Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Annabel Tiffin

:00:00.:00:00.

a couple in their seventies are still missing 24 hours

:00:00.:00:09.

They'd been warned repeatedly that their hoarding

:00:10.:00:14.

good news and bad from the National Grid: some pylons

:00:15.:00:21.

But giant new ones will spring up in South Cumbria.

:00:22.:00:27.

This is just a disaster for the landscape of the Duddon Estuary.

:00:28.:00:33.

Alongside Hitler walks walks the present virtual

:00:34.:00:35.

dictator of Germany, Himmler.

:00:36.:00:38.

He was Hitler's right hand lan but did Northwest Soldiers catch

:00:39.:00:41.

Autumn gold - the region's changing colours taken by you.

:00:42.:01:02.

Two people are still missing after fire gutted a house

:01:03.:01:05.

It's not known whether the owners - a couple believed to be

:01:06.:01:12.

in their 60s or 70s - were in the house

:01:13.:01:14.

Merseyside Fire Service says its officers had previously

:01:15.:01:18.

warned the couple that hoarding items inside the house

:01:19.:01:21.

The fire quickly engulfed the house. A passing motorist dialled 899 after

:01:22.:01:39.

spotting smoke just after four o'clock yesterday afternoon.

:01:40.:01:43.

Firefighters were on the scdne eight minutes later. We are three doors

:01:44.:01:47.

down. We were out when the fire started. We came home on thd bus and

:01:48.:01:53.

we thought it might have bedn our place alight. We learn from somebody

:01:54.:01:59.

else on the street it wasn't. It was the house with the yellow c`r. We

:02:00.:02:04.

knew it was occupied by people who didn't go out very much. Knowing

:02:05.:02:08.

what we know of the people, it seemed quite likely that thdy were

:02:09.:02:12.

still in the house. It was very shocking. The Fire Service says it

:02:13.:02:19.

could be days before they m`naged to access the house and surgerx safely.

:02:20.:02:25.

They don't know whether the occupants of the house were inside

:02:26.:02:34.

at the time. They note they have a daughter but haven't been able to

:02:35.:02:40.

contact her. Authorities had been contacted with reports that they

:02:41.:02:43.

were holding large amounts of material at the property. Wd have

:02:44.:02:50.

struggled to gain access but we are working in unison with Mersdyside

:02:51.:02:56.

Police and a demolition company to affect access. Officers had

:02:57.:03:02.

previously visited the housd but had been unable to access. As the couple

:03:03.:03:09.

owned it, they would have h`d to obtain a warrant to coming `nd had

:03:10.:03:17.

not yet been able to do so. As a private property, we don't have the

:03:18.:03:20.

same powers but we have been and given advice to the owners. The

:03:21.:03:25.

building is now being dismantled to make it safe for fire officdrs to

:03:26.:03:32.

search for the couple. Neighbours say they fear the worst.

:03:33.:03:35.

The National Grid has agreed to spend millions burying

:03:36.:03:39.

a new power cable deep bene`th the Lake District National Park

:03:40.:03:42.

And it'll spend more than a billion constructing a tunnel under

:03:43.:03:44.

Morecambe Bay to link that cable to the national transmission system.

:03:45.:03:47.

But it still plans to use htge new pylons to carry the cable

:03:48.:03:50.

And that news has been greeted with dismay by those who believe

:03:51.:03:54.

the scheme with scar a picturesque part of South Cumbria.

:03:55.:03:57.

Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has the story.

:03:58.:03:58.

This is why the new power line is needed.

:03:59.:04:01.

It's a nuclear powered stathon which is due to be built at

:04:02.:04:04.

They will have to get the electricity generated

:04:05.:04:07.

It's a massive project and one that's proving controversial.

:04:08.:04:12.

It's just a disaster for the landscape of the Duddon Estuary.

:04:13.:04:16.

Part of the proposal involvds putting up giant pylons that run

:04:17.:04:20.

straight through the picturesque Furness penhnsula.

:04:21.:04:23.

Today, those concerned about the plan were invited to this

:04:24.:04:27.

hotel in Kendal to discuss exactly what the National Grid

:04:28.:04:30.

They discovered the company had made some changes to its original plans.

:04:31.:04:36.

For instance, they've deciddd to bury a 14-mile stretch along

:04:37.:04:38.

the western fringe of the Lake District National Park

:04:39.:04:40.

That's on top of the money they've already agreed

:04:41.:04:58.

tunnel beneath Morecambe Bax. The cost of that, ?1.2 billhon.

:04:59.:05:02.

However, they still plan to run an overgrown section

:05:03.:05:06.

About quarter of the route will be underground and out of sight.

:05:07.:05:11.

The rest of the route, we think we can replace the existing

:05:12.:05:14.

line with bigger pylons but a lot fewer of them.

:05:15.:05:16.

When he says bigger, he means they could be almost twice

:05:17.:05:21.

the size of the existing pylons in the Duddon Estuuary.

:05:22.:05:23.

50 metres high, about the shze of Nelson 's column.

:05:24.:05:26.

We would very much like to see it being buried under the

:05:27.:05:28.

Duddon Estuary because it would avoid an awful lot of problems

:05:29.:05:31.

they would have at the top of the estuary because that's

:05:32.:05:34.

where both the landscape and also internationally protected

:05:35.:05:36.

wildlife sites combine to m`ke it a very difficult area

:05:37.:05:38.

We need to push them to the final solution.

:05:39.:05:42.

Of course, National Grid wotld say it's simply not cost-effecthve

:05:43.:05:46.

But where they've gone so f`r means they could actually spend

:05:47.:05:51.

that additional money and m`ke a big difference to everyond

:05:52.:05:53.

We have to balance the environment, the landscape, people's opinions.

:05:54.:05:57.

We think we can route an ovdrhead line in a really sensitive way

:05:58.:06:07.

National Grid say they will be starting a public consultathon

:06:08.:06:11.

at the end of this week and it will run through till early January.

:06:12.:06:14.

They hope to submit a formal planning application during 201 .

:06:15.:06:16.

Their main aim is to try to get construction underway during 20 9.

:06:17.:06:20.

David Guest, BBC North West tonight. Kendall.

:06:21.:06:25.

A man's appeared in court accused of murder -

:06:26.:06:28.

after a dismembered and burned body was found in a suitcase

:06:29.:06:30.

The body of Yang Lu was discovered on October 10th in a lay-by off

:06:31.:06:43.

Ming Yang, who's from Manchdster, has been remanded in custodx,

:06:44.:06:47.

he'll appear at Nottingham Crown Court tomorrow.

:06:48.:06:49.

A man's being questioned in Merseyside after a van r`mmed

:06:50.:06:51.

into a police car and drove at an officer - before being chased

:06:52.:06:54.

Police say the incident unfolded following reports that

:06:55.:07:00.

a man in a van had approached a teenage girl.

:07:01.:07:02.

Manchester's Lord Mayor Carl Austin-Behan says he's reported

:07:03.:07:12.

a hate crime to police, after being subjected

:07:13.:07:15.

to homophobic abuse outside a Justin Bieber concert last night.

:07:16.:07:17.

Meanwhile inside the pop st`r himself stormed off stage

:07:18.:07:19.

at the Manchester arena because his fans wouldn't

:07:20.:07:21.

A coroner has heard how a m`n was beaten by Spanish police molents

:07:22.:07:44.

before his death. Luke Rhod`n was on a stag weekend in a beta. Police

:07:45.:07:50.

have said they were simply restraining him. A number of people

:07:51.:07:59.

on the weekend gave evidencd today saying that they had been drinking

:08:00.:08:06.

and hadn't had much sleep. They said that they had left Luke Rhodan to

:08:07.:08:13.

sleep it off. They went out for a second evening. Another witness in a

:08:14.:08:17.

different group at the same hotel described how later that night he

:08:18.:08:24.

heard a loud bind and saw Ltke hobbling through the lobby having

:08:25.:08:29.

apparently jumped from his balcony. He said that he appeared to be an

:08:30.:08:40.

some sort of hallucinogenic drug. Police came to restrain him. On two

:08:41.:08:50.

occasions police pressed about on against his throat, he said. He

:08:51.:08:54.

said, it was police brutality. Another witness filmed what was

:08:55.:09:03.

happening on a mobile phone. She said that the police hit hil with so

:09:04.:09:09.

much force that the bat on flew out of his hand. She also says that

:09:10.:09:17.

police threatened her if shd didn't stop filming. Spanish policd have

:09:18.:09:21.

always said that they simplx acted to restrain him. Tomorrow, we hear

:09:22.:09:26.

from the Spanish doctor who came on the scene to treat Luke. Thd inquest

:09:27.:09:28.

is expected to last until Wddnesday. Still to come on

:09:29.:09:34.

there are memorials to the len and women who fought and didd

:10:15.:10:18.

in the two great wars Of course many of our heroes lived

:10:19.:10:21.

to tell their tales from thd most But one incredible story has never

:10:22.:10:28.

been told on screen... And it involves one of the lost

:10:29.:10:36.

infamous Nazis of World War II Hitler has killed himself,

:10:37.:10:40.

along with many leading Nazhs. On May the 23rd, this extraordinary

:10:41.:10:48.

footage is taken. It shows the dead body of the most

wanted man in Europe. He's just taken a cyanide phll

after being taken prisoner two days Alongside Hitler walks the present

virtual dictator of Germany, He planned the Holocaust and ran

:10:59.:11:04.

the death camps but he was captured by five ordinary soldiers

:11:05.:11:13.

on a routine patrol. This is Chris Mannion,

:11:14.:11:23.

who stumbled on the story while researching his grand

:11:24.:11:26.

father's war exploits. Proving it has consumed him

:11:27.:11:27.

for the past three years. My grandfather's picture

:11:28.:11:30.

was on my grandmother's mantelpiece. He sadly died years

:11:31.:11:33.

and years before I was born. As a young boy, you know, mdn who go

:11:34.:11:36.

to war, you think of as heroes. There were lots of stories handed

down about a top Nazi, about him landing on D-Day

and fighting in Belgium, The story about a top Nazi was one

that other families had heard without anyone ever following it up.

:11:45.:11:53.

Until now. Chris was determined to get the full

:11:54.:11:55.

facts behind the arrest of Himmler. He knew there were four

:11:56.:11:58.

other men who were on patrol What he did know was that,

:11:59.:12:01.

in all probability, Trouble is, there's more th`n

:12:02.:12:06.

100 men on here. The first and easiest

:12:07.:12:09.

name to add to the list was Lance Sergeant William Lorris

:12:10.:12:15.

from Ludlow in Shropshire. He was the only man named

:12:16.:12:19.

:14:14.:14:17.

nobody had put it together. Absolutely amazing.

:14:18.:14:21.

And you can hear more on that incredible story

:14:22.:14:27.

on Inside Out North West, which is on BBC One

:14:28.:14:30.

The UK's largest and most sophisticated rese`rch

:14:31.:14:36.

aircraft has arrived at Manchester Airport

:14:37.:14:37.

It's been studying atmospheric pollution across the region

:14:38.:14:42.

from the Lake District to Lhverpool and all points in between.

:14:43.:14:44.

It's part of project called out of the blue and tomorrow yot can

:14:45.:14:47.

racks of instruments that mdasure different compounds and gasds and

aerosols in the atmosphere. It looks very high-tech, is it? It's very

:15:41.:15:46.

high-tech. These are cutting edge, state of the art instruments. There

:15:47.:15:50.

isn't a flying laboratory lhke this anywhere else in Europe. We have a

:15:51.:15:57.

fantastic facility that we can use to fly around and measure compounds

:15:58.:16:04.

in the air. We should be looking at some data on Wednesday? Yes, we

:16:05.:16:07.

should see some initial restlts on Wednesday. Plenty of exciting things

:16:08.:16:13.

to learn about and see on this plane. To learn a little bit more is

:16:14.:16:18.

Julia Maddock from the environmental research Council. We've brotght the

:16:19.:16:25.

aeroplane here, a state of the art world leading aeroplane to

:16:26.:16:31.

Manchester, along with 40 exhibits, so we can bring to life the science

:16:32.:16:35.

and get people hands-on with what we are doing. Anybody can come and have

:16:36.:16:42.

a look at this flying labor`tory. Absolutely. This is a uniqud

:16:43.:16:48.

opportunity. We are opening the aeroplane of two people frol across

:16:49.:16:53.

the country. They just need to register online on our webshte and

:16:54.:16:58.

they can bid for free tickets for places to come around and sde the

:16:59.:17:02.

equipment and meet the scientists. Thank you for joining us. On

:17:03.:17:07.

Wednesday we will have some results from the collection of data that's

:17:08.:17:13.

been happening today. And adroplane enthusiast 's dream. Stuart is

:17:14.:17:21.

herewith the sport. The main story is about the expression on the faces

:17:22.:17:26.

of those two men. Not as happy as they were earlier in the se`son

:17:27.:17:34.

They could do no wrong. It was going to be a Manchester to horse title

:17:35.:17:39.

race and things are not working out that way now.

:17:40.:17:43.

Yes after setting the pace at the start of the season City

:17:44.:17:46.

And things didn't get a lot better yesterday,

:17:47.:17:50.

Jose Mourinho apologies to the United fans as they lost 4-0

:17:51.:17:53.

on Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge.

:17:54.:17:54.

City at least got a point at home to Southampton but they're now

:17:55.:17:57.

five games without a win - amazingly that's Pep Guardiola's

:17:58.:18:00.

Managing in Manchester isn't proving particularly easy right now.

:18:01.:18:07.

COMMENTATOR: Mourinho's United have been blown

:18:08.:18:10.

Jose humiliated at the ground where once he could do no wrong

:18:11.:18:15.

When the mistakes are individually, it's

:18:16.:18:17.

We have to analyse, we have to think between each other

:18:18.:18:26.

Peter Barnes is one of very few footballers

:18:27.:18:32.

Which of the two clubs would you be more

:18:33.:18:37.

They bought players in the summer and I think you've got young lads

:18:38.:18:46.

coming in and done well but they, young lads need a bit more time

:18:47.:18:50.

They got to find a bit more consistency.

:18:51.:18:52.

To me, it's a big transitional period for United.

:18:53.:18:54.

United a goal down within 30 seconds as they conceded four.

:18:55.:19:00.

City at least salvaged a pohnt to stay top despite this

:19:01.:19:03.

I think it's possibly his toughest job

:19:04.:19:11.

coming to the Premier League in England.

:19:12.:19:13.

different City coming in the New Year.

:19:14.:19:18.

I think we need to pull ourselves together.

:19:19.:19:23.

They played yesterday with Chelsea,

:19:24.:19:30.

I blame only one guy, Jose Lourinho. I think, it was his choice.

:19:31.:19:42.

It's too early to panic for sure but next up

:19:43.:19:46.

for both teams is a local ddrby a match that means more than it

:19:47.:19:50.

In the weekend's other matches only goal difference is keeping

:19:51.:19:54.

Liverpool off the lead of the Premier League.

:19:55.:19:57.

The Reds needed to beat West Brom by two clear goals to top the table.

:19:58.:20:01.

Roberto Firmino's cross set up Sadio Mane for the first.

:20:02.:20:03.

Then Philipe Continho's jinking run doubled Liverpool's lead.

:20:04.:20:09.

There was last minute drama in Burnley's match against Dverton.

:20:10.:20:15.

Sam Vokes gave the Clarets a first-half lead.

:20:16.:20:17.

But Everton's new big money signing Yannick Bolasie replied

:20:18.:20:20.

Then Turf Moor erupted as Johann Berg Gudmundsson's shot

:20:21.:20:26.

was followed up by Scott Arfield for the last gasp winner.

:20:27.:20:32.

In the Football League, Preston made it seven games

:20:33.:20:35.

without defeat with a superb 1- win at promotion-chasing Norwich.

:20:36.:20:42.

Alex Baptiste headed the winner for North End

:20:43.:20:44.

Not such good news in Leagud One where all our sides lost,

:20:45.:20:50.

Oldham going down 2-0 at home to Bristol Rovers.

:20:51.:20:52.

The Latics still in the relegation zond.

:20:53.:20:56.

In league two, Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer cancelled his players'

:20:57.:20:59.

day off and it seemed to work as they hit four past Doncaster

:21:00.:21:02.

Brad Potts scored two including this unstoppable free kick.

:21:03.:21:04.

Manx motorcyclist Cal Crutchlow won his second MotoGP

:21:05.:21:06.

The win in Australia makes the Ramsey resident the first Briton

:21:07.:21:12.

to win two races in a season since Barry Sheene in 1979.

:21:13.:21:16.

And just before I go a reminder that it's Bury v Bolton in leagud one

:21:17.:21:20.

tonight at Gigg Lane, commentary on BBC Radio Manchester.

:21:21.:21:27.

I've been to see that fixture many times down the years. Bolton haven't

:21:28.:21:42.

won at Bury since 1929. Hopdfully, that might give them a chance. It's

:21:43.:21:48.

a big game. Both are flying high in League 1. Bolton looking for an

:21:49.:21:51.

immediate return to the championship. I read that Jose

:21:52.:21:57.

Mourinho now has an identic`l record to David Moyes in the first nine

:21:58.:22:04.

games. That's worse than Sttart s omen. Are they going to givd him

:22:05.:22:14.

more time? Absolutely. Therd is no suggestion that either manager is

:22:15.:22:18.

under pressure. They have btilt their future and invested hdavily on

these managers and their pl`yers. They will be given a lot more time.

It is such a tight title race, it could be any one of our north-west

:22:32.:22:37.

sides. It is not going to bd one where a runs away with it.

:22:38.:22:41.

Dianne's got the weather in a moment, but before that,

:22:42.:22:46.

just look at this stunning picture from Mark Gilligan from Cheshire.

:22:47.:22:57.

It's called Finding Gold taken at Wastwater in the Lake District

:22:58.:23:00.

It's won the Amazing Moments section at the Landscape Photographdr

The colours have been particularly vibrant this year and you'vd been

:23:03.:23:09.

sending us your pictures of the autumn across the North West,

:23:10.:23:12.

# Now the summer days are ending # Now believes are coloured greener

and gold # The summer days are ending and the

:23:35.:23:40.

nights are getting cold # From the East, the wind is blowing

:23:41.:23:46.

# Now the sky's no longer blue # Overhead the clouds are growing

:23:47.:23:51.

# Summers gone and so are you.. #. but the technology isn't pl`ying

along. Ignore what the picttres are going to be but listen to what I'm

:24:20.:24:23.

going to tell you, you will find out what the weather is going to be The

:24:24.:24:31.

pictures might not cooperatd. The weather tends to come towards us

:24:32.:24:35.

from the West which it tends to be why we have so much wet weather

:24:36.:24:40.

They will come from the East for the next few days. This was supposed to

:24:41.:24:44.

show you the fact that we h`ve high pressure. For some reason, ht has

:24:45.:24:50.

blanked itself out. High prdssure for the next 48 hours but after that

:24:51.:24:55.

the wind changes direction `nd the weather starts to come from the

:24:56.:24:59.

Irish Sea and the Atlantiqud originally. Weather fronts start to

:25:00.:25:04.

come back towards us. Pivothng from east to west and normal service will

:25:05.:25:11.

be renewed. That was my favourite picture from earlier. Absolttely

:25:12.:25:16.

glorious. Lots of beautiful shots and find weather. This evenhng and

:25:17.:25:24.

overnight, a static picture. Earlier, tiny spots of drizzle on

:25:25.:25:29.

the wind. Through the night it's all about the cloud cover. It's been

:25:30.:25:36.

really stubborn in places. That is clearing out and temperaturds will

:25:37.:25:40.

be fairly low. Something we've got to get used to. Most towns `nd

:25:41.:25:48.

cities between 5-7 degrees. Rural areas may get down to two or even

:25:49.:25:56.

lower. Looking at the touch of Frost and some fog around river v`lleys.

:25:57.:26:01.

Tomorrow will be a more consistent day done today. Tomorrow much more

:26:02.:26:08.

in the way of sunshine. Somd really good spells of sunshine. Thd whole

:26:09.:26:13.

feel of the day is going to be very nice indeed. After a chilly start

:26:14.:26:19.

through the afternoon, I wotldn t be surprised if the temperaturds get to

:26:20.:26:24.

around 12-13d. It's going to look and feel pretty good. A little more

:26:25.:26:32.

in the way of cloud cover. @ week weather front on Wednesday. A tiny

:26:33.:26:39.

spot of drizzle here and thdre. After that, more cloud cover meaning

:26:40.:26:45.

the numbers will be a littld bit higher overnight and towards the

:26:46.:26:49.

weekend. Fine for the next 48 hours, at least. Sad news that has come

:26:50.:27:02.

while we have been on air. Pete Burns the lead singer of De`d Or

:27:03.:27:10.

Alive died at the weekend of a cardiac arrest. His family say they

:27:11.:27:18.

are devastated by the loss. We will bring you more on that an hour late

:27:19.:27:20.

news at 10:30pm.
