Welcome to North West Tonight with Annabel Tiffin and Roger Johnson. | :00:15. | :00:18.

How the city's new port could help guarantee a prosperous future. | :00:35. | :00:39.
Liverpool will face Champions Real Madrid in the | :00:40. | :00:43.
Champions League ` Manchester City are in a group with Bayern Munich. | :00:44. | :01:02.
He was a respected teacher at a high performing school | :01:03. | :01:14.
But ` for nearly 20 years ` Alan Morris used that image | :01:15. | :01:23.
of respectability to abuse the pupils in his care. | :01:24. | :01:26.
Today Morris ` from Hale in Greater Manchester ` | :01:27. | :01:29.
was jailed for nine years for sexually abusing ten school boys at | :01:30. | :01:30.
In a moment we'll we speaking to one of his victims. | :01:31. | :01:35.
But first, our reporter Clare Fallon is outside the college now. | :01:36. | :01:38.
Clare tell us what happened in court today. | :01:39. | :01:44.
It was described as a sustained campaign of abuse. | :01:45. | :01:55.
For more than 20 years, the name Alan Morris instilled fear | :01:56. | :01:57.
As the school's self`styled head of discipline ` the beatings he dished | :01:58. | :02:01.
They satisfied his sexual desires for schoolboys. | :02:02. | :02:09.
That moment marked the beginning of years of sexual abuse | :02:10. | :02:28.
The sexual abuse... It was the final straw. | :02:29. | :02:43.
Run by the Christian Brothers ` when corporal punishment was legal ` | :02:44. | :02:44.
Discipline enforced with leather straps, blackboard rubbers ` | :02:45. | :02:48.
But when Alan Morris hit boys it went beyond corporal punishment. | :02:49. | :02:52.
Some were were abused on a weekly basis. | :02:53. | :02:56.
Others were forced to hit each other ` while he watched. | :02:57. | :03:07.
75 people came forward. For me, that shows the confidence these people | :03:08. | :03:27.
have in the justice system. But despite | :03:28. | :03:31.
a major police investigation. He had access to thousands of boys. | :03:32. | :03:57.
I always thought sex was dirty after what he did. | :03:58. | :03:58.
And many of the victims are still living with the impact | :03:59. | :04:00.
Although many knew the truth about Alan Morris ` for decades ` | :04:01. | :04:04.
Tonight though ` he's behind bars ` starting a nine year sentence. | :04:05. | :04:11.
Questions now about how he went unpunished for so long. He was | :04:12. | :04:26.
interviewed in the past but no action was taken. Allegations were | :04:27. | :04:38.
made against two other teachers. But they died. Alan Morris's abuse was | :04:39. | :04:50.
brought to light by a former in 2012. He reported an incident | :04:51. | :04:55.
which had happened to him in visited the teacher's house for an | :04:56. | :05:02.
extra lesson. We won't go into but earlier his victim ` who asked | :05:03. | :05:09.
to remain anonymous ` told I wonder whether that has | :05:10. | :05:13.
something to do with it. I was frightened I was going | :05:14. | :05:21.
to be sexually assaulted. I never want to feel | :05:22. | :05:26.
powerless again. Why had you not gone to | :05:27. | :05:33.
the authorities before? To this day, | :05:34. | :05:39.
I feel guilty about that. Potentially, | :05:40. | :06:04.
I could have let other people down That is | :06:05. | :06:06.
a great personal embarrasment. How do you feel now ` | :06:07. | :06:15.
your actions led to this trial coming forward, and so many other | :06:16. | :06:20.
victims have now come forward? I hope I've been able to give some | :06:21. | :06:27.
of those people who hadn't had their day in court, | :06:28. | :06:32.
or had unpleasant experiences like What do you think of him now, | :06:33. | :06:35.
personally? That sounds odd, | :06:36. | :06:53.
given the things he's done. Peter Saunders is the Chief | :06:54. | :07:22.
Executive of the charity National Association for People Abused in | :07:23. | :07:27.
Childhood. They recently opened an office in Stockport ` he joins us | :07:28. | :08:03.
now live from our London newsroom. I would like to say to the man just | :08:04. | :08:23.
on, do not feel responsible. Likewise, with the other person you | :08:24. | :08:41.
spoke to. His voice echo'ed the things we hear every This programme. | :08:42. | :11:57.
Today, trading standards officers in Lancashire issued new warnings after | :11:58. | :12:04.
finding that less than a third of. Some could now face prosecution. | :12:05. | :12:13.
Across Lancashire, mosques and businesses are receiving these, | :12:14. | :12:19.
leaflets warning of the dangers of Hajj fraud. Some agents weren't each | :12:20. | :12:37.
EOL registered. Some of the paperwork wasn't clear and they were | :12:38. | :12:49.
bogus address being used. People are paying a lot of money and often | :12:50. | :13:07.
going in large family groups. Hajj takes place in October this year and | :13:08. | :13:33.
every Muslim is expected to make the pilgrimage. In Preston today, some | :13:34. | :13:49.
Muslims said that has led to problems with agents. You have got | :13:50. | :13:53.
to go by word`of`mouth, with someone who has been recommended. Around six | :13:54. | :14:00.
or seven people perform `` six 7000 people perform Hajj each year. | :14:01. | :14:10.
the company is now helping farmers take court action against the | :14:11. | :14:29.
demonstrators. These fields near Kirkham have become the battle | :14:30. | :14:45.
ground for the fight against fracking. It's here that the gas | :14:46. | :14:59.
company quadrille wants to carry out drilling. Today, the battle moved to | :15:00. | :15:08.
Manchester. The landowners have taken quadrille to court. We were | :15:09. | :15:17.
told that the farmer had willingly let his land. We didn't know that he | :15:18. | :15:23.
wouldn't have wanted us there. The farmer said that he was compulsorily | :15:24. | :15:25.
purchased. In a statement, quadrille the campaigners were joined today by | :15:26. | :16:00.
bears. How representative are you a general opinion in the area? Across | :16:01. | :16:13.
the country it went from a handful of groups three years ago, we now | :16:14. | :16:22.
have 280 groups. Used stood for election and gained 25 votes? It was | :16:23. | :16:27.
a paper candidacy. The judge will make a final decision in October. | :16:28. | :16:45.
Still to come, we take a tour around Liverpool 's new home for | :16:46. | :17:00.
super`sized ships. And the draw is made for the | :17:01. | :17:21.
revocation? This poster was put up to spread the word about a man's new | :17:22. | :17:30.
novel. When I first saw it, I thought it was a sick joke. The | :17:31. | :17:41.
poster shot this local councillor, his mother was a victim of shipment. | :17:42. | :17:49.
Unfortunately, we have had one or two things happen here which we are | :17:50. | :17:54.
trying to get over as best as we that somebody could actually produce | :17:55. | :17:59.
a book and try and promote it in manner which she did. At the bus | :18:00. | :18:08.
stop, people had mixed views. With the problems that we've had, it | :18:09. | :18:19.
is a bit insensitive. It wouldn't bother me at all really. The author | :18:20. | :18:24.
has also put up posters across Manchester. His idea was to whip up | :18:25. | :18:32.
interest, but when he realised he had put up anger, he did go round | :18:33. | :18:34.
and remove the posters. I have apologised for any offence that I | :18:35. | :18:41.
have caused. That wasn't my intention. I have gone down and pull | :18:42. | :18:50.
the posters down. This incident does illustrate how hard it is to raise | :18:51. | :18:57.
the memory of the impact of the crimes that have happened here. | :18:58. | :19:00.
Construction on Liverpool two, the deepwater container terminal is | :19:01. | :19:08.
already well underway. The port will handle the new generation of super | :19:09. | :19:17.
sized containers and recruitment is underway to find the staff to run | :19:18. | :19:21.
it. Liverpool to represent the future for the sport and its | :19:22. | :19:28.
embryonic state is clearly visible on the city skyline. | :19:29. | :19:30.
embryonic state is clearly visible on This ?300 million deepwater | :19:31. | :19:35.
terminal will drive growth in the North West. Apprentices were taken | :19:36. | :19:36.
on last year. North West. Apprentices were taken | :19:37. | :19:40.
on last I've always been interested in engineering and when an | :19:41. | :19:46.
opportunity like this arises for a career in the industry I just had to | :19:47. | :19:56.
Over the next year or so, 500 new jobs will be created. With the | :19:57. | :20:14.
potential for upto 400 500 jobs, this is a major project. This is | :20:15. | :20:27.
great place for next day delivery and service. It is hoped, the goods | :20:28. | :20:37.
currently imported through the south of England will be heading up to | :20:38. | :20:50.
Merseyside. Liverpool will be very different from the ports of | :20:51. | :21:03.
yesteryear. The project is set to be within budget. That could mean that | :21:04. | :21:13.
Liverpool two will be open for business by the end of the year. | :21:14. | :21:20.
Sport now and it's been five since Liverpool fans had a Champions | :21:21. | :21:29.
League draw to look forward wouldn't you know it Richard they'll | :21:30. | :21:35.
face the Champions, Real Madrid? Yes they'll have to take on Ronaldo | :21:36. | :21:41.
and the rest of the Galacticos. They won't be up against Barcelona | :21:42. | :21:44.
and a certain Luis Suarez which will no doubt have the powers | :21:45. | :21:46.
that be breathing a sigh of relief. We'll look at who Manchester City | :21:47. | :21:51.
have drawn in a moment but this is Group B which includes Real | :21:52. | :21:54.
along with the Swiss Champions Basel and PFC Ludogrets who won | :21:55. | :21:58.
the Bulgarian title. Could have been | :21:59. | :22:00.
a lot worse that couldn't it? I think Brendan Rodgers will | :22:01. | :22:02.
be quite happy with that. Real Madrid with Ronaldo and Bale | :22:03. | :22:11.
and Benzema will be very tough. But Basel went out in the group | :22:12. | :22:14.
stages last season and PFC Ludogrets Having said that Lady Luck | :22:15. | :22:16.
might be shining on them. But the Blues do have Bayern Munich | :22:17. | :22:32.
in their group The German champions won it two | :22:33. | :22:34.
years ago and with the likes of Arjen Robben are one | :22:35. | :22:39.
of the very top sides in Europe. City have also got CSKA Moscow, | :22:40. | :22:42.
the Russian champions But City are getting stronger each | :22:43. | :22:43.
season in the Champions League and showed in that thrilling 3`2 win | :22:44. | :22:48.
in Munich last season they can live So Manuel Pellegrini might also | :22:49. | :22:50.
be pretty content with that. Some great ties for City and | :22:51. | :22:54.
Liverpool fans to look forward to Capital One Cup has produced an all | :22:55. | :22:56.
Premier Middlesborough at Anfield. But | :22:57. | :23:19.
Bolton have the toughest tie of captain as beyond his | :23:20. | :23:23.
"wildest dreams". The striker who got his first World | :23:24. | :23:25.
Cup goal in Brazil this summer succeeds Liverpool's Steven Gerrard | :23:26. | :23:26.
who's retired The 28`year`old has led the national | :23:27. | :23:28.
side twice before , scoring 40 he's scored, and all of the things | :23:29. | :23:29.
he's already done... prepared to take responsibility and | :23:30. | :23:49.
continue to push on in his career. Manchester United's recording | :23:50. | :23:54.
breaking signing Angel Di Maria says former United star and Real Madrid | :23:55. | :23:56.
team mate Christiano Ronaldo encouraged him to ask | :23:57. | :23:59.
for the club's famous number seven shirt worn by George Best, | :24:00. | :24:01.
Eric Cantana and David Beckham. The Argentine winger joined the Reds | :24:02. | :24:04.
from Real Madrid for almost ?60 The 26`year`old says it's | :24:05. | :24:06.
a great honour to wear a shirt worn When I was in Madrid, Cristiano | :24:07. | :24:24.
Ronaldo told me how important this was. He wanted me to wheel the | :24:25. | :24:38.
number seven. `` wear. Hopefully, I can live up to it. | :24:39. | :24:46.
In Super League tonight fourth placed Warrington Wolves host | :24:47. | :24:49.
Huddersfield Giants as they try and close the four point gap | :24:50. | :24:50.
The Wolves go into the game off the back | :24:51. | :24:54.
of an impressive 48`10 win over Challenge Cup finalists Castleford. | :24:55. | :24:57.
But they'll be forced into at least one change to their starting | :24:58. | :25:00.
line`up, as half`back Chris Bridge is out with a hamstring injury. | :25:01. | :25:05.
The champions league is exciting? Brilliant. It has got to be | :25:06. | :25:17.
Liverpool's year. The temperatures will not change too | :25:18. | :25:37.
much over the next few days. Tomorrow, showers and it will also | :25:38. | :25:50.
be windy. Eventually, the sun came out as we went through the | :25:51. | :25:56.
afternoon. Most places were looking good. Settled picture. Possibly some | :25:57. | :26:13.
showers from time to time. Of course, the cloud, the rain, it is | :26:14. | :26:21.
going to be a minute late. Temperatures around 11, 14 degrees. | :26:22. | :26:31.
Tomorrow, not a brilliant start. `` going to be a mild night. The | :26:32. | :26:38.
showers will push in from time to time. You can see some breaks in the | :26:39. | :26:43.
showers. It is not a day like today. Nothing in the way of significant | :26:44. | :26:52.
sunshine. It looks like some of the showers will begin to melt together. | :26:53. | :26:55.
`` merge. It is not going to look or feel particularly good. What the | :26:56. | :27:08.
numbers are not bad. 17, 18 degrees. At the weekend, possibly some | :27:09. | :27:15.
showers, but also an awful lot of dry weather. It is a little bit bit | :27:16. | :27:25.
better... We should point out that the school involved in the abuse | :27:26. | :27:37.
story as St Ambrose College. The school next door was not involved in | :27:38. | :27:47.
any way. Here is a telephone number on the screen. Goodbye. | :27:48. | :28:14.
Go away if you don't me to speak to you like that! | :28:15. | :28:16.
Most schools exclude disruptive pupils. | :28:17. | :28:20.
I ain't putting up with this any more. | :28:21. | :28:22.
But one school takes them in and promises five GCSEs. | :28:23. | :28:28. |
