on the BBC News Channel, and I'll be back with the late news at ten. Now | :00:00. | 3:59:59
on BBC One, the news where you are. Good evening. | :00:00. | :00:18.
The MP for Dartford has welcomed at plans to build a garden city in | :00:19. | :00:23.
Ebbsfleet. George Osborne has announced 150,000 plans will be | :00:24. | :00:28.
built on homes earmarked for more than a decade. | :00:29. | :00:33.
This is Ebbsfleet Valley and eastern quarry, where the government want to | :00:34. | :00:37.
build the UK's first garden city for 100 years. There is the land | :00:38. | :00:51.
available, there is fantastic infrastructure, a high-speed line, | :00:52. | :00:54.
it is on the river. It is in the south-east of England, where a lot | :00:55. | :00:57.
of housing pressure has been. And, crucially, you have got local | :00:58. | :01:00.
communities and local MPs who support the idea. But not everything | :01:01. | :01:03.
is rosy in the garden city plan Despite planning permission, no | :01:04. | :01:05.
homes have been built. The government tried incentive schemes | :01:06. | :01:08.
to get them built by last Christmas, but without any progress. What is | :01:09. | :01:11.
different this time is there is going to be anything up to ?200 | :01:12. | :01:14.
billion of investment in the area on infrastructure, which will give | :01:15. | :01:16.
families the assurance that they need when they are buying a new home | :01:17. | :01:20.
that there will be extra school places, there will be medical | :01:21. | :01:23.
provision, there will be the transport links people need when | :01:24. | :01:29.
buying a home. Politicians hope it will build on the benefit of | :01:30. | :01:32.
high-speed rail, the potential of the planned theme park at | :01:33. | :01:34.
Swanscombe, and the goodwill of local people. I think Ebbsfleet | :01:35. | :01:37.
needs something like that. Apart from that it has been a hole in the | :01:38. | :01:41.
ground, a quarry for ages. People need homes, and at the same time, | :01:42. | :01:45.
there is a lot of congestion in that area. I think it is a fantastic | :01:46. | :01:48.
idea, especially for those trying to get on the property ladder. The | :01:49. | :01:52.
government planned to create a development corporation to see | :01:53. | :01:54.
through the project, believing Ebbsfleet will be a catalyst to | :01:55. | :01:56.
other development projects in the south-east. | :01:57. | :02:06.
We can cross to Ebbsfleet. Will the plans become a reality? Big | :02:07. | :02:12.
question. Two things will help. The creation of the development | :02:13. | :02:16.
corporation will bring everyone under one roof and also, the | :02:17. | :02:22.
encouragement to buy new homes. The problem is persuading developers to | :02:23. | :02:26.
build houses. The government want them to boost the economy. The | :02:27. | :02:29.
developers do not want to build until the economy is back on its | :02:30. | :02:32.
feet and they can make a healthy profit. It is about squaring the | :02:33. | :02:37.
circle and encouraging people to build, especially the 6000 but could | :02:38. | :02:42.
be built here in Ebbsfleet. A former Home Office Minister has | :02:43. | :02:46.
called for the controversial March For England to be banned from | :02:47. | :02:52.
writing next month. The organisers say they are an English pressure | :02:53. | :02:58.
group. It usually attracts counter protests and last year 19 people | :02:59. | :03:01.
were arrested. Businesses want it moved away from the seafront but | :03:02. | :03:06.
some say it should not take place at all. It is bad for business and not | :03:07. | :03:09.
good for the reputation of the city. Although I believe in protecting | :03:10. | :03:16.
people, it does not give voice to much of significance. | :03:17. | :03:19.
Britain's youngest competitor in the games, Millie Knight, has missed out | :03:20. | :03:24.
on a medal place in Sochi. The 15-year-old from Canterbury competed | :03:25. | :03:27.
in the super-G and came in fifth place. Kelly Gallagher and her | :03:28. | :03:32.
guide, Charlotte Evans, crash died during their first run at the giant | :03:33. | :03:37.
slalom. -- crashed out. All four of our league teams were in | :03:38. | :03:41.
action. There was a disappointing time for the new manager. At Bolton | :03:42. | :03:49.
this weekend, Brighton continued to strive for a chance to reach the | :03:50. | :03:55.
play-offs. There was a goal in the first half. The only one to reach | :03:56. | :04:05.
its title was offside. Brighton are within a point of a play-off spot, | :04:06. | :04:09.
but could automatic promotion be in their sights? The boss at Charlton | :04:10. | :04:16.
might have been hoping for a more decisive start to his new job. The | :04:17. | :04:20.
trip to Millwall resulted in a couple of chances but no goals. Goal | :04:21. | :04:24.
difference means they have moved off the bottom of the championship. You | :04:25. | :04:29.
have to think it is maybe only one point at the moment, plus another, | :04:30. | :04:34.
but two points, and then three, it can make the difference. In League | :04:35. | :04:38.
One, gelling's visit to Bradford started badly with an early goal for | :04:39. | :04:42.
the home side. Despite struggling through the first half, after the | :04:43. | :04:46.
break they managed to score and were happy to come away with a point | :04:47. | :04:51.
Crawley Town is my chances in the play-offs may be slim but Mike | :04:52. | :04:56.
Jones's goal against Colchester means the hopes are still alive | :04:57. | :05:03.
It has been another beautiful day but the weather will not last. Here | :05:04. | :05:05.
is the forecast. It has been glorious across the | :05:06. | :05:13.
south-east. It has been a glorious weekend with lots of blue sky and | :05:14. | :05:17.
sunshine. It remains dry overnight. We will notice an increase of cloud. | :05:18. | :05:22.
Broken cloud as we head through Most of us will get some brighter | :05:23. | :05:29.
spells. The wind brighter tomorrow. The afternoon we should see breaks | :05:30. | :05:33.
in the cloud, so Sunny spells with the temperature up to around 13 | :05:34. | :05:37.
Celsius. A little cooler than we had today. Through next week, we are | :05:38. | :05:43.
chasing the around. It is windy as we head through. There will be some | :05:44. | :05:48.
breaks, so sunny spells into Thursday. That is where it turns | :05:49. | :05:52.
more unsettled. It is possible we will see some rain. | :05:53. | :05:56.
We will be back with another update after the national news at ten | :05:57. | :05:58.
Good evening. Apologies for sounding Southeast centric, but it is | :05:59. | :06:13.
difficult when London had a high of 20 this afternoon, 68 Fahrenheit. | :06:14. | :06:17.
Lovely sunshine across England, Wales and eastern | :06:18. | :06:18. |
