Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson ` and Annabel Tiffin. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Working as one of the region's top schools left one man with a | :00:07. | :00:18.
potentially deadly condition. Police release drink drive footage ` | :00:19. | :00:20.
as they launch We meet | :00:21. | :00:23.
the women who're breaking down I'm on osprey watching South Cumbria | :00:24. | :00:44.
in the hope that the chicks are about to be born. | :00:45. | :01:02.
A man from Liverpool who became ill working at one of the country's top | :01:03. | :01:08.
public schools says the onus will kill him. Terry developed the | :01:09. | :01:14.
illness by working as a stonemason in Lancashire. He has been talking | :01:15. | :01:17.
exclusively to ask. The school has been fined ?100,000 for failing to | :01:18. | :01:22.
protect the health and safety of employees. | :01:23. | :01:31.
Stonyhurst College, founded by Catholic priests, Jesuits and famous | :01:32. | :01:37.
`` famously prided on its high moral standards. Terry felt it let him | :01:38. | :01:45.
down badly. The college didn't do enough to protect him from the | :01:46. | :01:48.
dangerous dust that is released when you cut into sandstone. He says that | :01:49. | :01:52.
the illness he contracted by working here will kill him. | :01:53. | :01:57.
The sign that greets you as you enter the college was made by Terry. | :01:58. | :02:03.
For nearly 12 years, he maintained the school's historic buildings. In | :02:04. | :02:08.
2011, he was diagnosed with a lung disease. It was contracted through | :02:09. | :02:13.
his work here. Four months later, the college made redundant. I do | :02:14. | :02:23.
feel let down, but it's not the establishment it's the people who | :02:24. | :02:26.
work for it. I don't want to blame the Stonyhurst College as it is a | :02:27. | :02:31.
wonderful place. But the ethos that they teach is fine but is not | :02:32. | :02:38.
carried out by the hierarchy. Terry had these photographs taken of | :02:39. | :02:42.
himself at work. He wasn't `` he wasn't given adequate detection | :02:43. | :02:47.
against the dangers of working with dust. | :02:48. | :02:53.
The men working in the workshop only had one doorway, no window. There | :02:54. | :02:57.
was no means of extracting the dust. When both men were working in the | :02:58. | :03:00.
workshop, a Falk was created though that they could not each other | :03:01. | :03:04.
across the workshop. It was really bad. | :03:05. | :03:10.
Terry is 54, out of work and with the terrible illness. | :03:11. | :03:16.
It will kill me. I am more prone to lung cancer, tuberculosis, and | :03:17. | :03:22.
ammonia and kidney failure. Also, arthritis and connective tissue | :03:23. | :03:27.
damage. There was a comments by one of the consultants who said, the | :03:28. | :03:32.
only way you can be curate is with a heart and lung transplant. It can't | :03:33. | :03:39.
be curate. It can only get worse. Terry won a case of unfair dismissal | :03:40. | :03:43.
against the school last year. But he faces an uncertain future. | :03:44. | :03:52.
Stonyhurst College says it except the court ruling and indicates its | :03:53. | :03:56.
remorse in open court. Terry finds and `` remorse for the position | :03:57. | :04:03.
Terry finds himself in. A 65`year`old competitor has been | :04:04. | :04:07.
killed today at the Isle of Man TT races. He died during the race on | :04:08. | :04:13.
the third lap. He was an experienced and regular rider the first competed | :04:14. | :04:19.
in 1992. He was the first person to be killed at this year's events. | :04:20. | :04:29.
Police say an off duty doctor could hold vital information about a boxer | :04:30. | :04:32.
who was struck by a car. Vinnie Holligan was struck | :04:33. | :04:34.
on Northern Perimeter Road The driver later gave himself up and | :04:35. | :04:36.
is being questioned on suspicion of The doctor, | :04:37. | :04:41.
who'd been caring for the 19 year old, left the scene before officers | :04:42. | :04:45.
had a chance to speak to him. Police have released CCTV pictures | :04:46. | :04:49.
of a robbery at a petrol station Two men threatened staff with | :04:50. | :04:52.
an imitation firearm and made It happened on the 21st of May | :04:53. | :04:56.
on Dunham Road in Altrincham. The Labour MP for Bootle, | :04:57. | :05:02.
Joe Benton, could lose his seat ` after party members voted to open | :05:03. | :05:05.
up the selection process. They want to be able to choose | :05:06. | :05:08.
a new candidate to fight Mr Benton ` who's 80 ` | :05:09. | :05:11.
was first elected in 1990 and wants The Labour Party will meet | :05:12. | :05:16.
to discuss a way forward. 23 year old Daniel Birch from Wigan | :05:17. | :05:32.

was driving, while nearly three On display in Manchester's Albert | :05:38. | :05:41.

was driving, while nearly three The phone rang and it was the | :05:55. | :06:09.
police. My blood went cold. I knew then. This happens on mother's day. | :06:10. | :06:23.
That adds a whole new elements to it. She is very determined to get | :06:24. | :06:30.
the message out there. Its life changing for everyone. You can't | :06:31. | :06:32.
shrug it off. Last summer's crackdown saw | :06:33. | :06:36.
an estimated 252 drink drive related arrests across Greater | :06:37. | :06:38.
Manchester with 149 in Lancashire, Merseyside Police were unable | :06:39. | :06:41.
to give us any figures. It's simple to use. You get a swap, | :06:42. | :06:53.
put it in your mouth... Drug driving is also being | :06:54. | :06:58.
highlighted with Officers using this new hi tech testing equipment | :06:59. | :07:00.
for the first time. Helen Birch now spends much of her | :07:01. | :07:03.
time raising awareness of the Every time I see the car I die if a | :07:04. | :07:15.
bit inside. It kills me. But my hope is that one parent would look at | :07:16. | :07:18.
that car and imagine that it was their child. Even though he was 23, | :07:19. | :07:36.
he was still my baby. The structural engineer responsible for designing | :07:37. | :07:39.
parts of the Hillsborough stadium thought it would be ridiculous to | :07:40. | :07:42.
restrict standing access to the stadium. | :07:43. | :07:47.
Lawyers have been reading the evidence and expert gave to the Lord | :07:48. | :07:51.

Doctor eastward has been stadium. He also worked with the | :07:56. | :08:16.
committee that overgrown `` oversaw the ground's safety. He has been | :08:17. | :08:22.
giving evidence to the Lord Justice Taylor enquiry. He was asked what | :08:23. | :08:27.
his opinion was of inserting fences on the Western Terrace to create | :08:28. | :08:30.
smaller pens. He said that was fine as long as there was it `` | :08:31. | :08:35.
sufficient control to monitor how many fans were getting in. He was | :08:36. | :08:37.
asked 2014 is the centenary of the | :08:38. | :10:05.
outbreak of the First World War. We are looking at life on the home | :10:06. | :10:10.
front. Here, `` tonight we are in Cumbria. 100 years ago, they had | :10:11. | :10:14.
started to build another super weapon. | :10:15. | :10:27.
This is what is left of the forts built in 1911 to guard the | :10:28. | :10:35.
approaches to Barrow Inverness. It was the scene of one of the oddest | :10:36. | :10:40.
little German naval attacks of the First World War. A German U`boat | :10:41. | :10:46.
surfaced about a mile out there, and aims in the direction of two huge | :10:47. | :10:51.
buildings in lands. The shells missed their targets and the gunners | :10:52. | :10:55.
he drove off the radar is. But what was the boat aiming at? ``? | :10:56. | :11:04.
This is where a fitted sheet was filmed in the 20s. Shipbuilding had | :11:05. | :11:12.
started here before the war. `` this footage was filmed. | :11:13. | :11:19.
They build airships that would operate as long`range naval | :11:20. | :11:25.
reconnaissance vessel. The site is now buried under a housing estate. | :11:26. | :11:35.
It was 540 foot long and 150 feet wide. This shed could fit to | :11:36. | :11:43.
airships. There would have been a swarm of people, hundreds and | :11:44. | :11:49.
hundreds of people, building themselves. It was dark inside with | :11:50. | :11:57.
a chemical smell. Metal work going on, gasbag manufacture, all sorts of | :11:58. | :12:03.
canvas work. There would have been the views of petrol and fuel. Women | :12:04. | :12:11.
were working their act as well. That was quite skilled work for the day. | :12:12. | :12:20.
This man was nearly gassed on one airship test flight but went on to | :12:21. | :12:23.
become one of Britain's's greatest aeronautical engineers. | :12:24. | :12:29.
He really did learn his trade as an advanced engineer. That led to the | :12:30. | :12:37.
Wellington bomber, all sorts of incredible things that came from | :12:38. | :12:38.
this genius. The airships carried out valuable | :12:39. | :12:43.
work, but after the war of the military last interest in the | :12:44. | :12:48.
technology. Lack of investment led to the ships being closed in 1921. | :12:49. | :12:53.
Plans to turn them into film studios, a British Hollywood, came | :12:54. | :12:58.
to nothing. They were abolished in the late 1920s. The brief | :12:59. | :13:04.
spectacular age of the airship was over. The work carried out here has | :13:05. | :13:09.
a long and surprisingly busy. The design work on airships, the | :13:10. | :13:14.
experiments ` there was a tremendous legacy. It went into aeroplanes, | :13:15. | :13:19.
especially metal aeroplanes, and even submarines. The US Navy used a | :13:20. | :13:26.
lot of our design work even in their nuclear submarines in the 1950s. The | :13:27. | :13:32.
research and the knowledge was not wasted. | :13:33. | :13:37.
I really learned something. Fascinating stuff. And there is more | :13:38. | :13:42.
World War I tonight on BBC One. The programme is here on BBC One at | :13:43. | :14:06.
7:30pm. This forms part of the BBC's World War I At Home series. | :14:07. | :14:19.
Staff at a nature reserve in South Cumbria are on tenterhooks | :14:20. | :14:22.
in the hope of witnessing a little piece of ornithological history. | :14:23. | :14:26.
A pair of rare Ospreys have set up home at Foulshaw Moss nature reserve | :14:27. | :14:31.
` and for the first time in the reserve's history ` it looks like | :14:32. | :14:35.
The nest is under round the clock surveillance to capture any hatching | :14:36. | :14:40.
chicks on camera but also to protect the birds from egg thieves. | :14:41. | :14:43.
It's not easy to find or get to, but that's perhaps why the ospreys have | :14:44. | :14:57.
set up home here. She is sitting right in the middle | :14:58. | :15:02.
of the nest. This is what they're looking at, Osprey court on a camera | :15:03. | :15:09.
mounted near the nest. `` caught on camera. | :15:10. | :15:15.
The nest. If we do see chicks on camera, it | :15:16. | :15:19.
would be like Christmas and birthday all, once. | :15:20. | :15:24.
There is no guarantee but the experts say the female has been on | :15:25. | :15:29.
the nest for more than 30 days. Incubation for an Osprey is between | :15:30. | :15:34.
35 and 40 days. Fingers crossed that the next few days could bring some | :15:35. | :15:38.
good news. It would be very unusual for a bird | :15:39. | :15:43.
to sit on a nest for 20 days, getting onto 30 days, without there | :15:44. | :15:50.
being X underneath. I think we are very hopeful. | :15:51. | :16:01.
Ospreys are rare enough to be on the list for conservation concern. At | :16:02. | :16:04.
one time they were extinct in the UK. In 2001, a pair bred | :16:05. | :16:08.
successfully in Cumbria. Now it looks like the birds are spreading | :16:09. | :16:09.
into new areas. I think there are into new areas. I think there are | :16:10. | :16:13.
only two pairs income rear. It's fantastic to see. | :16:14. | :16:19.
It's so hard to describe. It's a fabulous feeling. Just seeing them | :16:20. | :16:27.
here is indescribable. They are such a lovely bird. | :16:28. | :16:31.
The area is under surveillance to protect eggs from thieves and | :16:32. | :16:36.
predators. There could be a raffle of tiny feathers in a few days. | :16:37. | :16:42.
Now to sport and Richard , Andrew Flintoff has been showing | :16:43. | :16:45.
he's still got it as he prepares to make his comeback for Lancashire? | :16:46. | :16:51.
Yes he turned out for one of his old club sides St Annes. | :16:52. | :16:55.
And considering he last played in anger almost five years ago, | :16:56. | :17:12.
And when you see this you'll know what I mean. | :17:13. | :17:19.
This was one of three wickets he took. | :17:20. | :17:35.
Slowed down you can see what a brilliant catch it was. | :17:36. | :18:17.
This is what it meant to the lifelong Liverpool fan to | :18:18. | :18:21.
And it left Rickie Lambert almost lost for words. | :18:22. | :18:26.
As a youngster Rickie thought his chance to turn out in Liverpool | :18:27. | :18:32.
I've been trying to let it sink in and it hasn't. I am finding it hard | :18:33. | :18:39.
to let it sink in. I can't believe it. | :18:40. | :18:41.
As a youngster Rickie thought his chance to turn out in Liverpool | :18:42. | :18:44.
He was released by the club as a 15 year old. | :18:45. | :18:48.
But working his way back via the likes of Macclesfield, | :18:49. | :18:50.
I know what is important and I know I've got to hit the ground running. | :18:51. | :19:04.
That's what we intend to do. It means everything to me, but I do | :19:05. | :19:08.
believe I can help push the score for it. | :19:09. | :19:12.
A goal every other game for Southampton has pushed him | :19:13. | :19:15.
onto the international stage and one of Liverpool's greatest | :19:16. | :19:17.
ever goalscorers says Lambert is a smart signing. | :19:18. | :19:21.
He's probably a little different to what we have already. He is a | :19:22. | :19:28.
Liverpool lad. Straightaway you are going to get that extra from him. He | :19:29. | :19:35.
will give his all. For ?5 million, I think it is a fantastic bit of | :19:36. | :19:36.
business. And as one of their own, Rickie | :19:37. | :19:37.
Lambert will do everything he can to In 100 years, very few women have | :19:38. | :20:06.
taken part in the TT races. It is often described as the | :20:07. | :20:08.
ultimate challenge between man and machine. But it is not just men who | :20:09. | :20:13.
are attracted to the danger, the thrill of the TT course. | :20:14. | :20:23.
The first ever female competitor was in the 1970s. | :20:24. | :20:36.
Thankfully, times have changed and women are welcome. Only few dare to | :20:37. | :20:43.
take part. This year, Maria is the only female solo rider. | :20:44. | :20:48.
We have had a love hate relationship because I have broken some bones. | :20:49. | :20:54.
But I love racing. It is one of the best challenges. It gives you one of | :20:55. | :20:57.
the best feelings in the world. It gives you the worst nerves in the | :20:58. | :21:03.
world. The sidecars attract only a few | :21:04. | :21:08.
more. The mechanics point to me and are | :21:09. | :21:14.
very surprised. This is why she is doing it. She | :21:15. | :21:20.
says once she is on the start line, everyone is equal. Everyone treats | :21:21. | :21:24.
me like them. You leave the talking behind. | :21:25. | :21:29.
19`year`old Hayley is the youngest ever female to take part. | :21:30. | :21:34.
IMS am care assistant at all of my clients think I'm crazy. It is so | :21:35. | :21:39.
many emotions mixed into one. I am excited, scared and nervous. I trust | :21:40. | :21:47.
my driver 1,000,000%. No woman has ever won the TT but a | :21:48. | :21:51.
handful of women will be trying this year. | :21:52. | :22:06.
Now is it case of once bitten twice shy for Manchester City? | :22:07. | :22:10.
You may recall the Blues star midfielder Yaya Toure was | :22:11. | :22:12.
so upset after the club apparently forget to get him a birthday cake | :22:13. | :22:16.
that his agent suggested a transfer away from the Etihad. | :22:17. | :22:19.
Well today it's Sergio Aguero's birthday. | :22:20. | :22:20.
Join us in wishing him a very happy 26th today. | :22:21. | :22:37.
They always say, never work with children or animals. | :22:38. | :22:44.
Pony`trekking firms in the Lake District are worried that | :22:45. | :22:46.
proposed "speed restrictions" on horses ` using off`road routes ` | :22:47. | :22:49.
Some say the National Park Authority wants to limit horses to no more | :22:50. | :22:54.
than a trot ` to protect walkers and cyclists. | :22:55. | :23:01.
We have been alarmed to find out more. Here at the Manchester Donkey | :23:02. | :23:10.
Sanctuary, they take in donkeys for whatever reason. They set them to | :23:11. | :23:17.
work, doing assisted therapy. It involves bringing in children who | :23:18. | :23:20.
may be disabled and introducing them to life on the back of a donkey. | :23:21. | :23:26.
This is Lucy. She has been coming for about a year. This is her | :23:27. | :23:35.
mother. She really enjoys coming. It is great for her physical | :23:36. | :23:40.
developments. She's not scared? No, she is really confidence. Thank you. | :23:41. | :23:48.
They couldn't do what they do here without the help of volunteers. | :23:49. | :23:54.
Volunteers like Bob. Why did you volunteer to get involved in this? | :23:55. | :23:59.
I've been doing this for about five years. Initially it was for the love | :24:00. | :24:13.
of animals. It's very fulfilling? It's very fulfilling? The volunteers | :24:14. | :24:18.
today received an accolade from the Queen. Debbie is from the donkey | :24:19. | :24:27.
sanctuary. What does this award mean to you? We are thrilled. If it | :24:28. | :24:31.
wasn't for the volunteers, we couldn't do what we do. They look | :24:32. | :24:36.
after the donkeys, help with the rights, they do absolutely | :24:37. | :24:42.
everything. Part of the awards is that you get to go to the palace for | :24:43. | :24:46.
a garden party. Though the donkeys becoming? Sadly, no. I hope they | :24:47. | :24:52.
enjoy it. No donkeys at `` on the lawn at | :24:53. | :24:58.
Buckingham Palace, but congratulations to everyone here. | :24:59. | :25:14.
It is the beginning of summer, though you wouldn't believe it if | :25:15. | :25:20.
you stepped outside this afternoon. Rain or showers, and a hint of | :25:21. | :25:25.
sunshine. Thursday is looking like the best day. Those showers | :25:26. | :25:31.
continued to push across the North West, with heavy bursts causing | :25:32. | :25:35.
problems on the road. Surface water and poor visibility. There is a lot | :25:36. | :25:39.
of cloud and patchy rain and drizzle. That cloud is low enough to | :25:40. | :25:43.
cause some problems with visibility tomorrow morning. The aware that | :25:44. | :25:48.
there could be so mist particularly across the high roads. Temperatures | :25:49. | :25:54.
around 13 or 14. Tomorrow morning. Start on a cloudy notes, and also a | :25:55. | :26:00.
damp one. Just a light breeze. Look at this, a hint of sunshine coming | :26:01. | :26:07.
in from the Irish Sea. Those skies breaking up through the afternoon, | :26:08. | :26:12.

with a few showers. On Thursday, some sunny spells. Returning to | :26:32. | :26:43.
cloudy weather and rain on Friday. Let's find out why Dave should not | :26:44. | :26:50.
