Police condemn the "atrocious cruelty" | :00:27. | :00:29.
of a couple jailed after allost starving their daughter to death. | :00:30. | :00:36.
I think that all of society will be absolutely disgusted by what has | :00:37. | :00:41.
happened. I am in the Dublin Valley whth the | :00:42. | :00:47.
National Grid has announced its plans for installing power cables. | :00:48. | :00:50.
Some people are concerned it will ruin this beautiful landscape. | :00:51. | :00:52.
We are live at the start of Lancashire?s Beatherder Festival. | :00:53. | :01:04.
Those are the words a friend used to describe Glenn Thomas today. | :01:05. | :01:10.
The Blackpool`born journalist was among those who lost their lives | :01:11. | :01:12.
on the Malaysian Airlines flight brought down over Ukraine. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Mr Thomas had been en route to Australia in his role | :01:18. | :01:20.
as media relations co`ordin`tor with the World Health Organisation. | :01:21. | :01:23.
Our chief reporter, Dave Gudst, has the story. | :01:24. | :01:28.
He was Blackpool born and bred but his work as a journalist took | :01:29. | :01:30.
I have known Glenn for over 30 years. | :01:31. | :01:38.
He was very professional about his work for the | :01:39. | :01:40.
World Health Organisation btt also personally he was a man full of | :01:41. | :01:44.
Glenn Thomas was among thosd who died as a Malaysia Airlines flight | :01:45. | :01:50.
He had been travelling to Atstralia to take part in an HIV confdrence | :01:51. | :01:55.
in his role of media relations co`ordin`tor | :01:56. | :01:59.
How did you find out what had happened? | :02:00. | :02:05.
I first got a text from his sister and from his partner | :02:06. | :02:07.
We all knew, because Glenn shared it with us on | :02:08. | :02:12.
social media, that he was on his way to an HIV conference in Australia. | :02:13. | :02:16.
His sister and his partner are very upset. | :02:17. | :02:19.
His sister has been caught on a holiday in Spain and his partner | :02:20. | :02:21.
Mr Thomas started his career on local newspapers but joined | :02:22. | :02:26.
His death has left colleaguds and friends shocked and distressed. | :02:27. | :02:35.
He was one of these people who sort of live their life and he | :02:36. | :02:38.
He was planning his 50th birthday for next lonth. | :02:39. | :02:42.
He was thinking about the friends he wanted to bring along. | :02:43. | :02:47.
We were talking about that at the weekend. | :02:48. | :02:48.
His colleagues at the World Health Organisation wdre | :02:49. | :02:50.
There was a minute's silencd in his memory before this tribute. | :02:51. | :02:58.
Glenn will be remembered for his ready laugh | :02:59. | :02:59.
He will be greatly missed by those who had the opporttnity to | :03:00. | :03:06.
And so Glenn's career took him far away from Blackpool. | :03:07. | :03:13.
But he always maintained his links with this place, not least | :03:14. | :03:18.
because his sister and some of his friends still lived here | :03:19. | :03:22.
And so it is here that his loss is being keenly felt. | :03:23. | :03:30.
Greater Manchester Police s`y parents who starved | :03:31. | :03:34.
a 10`year`old girl from Rochdale could easily have killed her. | :03:35. | :03:37.
The girl's stepfather and mother were sentenced ydsterday | :03:38. | :03:38.
We cannot name the girl for legal reasons. | :03:39. | :03:44.
Manchester Crown Court heard that the girl's stepfather would feed | :03:45. | :03:47.
Police say the girl has now been placed in a caring environmdnt. | :03:48. | :03:52.
Our reporter, Andy Gill, is here with the details on this story. | :03:53. | :03:56.
The girl's father was jailed for three years for causing her | :03:57. | :03:58.
Her mother was given a suspdnded sentence for allowing it to happen. | :03:59. | :04:19.
The court heard that when she reached hospital | :04:20. | :04:21.
the girl was suffering "gross nutritional deficiencies." | :04:22. | :04:24.
She had a distended abdomen, swollen legs and weeping sores. | :04:25. | :04:26.
She was occasionally fed raw potato peelings. | :04:27. | :04:26.
There were no clothes or possession in her room. | :04:27. | :04:29.
At hospital her mother promhsed her pudding and custard if she did not | :04:30. | :04:32.
The detective leading the enquiry says there's a real possibility | :04:33. | :04:35.
I think it is absolutely atrocious what happened, I cannot unddrstand | :04:36. | :04:40.
how a mother could allow th`t to happen to her child. | :04:41. | :04:42.
I think all of society will be absolutely disgusted | :04:43. | :04:44.
The court heard the girl sh`red a house with other children which her | :04:45. | :04:53.
The mum was often at work whth the stepfather at home. | :04:54. | :04:57.
In a police interview, the girl said, | :04:58. | :05:00.
"Mum knows Dad isn?t feeding me and the judge said to the step father it | :05:01. | :05:04.
was "no coincidence that thd girl is the one child under your care that | :05:05. | :05:09.

Her family moved her to a different school. | :05:14. | :05:15.
In 2012 they took her out of school altogether. | :05:16. | :05:19.
In January last year social workers visited the home | :05:20. | :05:27.
Last April, her mother brought her to hospital unconscious. | :05:28. | :05:30.
The Rochdale Safeguarding Children Board is now carrying out | :05:31. | :05:36.
a serious case review which is expected to report later thhs year. | :05:37. | :05:47.
14 men have now been questioned over allegations of historical sdxual | :05:48. | :05:49.
and physical abuse at a residential school in Rochdale. | :05:50. | :05:52.
Police say since they reopened their inquiries | :05:53. | :05:59.
18 men have come forward to report abuse, some of which is alldged to | :06:00. | :06:04.

The GMB union says the row hs over a number of issues including cuts | :06:10. | :06:16.

The brother of a man killed in Sri Lanka spoke today of finally | :06:56. | :06:58.
receiving justice after four men were convicted of his murder. | :06:59. | :07:02.
Khuram Shaikh, from Rochdald, was shot and stabbed on | :07:03. | :07:07.
But it was feared his killers? political connections would result | :07:08. | :07:15.
Today the men were jailed for 20 years each. | :07:16. | :07:18.
Those that killed my brother have been punished and are now | :07:19. | :07:26.
Clear anguish in Nasser Shahkh's voice outside court in the | :07:27. | :07:30.
After watching his brother's killers convicted of | :07:31. | :07:34.
Six men were charged last Ddcember following allegations they were | :07:35. | :07:37.
being shielded because of their political connections. | :07:38. | :07:41.
A day I delivered a promise to my brother. | :07:42. | :07:47.
Khuram Shaikh was a 32`year`old Red Cross worker on holiday frol his job | :07:48. | :07:50.
On Christmas Day, 2011, he stepped in to stop | :07:51. | :07:53.
He was repeatedly stabbed and then shot. | :07:54. | :07:59.
Many people in Sri Lanka sahd that we would never get justice because | :08:00. | :08:09.
this murderer, one of the mtrderers, was a local politician, verx well | :08:10. | :08:11.
connected to President Rajapaksa, the President of Sri Lanka, | :08:12. | :08:13.
Sampath Vidana`Pathirana, a member of the ruling partx in | :08:14. | :08:19.
Sri Lanka, was given a 20`ydar sentence with hard labour. | :08:20. | :08:21.
Three other men received the same sentence. | :08:22. | :08:23.
I would also like to thank the British government, who havd been | :08:24. | :08:31.
instrumental in seeking answers for our family, the Sri Lankan officials | :08:32. | :08:33.
for progressing the trial to a swift resolution, but more import`ntly to | :08:34. | :08:37.
acknowledge the bravery and defiance shown by those that | :08:38. | :08:40.
The defendants' lawyer says the men will appeal. | :08:41. | :08:48.
When we have a new opportunhty given to us to address the accounts | :08:49. | :08:51.
But Sri Lanka's top lawyer hs expected to apply to have | :08:52. | :08:59.
50`metre high pylons could be built in the Lake District to transport | :09:00. | :09:07.
new power cables from Cumbria to the National Grid. | :09:08. | :09:10.
Three routes have been conshdered, and the preferred option includes | :09:11. | :09:13.
Here's our environment correspondent, Judy Hobson. | :09:14. | :09:32.
This is thought to be Wordsworth plus favoured area. Some max not | :09:33. | :09:41.
want to see eye ones on the coastline, but they are abott to get | :09:42. | :09:45.
taller. The National Grid proposes an offshore power station. Hts | :09:46. | :09:49.
preferred option is to use dxisting power lines, but to increasd the | :09:50. | :09:56.
height of the pylons. The alternatives would be to kedp a wave | :09:57. | :10:03.
to see, or to put knew high once through the South | :10:04. | :10:11.
made any hard and fast decisions at this is a | :10:12. | :10:15.
helping the UK keeping the lights on. You have not ruled out going | :10:16. | :10:21.
through the South Lakes? We have But environmental clean`up `` | :10:22. | :10:25.
campaigners would fight that. We want to be treated fairly. We do not | :10:26. | :10:30.
want the situation that just because we are not formally part of the | :10:31. | :10:34.
national park that means th`t all of the less desirable parts of this are | :10:35. | :10:37.
just dumped on us. But others think that is too expensive and there has | :10:38. | :10:40.
to be a compromise. important that we protect the | :10:41. | :10:42.
content across our area, but that cost too much, that will money `` | :10:43. | :10:50.
that money will end up being paid for by people on their energy bills. | :10:51. | :10:54.
Some people are concerned about the hate of any new pylons. It would | :10:55. | :11:00.
wreck the countryside and I think it would affect to | :11:01. | :11:07.
spoil the natural look of the area. It would seem | :11:08. | :11:14.
down the tunnel underneath. Looking at the Ritz, | :11:15. | :11:24.

We are alive at the Independent festival that is flooding the rebel | :11:27. | :11:42.

Baldwin share the same town and Fleetwood said it was | :12:14. | :12:15.
a dream to play in a home open. It does not get much better, | :12:16. | :12:31.
tournament wise, I did not play well enough to date. That is the only | :12:32. | :12:36.
thing I can say. It was a great couple of beers and I can only thank | :12:37. | :12:41.
people for coming out to support. It is just a shame I could not play any | :12:42. | :12:46.
better. What about the man that we featured yesterday? | :12:47. | :12:53.
She started on six over, G. Plate and he's still on the green. She | :12:54. | :13:01.

been left out of Lancashire?s T 0 match against Derbyshire tonight | :13:07. | :13:09.
at Old Trafford due to injury. It would have been his first game | :13:10. | :13:11.

Really excited about being here with all the team. Really excited to get | :14:21. | :14:38.
out there. I am very ready. The whole gymnastics team seems | :14:39. | :14:46.
very hard, especially in thd last few weeks. | :14:47. | :14:48.
Meet Niamh, swimming since ` toddler. | :14:49. | :14:53.
I started when I was two and a half, three. | :14:54. | :14:56.
Now getting ready for the Commonwealth Games. | :14:57. | :15:04.
In 1990, her mum was doing the same thing at the Auckland Games. | :15:05. | :15:07.
That makes her the youngest member of Team Isle of Man. | :15:08. | :15:16.
Well, my mum and dad found out a week before | :15:17. | :15:25.
but they decided not to tell me because they thought I would blab. | :15:26. | :15:32.
Her mum might have kept that to herself, but she has passed | :15:33. | :15:33.
We took her to the learn to swim sessions, she just got stronger | :15:34. | :15:39.
The Commonwealth Games will be by far her biggest, | :15:40. | :15:43.
I will probably be sat up in the spectators gallery crying | :15:44. | :15:55.
I will be really pleased, really proud of her. | :15:56. | :16:07.
I am still working hard at school and I have picked my GCSE | :16:08. | :16:10.
options this year, so I have been trying to juggle all | :16:11. | :16:12.
It's pretty hard but I'm getting there. | :16:13. | :16:20.
Just a few weeks to go until history will be repeated and Neve whll stand | :16:21. | :16:24.
shoulder to shoulder with some of the best swimmers in the world. | :16:25. | :16:39.
That all feature on that on Monday. I am looking forward to the | :16:40. | :16:44.
Commonwealth Games. It is a really big deal for the Isle | :16:45. | :16:48.
of Man. It is a school where only one | :16:49. | :16:56.
in five of the pupils speaks English 10 years ago, | :16:57. | :16:59.

you have, the first dialogud, the first conversation. It is ilportant. | :23:57. | :24:01.
Lost on one generation but from you to another. From Bill and Bdn and | :24:02. | :24:10.
recliners to Gordon and orddrs. The debates and admits we were having | :24:11. | :24:14.
very early on about languagd, about the appropriate set of contdnt, of | :24:15. | :24:19.
register, they are all still there, they have just moved on. Here's one | :24:20. | :24:23.
day made area. `` the made darlier. Usually, we are showing paintings | :24:24. | :24:42.
and drawings and sculptures. This has all that, but also things made | :24:43. | :24:47.
of sticky back plastic and cardboard and so on. They are so prechous end | :24:48. | :24:54.
of own way. So who has clailed the title of best loved BBC character? | :24:55. | :24:59.
It was a close shave but thhs man took the top spot. Goodbye children, | :25:00. | :25:06.
goodbye. You do not remember about. , you do. | :25:07. | :25:27.
`` you do not remember that, do you? | :25:28. | :25:29.
If anything, the forecast whll is worse than we first thought. This is | :25:30. | :25:45.
what we are saying about thd weekend. It is definitely spot. | :25:46. | :25:48.
Saturday will be very wet, Sunday will be more settled. The stn will | :25:49. | :25:55.
come out every now and again. The reason I said the picture is | :25:56. | :26:00.
is because The Met office h`ve upgraded the year when we h`ve been | :26:01. | :26:08.
talking about all week to an warning. `` upgraded the yellow | :26:09. | :26:14.
warning to an amber warning. could be localised warning `` | :26:15. | :26:19.
flooding. This is wants to do over the next couple of | :26:20. | :26:27.
hours. It wants to bring in at the moment. If you're he`ding out | :26:28. | :26:38.
this evening, just look spread quickly into the mord | :26:39. | :26:49.
southern part and it people. But to watch this rdmove as | :26:50. | :26:57.
we go through the morning. some localised flooding and traffic | :26:58. | :27:05.
disruption and potentially some goes on, it starts to fragmdnt. In | :27:06. | :27:17.
many places will be tried for a few hours. I cannot tell | :27:18. | :27:28.
can see that that is not a pretty picture. We do not often get | :27:29. | :27:33.
Sunday will be better. A lot of people | :27:34. | :27:37.
boots at that festival. That may be a good idea. If you can takd their | :27:38. | :27:42.
canoe that may be better! Have a good weekend anyway, despite | :27:43. | :27:47.
the weather. Goodbye. | :27:48. | :27:49. |
