A judge is to decide whether doctors should stop providing life support | :00:09. | :00:15.
treatment for a Merseyside police officer. | :00:16. | :00:17.
Paul Briggs has been in a coma since he was knocked off his motorbike. | :00:18. | :00:21.
His wife says it's what he would've wanted, but doctors treating him say | :00:22. | :00:24.
there is a chance his condition could improve. | :00:25. | :00:29.
Lindsey Briggs believes that the withdrawal of treatment | :00:30. | :00:34.
Paul Briggs was hit by a car as he was travelling to work | :00:35. | :00:37.
He suffered a severe brain injury and is being cared | :00:38. | :00:40.
Today's hearing was heard at the Court of Protection, | :00:41. | :00:44.
which deals with matters relating to be people unable to make | :00:45. | :00:47.
The court was told that doctors treating Mr Briggs | :00:48. | :00:52.
and an independent doctor h`ve stated that he's in a minim`lly | :00:53. | :00:55.
conscious state, whilst another independent doctor believes that | :00:56. | :01:00.
The court heard that Mrs Brhggs was distressed to learn that | :01:01. | :01:02.
without a written record of what her husband would h`ve | :01:03. | :01:04.
intended in this situation, she couldn't stop him receiving | :01:05. | :01:07.
care she believes he wouldn't have have consented to. | :01:08. | :01:09.
Doctors looking after Paul Briggs believe there's potential | :01:10. | :01:11.
Lindsey Briggs says he'll continue to fight for her husband's | :01:12. | :01:16.
A judgment is expected later this month. | :01:17. | :01:26.
Earlier Roger Johnson spoke to Lindsey Briggs's solicitor, | :01:27. | :01:29.
Mathieu Culverhouse, and asked him why she wanted her | :01:30. | :01:32.
husband's life-support machine switched off. | :01:33. | :01:35.
Well, this past year has cldarly been an extremely difficult time for | :01:36. | :01:39.
Lindsey Briggs and for Paul Briggs' family. | :01:40. | :01:42.
And they just want what is best for Paul. | :01:43. | :01:44.
Lindsey Briggs is firmly of the view that the | :01:45. | :01:46.
withdrawal of treatment is in Paul's best interests, | :01:47. | :01:48.
given his previously expressed wishes and feelings and | :01:49. | :01:51.
And that is a key point, isn't it, that you've | :01:52. | :01:55.
Because my next question was going to be, had he ever | :01:56. | :01:59.
expressed a view on a situation like this, | :02:00. | :02:01.
while he was fit and well, as to what he would | :02:02. | :02:03.
And, from what you are saying, he had. | :02:04. | :02:07.
Well, there is such a thing as a formal written advance decision, | :02:08. | :02:10.
which someone with the ment`l capacity to make decisions can enter | :02:11. | :02:13.
Unfortunately, this is not ` case where there is such an advance | :02:14. | :02:19.
But we are presenting to the court a case | :02:20. | :02:23.
that, given the expressed wishes of Paul Briggs, | :02:24. | :02:27.
wife and to others, that given his current | :02:28. | :02:31.
situation he would not want | :02:32. | :02:33.
Doctors, though, say he's in this minimally | :02:34. | :02:36.
How does a court decide which way to go in a | :02:37. | :02:40.
situation where you have soleone saying one thing and doctors saying | :02:41. | :02:43.
The gathering of evidence is ongoing, because clearly a | :02:44. | :02:48.
medical diagnosis can changd, so the court will be presented | :02:49. | :02:51.
with up-to-date evidence on the medical diagnosis. | :02:52. | :02:55.
But the court will be looking at this decision on the | :02:56. | :02:58.
basis of what is in Paul's best interests. | :02:59. | :03:00.
one can foresee, not in this case perhaps, | :03:01. | :03:04.
where a family might have | :03:05. | :03:06.
another reason for wanting to switch a machine off. | :03:07. | :03:09.
Everyone who works in these cases recognises that this | :03:10. | :03:13.
is the most important decishon a court and a judge is ever | :03:14. | :03:16.
These cases are treated extremely seriously and nond | :03:17. | :03:21.
of these decisions are taken lightly, in any way. | :03:22. | :03:26.
Thank you very much indeed for your time. | :03:27. | :03:28.
The parents of missing Blackpool teenager Charlene Downes have | :03:29. | :03:37.
criticised police for taking 13 years to release potentiallx | :03:38. | :03:41.
important CCTV images of thdir daughter on the day she dis`ppeared. | :03:42. | :03:46.
Charlene was just 14 when she was last seen in November | :03:47. | :03:49.
2003 and it's believed she was murdered. | :03:50. | :03:56.
Saturday, November 1st, 2003 - and Charlene Downes is seen walking | :03:57. | :04:00.
with her sister Rebecca on Blackpool's Bank Hey Strdet. | :04:01. | :04:04.
A few hours later she would disappear. | :04:05. | :04:09.
In the footage she's wearing the clothes | :04:10. | :04:20.
in which she disappeared, including a distinctive pair | :04:21. | :04:23.
Yet the footage has never bden seen by the public. | :04:24. | :04:29.
What I can't fathom is why this was never found in the prevhous | :04:30. | :04:33.
But at the same time I am happy they have found the | :04:34. | :04:40.
Now hopefully they could move forward and get some answers. | :04:41. | :04:44.
The first investigation into Charlene's disappearance | :04:45. | :04:46.
This man - Iyad Albattikhi was charged with her | :04:47. | :04:51.
His trial in 2008 collapsed after doubts about the reli`bility | :04:52. | :04:55.
Lancashire Police was criticised for its handling of the casd. | :04:56. | :05:00.
Charlene's parents hope this new footage will create | :05:01. | :05:03.
but believe it should have been made public sooner. | :05:04. | :05:08.
Can you understand their disappointment that it has taken 13 | :05:09. | :05:11.
I spoke with them last week about this and they were shown thd images. | :05:12. | :05:20.
And that is why we are just publishing them now. | :05:21. | :05:27.
But I completely understand they want to know what happened to their | :05:28. | :05:30.
daughter, and we are committed to do all we can to find those responsible | :05:31. | :05:36.
As time goes by, detectives accept it is harder to | :05:37. | :05:41.
A ?100,000 reward remains an offer for information | :05:42. | :05:50.
leading to a conviction or recovery of Charlene's body. | :05:51. | :06:02.
The pain is undescribable and I wouldn't wish it on anyone `t all | :06:03. | :06:08.
and if anyone, anyone has any information at all, no mattdr how | :06:09. | :06:11.
small, I would urge them to please, please come forward. | :06:12. | :06:14.
Police have arrested a 41-ydar-old man on suspicion of murder two weeks | :06:15. | :06:18.
after a mother-of-one went missing from Birkenhead. | :06:19. | :06:21.
Today police released this picture of 39-year-old Anita Stevenson taken | :06:22. | :06:24.
on Albany Road area of Rock Ferry on October 18th, | :06:25. | :06:29.
Anyone with information is urged to come forward. | :06:30. | :06:35.
The St Helens Labour MP Marhe Rimmer has been cleared of verballx | :06:36. | :06:37.
abusing a Yes campaigner on Scottish Referendum pollhng day. | :06:38. | :06:41.
But the MP is still accused of kicking Patricia McLeish | :06:42. | :06:45.
who was handing out leaflets in Glasgow in September two ye`rs ago. | :06:46. | :06:49.
Her trial at Glasgow's Sherrif Court could conclude tomorrow. | :06:50. | :06:56.
Many of you will be familiar with the sometimes daunting prospect | :06:57. | :06:59.
For those with learning disabilities, it can | :07:00. | :07:03.
Not just dealing with practical issues, but also | :07:04. | :07:07.
A new play on at the Lowry in Salford aims to change that. | :07:08. | :07:11.
Mia is performed by Mind thd Gap, the country's biggest | :07:12. | :07:13.
On stage they're the centre of attention. | :07:14. | :07:21.
Off it, these performers sax they're too often disregarded. | :07:22. | :07:25.
I know that it is real life and want people | :07:26. | :07:28.
to consider if we were in | :07:29. | :07:32.
charge would reorganise society differently. | :07:33. | :07:37.
Mia is about a learning dis`bled woman who's having a baby. | :07:38. | :07:45.
It was inspired by the experiences of the sister of one of the cast, | :07:46. | :07:49.
and deals with the whole issue of parent assessments. | :07:50. | :07:53.
There is so much going on in the parent assessment manual th`t she | :07:54. | :07:57.
And you wonder how do I even answer half of these | :07:58. | :08:03.
For Anna Gray, it's her first big job. | :08:04. | :08:10.
I just want to make the most of it for my fellow team. | :08:11. | :08:23.
The performers here say the very fact this theatre company exists | :08:24. | :08:27.
sends a powerful message - that people living with learning | :08:28. | :08:31.
disabilities shouldn't be defined by them. | :08:32. | :08:40.
Just because I have a learnhng disability doesn't mean | :08:41. | :08:43.
learning disabled people, btt to come away thinking I watched some | :08:44. | :08:55.
Mia's on at the Lowry for just two nights - | :08:56. | :09:01.
Football - Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct | :09:02. | :09:10.
for the second time in a wedk by the Football Association | :09:11. | :09:13.
following his behaviour during Manchester United's draw | :09:14. | :09:16.
He was sent to the stands bx referee Mark Clattenburg for allegedly | :09:17. | :09:21.
It follows a misconduct charge for comments he made about referee | :09:22. | :09:26.
Anthony Taylor before United's goal-less draw | :09:27. | :09:29.
In tonight's football, as you've probably just seen | :09:30. | :09:34.
on the 10:00 news, Manchester city came | :09:35. | :09:36.
in their Champions League clash at the Etihad. | :09:37. | :09:41.
In League One, Fleetwood threw away a 1-0 lead against Bristol Rovers | :09:42. | :09:45.
Fleetwood are now 10th in the League. | :09:46. | :09:50.
That's it from me, the weather is next. | :09:51. | :09:54.
The region was glorious as our pictures show. | :09:55. | :10:01.
broadly similar but between now and then, a cold night. | :10:02. | :10:09.
The only place for temperatures to go are down. | :10:10. | :10:12.
For towns and cities, between four and six for | :10:13. | :10:20.
Then we go into tomorrow and it is a very nice | :10:21. | :10:26.
It should be dry and fine all the way through. | :10:27. | :10:29.
It just takes some time first thing in the | :10:30. | :10:32.
morning for the chill to go out of the day | :10:33. | :10:34.
but if you look at the | :10:35. | :10:36.
chart there, that looks absolutely beautiful. | :10:37. | :10:38.
Like today, a little bit of patchy cloud but the breeze is | :10:39. | :10:43.
very light, about ten miles an hour for most of us, | :10:44. | :10:45.
are not wonderful, maybe nine or ten at the very best. | :10:46. | :10:49.
Enjoy tomorrow if you can, probably the best day of | :10:50. | :10:52.
the week, because as I leavd you with the outlook, | :10:53. | :10:55.
couple of days, frosty mornings before turning unsettled. Good You | :10:56. | :11:11.
know what, in | :11:12. | :11:12. |
