:34.
classroom for a few hours a week. He's decided to train to become a | :14:35. | :14:37.
teaching assistant to highlhght the need to improve educational results | :14:38. | :14:41.
in the area. It's all part of his plan to launch a summer school aimed | :14:42. | :14:44.
at improving academic achievement in his constituency. Peter Marshall | :14:45. | :14:45.
reports. A world away from Westminstdr, but | :14:46. | :15:00.
happily behaviour at this jtnior school in Barrow beat flat `t Prime | :15:01. | :15:04.
Minister's Questions. I don't want them to see PMQs, because I think | :15:05. | :15:08.
people behave so disgracefully, shouting, and they couldn't get away | :15:09. | :15:15.
for this for 30 seconds. Thdy would be in detention immediately. I think | :15:16. | :15:18.
we have a lot to learn from this classroom, getting on very puietly | :15:19. | :15:25.
with their work. With six hours training a week, he will be | :15:26. | :15:30.
qualified by summer. The move follows serious concerns about | :15:31. | :15:33.
secondary education in Barrow, where schools are failing in GCSE results | :15:34. | :15:37.
are below the national aver`ge. That is why he has helped launch a summer | :15:38. | :15:43.
school for primary pupils. H want to try to make whatever differdnce I | :15:44. | :15:46.
can, and therefore bringing together businesses and volunteers in a | :15:47. | :15:50.
summer school this year could really focused minds and help thosd | :15:51. | :15:55.
children, but also try to spread the idea that we have got a | :15:56. | :15:59.
responsibility. Problems ard exacerbated by high levels of child | :16:00. | :16:03.
poverty in the area. Earlier intervention, where there are | :16:04. | :16:07.
problems, is very useful, bdcause it then prevent it becoming worse later | :16:08. | :16:10.
in secondary school when thd pressure is on. Can he cut ht in the | :16:11. | :16:19.
classroom? Simek are definitely I would have him back tomorrow. It is | :16:20. | :16:24.
great to have another role lodel in primary school. He asked a lot of | :16:25. | :16:31.
questions all time, to see how we are doing. He tells us words that we | :16:32. | :16:35.
don't understand in a way that we don't feel we are not very smart. | :16:36. | :16:44.
How strict is he? He's not strict. The pilot summer school will last | :16:45. | :16:48.
three weeks and involve 5010 `year`olds. If all goes well, it | :16:49. | :16:51.
will get bigger and hopefully become an annual event. | :16:52. | :16:53.
And they're also at education on this weekend's Sunday Polithcs with | :16:54. | :17:01.
our political editor Arif Ansari. Yes, we will be looking at funding | :17:02. | :17:06.
for science and research, and asking if our top universities and local | :17:07. | :17:09.
businesses get enough to colpete with the Golden Triangle of Oxford, | :17:10. | :17:14.
Cambridge and London. I will chew over the budget with the Labour MP | :17:15. | :17:18.
di Maria is Google and the Conservative MP Stephen O'Brien | :17:19. | :17:24.
Join at 11am on Sunday. And now back to the appointment Livdrpool's | :17:25. | :17:27.
new Catholic archbishop. Today, he said the church ndeds to | :17:28. | :17:31.
reach out to people affected by government cuts. Joining me now is | :17:32. | :17:39.
Christopher Lamb, from the Catholic weekly magazine The Tablet. This is | :17:40. | :17:43.
an important appointment in Liverpool, isn't it? Very | :17:44. | :17:47.
important. This town is traditionally the stronghold of the | :17:48. | :17:51.
Catholic religion in England away. It has the biggest number of | :17:52. | :17:54.
Catholics in England and Wales, and so the leader is a very significant | :17:55. | :17:59.
figure in the church. Social issues seem to be particularly important to | :18:00. | :18:05.
him. What sort of man is he? He is a very pastoral man. He is very | :18:06. | :18:09.
concerned about social issuds, particularly the poor and the whole | :18:10. | :18:12.
question about their cuts. Before he became a priest, he was working for | :18:13. | :18:21.
London buses, Sony has a good understanding of the world outside | :18:22. | :18:25.
the church. I think he will be a pastoral man, someone who whll reach | :18:26. | :18:29.
out not only to Catholics btt to non`Catholics as well. Do you think | :18:30. | :18:33.
this is the direction the Pope particularly want the church to be | :18:34. | :18:39.
going in now? Yes, I think so. Pope Francis has been clear he w`nts a | :18:40. | :18:42.
poor church for the poor he wants his bishops to be, as he sahd, smell | :18:43. | :18:48.
of the sheep. He wants them to do the people, to understand that their | :18:49. | :18:53.
concerns, and he tried to ldave them forward. Many thanks. Lots to fit in | :18:54. | :19:02.
with the sport. Richard is here Let's start with the Champions | :19:03. | :19:05.
League draw. It couldn't have gone any worse for Manchester Unhted | :19:06. | :19:08.
could it, Richard? No. Unitdd face defending champions Bayern Lunich in | :19:09. | :19:11.
the quarter finals. It's a repeat of the classic 1999 final, which United | :19:12. | :19:15.
won 2`1 with those two unforgettable goals in injury time. But B`yern are | :19:16. | :19:18.
favourites to retain their title. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also | :19:19. | :19:21.
still in there of course. Hdre's the full draw. Some bookies are offering | :19:22. | :19:29.
their biggest ever odds on ` United home win at 5 to 1. Those odds could | :19:30. | :19:36.
increase. We have just heard that Robin van Persie, who scored against | :19:37. | :19:39.
Olympiad cross, is injured, and could be out for up to six weeks. If | :19:40. | :19:43.
United do win on April first, then it could be the bookies who are made | :19:44. | :19:47.
to look like fools. United will have to do without Van Persie ag`inst | :19:48. | :19:53.
West Ham in the Premier league. Four of our top`flight clubs are in | :19:54. | :19:56.
action tomorrow, and are thdrefore still have a lot | :19:57. | :20:03.
five Premier league wins in a row, 18 goals scored, and just nhne games | :20:04. | :20:12.
left, serious momentum. Still an air of caution at Anfield. Therd hasn't | :20:13. | :20:18.
been talk of any league title. We are just enjoying how we ard | :20:19. | :20:24.
playing, and our world has been focused on | :20:25. | :20:30.
since Manchester City lost `t home to title rivals Chelsea, thdy have | :20:31. | :20:35.
been dumped out of the champions league and the FA Cup, and hnjuries | :20:36. | :20:39.
and loss of form have put the brakes on their season. With a couple of | :20:40. | :20:44.
games in hand, many still fdel the title is theirs to lose. Oh, what a | :20:45. | :20:51.
goal! You have to win the g`mes The important thing for the momdnt is, | :20:52. | :20:55.
we just depend on what we c`n do in the future. | :20:56. | :21:00.
Last time out, Everton put their FA Cup disappointment is firmlx behind | :21:01. | :21:06.
them with another victory and Goodison Park. In all competitions, | :21:07. | :21:11.
it is six straight wins at home for the blues. Their boss is confident | :21:12. | :21:16.
of making it seven. Our footballing has been full of confidence and full | :21:17. | :21:21.
of good play. We want to get as many as we can, our average of .7 home | :21:22. | :21:30.
having been exceptional. With the euphoria of Wednesday night's | :21:31. | :21:33.
Champions League fightback behind them, Manchester's red is now turn | :21:34. | :21:37.
their attentions to the Prelier league. Basically can't afford | :21:38. | :21:47.
another red face. There is no guarantee that one result ldads to | :21:48. | :21:50.
another, but you'd rather h`ve a good run than a bad one, and we got | :21:51. | :21:53.
a really good one midweek, so hopefully we can build on that. | :21:54. | :21:59.
In the Championship, Burnlex will be aiming to make it 15 games | :22:00. | :22:04.
undefeated tomorrow when thdy travel to Charlton. The Clarets ard already | :22:05. | :22:07.
ten points clear of the chasing pack in the second automatic prolotion | :22:08. | :22:11.
spot. In Super League, champions Wigan | :22:12. | :22:14.
Warriors won for the first time in eight visits to Warrington Wolves | :22:15. | :22:18.
last night, with a 12`4 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Thd | :22:19. | :22:20.
visitors scored two tries, one in either half, Liam Farrell crossing | :22:21. | :22:23.
before the break, then setthng up Blake Green after the re`st`rt. | :22:24. | :22:29.
Warrington's consolation trx was a solo interception by Gene Ormsby | :22:30. | :22:36.
near the end. The result le`ves both sides in mid`table. | :22:37. | :22:39.
Now, a reminder that Sport Relief begins tonight on BBC One straight | :22:40. | :22:43.
after this programme. Some of our football managers and former players | :22:44. | :22:46.
took part in a BBC Four programme that you can still see on iPlayer | :22:47. | :22:49.
called Some People With Jokds. Here's a snippet from former Bolton, | :22:50. | :22:52.
Everton and Manchester City player Peter Reid and Oldham managdr Lee | :22:53. | :22:59.
Johnson. Breaking news. Wayne Rooney's asked | :23:00. | :23:07.
for a transfer. David Moyes has asked him to put it in writhng. | :23:08. | :23:15.
That's the end of that one, then. Two monkeys in a bar. One ttrns to | :23:16. | :23:28.
the other and goes, HOWLING. The other says, put some more coal and | :23:29. | :23:33.
then. I can do this. Two goldfish in a tank. One says, | :23:34. | :23:38.
how do you drive this thing? Well, if you fancy a laugh, look `t these | :23:39. | :23:41.
pictures. We were running on a treadmhll | :23:42. | :23:45.
today. Here is an adult. Goodspeed, looking good. Graceful. Not so sure | :23:46. | :23:51.
about that. I did get a bit of speed up eventually. | :23:52. | :23:58.
He was taking the photo? Old dodgy knees. | :23:59. | :24:07.
Somebody didn't want to havd anything to do with all this | :24:08. | :24:11.
nonsense. She has done outshde. Apparently, there's something | :24:12. | :24:14.
unusual going on above the skies of Salford. Eno's there. | :24:15. | :24:23.
Yes, if you are in Salford tonight, you might catch them so these ` | :24:24. | :24:26.
laser beams, which are being projected from the roof of The Lowry | :24:27. | :24:30.
Theatre just across from us here at Media City. It's part of an | :24:31. | :24:33.
exhibition to commemorate the code breaker Alan Turing. Suzannd Hailey | :24:34. | :24:34.
reports. Bright, inspiring, and far | :24:35. | :24:50.
reaching, not unlike the man these lights are dedicated to. It was | :24:51. | :24:54.
developed a couple of years ago for his centenary, and I really wanted | :24:55. | :24:57.
to bring it to Manchester and be able to show it here as part of the | :24:58. | :25:02.
keys culture. It is a brillhant thing to happen. The exhibition is | :25:03. | :25:06.
attributed Alan Turing, who spent the last six years of his lhfe in | :25:07. | :25:11.
Manchester, and he was credhted with cracking the Nazi Enigma Code. This | :25:12. | :25:17.
is more than just a laser show. This colourful display has been designed | :25:18. | :25:20.
using Morse code signals, translated into beams of light, making up the | :25:21. | :25:25.
word thank you. The tribute comes to Salford in the week the govdrnment | :25:26. | :25:30.
announced it would provide over ?40 million for a new research Hnstitute | :25:31. | :25:38.
and be set in al ensuring's name. It is a really great place for it to | :25:39. | :25:41.
have ended up. It is like the end of the stories that the piece. It was | :25:42. | :25:45.
shown in Conway, then in Liverpool at the 70th anniversary of the | :25:46. | :25:50.
Battle of the Atlantic, 2020 here to his spiritual home is a really | :25:51. | :25:53.
fantastic conclusion to the story. The lasers will be on displ`y for | :25:54. | :26:00.
the next week. It has been a day of sunshine and | :26:01. | :26:03.
showers, and as we look at the headline for the weekend, it is not | :26:04. | :26:08.
looking brilliant. It has got cold over the weekend, chilly, and will | :26:09. | :26:11.
be a mixture of some sunshine, chilly over the next two or three | :26:12. | :26:17.
days, and wintry showers as well. For tonight, for example, wd start | :26:18. | :26:21.
up with heavy, wintry showers, slowly working in across thd Irish | :26:22. | :26:25.
Sea. They will be falling on high ground as sleet and snow, clearing | :26:26. | :26:29.
the way overnight on the other side of the Pennines. Under clearing | :26:30. | :26:34.
skies, a chilly night, tempdratures down to maybe two Celsius, `nd we | :26:35. | :26:38.
are likely to see icy patchds and frost as well. The headline for | :26:39. | :26:42.
tomorrow is very similar to today, a mixture of sunshine and wintry | :26:43. | :26:46.
showers. We start our chillx and mostly dry, bright, plenty of | :26:47. | :26:50.
sunshine around, but in between plenty of showers working in. These | :26:51. | :26:54.
will again be wintry, so maxbe sleet and snow on high ground. We could | :26:55. | :26:57.
see Hale and thunder as well in between the sunshine. I think there | :26:58. | :27:01.
was a little bit of everythhng tomorrow. It will not feel | :27:02. | :27:05.
particularly warm, because ht is quite breezy. Eyes of seven | :27:06. | :27:10.
Celsius, six Celsius in one or two spots. We head into Sunday `nd it | :27:11. | :27:14.
would be a touch dry. Maybe brighter, highs of eight Celsius. | :27:15. | :27:19.
For next week, we will see the temperatures will not recovdr. They | :27:20. | :27:23.
will stay in single figures. Actor you in the studio. Thank yot very | :27:24. | :27:29.
much. Sport relief, 7pm. Looking forward to it? I am looking | :27:30. | :27:33.
forward to it. I promise I promised do some extra swimming tomorrow to | :27:34. | :27:38.
do some extra money. It is `ll worthwhile. Drop a pound in that | :27:39. | :27:42.
part as you go. Here's the view of Salford. Have a lovely evenhng. Look | :27:43. | :27:45.
out for the lasers. Good night. | :27:46. | :27:49. |
