Good evening. Representatives of The Co`operative Group, meeting in

Manchester today, have voted unanimously in favour of proposals

to overhaul the way the 150`year`old company is run. The mutual, founded

in Rochdale in the mid 1800s approved the plans for elected board

directors and greater powers for individual members in line with

reforms suggested in a report by the former City minister Lord Myners,

published earlier this month. Police are appealing for information

after a 76`year`old man died when he fell from a motorway bridge in

Denton. At about 18:50PM last night the man fell on to the M67 westbound

carriageway into the pathway of moving traffic. A skip van managed

to swerve and avoid the man, but a transit van hit him and he was

pronounced dead at the scene. The Royal Navy joined forces with

Greater Manchester Police and Fire Service today to encourage people to

be safe around the water as part of the Safe4Summer campaign. The Navy's

fast patrol vessel, HMS Biter took to the water in Salford Quays with

the help of students from Salford and Manchester University cadets and

carried out a man`overboard drill. One of the Lake District's biggest

stars returned to Kendal today for the premiere of his latest film.

Postman Pat was born in the town in 1978 when his creator John Cunliffe

was living near the Greenside Post Office. Today they were reunited on

the red carpet at a special screening of Postman Pat The Movie.

Naomi Cornwell was there. Now a sequin clad Hollywood star,

Postman Pat came home to his birthplace today to host a local

premiere of his new movie. No, I missed my...hang on a minute. Can I

just start again please? In the film, Pat enters a TV talent show

hosted by a Simon Cowbell. But while he's away, robots take over his

postal service. The Patbot 3000. He is an ordinary man but he is like a

superhero. Is your postman like that? No. Because it originated from

Cumbria makes it more exciting here. I like it because he has a quad bike

and a helicopter. He is one of the great British icons. I'm thrilled to

be postman Pat. Mrs Goggins' post office was based by a real one, here

at Greenside in Kendal. It closed in 2003, but its role in Postman Pat's

success has not been forgotten. We are literally within about 100

metres from where I lived in Kendal. Just up the hill behind the brewery

centre, I sat in a little back bedroom stusy writing. Fans will be

pleased to see despite the high tech make over, Postman Pat is as

The Queen's Baton has continued its tour of the Isle of Man tour as part

of a nine`month journey around the Commonwealth nations and

territories. The baton is on the island for four days before

continuing onto Northern Ireland on Tuesday. As part of it's tour it was

carried up to the top of the Laxey Wheel, the largest working water

wheel in the world! What's great about that Baton is

that it is the real thing that has been all over the world. Unlike the

Olympic Torch where there are dozens of them for sale, there is only one

Commonwealth Baton that has been touched by thousands of people. It's

been underwater, across deserts and now it has been to the top of Laxey

Wheel. So, It is great. In fact it's a huge weekend for

sport in the north west. In Rugby League. Magic weekend is well

underway with all 14 sides brought together for seven fixtures at the

Etihad over two days. Earlier this afternoon, Widnes Vikings overcame

Salford Red Devils 30`24 to claim their first ever Magic Weekend

victory. In a few minutes Wigan Warriors take on Leeds Rhinos and

tomorrow evening Warrington Wolves will play St Helens. The streets of

central Manchester were transformed into a top class athletics venue

today for the Great City Games. Double Olympic silver medallist

Yohan Blake won the men's 150 meters on the track on Deansgate, though he

failed to beat Usain Bolt's 2009 world best, while Olympic champion

Greg Rutherford won the men's long jump in a temporary arena built in

Albert Square. And now for the weather.

Good evening. It has been a fine day today. Temperatures have been up

into the 20s. It'll be cloudy tomorrow but we will stay dry and on

the warm side. There will be cloud around tonight but we stayed dry,

some clear spells other temperatures will be on the muggy side, around

ten to 12 Celsius. A bright start for many of us tomorrow morning,

there will be some sunshine but in general there will be a little more

of cloud, particularly in the Isle of Man. Best sunshine across the

south which is where the best of the temperatures are, around 22 Celsius.
