Six months on from a damning report ` Alder Hey | :00:08. | :00:10.

Six months on from a damning report the Care Quality Commission has | :01:10. | :01:19.
found that Alder Hey has issues. Since the previous report, the trust | :01:20. | :01:22.
has made significant improvements. There was also praise for accident | :01:23. | :01:28.
and emergency and staff. Our health correspondent joins us from Alder | :01:29. | :01:37.
Hey. Alder Hey Council for many families every year. For the | :01:38. | :01:43.
majority, care is good. But this is a trust which has | :01:44. | :01:46.
troubled times. In a report in February it filled in for out of | :01:47. | :01:53.
five key areas. Inspectors have been back and it is once again on the | :01:54. | :02:00.
spotlight. According to the latest inspection, there have been | :02:01. | :02:09.
improvements but the trust must do better. The most important issue we | :02:10. | :02:15.
have been facing is our shortage of nursing staff. The report highlights | :02:16. | :02:17.
particular concern around the care of children in the high dependency | :02:18. | :02:21.
unit. Safety and stabbing still fall short of the required standard. We | :02:22. | :02:28.
have appointed a new consultant who is going to lead and we have plans | :02:29. | :02:33.
in place to have a further consultants appointed by the end of | :02:34. | :02:39.
the year. But it is safe. It is just making it unsafe to excellent. Staff | :02:40. | :02:42.
shortages are still a big concern here but it is an issue the trust | :02:43. | :02:48.
says it is addressing. Currently we are interviewing for new nurses. I | :02:49. | :02:54.
think staff morale is improving. Every year we appoint new staff for | :02:55. | :03:02.
the winter period and staff are wanting to stay. The trust has been | :03:03. | :03:08.
rated as outstanding for its end of life care, accident and emergency | :03:09. | :03:12.
rated as good and staff were recognisable care a compassionate | :03:13. | :03:19.
and commitment. `` recognised for. This child was mad life has been | :03:20. | :03:29.
saved here. I could not fault it. I have never had a problem with the | :03:30. | :03:36.
staff. They seem younger days and bad days. We have received wonderful | :03:37. | :03:43.
care. Obviously there are staffing issues which you have all over the | :03:44. | :03:47.
place but this If it was not been transferred here | :03:48. | :03:54.
and the surgery and good care rebuild confidence and morale. But | :03:55. | :04:04.
trust says to improve. Speaking of rebuilding, | :04:05. | :04:13.
you can see just behind me in the new Alder Hey children's | :04:14. | :04:19.
children here. It will be turned into a park, the new hospital will | :04:20. | :04:23.
be opened in 2015. A man's been charged with murder | :04:24. | :04:24.

Race organisers say he was an experienced competitor, who had been | :05:15. | :05:17.
Salford's mayor is being asked to explain why he agreed to spend | :05:18. | :05:30.
thousands of pounds subsidising rugby matches at a time when his | :05:31. | :05:33.
Ian Stewart, Ok'd the move to underwrite match | :05:34. | :05:36.
The deal was drawn up by a senior council official, who | :05:37. | :05:40.
All this has only come to light because | :05:41. | :05:44.
Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has more and joins us now. | :05:45. | :05:52.
This is Martin Vickers ` one time Strategic Director for Customer | :05:53. | :05:54.
It was he who drew up the deal to help out | :05:55. | :05:59.
Last July the council agreed to pay the club's match day costs up to | :06:00. | :06:06.
Salford's Mayor Ian Stewart agreed the deal as did his deputy. | :06:07. | :06:13.
But no official record was made and so the deal wasn't subjected to | :06:14. | :06:16.
The details have only become public following an internal audit. | :06:17. | :06:24.
The opposition Conservative Group on the council are livid. | :06:25. | :06:32.
I am appalled. When you look at what we are having to do it with the most | :06:33. | :06:44.
abominable in our city, and they are prepared to prop up a rugby club, a | :06:45. | :06:50.
private rugby club. What would you like to see happen? I want the mayor | :06:51. | :06:56.
to come forward and admit he was wrong. | :06:57. | :06:58.
It's true Salford, in common with all councils, is supposedly | :06:59. | :07:00.
This year the council needs to save a further ?24.5 million. | :07:01. | :07:05.
So why would it want to put money into the Salford Red Devils? | :07:06. | :07:07.
they are part owners of the stadium. If the rugby club go bust, they lose | :07:08. | :07:24.
their tenant. They lose money coming in. If you look at it | :07:25. | :07:30.
picture, they are putting in money to save themselves money. | :07:31. | :07:31.
And Salford Council part owns the stadium where the Red Devils play. | :07:32. | :07:33.
But there's another feature of this story which has raised eyebrows. | :07:34. | :07:34.
Shortly after sealing the match day funding deal, Martin | :07:35. | :07:36.
He'd asked for and got voluntary redundancy. | :07:37. | :07:39.
He then got a new job ` with the Salford Red Devils. | :07:40. | :07:42.
The auditors say in future senior council staff should sign | :07:43. | :07:44.
a termination contract limiting their future employment options. | :07:45. | :07:45.
He said he hadn't been interviewed as part of the audit process | :07:46. | :07:50.
and he didn't want to comment on a report he hadn't seen. | :07:51. | :07:53.
I offered to email him a copy but he declined. | :07:54. | :07:56.
The Mayor, Ian Stewart was also unavailable. | :07:57. | :07:57.
"My actions have always been in the best interests of | :07:58. | :08:01.
Salford City Council and I will continue to do so." | :08:02. | :08:08.
A newlywed couple from Salford have been charged with public order | :08:09. | :08:15.
offences ` over a reported row with hotel security staff | :08:16. | :08:17.
Nick and Kirsty Bigland were arrested at the Hilton in Manchester | :08:18. | :08:20.
The bride and groom were held overnight at a nearby police station | :08:21. | :08:25.
They will both appear before Manchester magistrates next month. | :08:26. | :08:30.
A Blackburn based company which makes electronic cigarettes, | :08:31. | :08:32.
is challenging European law on tobacco Products. | :08:33. | :08:37.
'Totally Wicked' claims one part of the law would require companies | :08:38. | :08:43.
which make E`cigs to comply with stricter rules than | :08:44. | :08:45.

But since 2006 HMS Plymouth has been slowly rotting in a Wirral dock. | :09:01. | :09:06.
And today she set off on what looks to be her final journey For the past | :09:07. | :09:12.
few years, a group of sailors have been fighting to save her. | :09:13. | :09:14.
But so far their efforts have been unsuccessful. | :09:15. | :09:16.
Today the dock's owners Peel Ports said there was no practical | :09:17. | :09:20.

campaigners disputed this. they were not willing to pay for the | :10:26. | :10:31.

lot of support from businesses in Plymouth, and politicians. If we | :10:40. | :10:44.
obtain her, which we intend to do, then Plymouth is a viable | :10:45. | :10:48.
proposition. Newport says it costs happen only pounds to have the ship | :10:49. | :10:51.
there. They said: the campaign group says they will | :10:52. | :11:11.
continue to try to save the ship. Find out why the contents of those | :11:12. | :11:34.
bins have provoked a row. Fish, chips and peers. That | :11:35. | :11:49.
With four months still to go Christmas isn't on the minds | :11:50. | :11:52.
of many people ` but it has been occupying the thoughts of | :11:53. | :11:54.
A row has broken out over who should use a set of Christmas lights. | :11:55. | :11:59.
They were put up in Crewe last year but have now been given to | :12:00. | :12:03.
neighbouring Nantwich ` a move which promoted threats of legal action. | :12:04. | :12:05.
already we have three separate councils, two in neighbouring towns | :12:06. | :12:18.
at one set of lights. And an almighty festive fight. It has left | :12:19. | :12:27.
a very sour taste. How did it gets to this? The lights ewes last | :12:28. | :12:35.
Christmas, `` the lights were used last Christmas. Then they were given | :12:36. | :12:41.
to a neighbouring town. They threatened legal action. Has anyone | :12:42. | :12:49.
handled stolen goods here? The way the lights were removed from Croom | :12:50. | :12:59.
was unfortunate. . This is about politics. Labour, liberal, whatever, | :13:00. | :13:12.
I want the best for the residents of Croom. You think you need these | :13:13. | :13:22.
lights? Absolutely. It is a good thing that they are given to | :13:23. | :13:28.
Nantwich because they are given to Nantwich. A temporary home for these | :13:29. | :13:35.
decorations is here at Nantwich's all. You can see some of | :13:36. | :13:43.
decorations and it appears that after months | :13:44. | :13:49.
owns them and where they should be put up some goodwill has come. `` | :13:50. | :13:59.
months of Rowling. We think that we will not be needing them and | :14:00. | :14:04.
Nantwich. It seems that a touch of festive spirit has, in the end, | :14:05. | :14:14.
sparked a solution. I went to the dentist today and I did not see any | :14:15. | :14:21.
Christmas lights. I am sure they will get it sorted. For months to | :14:22. | :14:23.
go. A disappointing night for all of our | :14:24. | :14:34.
Championship teams and more misery Yes it doesn't get any better | :14:35. | :14:38.
for the Seasiders. They lost to Brentford last night | :14:39. | :14:42.
which means they've lost their It's a pretty unsettled picture | :14:43. | :14:44.

in in the last couple of weeks and And as it stands the seasiders | :14:52. | :14:54.

in the bottom four. Blackpool ` Rock bottom | :15:00. | :15:00.

to cheer with the opening goal. And it came from one | :15:26. | :15:29.
of their more familiar faces. at Bloomfield Road | :15:30. | :15:31.

manager. Not enough in the game so we had to | :15:45. | :15:59.
face reality. Again I am looking to find a solution individually and | :16:00. | :16:02.
collectively. Meanwhile ` Craig Davies blasted | :16:03. | :16:03.

Super league takes a break this weekend, with the | :17:54. | :17:56.

From the 1920s right up until the last couple of decades, cooperation | :18:14. | :18:25.

Big night up in Bacup Cricket Club tonight ` one of the great legends | :20:02. | :20:03.
