Good evening. It's been revealed that an NHS Trust

in Kent doubled its spending on hospital agency staff last xear

paying ?2.8 million in fees. Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS

Trust paid one nurse ?1,800 for a single shift on the August Bank

holiday. Nicola Haseler reports A staff in West Kent are now

treating one patient every four minutes. To maintain safe staffing

member `` levels the NHS Trtst says it has to rely on agency nurses At

just under ?3 million recent figures show the charges are signifhcantly

higher than for any other Kdnt house trust. This is something th`t we

have been saying for several years is going to be the result of failing

to recruit enough staff, of having recruitment freezes, of layhng

nurses off and also, what I have two say in the NHS is really poor

planning. The NHS Trust havd admitted that agency charges are too

high. They say there have bden no staff job cuts it always trx to get

their own staff to work overtime in the first instance. They sax it is

difficult to plan for the unexpected spikes in demand in A Thd money

should be spent on employing nurses all of the time, not just agency

nurses. I would rather have someone on there at ?1800 for the shift so

that if my kids going it is fully staffed. The NHS Trust says it is

actively recruiting more permanent staff.

There's just a few hours left to buy a stake in Hastings Pier. The

charity behind the restorathon of the fire damaged structure says its

now surpassed it target of selling ?500,000 worth of shares. The money

will be used to help pay for visitor attractions on the pier.

The first official public exhibition of plans for the expansion of

Gatwick Airport have gone on display in Crawley today. Three opthons for

a second runway have gone ott to public consultation, all of which

would involve the removal of a piece of the area's history.

jobs and prosperity to Crawley which would be nice. Gatwick assures that

there will be advice on relocating the Church of the second runway gets

the go`ahead and there will be no decision until next year.

Football, and Eastbourne Unhted have missed out on the chance of playing

at Wembley after they were defeated in the FA Vase semifinal ag`inst

Sholing. United had managed to hold them to a draw in the first leg but

went down 4`2 at home in thd second this afternoon.

Elsewhere in the Championshhp, a 0`0 draw for Brighton at Barnsldy while

Charlton's Championship survival hopes took a blow with a 1`0 loss at

home to Reading. In League One, a fifth successive defeat for Crawley,

beaten 2`1 at home by Crewe while Gillingham also lost 4`3 to at home

A bit of hill fog and some westerly wind. It will strengthen during the

night. Temperatures not trapping out of double figures and it will be a

mild start to the day. Tomorrow the rain will be on and off through the

day. Outbreaks of rain conthnuing and it will be breezy. The rain is

mostly light and patchy with the odd heavy burst at times which continues

for much of the rest of the day Temperatures only up to 13 or 1

degrees. It stays quite unsdttled as we head into Monday. A ridgd of high

pressure will give us something better for the middle part of the

week and it looks fine and dry from Tuesday and Wednesday onwards.

Celsius today in parts of East Anglia but it was the bright spot in

an otherwise cloudy day and it is the cloud that will dominate

tonight, bringing splashes of rain and dryer moments as well

particularly in the north-east of Scotland but heavy bursts can't be
