it's goodbye Welcome to North West Tonight with | :00:00. | :00:00.
Roger Johnson and Beccy Mehan. A children's doctor from Manchester | :00:00. | :00:07.
is charged with child sex offences The Hillsborough inquiry hears how | :00:08. | :00:11.
stadium safety concerns were raised How the beautiful game, | :00:12. | :00:27.
and comedian John Bishop, are giving The whole population that plunges | :00:28. | :00:31.
into the sea! Bracing Blackpool gets | :00:32. | :00:43.
a step closer to a new museum. A paediatric doctor has been | :00:44. | :00:53.
charged with child sex offences. Greater Manchester Police released | :00:54. | :00:58.
the news within the past hour The man is said to have worked | :00:59. | :01:01.
at a number of hospitals in Greater Manchester | :01:02. | :01:05.
and detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have made | :01:06. | :01:08.
contact with him via the internet. Our chief reporter, Dave Guest, | :01:09. | :01:11.
is at police headquarters now. What more can you tell us | :01:12. | :01:15.
about this man? He is a 31`year`old and works as a | :01:16. | :01:29.
junior doctor in the theatrics. I understand he has worked in a number | :01:30. | :01:35.
of hospitals in Greater Manchester. `` in paediatrics. He has been | :01:36. | :01:40.
charged with possessing indecent images of children and engaging in | :01:41. | :01:45.
sexual activity with a child. What have police told us so far? | :01:46. | :01:50.
They say he was first arrested on the 2nd of May on suspicion of | :01:51. | :01:54.
possessing indecent images of children. On that day, a search was | :01:55. | :01:59.
carried out at a house and a computer and other equipment were | :02:00. | :02:03.
seized. As a result of reviewing those items, they further arrested | :02:04. | :02:07.
him on me the 22nd on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity with a | :02:08. | :02:14.
child, a boy of 15. The Chiefs super and says that this investigation is | :02:15. | :02:20.
still very much in its early stages. `` Chiefs super and in the. She says | :02:21. | :02:26.
that she understands that people may be concerned because he has worked | :02:27. | :02:29.
in hospitals but at this stage the investigation is very much focusing | :02:30. | :02:34.
on people who he may have met through the Internet rather than his | :02:35. | :02:36.
employment. What happens next? | :02:37. | :02:39.
He is due to appear at Crown Court He is due to appear at Crown Court | :02:40. | :02:45.
process. As I say, the investigation process. As I say, the investigation | :02:46. | :02:48.
is in its early stages. Thank you for that. | :02:49. | :02:50.
A jury has heard that ?120,000 was spent on safety at Hillsborough | :02:51. | :02:54.
An incident in 1981 at the same ground when several fans were | :02:55. | :03:10.
injured lead to plans being drawn up for improvements to the terracing | :03:11. | :03:13.
and barriers. Most were never implemented. Our correspondent joins | :03:14. | :03:19.
us now from Warrington. Tell us more. What is important for the | :03:20. | :03:27.
jurors is that they get a real understanding of how events | :03:28. | :03:31.
escalated 25 years ago, resulting in the death of 96 football fans. Last | :03:32. | :03:36.
week, the jurors were taken to Hillsborough to gain an insight into | :03:37. | :03:40.
Today, the heard evidence from a Today, the heard evidence from a | :03:41. | :03:51.
structural engineer. In 1979, a safety act was brought in which | :03:52. | :03:54.
meant stadiums needed have a safety certificate. The court heard how | :03:55. | :03:59.
Sheffield Wednesday have spent ?120,000 in order to be granted that | :04:00. | :04:03.
certificate. Concerns were raised following a crush in 1981. The court | :04:04. | :04:09.
heard that recommendations for safety changes to gates and | :04:10. | :04:11.
turnstiles were made but never carried out. Christina Lambert said | :04:12. | :04:18.
that even after evidence on the 15th of April 1989, crash barriers did | :04:19. | :04:23.
not meet the recommended safety requirements and that police had | :04:24. | :04:27.
raised concerns before the disaster. A lot of evidence centred on other | :04:28. | :04:31.
sporting disasters here and abroad, today. Tell of more about that. John | :04:32. | :04:40.
described a disaster in 1946 in which 33 Bolton Wanderers fans were | :04:41. | :04:44.
crushed. He also talked about a fire which killed 66 spectators in | :04:45. | :04:51.
Bradford. And on that same day, a 15`year`old boy was crushed in | :04:52. | :04:54.
Birmingham city. What lessons had been learned and was there in the | :04:55. | :04:58.
robust legislation in place? The inquest continues. | :04:59. | :04:59.
Thank you very much. An investigation's underway after | :05:00. | :05:02.
a man was shot in a pub in Salford. Police were called to the | :05:03. | :05:05.
Ashley Brook Pub on Liverpool Street at around 11:30 | :05:06. | :05:08.
last night. The victim's currently | :05:09. | :05:09.
being treated in hospital. It's the fourth shooting | :05:10. | :05:11.
in the area in a month. Detectives say | :05:12. | :05:14.
the incidents aren't linked. A 59 year old man has been charged | :05:15. | :05:16.
by detectives investigating historic sexual abuse at music schools | :05:17. | :05:19.
in Manchester. Nicholas Smith has been charged with | :05:20. | :05:22.
one count of indecent assault. It relates to | :05:23. | :05:26.
an alleged incident involving a teenage girl, between 1976 and | :05:27. | :05:27.
1978, who was a pupil at Chetham's Police have released this image of a | :05:28. | :05:48.
man who they want to talk to about a scam that was used to dupe a | :05:49. | :05:52.
pensioner out of his entire life savings. | :05:53. | :05:57.
A Victoria Cross recipient from Middleton has been recognised | :05:58. | :05:59.
in the town, with the unveiling of a street sign in his honour. | :06:00. | :06:03.
Lance Corporal Joel Halliwell was awarded the medal after rescuing | :06:04. | :06:05.
ten injured soldiers from no`man's land during the First World War. | :06:06. | :06:09.
The region's Liberal Democrats are debating their future tonight | :06:10. | :06:11.
after another dreadful showing at the polls. | :06:12. | :06:13.
We'll be hearing from him in a minute. | :06:14. | :06:19.
But first Beccy's been looking at how the region's political | :06:20. | :06:22.
landscape has changed in the wake of the European elections. | :06:23. | :06:26.
UKIP's national success has been replicated here in the North West, | :06:27. | :06:29.
even though they didn't top the vote. | :06:30. | :06:33.
Labour received 34% of the votes cast. | :06:34. | :06:35.
That meant that three of the eight seats here changed colour. | :06:36. | :06:42.
Two of them won by UKIP, one by Labour. | :06:43. | :06:45.
Nick Griffin, the British National Party Leader who | :06:46. | :06:48.
He was one of ten Liberal Democrat MEPs kicked`out across the country. | :06:49. | :06:56.
Here in the North West, they have been wiped`out. | :06:57. | :06:59.
We'll now be represented in Europe by three MEPs from both Labour | :07:00. | :07:02.
For the Lib Dems, the European election disappointment | :07:03. | :07:06.
followed a miserable set of local election results last week. | :07:07. | :07:10.
Stuart Flinders has been speaking to their outgoing MEP about the | :07:11. | :07:13.
problems now facing his party and about needing to find a new job. | :07:14. | :07:19.
Chris Davies will be spending rather more time in his garden | :07:20. | :07:21.
in the Pennines this summer than he would have liked. | :07:22. | :07:24.
It is quite a contrast. Two months ago I became a meet the offer here | :07:25. | :07:37.
with an environmental author, if you like, in Brussels for the work I | :07:38. | :07:42.
have done. Two monthly tour, despite all of the work I have done in | :07:43. | :07:46.
exposing expensed fraud and my own transparency in financial matters | :07:47. | :07:49.
and a real sense of achievement over the years, I am out on my ear. | :07:50. | :07:55.
The voters have deserted the Lib Dems. | :07:56. | :07:59.
He says it's the cost of being in coalition. | :08:00. | :08:05.
I support Nick Clegg. I think he has done a fantastic job. What little is | :08:06. | :08:13.
calling for him to go? I can understand that everybody wants a | :08:14. | :08:16.
magic bullet but changing the leader and not changing the policies, and | :08:17. | :08:21.
nobody wants to, I don't see that this will do anything other than | :08:22. | :08:24.
give us a couple of weeks used in the polls. | :08:25. | :08:25.
Chris Davies burst onto the scene when he won the Westminster seat | :08:26. | :08:29.
of Littleborough and Saddleworth in a byelection in 1995.The | :08:30. | :08:31.
lawmaker became lawbreaker when he walked into Stockport Police | :08:32. | :08:33.
Station with a small amount of cannabis in a protest against | :08:34. | :08:37.
drugs laws, later pleading guilty to possession of a Class B drug. | :08:38. | :08:40.
He doesn't rule out standing for Europe again, and admits that | :08:41. | :08:43.
whatever happens he'll be well looked after by Brussels. | :08:44. | :08:49.
The pension kicks in at 63. Of course, there have been times where | :08:50. | :08:56.
I have criticised it and said we should change these arrangements. | :08:57. | :09:00.
Just at this moment, I am not criticising the! You will probably | :09:01. | :09:05.
end up earning more on the European pension than many people do on their | :09:06. | :09:13.
salaries. Yes, it shed no more tears for an MEP. I shed no tears for the | :09:14. | :09:16.
staff I have to sack. It may not be the last we hear | :09:17. | :09:20.
of Chris Davies. Stuart Flinders, | :09:21. | :09:23.
BBC North West Tonight. The Liberal Democrats in Liverpool | :09:24. | :09:25.
announced tonight that they are to hold a meeting to discuss | :09:26. | :09:27.
Nick Clegg's leadership after they were virtually wiped`out | :09:28. | :09:30.
in the local elections last week. The Lib Dem MP for Southport, | :09:31. | :09:33.
John Pugh, The results are very depressing | :09:34. | :09:39.
because we lost 72% of councillors that dude. 91% of the Euro MPs. | :09:40. | :09:47.
There is a large part of England without Liberal Democrat | :09:48. | :09:52.
representation and no opposition to Labour. How worried are you? In my | :09:53. | :09:56.
constituency, things went well. We are one of the strongholds, the rare | :09:57. | :10:03.
islands. The trouble is there are so many black holes opening round of | :10:04. | :10:08.
that nobody can be sure of outcome. You need to change leader? My | :10:09. | :10:14.
personal preference is for Vince Cable, who I believe would resonate | :10:15. | :10:20.
better with many voters and who is a continuity candidate in the sense | :10:21. | :10:23.
that he has been in government, is part of the Coalition. He can defend | :10:24. | :10:27.
the record and is very popular. He does not want the job. He said now | :10:28. | :10:32.
was not the time for fighting within yourselves. I think Vince would, | :10:33. | :10:41.
where there are a vacancy, put his name forward. You have Nick Clegg, | :10:42. | :10:47.
currently being pilloried for abandoning his tuition fees pledge. | :10:48. | :10:52.
You have somebody like Nigel Farage who abandoned his whole money fast | :10:53. | :10:55.
and did very well. That is a problem that we have to analyse, understand | :10:56. | :11:03.
and correct for. `` whole manifesto. Part of what you'd rather is that | :11:04. | :11:08.
the Lib Dems have never had to make the tough decisions and affect | :11:09. | :11:11.
people 's lives. You have been the refuge for the disgruntled voter, if | :11:12. | :11:15.
you like. No, you're not in that position any more and UKIP, perhaps, | :11:16. | :11:20.
have taken that ground. I don't think that's a totally satisfactory | :11:21. | :11:23.
explanation for our decline. In many areas of the country, a local | :11:24. | :11:27.
government, we held power on councils. Because we held power and | :11:28. | :11:31.
made difficult decisions, we did not then lose votes. In many cases we | :11:32. | :11:37.
increased our. We have made some mistakes in coalition and we have to | :11:38. | :11:40.
rectify them. But thank you for your time. | :11:41. | :11:43.
A Lancaster man has become the first in the country to face | :11:44. | :11:46.
a charge under the newly amended Dangerous Dogs Act. | :11:47. | :11:48.
The law now allows owners to be prosecuted if dogs carry out | :11:49. | :12:36.
This prosecution is the first since new amendments to | :12:37. | :12:39.
the Dangerous Dogs Act came into force countrywide on May the 13th. | :12:40. | :13:49.
And it has been one of the nation's favourite resorts for decades and | :13:50. | :14:06.
the council wants to open a museum to celebrate the history of the | :14:07. | :14:07.
The First World War reshaped a continent and touched the lives | :14:08. | :14:12.
As we near the centenary of the outbreak many people are | :14:13. | :14:16.
finding out about their families' links to the conflict. | :14:17. | :14:19.
One of those is Graham Liver who's one of ours and breakfast | :14:20. | :14:22.
He's been on a journey to Flanders to follow in the footsteps of two | :14:23. | :14:29.
of his relatives who lost their lives on the western front. | :14:30. | :14:44.
Like so many parts of the Northwest, suffered many casualties during the | :14:45. | :14:50.
First World War, including two members of my family. Amongst the | :14:51. | :14:55.
names of the men who never came home are my great great cousins John and | :14:56. | :15:01.
Tom. They came from a part of the city which suffered heavy losses. It | :15:02. | :15:04.
seems to have been the working`class parts of town that where worst | :15:05. | :15:08.
affected. There were couple of streets that had 20 people killed. | :15:09. | :15:13.
Parts of Stewart and were badly affected also. It is clear that they | :15:14. | :15:18.
made the ultimate sacrifice but for me they are still just names on a | :15:19. | :15:22.
plaque. I wanted to find out what happened to them in Belgium and it | :15:23. | :15:25.
is a journey which almost certainly started here. John lived with his | :15:26. | :15:32.
mum and dad and four months after signing up for the Lancashire | :15:33. | :15:37.
Fusiliers swapped the linoleum works for the battlefields of Flanders. It | :15:38. | :15:41.
all started for him here. It did indeed. The British were attacking a | :15:42. | :15:46.
German fortified position here. In front of the farm was a range of | :15:47. | :15:51.
trenches, bunkers, fortifications. Just there. They were called | :15:52. | :15:57.
galleries. So you can see the farm and galleries commanded the | :15:58. | :15:59.
battlefields. John was then wounded on the field. He was taken to a | :16:00. | :16:05.
dressing station in the corner of the battlefield and was obsessed and | :16:06. | :16:10.
taken back, sadly, to where he died a few days later. This is the | :16:11. | :16:20.
cemetery. He is buried just in this next role. 4231, Lancashire | :16:21. | :16:27.
Fusiliers, 24th of September 1970. Gone but not forgotten. `` 1917. | :16:28. | :16:38.
For those who do not have a known grave, they are remembered every | :16:39. | :16:53.
night in April. `` Ypres. TRUMPETS PLAY | :16:54. | :17:00.
night in April. `` Ypres. TRUMPETS | :17:01. | :17:07.
What an extraordinary journey. Tom, he mentioned at the start, we will | :17:08. | :17:14.
find out what happened to him tomorrow. Apparently he survived the | :17:15. | :17:19.
battle of the song but was sent back out to Flanders were sadly he lost | :17:20. | :17:22.
his life. Fascinating series. Amazing. Let's move on. | :17:23. | :17:27.
A major football competition took place in Liverpool today but it's | :17:28. | :17:30.
All the players are, or were, homeless. | :17:31. | :17:33.
They play in their own league and today was the end | :17:34. | :17:36.
The aim is to give another focus to the lives | :17:37. | :17:40.
of homeless people to help them find a job and somewhere to live. | :17:41. | :17:43.
And as Lindsey Prosser reports they had | :17:44. | :17:45.
This is much more than a game of football, here they're building | :17:46. | :17:56.
confidence to rebuild lives and comic John Bishop is supporting the | :17:57. | :17:59.
You are on the fringes of society if you're homeless. People judge you | :18:00. | :18:13.
before they know you. This gives them an opportunity to realise that | :18:14. | :18:17.
they are not alone and have some value. | :18:18. | :18:19.
James became homeless as teenager, when his mum died. | :18:20. | :18:21.
Playing in a homeless football team gave him back his self esteem. | :18:22. | :18:24.
James is now at university and plays semi`professional football. | :18:25. | :18:28.
It gave me the confidence to play again and even now to be a role | :18:29. | :18:34.
model to the others and coach them. He may not have been playing | :18:35. | :18:37.
John Bishop was providing I will be juggling bottles in the | :18:38. | :18:50.
minute! Everybody has come on a level playing field and are able to | :18:51. | :18:55.
just be themselves. You can be having a bad day and then you look | :18:56. | :18:57.
forward to this competition to stop it brings people closer together. | :18:58. | :19:02.
You get the adrenaline. Playing with friends and helping each other out, | :19:03. | :19:03.
it is good. The football teams are a way | :19:04. | :19:07.
of enabling outreach workers to gain the trust of homeless people | :19:08. | :19:10.
and help them to get back on track. The football is the carrot. Once | :19:11. | :19:19.
being gauge them in football we can link them into other services. | :19:20. | :19:21.
Health, education, training or stop it is important. Homeless people are | :19:22. | :19:27.
on the bottom rung of the ladder and it is about as pulling them up. | :19:28. | :19:30.
It's hope the scheme can be extended to other cities across the UK. | :19:31. | :19:34.
Lindsey Prosser, BBC North West Tonight, Liverpool. | :19:35. | :19:38.
They had a good day. Almost as good as this lot. I do not have the best | :19:39. | :19:44.
glass of! I thought that was your costume for | :19:45. | :19:48.
the summer party. What can you say? ! You are probably wondering where | :19:49. | :19:54.
it will all end. The Premier League at this rate! | :19:55. | :20:09.
Fleetwood are promoted for the first time of their history! | :20:10. | :20:15.
The moment when Fleetwood town and owns themselves on the biggest | :20:16. | :20:19.
stage. Absolutely amazing. Words fail me. It is a lot of hard work by | :20:20. | :20:26.
a lot of people. I cannot believe it. I am still pinching myself. This | :20:27. | :20:35.
is unbelievable. CHEERING | :20:36. | :20:42.
What a moment this is. Fans who have seen their team... | :20:43. | :20:45.
SHOUTING They are ready to go to League one! | :20:46. | :20:52.
Really fantastic. It means everything to us, everything. | :20:53. | :21:03.
COMMENTATOR: In! That bit of luck that you need in games like this and | :21:04. | :21:08.
I am over the moon to do it for the boys. I was crying excellent Mac | :21:09. | :21:16.
Electric. The perfect present for the older on his 44th birthday. You | :21:17. | :21:23.
cannot buy that feeling. Long may it continue. `` the owner. Not just the | :21:24. | :21:32.
boys but myself and the staff, they deserved this day. We look forward | :21:33. | :21:39.
to next season. For the cod Army, next season is the | :21:40. | :21:43.
chance to shake up the big boys of League one cannot come soon enough. | :21:44. | :21:50.
Safe to say they enjoyed their day out! | :21:51. | :21:54.
Looks like a lot of fun. Well done to Fleetwood and all the | :21:55. | :21:59.
people involved. Tranmere Rovers have appointed a new | :22:00. | :22:05.
manager. He succeeds Ron Amery was sacked after admitting breaching FA | :22:06. | :22:09.
betting regulations. The Roses match looks to be heading | :22:10. | :22:14.
towards a draw. Lancashire bowled Yorkshire out for 243`5. | :22:15. | :22:20.
That is a lead of 130 going into the final day of the match. | :22:21. | :22:27.
Can be an exciting finish if the weather holds out. | :22:28. | :22:31.
It was the world's first working`class seaside resort. | :22:32. | :22:35.
Blackpool Council wants to create a ?20 million easy to showcase the | :22:36. | :22:39.
ten's history. Today, the council received more than ?1 million of | :22:40. | :22:43.
lottery money to develop the plan. They hope the museum will be located | :22:44. | :22:48.
in the Winter Gardens. Blackpool has been a booming seaside | :22:49. | :22:52.
resort since the 1850s. It soon become the place to come when the | :22:53. | :22:56.
factories closed for the week. Now, the council says it should have a | :22:57. | :22:59.
museum to celebrate its rich history. It is a real opportunity to | :23:00. | :23:04.
bring all of the threads Blackpool live together. The entertainment | :23:05. | :23:08.
culture, the party town reputation that we have. You know, the sun, | :23:09. | :23:14.
sand, sea and donkeys. To allow people to explore what lies behind | :23:15. | :23:19.
that. The plan is to place the museum in the Winter Gardens. The | :23:20. | :23:22.
museum would cost around ?21 million. The museum hopes half `` | :23:23. | :23:28.
the council hopes half will come from the lottery fund. In 1850s, the | :23:29. | :23:34.
railway came to Blackpool and that brought all of the mill people | :23:35. | :23:39.
because they could jump on a train and get off at lap pool and they are | :23:40. | :23:43.
on holiday. This was why it is so important for us to have a history. | :23:44. | :23:47.
`` jumped on a train in their `` jumped on a train in their | :23:48. | :23:52.
hometown and get off at Blackpool. It was the only thing we could | :23:53. | :23:56.
afford. You used to pack your sandwiches, have them on the sand | :23:57. | :24:02.
with a flask. That was in! More sand than the average of! It was lovely. | :24:03. | :24:08.
It was packed and they used to dance on the pier in the morning. Dance at | :24:09. | :24:12.
the Winter Gardens and the afternoon. The council now has 18 | :24:13. | :24:19.
months to develop its plans. A lot of happy memories being | :24:20. | :24:21.
brought back. A lot of dancing by the looks of it! | :24:22. | :24:28.
Nowhere better on a nice day in Blackpool. It must have been busy | :24:29. | :24:32.
yesterday with Bank Holiday Monday, sunshine and we forecasted! You did! | :24:33. | :24:37.
The problem is that the children are off and the weather will not play | :24:38. | :24:40.
along. Towards the tail end of the week the weather will get a little | :24:41. | :24:44.
bit better for the children. Looking ahead to Friday, that is when the | :24:45. | :24:47.
weather should return. Friday and Saturday look pretty good at the | :24:48. | :24:51.
moment. You have got to get through the next couple of days. Today, we | :24:52. | :24:56.
did not get it right. We thought the weather would creep its way across | :24:57. | :25:01.
the Pennines. It has largely hit stayed away but it will hit us on | :25:02. | :25:06.
Thursday. `` it has largely stayed away. The conditions are settling | :25:07. | :25:11.
down, drying up and warming up. There is something good on the | :25:12. | :25:13.
horizon. This was the picture through the day. We thought we would | :25:14. | :25:20.
creep towards us. It stayed out of the way. It is going to make its | :25:21. | :25:25.
presence felt through the night. This is our latest radar picture. If | :25:26. | :25:29.
you watch what our computer wants to do, it is going to bring a tent | :25:30. | :25:33.
quickly. I think it will be maybe an hour or so later when you start to | :25:34. | :25:37.
see the first few signs of rain working their way through. For many | :25:38. | :25:40.
places, that is all it will be. All, damp and drizzly. You can see how | :25:41. | :25:45.
fragmented it is. For the early hours of the morning, it will start | :25:46. | :25:50.
to get its act together. It will not be pouring throughout the whole | :25:51. | :25:53.
night but at 5am, that is not a great start to the day. Temperatures | :25:54. | :25:56.
will cause you no problems throughout the night. Double figures | :25:57. | :26:04.
for towns and cities. The sun is up at 4:51am. We will not see it. It | :26:05. | :26:09.
does not look good and does not get better. It is cloudy with outbreaks | :26:10. | :26:12.
of rain and will be a heavy burst from to time. You can see how | :26:13. | :26:16.
fragmented. You will get dry spells every now and again. You will not | :26:17. | :26:22.
get out and about in it. It is just what you see. The breeze is not | :26:23. | :26:28.
terribly strong but not a great direction, north`east. It brings a | :26:29. | :26:34.
cool tool. Tomorrow I think realistically it is 13 and 14 for | :26:35. | :26:37.
the temperatures. After that, Thursday does not look wonderful. As | :26:38. | :26:42.
we look ahead, Friday and Saturday, as I said, things started to settle | :26:43. | :26:46.
down. They dry up again and warmer. Yes, we had 24 degrees last week but | :26:47. | :26:53.
most of us will settle for a team. So they spend millions on a computer | :26:54. | :26:56.
and you say you do not agree with it! | :26:57. | :27:00.
Say what you see. I did not receive the brain. | :27:01. | :27:03.
That is years of experience. It is on its way. | :27:04. | :27:07.
Head for the indoor play Barnes with the kids! | :27:08. | :27:11.
Or go out anyway with a coat of! Have a nice evening! | :27:12. | :27:14. |
