Welcome to South East Today. I'm Lynda Hardy. And I'm Rob Smith. | :00:05. | :00:11.
Tonight's top stories: A new hope for the Pfizer site: The drugs | :00:11. | :00:13.
company announce they will now be keeping 650 research scientists | :00:13. | :00:20.
working at Sandwich. She spent 11,000 on a piece of | :00:20. | :00:23.
land she now believes is worthless. A Kent woman warns others of the | :00:24. | :00:33.
:00:34. | :00:34. | ||
risks of getting involved in land bank schemes. Don't do it. Put your | :00:34. | :00:40.
money in the bank. Also in tonight's programme: An | :00:40. | :00:43.
artist's Olympic impression. Margate's Tracey Emin adds her take | :00:43. | :00:50.
to a series of posters marking the 2012 games. It is such a big event. | :00:50. | :00:54.
It doesn't really affect people who were into sport, it has to affect | :00:54. | :01:04.
people universally and culturally. Hoping for a window to success. | :01:04. | :01:07.
new scheme to dress up shops in a bid to boost trade. | :01:07. | :01:09.
And the mysterious and misunderstood seals of the South | :01:09. | :01:19.
East. A new discovery on the Goodwin Sands. | :01:19. | :01:25.
Good evening. The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is to retain an | :01:25. | :01:29.
additional 300 staff at its site in Sandwich. Last February, the | :01:29. | :01:34.
company announced it would pull off the side completely and lose 2,400 | :01:34. | :01:42.
skilled jobs. Since then, the site has been renamed it discovery prion | :01:42. | :01:48.
-- Discovery Park. In total, nearly prices many jobs as previously | :01:48. | :01:53.
thought will be retained their. Our political editor reports. These are | :01:53. | :01:57.
the kind of highly skilled scientists who have been at the | :01:57. | :02:02.
cutting edge of science here since the 1950s. Last February, the | :02:02. | :02:07.
company announced it was to Pollard of East Kent with the loss of two | :02:07. | :02:13.
dozen 400 jobs. In June, they pledged to retain 350 staff, now it | :02:13. | :02:23.
has been announced six and and 50 jobs will be saved. When we | :02:23. | :02:27.
announced the move away from the side, we were exploring other | :02:27. | :02:29.
opportunities. We ultimately decided the best option was to | :02:29. | :02:35.
retain those scientists here at Discovery Park. Today's | :02:35. | :02:38.
announcement offers some relief after a lengthy battle to soften | :02:38. | :02:43.
the blow to the south-east's economy. In August, the area became | :02:43. | :02:48.
one of 13 in the UK to be cut -- granted enterprise zone status. It | :02:48. | :02:58.
was awarded 40 million in regional growth funds. We got a grant for | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:09. | ||
unique discoveries. We want people to enjoy the enormous success that | :03:09. | :03:13.
why they have had in Sandwich. During a visit to the side, George | :03:13. | :03:17.
Osborne said that enterprise zone status would encourage new start-up | :03:17. | :03:24.
businesses and other investors. But despite the optimism, 800 rolls | :03:24. | :03:28.
have already garnered Sandwich, with a further 700 Ross to go, | :03:28. | :03:35.
which means a total of 1,500 redundancies. -- with a further 700 | :03:35. | :03:42.
to go. We have been actively working on marketing of this site, | :03:42. | :03:50.
of Discovery Park, in order to find new investors and users of the site, | :03:50. | :03:56.
to ensure that there is a successful moth the company future | :03:56. | :04:03.
here at Discovery Park. It is hoped that Pfizer's decision to retain | :04:04. | :04:09.
staff may encourage more spin-off companies to set up there as well. | :04:09. | :04:13.
Joining us now from Sandwich is the MP for Thanet South Laura Sandys - | :04:13. | :04:16.
some good news, but it is still really only a small slice of silver | :04:16. | :04:19.
lining in a huge black cloud. Some good news, but still only a small | :04:19. | :04:29.
slice of the silver lining? We have got almost 700 jobs bonfires on the | :04:29. | :04:34.
side. It is a great blow to lose so many jobs, but we are starting to | :04:34. | :04:41.
get a critical mass on the site that will actually take us to the | :04:41. | :04:45.
next stage in marketing the site and getting success. Do we know why | :04:45. | :04:52.
Pfizer have decided to do this? think they have looked at their | :04:52. | :04:56.
business model and decided that they need more support staff and | :04:56. | :05:01.
more business staff around the clinical and scientific side, that | :05:01. | :05:08.
they decided to keep on over the summer. I think it now we are in a | :05:08. | :05:12.
situation where, with 700 jobs on the side, we can start to look at | :05:12. | :05:21.
those spin out, former prize the people, look at attracting some a | :05:21. | :05:31.
small businesses. So you think would fight the spending more time | :05:31. | :05:36.
and effort there, the more likely other businesses are to move in? | :05:36. | :05:42.
Absolutely. What is important is that the smaller companies want to | :05:42. | :05:49.
be close to a big pharmaceutical company like Pfeiffer. | :05:49. | :05:52.
Inside Out have a special programme on Monday where they will be | :05:52. | :05:56.
looking at the future of the economy in east Kent after a | :05:56. | :06:02.
fighter. With interest rates at record lows, | :06:02. | :06:06.
some savers struggling to get a good return on their deposits are | :06:06. | :06:09.
taking unnecessary risks with their money by investing in a relatively | :06:09. | :06:14.
worthless but the bland. Trading standards are warning investors to | :06:14. | :06:17.
beware of what is known as land banking schemes, where plots of | :06:17. | :06:20.
land assault with the possibility of planning permission in the | :06:20. | :06:24.
future. Increasingly, that planning permission does not materialise and | :06:24. | :06:30.
investors lose out. This woman is the owner of a plot of land in | :06:30. | :06:33.
Warwickshire which she bought after being called called by a salesman. | :06:33. | :06:37.
She got it would be a good investment for her grandchildren. | :06:37. | :06:42.
That makes sense, that is a good investment. I was so proud I had | :06:42. | :06:46.
done it. The paperwork came through and I was growing. I put it away | :06:46. | :06:56.
:06:56. | :06:59. | ||
and I thought it was lovely. being paid to 11,500 for this plot | :07:00. | :07:07.
of land near Redditch. After she would do it -- receive the | :07:07. | :07:17.
paperwork, it was obvious to her that she would get planning -- that | :07:17. | :07:21.
she would not get planning permission. I thought it would be | :07:21. | :07:24.
lovely to have something to give the grandchildren when they are all | :07:24. | :07:33.
do. I felt violated, I felt like I had been stolen from. I had | :07:33. | :07:37.
discovered that the company which ultimately sold the land to Vivien | :07:37. | :07:42.
was investigated by the Insolvency Service in May this year. They | :07:42. | :07:47.
found that the company caused it customers to purchase the plots of | :07:47. | :07:52.
land at an excessive owner of -- over value, when they ought to have | :07:52. | :07:55.
known that there with little prospect of the land achieving | :07:55. | :07:58.
planning permission for residential development. As a result of this | :07:58. | :08:03.
investigation, those behind the company were disqualified as | :08:03. | :08:09.
directors. Just as you have a cold call are coming to your door to do | :08:09. | :08:13.
building work, don't trust anybody who calls for a good investment. | :08:13. | :08:17.
They don't go around writing to people or trying to get customers | :08:17. | :08:26.
in that way. The Purchaser will only use the land for farm land. | :08:26. | :08:35.
The Insolvency Service and -- estimates of that it has cost a lot | :08:35. | :08:45.
of money for those affected. In a moment: A tall order. | :08:45. | :08:47.
Campaigners commence battle to save Richborough's cooling towers from | :08:47. | :08:56.
demolition. Two people have been arrested in connection with an | :08:56. | :08:59.
elaborate bomb hoax which brought Canterbury city centre to a | :08:59. | :09:04.
standstill in August. A 41-year-old woman and a 52-year-old ban foreign | :09:04. | :09:08.
custody after police appealed for help on Crimewatch last night. One | :09:08. | :09:12.
suspicious package was found near railway line and another discovered | :09:12. | :09:17.
after a fire in a baby-changing room at Marks & Spencer. | :09:17. | :09:23.
Police are revisiting the scene of an attack in Sussex after a 15- | :09:23. | :09:27.
year-old boy was critically injured. Mohammed Bourner had been to a | :09:27. | :09:34.
beach party before he was punched in the La Warr Parade last Monday. | :09:34. | :09:39.
A man was rescued from the C 17 miles south of Eastbourne last | :09:39. | :09:45.
night. A lifeboat was called out to help search for the young man. He | :09:45. | :09:48.
needed hospital treatment after a spending half an hour in the water. | :09:49. | :09:53.
He probably would have died if his life jacket had not had a light on | :09:53. | :10:03.
:10:03. | :10:03. | ||
A new scheme in Brighton and Hove is giving small shops advice in | :10:03. | :10:08.
using attractive window displays to boost trade. They are calling it | :10:08. | :10:10.
Dressed For Success and it is backed by the local council. It | :10:10. | :10:14.
provides training for shops ahead of what they are hoping will be a | :10:14. | :10:24.
:10:24. | :10:24. | ||
The High Street was hit hard by the recession. Many shops crumbled | :10:24. | :10:32.
under the economic pressure. Even the government was seeking advice | :10:32. | :10:37.
from at retail guru Mary porters. You could have a dressing room | :10:37. | :10:41.
scene where she was getting ready... Now independent ride -- retailers | :10:41. | :10:51.
:10:51. | :10:54. | ||
are fighting back as well. Christmas is a really big time. | :10:54. | :10:59.
Windows provide a huge opportunity for retailers, not just to attract | :10:59. | :11:03.
customers but to actively drive sales and create that trust with | :11:03. | :11:08.
the brand. Really create a wow factor for customers at Christmas. | :11:08. | :11:14.
This council backed scheme is helping retailers to maximise their | :11:14. | :11:18.
window displays ahead of the Christmas season. Just to have | :11:18. | :11:22.
support and ideas from outside of your normal working day, that is | :11:22. | :11:25.
just great. The most useful was pointing out little things where we | :11:26. | :11:34.
are going wrong, signs in the window over that we didn't have, | :11:34. | :11:37.
some people like to know how much things cost before they come in. | :11:37. | :11:42.
More than 30 retailers in Britain have signed up to this scheme. | :11:42. | :11:46.
love the colour and a century in the windows. The shop has been open | :11:47. | :11:50.
only 10 weeks but its location of the main shopping strip means its | :11:50. | :11:55.
windows have to catch the eye of everyone who walks past. We made | :11:55. | :11:58.
the classic mistake appointing all our display in front of the window, | :11:58. | :12:02.
when actually, people are walking away and past a building, so we | :12:02. | :12:07.
need to ankle I despise. The retail world is constantly moving. Keeping | :12:07. | :12:14.
up with it is the difference between cashing up and closing down. | :12:14. | :12:22.
-- we need to angle it. Is this really going to help retailers? | :12:22. | :12:29.
Shop windows are there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The trick is | :12:29. | :12:34.
capturing people's attention. The British high street, the figures | :12:34. | :12:39.
aren't looking good. Bacon shops have doubled in numbers in the last | :12:39. | :12:46.
two years. -- vacant shops. The trick will be measured in profit. | :12:46. | :12:51.
Thank you. Drugs company Pfizer have announced they will be keeping | :12:51. | :12:56.
an additional 300 jobs open at their site in Sandwich. It means in | :12:56. | :12:58.
total the pharmaceutical giant will keep 650 scientists at the | :12:58. | :13:02.
Discovery Park. The government granted the site Enterprise Zone | :13:02. | :13:04.
status after the company announced they were pulling out completely | :13:04. | :13:10.
last February. Also in tonight's programme, very | :13:10. | :13:16.
high stakes indeed. A Kent's man Vegas poker gamble, with a minimum | :13:16. | :13:21.
prize of nearly 200,000. And we have had some heavy, blustery | :13:21. | :13:30.
showers today. Will it be dry for You might not think a group of | :13:30. | :13:33.
giant concrete chimneys would excite a great deal of love, but a | :13:33. | :13:37.
group of people in East Kent have vowed to fight plans to demolish | :13:37. | :13:41.
the towers at Richborough Power Station. Locals have described them | :13:41. | :13:46.
as a landmark in the area and a monument to 1960s industry. On the | :13:46. | :13:55.
east coast of Kent near Sandwich, they've been out of use since 1996. | :13:55. | :13:58.
Now managers of the site want to demolish them to make way for a | :13:58. | :14:00.
green energy park. Our environment correspondent, Yvette Austin, has | :14:00. | :14:06.
tonight's special report. It has been part of the landscape | :14:06. | :14:15.
for 50 years. For local photographer, Annie, it is a | :14:15. | :14:19.
passion. The wonderful thing about the powers is that they move. When | :14:19. | :14:23.
you think they are on your left, you go down in the car, and | :14:23. | :14:29.
suddenly, they are on your right. They change were the weather. They | :14:29. | :14:36.
become at mysterious in the autumn. They are fantastic. Richborough | :14:36. | :14:43.
Power Station opened in 1962, and for the next 40 years, boiled oil | :14:43. | :14:53.
:14:53. | :14:53. | ||
and coal. Much of the Power Station has been reduced to a shelf. Some | :14:53. | :14:59.
say, they are a monument -- monument to 1960s industry, others | :14:59. | :15:06.
argue they are an eyesore. powers are beautiful objects in | :15:06. | :15:12.
their own right. They are sublime. They help people to navigate. | :15:12. | :15:17.
People feel like they are coming home. It will be nice to see them | :15:17. | :15:23.
go. They are a bit of a blot on the landscape. It would be fun watching | :15:23. | :15:29.
them come down. The last major demolition of such a | :15:29. | :15:39.
:15:39. | :15:43. | ||
construction happened near Sheffield in 2008. A similar | :15:43. | :15:46.
spectacle is planned for Richborough to make way for green | :15:46. | :15:51.
energy park, turning waste into heat for local homes and businesses, | :15:51. | :15:57.
and PoW for the National Grid. don't have any historical | :15:57. | :16:02.
significance. They are structurally unsound. We are also tried to | :16:02. | :16:05.
create jobs for the area, so bringing them down brings the side | :16:06. | :16:10.
back into use, and hopefully, we will be able to put something else | :16:10. | :16:14.
that becomes a monument for the future. A public consultation has | :16:14. | :16:24.
:16:24. | :16:32. | ||
just closed. It is well up to local councillors to decide their fate. | :16:32. | :16:35.
They are perhaps the least understood of Britain's seal | :16:35. | :16:37.
populations, and now, the mysterious seals of the South East | :16:37. | :16:40.
coast have been investigated. In the return of Autumnwatch to BBC | :16:40. | :16:42.
Two, wildlife cameraman Richard Taylor-Jones took a helicopter to | :16:42. | :16:50.
the Goodwin Sands in the Channel to put the seals under the spotlight. | :16:50. | :16:54.
Over 1,000 ships and more lives have been lost here. Offshore | :16:55. | :17:00.
sandbanks stretching 12 miles. The pressure is on, but as the tide | :17:00. | :17:06.
comes in, it is desolate desert island which turns to quicksand, | :17:06. | :17:14.
been engulfed by the sea. I found at our first seals, look! | :17:14. | :17:20.
They are just down here, by the serve. These are grey seals. There | :17:20. | :17:25.
is no doubt about it. They have parallel nostrils running down | :17:25. | :17:33.
their nose. It is an absolute giveaway. | :17:33. | :17:38.
It looks like a group of males with their long, white noses and dainty | :17:38. | :17:48.
looking females. But, there is something that doesn't add up. The | :17:48. | :17:53.
seals just can't be breeding here. This is the tidal sand bank, and | :17:53. | :18:03.
every few hours it is covered by water. They would be washed away. | :18:03. | :18:09.
The helicopter is returning. One of the very few local people looking | :18:09. | :18:15.
at these animals is this man. think these are non breeding | :18:15. | :18:20.
populations. They are trying out their interactions. So this is like | :18:20. | :18:27.
a youth club? I think it is! I was expecting to see some common seals | :18:27. | :18:32.
out here, but they don't seem to be any at all. Common seals have not | :18:32. | :18:37.
actually been a very common. Finding that the grey seals has | :18:37. | :18:42.
been a revelation. However, I have had a tip-off about more seals on | :18:42. | :18:46.
the mainland, and that is where I am headed. | :18:46. | :18:49.
To find out the answer, you'll need to catch up with Autumnwatch | :18:49. | :18:57.
tonight at 8:30pm on BBC Two. The official Olympic posters were | :18:57. | :19:03.
unveiled today, among them, a design by Tracey Emin. She says her | :19:03. | :19:09.
work will not make you think about sport immediately, but symbolise | :19:09. | :19:16.
"freedom and strength". On the one side, the new Olympic | :19:16. | :19:20.
poster designed by some of our top artists come on the other, press | :19:20. | :19:29.
and public. I like the circles. doesn't look very sporty to make, | :19:29. | :19:37.
that one. Each one a, an individual take on those iconic posters of | :19:37. | :19:44.
past Olympic Games. Many critical eyes were focused on what Tracey | :19:44. | :19:49.
Emin would offer to the party. has to affect people universally | :19:49. | :19:55.
and culturally, not just people into sport. I thought put in a | :19:55. | :20:01.
cultural love letters would be good. She designed her poster for the | :20:01. | :20:08.
Paralympics. She says she is a big supporter of both culture and sport, | :20:08. | :20:14.
at least in the armchair. I watch a lot of the track events, I love the | :20:14. | :20:19.
marathons, and I watch a lot of Paralympics, especially the | :20:19. | :20:26.
swimming. I like to watch it at home, on the TV. I have got some | :20:26. | :20:32.
tickets. From the comfort of her chair, perhaps, she may have the | :20:32. | :20:41.
satisfaction of thinking her art has drawn crowds to the real thing. | :20:41. | :20:45.
Lots of opinions I am sure will be Brighton will have to wait until | :20:45. | :20:49.
Sunday to try and end their ten- match run without a win but all the | :20:49. | :20:51.
other top teams are in action tomorrow. Charlton and Crawley and | :20:51. | :20:55.
both enjoying a rich vein of form but Gillingham could do with a win. | :20:55. | :20:58.
Our sports reporter, Neil Bell, joins us from Chatham, and Neil, | :20:58. | :21:05.
the Gills will run into a former player tomorrow? Yes, they do. The | :21:05. | :21:15.
:21:15. | :21:16. | ||
player in question is Adebeyo Akinfenwa. He did a decent job up | :21:16. | :21:19.
front for the Gills last season before returning to Northampton, | :21:19. | :21:21.
and he will fancy his chances tomorrow at the Priestfield Stadium | :21:21. | :21:24.
against a Gills defence that has managed just one clean sheet in | :21:24. | :21:30.
their last 12 games. We have got to be harder to black. That is the | :21:30. | :21:35.
whole team. We have got to do better. That is something, if we | :21:35. | :21:42.
can get a better, then that can only help us get more results. | :21:42. | :21:44.

list of people, and that has proved to be the case. The next challenge | :22:48. | :22:53.
will be how we run a process with people all around the world that is | :22:53. | :23:00.
fair and gets a to the right person. But I am excited. | :23:00. | :23:03.

feeling? Very excited. I am in Las Vegas and walking through all the | :24:08. | :24:13.

Absolutely. We are down to the final nine now. The worst I can do | :24:18. | :24:26.
is a ninth. I will be pretty happy with the experience, whatever | :24:26. | :24:30.
happens. You have only been playing for just over a year. How did you | :24:30. | :24:37.
get into it? I had been playing for over a year professionally. I have | :24:37. | :24:41.
been playing since university, and it helped to fund some of my | :24:41. | :24:47.
studies. I really enjoyed the game, and build my way up. When I | :24:47. | :24:52.
graduated, I was able to turn professional. We wish to the best | :24:52. | :25:00.

and a mild picture as well. Temperatures staying in double | :26:17. | :26:23.

into Saturday, we have got there is heavy rain that gross breading | :26:28. | :26:33.
north-westwards. The winds will be swinging towards a north direction. | :26:33. | :26:38.
Temperatures a little bit down on today, ranging between top-five | :26:38. | :26:43.
