Our headlines tonight. more on that and any

:00:09.:00:11.

Could there be a new location for Glastonbury Festival?

:00:12.:00:15.

As the event faces criticism over traffic chaos -

:00:16.:00:17.

Michael Eavis says it may be on the move.

:00:18.:00:25.

It would be a huge loss for Somerset. If you went there forever,

:00:26.:00:30.

would it not? A West MP is so worried

:00:31.:00:32.

about the effects of social media on teenagers, he's demanding

:00:33.:00:36.

an inquiry. And the rail will become confined

:00:37.:00:44.

eventually to the west and tomorrow will be a dry day for most, details

:00:45.:00:48.

at the end of the programme. -- rain.

:00:49.:00:50.

The Glastonbury Festival could move to a new site,

:00:51.:00:53.

Founder Michael Eavis told Points West he's in serious

:00:54.:00:57.

negotiations with landowners - but won't say where it might be.

:00:58.:00:59.

It comes as Mendip Council has criticised traffic management

:01:00.:01:01.

Our Somerset Correspondent Clinton Rogers reports.

:01:02.:01:09.

Taking me on a tour of the festival site this morning, Michael Eavis

:01:10.:01:15.

gave the strongest possible hint that the days of the Pyramid Stage

:01:16.:01:18.

Mind you he's threatened to move this event before -

:01:19.:01:24.

normally at a time when he's negotiating with neighbouring land

:01:25.:01:27.

owners whose fields he needs to make the festival happen.

:01:28.:01:32.

I'll move it up towards the Midlands.

:01:33.:01:34.

with land agents to use another working farm 100 miles

:01:35.:01:38.

north of Glastonbury, though he won't say exactly.

:01:39.:01:45.

the Midlands, it wouldn't be the Glastonbury Festival any more.

:01:46.:01:50.

There is nowhere else in the world really

:01:51.:01:56.

that can produce the same show that

:01:57.:01:57.

could be 2019 he says and thereafter every five years.

:01:58.:02:14.

Now all of this comes on a day when Mendip council has issued

:02:15.:02:19.

a report criticising traffic management at

:02:20.:02:21.

A year when people were left to sleep in their

:02:22.:02:26.

stranded cars, when school buses

:02:27.:02:27.

Most of the problems were caused by torrential rain making it hard

:02:28.:02:31.

to be better contingency planning next year.

:02:32.:02:39.

In response festival organisers say they are already working to make

:02:40.:02:42.

roads on the farm better - and next year they have agreed

:02:43.:02:45.

to use the Bath and West Showground as an emergency car park should

:02:46.:02:48.

the worst happen. Clinton Rogers, BBC Points West.

:02:49.:02:55.

Well earlier I spoke to the BBC's Arts Editor Will Gompertz

:02:56.:02:58.

and asked him what he made of the plan...

:02:59.:03:02.

Well, I don't know, they have got an incredibly popular festival that

:03:03.:03:05.

sells out in nanoseconds and yet they also run a farm

:03:06.:03:08.

which is a working farm, they have to use that

:03:09.:03:10.

and when the weather is bad it gets totally trashed

:03:11.:03:13.

You either don't put the show on or you go somewhere else?

:03:14.:03:24.

It's not going to be the same though is it really?

:03:25.:03:26.

That particular festival, Glastonbury, lives at Worthy Farm,

:03:27.:03:29.

It's the home of the Eavis', Michael and his daughter, Emily,

:03:30.:03:39.

I do think they have an awful lot of experience both Michael Eavis

:03:40.:03:45.

and his daughter Emily of putting on the show.

:03:46.:03:48.

They also do know what they own and what they hold and what it means

:03:49.:03:52.

to people and they won't muck about with it in a way

:03:53.:03:55.

I don't think they are interested in that, they're interested

:03:56.:03:58.

in giving people what they want in the Glastonbury way and I assume

:03:59.:04:01.

that they've done a lot of research and given it a lot of thought

:04:02.:04:05.

and then found a site, albeit perhaps outside of Somerset

:04:06.:04:07.

A lot of these bands come to Glastonbury because Glastonbury

:04:08.:04:13.

has this image of this mystical site, this mystical festival,

:04:14.:04:15.

do you think it would lose that appeal to the people who perform?

:04:16.:04:20.

I don't know, I would hope rock and rollers are a bit more flexible

:04:21.:04:26.

and weren't so dyed in the wool establishment types that they would

:04:27.:04:28.

want to go to the same place and do the same thing.

:04:29.:04:32.

There is that thing, I performed in that field

:04:33.:04:35.

on the Pyramid Stage, where it was a great performance

:04:36.:04:37.

but if it is a different venue, get out there,

:04:38.:04:40.

What's your personal opinion, where would you like to see it?

:04:41.:04:45.

What a difficult question that is to ask me!

:04:46.:04:50.

It is not just the Pyramid Stage and the other stages, it is massive.

:04:51.:05:04.

It's somewhere that can contain the whole thing where people can

:05:05.:05:06.

wander around and feel they are part of a festival.

:05:07.:05:09.

It sort of is a ready-made village, it has all the arts and crafts

:05:10.:05:12.

and beer and food and all the rest of it and the hills.

:05:13.:05:16.

If they can deliver all that and make it feel like Glastonbury,

:05:17.:05:19.

The lorry which killed four people in Bath has been likened

:05:20.:05:30.

to a revolver with a bullet in one of its chambers.

:05:31.:05:32.

The trial of driver Phillip Potter heard his defence barrister say he'd

:05:33.:05:35.

been given a "wholly defective vehicle" and an accident

:05:36.:05:37.

He denies causing death by dangerous driving.

:05:38.:05:41.

Owner Matthew Gordon and mechanic Peter Wood deny all charges.

:05:42.:05:48.

The MP for Cheltenham is calling the bosses of social media sites

:05:49.:05:51.

to parliament for an inquiry in the New Year.

:05:52.:05:54.

Alex Chalk is worried about the effects of the digital age

:05:55.:05:56.

on the mental health of teenagers leading to stress and anxiety.

:05:57.:05:59.

We're all hooked on our devices - especially teenagers.

:06:00.:06:17.

Though even they underestimate just by how much.

:06:18.:06:19.

How many times a day do you check your phone? 30 times. About 50.

:06:20.:06:26.

A recent study suggests we check our devices

:06:27.:06:28.

Those we met at this Cheltenham school now use a giddying array

:06:29.:06:35.

of apps to keep in touch... And she's not alone...

:06:36.:06:42.

It's an addiction really and I know adults that are falling into that

:06:43.:06:57.

habit of a deep anxiety when they don't have their phone

:06:58.:07:00.

with them - or whatever - so they're constantly checking

:07:01.:07:03.

to see if they've had messages or likes.

:07:04.:07:05.

What they're looking for is validation and acceptance

:07:06.:07:06.

and that becomes addictive because they're constantly looking

:07:07.:07:08.

for that affirmation in this virtual world whereas in reality that should

:07:09.:07:11.

The Cheltenham MP Alex Chalk is particularly concerned

:07:12.:07:14.

I'm not saying that all social media is bad. I am saying that were too

:07:15.:07:19.

much is taking place and in particular, the bullying is taking

:07:20.:07:22.

place online, I knew -- think social media: is it a step up to their

:07:23.:07:24.

responsibilities. He has called for an enquiry in Parliament. They

:07:25.:07:26.

insist they already have ways of blocking abuse, Facebook said it had

:07:27.:07:29.

introduced new features and tools to help keep people safe and it had

:07:30.:07:31.

launched a parent portal this week with tips for talking to children

:07:32.:07:41.

about their use of the site and that it was governed by a clear set of

:07:42.:07:43.

guidelines for acceptable behaviour. Our devices can cope with any number

:07:44.:07:45.

of swipes likes and online gripes, of swipes likes and online gripes,

:07:46.:07:48.

one of the questions the enquiry will look that will be can we?

:07:49.:07:51.

Homelessness is a problem across the West this christmas,

:07:52.:07:53.

with people sleeping rough in many areas.

:07:54.:07:55.

Bristol has around 74 bedding down on the streets -

:07:56.:07:58.

this doubles if you include those sleeping in unsafe

:07:59.:08:00.

But today the landlord of a pub in North Somerset organised for some

:08:01.:08:04.

of Bristol's homeless to receive a bit of festive cheer.

:08:05.:08:06.

He has cooked for Tiger Woods and Princess Anne but today it is for

:08:07.:08:22.

people who really need it. Sarah has not had a Christmas dinner for eight

:08:23.:08:28.

years. It reminds me of my mum and dad, growing up. I lost my dad eight

:08:29.:08:35.

years ago to cancer and then 18 months afterwards, my mum. It is

:08:36.:08:39.

also an emotional time for Matthew, he slept in a subway last night. It

:08:40.:08:43.

is awful being homeless at Christmas, it is very hard. I'm not

:08:44.:08:52.

eligible, I have not got a local connection to Bristol. After the

:08:53.:08:57.

meal, everyone was sized up for clothes and shoes. Thank you. Those

:08:58.:09:01.

making the difference is the owner of the pub and a whole host of

:09:02.:09:05.

volunteers in a group called the Street life cafe. I have worked with

:09:06.:09:12.

people, who have been knocked down and cannot get back up. Bringing

:09:13.:09:16.

them to something like this, it makes them feel part of the

:09:17.:09:20.

community again. Thank you ever so much. The dinner is lovely. Perfect.

:09:21.:09:28.

And quite emotional. Yes. And now, this isn't just a one-off event, the

:09:29.:09:32.

pub says it will set up a Christmas dinner next year, too.

:09:33.:09:36.

I'll leave you with Ian who has the forecast.

:09:37.:09:43.

Thank you. Good evening. Over the next couple of days we will undergo

:09:44.:09:51.

a change in the weather as we lead up towards Christmas in the second

:09:52.:09:55.

half of the week, much more unsettled patter with stronger winds

:09:56.:09:59.

as well. It will be all change. Tomorrow, the winds will not be much

:10:00.:10:03.

of a feature and I am hopeful for most of you, neither will rain,

:10:04.:10:07.

because there will be a balance towards dry and relatively bright

:10:08.:10:12.

weather, certainly in the east. Out towards the west, more cloud and the

:10:13.:10:17.

chance of some patchy light rain. Plenty of bad around, particularly

:10:18.:10:21.

in Central and western areas, all about getting squeezed further to

:10:22.:10:26.

the rest, some clear spells developing out to these, lowest

:10:27.:10:29.

temperatures are about two or three degrees. Tomorrow, you will find out

:10:30.:10:33.

towards the West, still a lot of cloud for the most part, Exmoor for

:10:34.:10:37.

example, the chance of patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle and

:10:38.:10:41.

perhaps a bit of that reaching out from the south coast into

:10:42.:11:00.

The rest of the weekend, some rain around, windy, but with dry and

:11:01.:11:03.

bright spells. Heavy weather is brewing, it will

:11:04.:11:15.

not reach us just yet. It will take a good few days before the stormy

:11:16.:11:21.

weather reaches us. At the moment, it's just potential, nothing is

:11:22.:11:24.

certain, but it will be different to what we've had over the last few

:11:25.:11:29.

weeks, it's been so calm. We have a jet stream raging out of North

:11:30.:11:33.

America making a beeline for the UK. It has peaked at jet level height,

:11:34.:11:40.

blowing in excess of 200 mph, and it might whip up to max storms we are

:11:41.:11:46.

watching. Friday had coming close to northern Britain, and then

:11:47.:11:47.
