Good evening. A campaign to lower the age for | :00:11. | :00:15.
cervical screening to 16, in memory of a teenager from Wirral, has | :00:16. | :00:18.
become the most signed e`petition ever. The family of 19`year`old | :00:19. | :00:22.
Sophie Jones from Eastham, who died last weekend, claim if she'd been | :00:23. | :00:27.
tested it could have saved her. More than 310,000 people have signed the | :00:28. | :00:29.
petition, three times the ntmber required to prompt a Commons debate | :00:30. | :00:41.
on the subject. It's been more than 60 years since | :00:42. | :00:45.
the end of the Korean war. Now associations formed to provhde | :00:46. | :00:48.
support and a network of frhendship to those who were involved `re being | :00:49. | :00:51.
wound up. Including one in Greater Manchester which, at one pohnt, was | :00:52. | :00:55.
the largest of its kind. For a quarter of a century, Korean | :00:56. | :00:59.
War veterans have held a melorial service at Christ Church in Bolton, | :01:00. | :01:02.
a chance for men such as Brhan Hough to remember the role they played in | :01:03. | :01:06.
the three year conflict. But this year will be the l`st time | :01:07. | :01:16.
they'll congregate here. Our numbers have declined. We have | :01:17. | :01:26.
lost a locked of people. `` a lot of people. | :01:27. | :01:30.
The Greater Manchester Branch ` once the the largest in the country ` is | :01:31. | :01:33.
disappearing, along with other branches. 60 years after thd | :01:34. | :01:36.
conflict that killed 39 men in Greater Manchester and 1,100 British | :01:37. | :01:41.
service personnel nationallx. We think that we did a proud thing | :01:42. | :01:47.
by having this organisation. They would be very proud of what we have | :01:48. | :01:53.
done. Each branch has said that they will carry on as a social group and | :01:54. | :01:57.
they will meet every month whilst they are still able, they whll meet | :01:58. | :02:01.
for lunch. Those memories of the forgotten war | :02:02. | :02:04.
will be kept alive as friendships remain. | :02:05. | :02:13.
People living in a flood prone Lancashire village are being given | :02:14. | :02:16.
training to prevent a repeat of the deluge which cause major dalage two | :02:17. | :02:19.
years ago. Croston was flooded twice in a matter of weeks over the summer | :02:20. | :02:25.
of 2012. It's all hands to the pump. | :02:26. | :02:28.
Croston's villagers have calpaigned for and now have been traindd how to | :02:29. | :02:32.
use this high`volume pump to keep their homes dry. | :02:33. | :02:35.
We've got it set at the minhmum speed at the moment. | :02:36. | :02:38.
It has cost ?21,000. Croston Parish Council, the Environment Agdncy and | :02:39. | :02:40.
Lancashire County Council contributed and this is why. | :02:41. | :02:48.
Summer 2012, and more than 70 homes in Croston were flooded twice in a | :02:49. | :02:54.
matter of weeks. The River Xarrow gets so full that rain backs up into | :02:55. | :02:59.
streets and homes. Kath Almond is among those villagers who h`ve been | :03:00. | :03:02.
trained to use the pump. When it gets to a certain ldvel the | :03:03. | :03:05.
water can't get into the river, because the river is higher than the | :03:06. | :03:09.
drains. That is when everything backs up. | :03:10. | :03:13.
The pump will clear up excess water. It will be switched on at the first | :03:14. | :03:17.
sign of flooding. But it is a temporary solution to the problems. | :03:18. | :03:21.
A permanent solution would be a 600 metre long five metre high flood | :03:22. | :03:26.
embankment built upstream. Ht will cost ?6 million, two million of | :03:27. | :03:31.
which has yet to be found. Hf all goes well, construction will start | :03:32. | :03:36.
in March next year. We are very glad to have thhs pump | :03:37. | :03:40.
and it is an interim solution, but as glad as I will be to see it | :03:41. | :03:44.
arriving in Croston, when the bigger solution arrives and the pulp can go | :03:45. | :03:59.
away, I will be happier still. Over 8000 runners took to the | :04:00. | :04:02.
streets of Liverpool today hn the city's half marathon. The event was | :04:03. | :04:05.
celebrating its 21st anniversary this year and starting off the race | :04:06. | :04:08.
was Liverpool manager Brend`n Rodgers. | :04:09. | :04:13.
It is wonderful and it is stch a cold morning as well. But for all | :04:14. | :04:17.
the people doing it, it is brilliant. I hurt my foot in a | :04:18. | :04:24.
football game, so I could not run today, but I am here to support | :04:25. | :04:34.
everyone and for our team. Preston's Laura Massaro has become | :04:35. | :04:36.
world squash champion. The 30`year`old world number two beat | :04:37. | :04:39.
seeded Egyptian Nour El Sherbini in the final in Malayasia. She's the | :04:40. | :04:43.
first British woman to win the title in 15 years. | :04:44. | :04:52.
A good day for the region's Super League teams Widnes edged a tight | :04:53. | :04:55.
game at Hull FC, winning7`0. Salford Red Devils beat Castleford 23`1 at | :04:56. | :04:59.
home and top of the table St Helens came away from Wakefield with a win. | :05:00. | :05:04.
24`16. Now the weather with Kay Forster. | :05:05. | :05:14.
We have had some sunshine this afternoon and the clouds have been | :05:15. | :05:20.
fading away, thanks to this high pressure. We are entering into a dry | :05:21. | :05:27.
night, and with the wind falling, it will be a cold night. Away from the | :05:28. | :05:35.
coast, there will be a frost. Just about holding above freezing near | :05:36. | :05:40.
the coast. Tomorrow, it will be a cold but right start with lots of | :05:41. | :05:45.
sunshine. The cloud will increase from the West, and maybe sole rain | :05:46. | :05:50.
from the Isle of Man. That dastern areas holding on to the dry and | :05:51. | :05:55.
bright weather but feeling warmer, highs of ten or 11 Celsius. | :05:56. | :05:57.
I will be back at 10:15pm. Goodbye. Hello. Following today's showers, | :05:58. | :06:11.
tonight is going to be much colder. Clear skies, light winds, a recipe | :06:12. | :06:16.
for a widespread frost. Sharp showers for the next couple of | :06:17. | :06:20.
hours. From East Yorkshire to the south-east. Hail and thunder. Skies | :06:21. | :06:25.
will clear across many areas. Temperatures tumbling across rural | :06:26. | :06:31.
parts it could be as low as minus six. Not as cold across Northern | :06:32. | :06:35.
Ireland and the far south-west. Increasing cloud ahead of the | :06:36. | :06:36.
weather | :06:37. | :06:37. |
