Good evening. More than ?21,000 has been donated to charity in lemory of

a Kent cyclist who was killdd by a hit`and`run driver while dohng a

24`hour fundraising challenge. 38`year`old Christian Smith, from

Boughton Aluph, near Ashford, died on the Old Thanet Way in

Chesterfield, near Whitstable, yesterday morning. Lucinda @dam

reports. Christian Smith was aiming to raise

?1000 for the charity Mind, having suffered a period of poor mdntal

health himself. Today, hundreds of strangers have been donating money

every few minutes, raising lany thousands in his memory. Online

tributes said" : Christian set off at 9am on Friday

to cycle 248 miles around Kdnt and Sussex in just 24 hours. But it was

here at four o'clock in the morning on Saturday that he was hit by the

car and died at the side of the road. The father of three ndw it was

going to be a gruelling challenge. In his last update on his wdb page,

he said: an 18`year`old woman from Hdrne Bay

arrested on suspicion of drink`driving and causing ddath by

dangerous driving has been bailed until the 26th of July. It hs being

classed as a hit`and`run incident at this time. One vehicle faildd to

anyone saw the blue Peugeot being driven in the area on that night.

Tonight, as donations continue to pour in, the charity Mind s`id they

were shocked and saddened bx Christian's death and were sending

condolences and support to his family.

5000 runners took to the streets of Hastings this morning for the town's

half marathon. It was the 30th anniversary of the race, whhch

attracts a wide range of colpetitors and is regularly voted one of the

most popular in the UK, with many runners returning year after year.

All the 16 people who have done every single race have come back and

taken part this year. They have run all 30 races. But there are a lot of

stories like this from people who have come back to Hastings or

regular runners or new runndrs, and I hope they carry on enjoying

themselves like everyone yot can see here is doing now.
