We exclusively reveal how a businessman involved with

:00:00.:00:15.

the bid to buy Manston Airport attempted to mislead the High Court

With the airport set for closure tomorrow,

Racist and heading in a terrifying direction ` UKIPs

former youth leader, from Kent, quits over its immigration campaign,

:00:26.:00:28.

The racism is starting to show a bit and she doesn't want to be

associated with their comments any more.

:01:03.:01:16.

BBC South East can exclusively reveal that one

:01:17.:01:19.

of the businessmen involved in putting together the latest bid

:01:20.:01:22.

for Manston Airport attempted to mislead a High Court judge over

:01:23.:01:25.

The revelation comes as that eleventh hour bid has been

:01:26.:01:31.

Sanjeev Joshi introduced the American investment company

:01:32.:01:36.

Riveroak to Manston's owner Ann Gloag, and was present

:01:37.:01:40.

Ann Gloag's team has repeatedly said they have not received

:01:41.:01:46.

Our Business Correspondent Mark Norman reports.

:01:47.:01:57.

Despite the protests, less than 24`hours,

:01:58.:02:01.

Manston Airport will close. It has created a row between

:02:02.:02:04.

residents and politicians who want to keep it open, businessman who

:02:05.:02:07.

wants to buy it and the owners who have rejected every offer so far.

:02:08.:02:11.

A recent press release from the owners say some

:02:12.:02:14.

of those associated with the most recent offer had approached

:02:15.:02:16.

the shareholders previously and have consistently failed to

:02:17.:02:25.

Now this programme can reveal one of the people involved

:02:26.:02:29.

in putting together the latest bid was heavily criticised in the

:02:30.:02:32.

High Court in London last year. Sanjeev Joshi appeared in court

:02:33.:02:34.

in February 2013. His company was being liquidated.

:02:35.:02:43.

In a published court documents, the judge said he didn't have faith

:02:44.:02:47.

in the truthfulness or accuracy of the evidence by Mr Joshi said

:02:48.:02:52.

evidence of the court must be accurate, true and reliable but Mr

:02:53.:02:57.

Joshi's evidence demonstratively fails the test and he said in

:02:58.:03:01.

absence of a credible explanation, I'm driven to the conclusion that

:03:02.:03:04.

his original evidence was untrue and wholly improper attempts to

:03:05.:03:08.

mislead the court. From time to time,

:03:09.:03:11.

a judge will come to the conclusion that somebody appearing

:03:12.:03:14.

before him is less than truthful and when appropriate, they will say so.

:03:15.:03:20.

That happened in this case. What is unusual is Mr Joshi

:03:21.:03:25.

brought this on himself. Yes he was trying to rescue

:03:26.:03:28.

his company from being wound up but he didn't need to go to court

:03:29.:03:32.

and didn't need to get this damning comment by the deputy judge

:03:33.:03:36.

against him in a public judgement. Mr Joshi was working

:03:37.:03:49.

on the deal with an associate. They insist Mr Joshi and his

:03:50.:03:57.

involvement didn't scupper a big deal. As far as the dealers

:03:58.:04:00.

concerned, they are simply the facilitators of the introduction to

:04:01.:04:08.

the process. If they are involved in the bid, it will be of public

:04:09.:04:16.

interest. I can't comment on that. I am not aware of either

:04:17.:04:18.

of these people's circumstances. All I can say is as far as Riveroak

:04:19.:04:22.

is concerned, it is their bid and the bid was made in the name

:04:23.:04:26.

of their chief executive. It was made very clear.

:04:27.:04:34.

In the House of Commons, the local MP said Riveroak had made another

:04:35.:04:43.

offer but this afternoon that offer was rejected. The future for the

:04:44.:04:45.

airport is looking increasingly bleak.

:04:46.:04:48.

It was made very clear. Well, Mark Norman is at

:04:49.:04:50.

Manston Aiport now. Mark, pressure mounting.

:04:51.:04:54.

The airport due to close tomorrow and this afternoon local

:04:55.:04:57.

MP Sir Roger Gale raised the matter at Prime Minister's Questions?

:04:58.:05:01.

He was sitting alongside his fellow MP and talked about losing hundreds

:05:02.:05:11.

of jobs here and critical runway capacity. People protesting have

:05:12.:05:20.

been out here all day today. He talked about that enhanced bid by

:05:21.:05:24.

Riveroak but that bid has been rejected. Sir Roger Gale was left

:05:25.:05:31.

appealing to the Prime Minister. Ultimately the future of Manston

:05:32.:05:35.

Airport remains the responsibility of the airport owner but it is

:05:36.:05:41.

important the government is engaged and the Transport Secretary will be

:05:42.:05:47.

speaking about this issue and contacting Riveroak, the potential

:05:48.:05:51.

purchasers. They have to make a commercial decision and the

:05:52.:05:54.

government will do everything it can to help. It is beginning to look

:05:55.:05:59.

bleak. The protesters think there is still hope while the airport is

:06:00.:06:03.

still open. It remains open until five o'clock but they would like

:06:04.:06:10.

Riveroak and the owners to thrash it out in the deal.

:06:11.:06:14.

A member of UKIP, described as a rising star by leader

:06:15.:06:17.

Nigel Farage, has quit the party, labelling its campaign racist.

:06:18.:06:20.

21 year old Sanya`Jeet Tandi from Dartford in Kent claims the party is

:06:21.:06:23.

Just a week ago Ms Tandi, the party's former youth leader,

:06:24.:06:29.

appeared on national television defending the party's stance

:06:30.:06:31.

Speaking exclusively to this programme her father said she

:06:32.:06:34.

didn't want to be associated with racist comments.

:06:35.:06:43.

She is not a household name but she has become front`page news. She was

:06:44.:06:53.

the leader of UKIP's youth ring but has quit the party after labelling

:06:54.:06:58.

it racist. It seems a dramatic change of heart. Last week she

:06:59.:07:05.

defended the immigration policy. In terms of the immigration policy, the

:07:06.:07:09.

effects that it would incur, it would mean there were more equal

:07:10.:07:16.

opportunities for people across the whole world. In a newspaper article

:07:17.:07:18.

she has said: Speaking to BBC south`east, her

:07:19.:07:43.

father said she felt she had no choice but to resign. There has been

:07:44.:07:53.

a lot of gaffes by UKIP members and it is getting to the stage where she

:07:54.:07:57.

thinks they should be thinking about what they are saying. I think the

:07:58.:08:06.

racism is starting to show a little bit and she doesn't want to be

:08:07.:08:08.

associated with those comments any more. I can see one party offering

:08:09.:08:18.

real change. Speaking here, she had previously been described as a

:08:19.:08:24.

rising star. He says she is surprised by her decision. Bravely

:08:25.:08:31.

she appeared on television defending the immigration policy. I am

:08:32.:08:37.

surprised. Nigel Farage has acknowledged that a handful of UKIP

:08:38.:08:42.

candidates have said stupid or offensive things but he says they

:08:43.:08:45.

never have and they never will represent the views of the party.

:08:46.:08:53.

Louise, how damaging is this, with just over a week to go before

:08:54.:08:56.

Nigel Farage has been out campaigning and he has had to defend

:08:57.:09:12.

his party. He hoped to draw a line under that because he held an event

:09:13.:09:16.

in London surrounding himself by ethnic minority candidates saying

:09:17.:09:25.

UKIP was a party of inclusivity. It is not good news but as he says, a

:09:26.:09:30.

week ago she defended the party and can't understand her change of

:09:31.:09:35.

heart. He will be hoping it won't have too much impact at the polls.

:09:36.:09:43.

In a moment, why campaigners are wanting them mother of the bride on

:09:44.:09:50.

the marriage certificate. A Kent woman who was sent to a

:09:51.:09:54.

high`security prison after taking in a neglected dog, has been speaking

:09:55.:09:58.

about her experiences behind bars. Linda Reynolds was accused

:09:59.:10:01.

of stealing the animal, She was sentenced to six months

:10:02.:10:03.

at HMP Bronzefield in Ashford. She was asked to look after him and

:10:04.:10:31.

a few months later she was asked to hand the dog back. She didn't want

:10:32.:10:35.

to because she thought the dog wouldn't be elected `` looked after.

:10:36.:10:43.

She was sent to prison, one that houses many criminals. I was in

:10:44.:10:49.

prison with short list is `` shoplifters, muggers, drug dealers,

:10:50.:11:01.

murderers. I had one woman run of her list of crimes to me. They were

:11:02.:11:12.

quite angry. Linda was jailed for contempt of court, not taking the

:11:13.:11:17.

dog. It is effectively surveying a court order and being disrespectful

:11:18.:11:25.

to the report. It carries up to two years imprisonment and that sanction

:11:26.:11:30.

is necessary because without the power to imprison them, the court

:11:31.:11:38.

could be routinely ignored. Linda says the dog's welfare was her

:11:39.:11:42.

priority and say the police were embarrassed to pursue the case

:11:43.:11:45.

against her but understands why she felt the wrong side of the legal

:11:46.:11:52.

system. Taping `` keeping the dog save seemed to override everything.

:11:53.:11:56.

I was very scared. I don't regret it. Now she has published a book

:11:57.:12:02.

about her ordeal. A 51`year`old man

:12:03.:12:05.

from Margate has been found guilty of murdering his disabled partner

:12:06.:12:08.

nine years ago during a retrial Dean Williams has been sentenced to

:12:09.:12:11.

life in prison with Mary Malkin, who was 40,

:12:12.:12:15.

was strangled to death. He had admitted manslaughter

:12:16.:12:20.

by reasons of diminished A Rochester schoolboy who was seen

:12:21.:12:39.

lying down on Rachel carriageway before he `` dual carriageway before

:12:40.:12:53.

he was killed now and he was shouted at to get up. I didn't sleep for two

:12:54.:13:00.

weeks. It has been the hardest time. I feel so desperately sad for the

:13:01.:13:02.

parents. A Sussex MP is backing

:13:03.:13:07.

a campaign to update marriage certificates to include the names

:13:08.:13:10.

of a bride's mother's. At the moment, only the father

:13:11.:13:12.

of the bridge is formally included. The Green MP Caroline Lucas,

:13:13.:13:15.

who represents Brighton Pavilion, has written to the Home Office

:13:16.:13:18.

calling for the change to be made Campaigners say that marriage should

:13:19.:13:21.

not be seen as a business transaction

:13:22.:13:25.

between the father of the bride It is the ultimate family affair but

:13:26.:13:36.

is it `` but it is the father who walks the breakdown the aisle. He

:13:37.:13:41.

makes an embarrassing speech about her and it is his name and

:13:42.:13:45.

occupation that goes on the marriage certificate. For Kim, choosing the

:13:46.:13:52.

dress for her big day with her mother, that doesn't seem fair. Both

:13:53.:13:58.

parents bring you into the world, both parents are a huge part of your

:13:59.:14:03.

life and my father did die when I was 16. My mum has had to raise us

:14:04.:14:09.

as a single parent and she has been there every step of the way and it

:14:10.:14:13.

is right that her name should be included on the marriage

:14:14.:14:18.

certificate. Nowadays, when the whole family is setup, it is so

:14:19.:14:22.

diverse and this ought to been thought about and addressed. It

:14:23.:14:29.

seems so sad that I can't have my name on it. It has been this way

:14:30.:14:35.

since the 19th century but now an online petition to bring marriage

:14:36.:14:39.

certificates into the 21st has gathered many names. It is backed by

:14:40.:14:45.

Caroline Lucas. It is important that it is not seen as a transaction

:14:46.:14:48.

between the bride's father and the husband but actually something that

:14:49.:14:53.

is completely embraced by everybody involved and therefore the mother is

:14:54.:14:57.

just as important here as the father. It is a sentiment widely

:14:58.:15:04.

shared. They are both equal and should be on there. They should have

:15:05.:15:10.

both names on there. Some say a change would make history more

:15:11.:15:15.

accessible. If people are wanting to trace their family tree, they need

:15:16.:15:19.

to know who the mother was as well as the father. They only really have

:15:20.:15:25.

the father's name. Certificates for civil partnerships contain the

:15:26.:15:30.

signatures of all parents. They want equality for all. They say to

:15:31.:15:46.

replace marriage certificates across the country would be complex and

:15:47.:15:50.

costly but said it would consider it. What is interesting is the

:15:51.:15:54.

number of married people who didn't realise this was the case. One

:15:55.:15:59.

register or `` registrar said it was different because this comes with

:16:00.:16:05.

new legislation with civil partnerships. Campaigners are hoping

:16:06.:16:06.

to change all that. Military The Peace Party skilled in

:16:07.:16:52.

:16:53.:16:55.

parties' campaigns, plus information about all the other parties who want

your vote on our website ` bbc.co.uk/ news Our top story

:16:59.:17:01.

tonight BBC South East has discovered that one of the

:17:02.:17:03.

businessmen involved in putting together the latest bid for Manston

:17:04.:17:07.

Airport attempted to mislead a High Court judge over his business

:17:08.:17:34.

dealings last year. The revelation comes as that the 11th hour bid has

:17:35.:17:38.

been rejected by the owners. Also in tonight's programme: Getting up

:17:39.:17:40.

close and very personal with the people of Folkestone; controversial

:17:41.:17:43.

photographer Spencer Tunick prepares to shoot the town, naked. And Johnny

:17:44.:17:48.

later for the forecast. 750 years ago, a battle was fought in the

:17:49.:17:51.

Sussex town of Lewes which historians say is one of the key

:17:52.:17:54.

moments in British history. As part of the town's commemorations of the

:17:55.:17:58.

event, an extraordinary work of art has been created to rival the Bayeux

:17:59.:18:01.

Tapestry. The volunteers have taken three years to create it ` and used

:18:02.:18:05.

almost four miles of thread in the process. Mark Sanders has tonight's

:18:06.:18:16.

special report. 70 years ago today what happened in and around this

:18:17.:18:19.

small Sussex town helped shape the way we live now. Unveiled in the

:18:20.:18:27.

grounds of the castle, something to remeber it by ` a stitch in time:

:18:28.:18:31.

The Battle of Lewes Tapestry. We have all these people fleeing from

:18:32.:18:34.

the devastation. I think the way we have the movement in there is

:18:35.:18:37.

brilliant. The tapestry was greeted by a team of more than 60 stitchers

:18:38.:18:49.

`` created by a team. Similar stitches were used to create this

:18:50.:18:55.

tapestry which does not shy away from the blood of battle. That

:18:56.:19:01.

should be shown and remembered more than anything else. The battle of

:19:02.:19:10.

Lewes is seen as an important step in developing our democracy. The

:19:11.:19:19.

King last and the first representative Parliament of England

:19:20.:19:22.

were summoned. The tapestry is part of a community project and there are

:19:23.:19:28.

three series of events in Lewes this weekend is to bring the battle to

:19:29.:19:33.

life. We have hundreds of people engaged in exploring and discovering

:19:34.:19:36.

their cultural heritage. It is about their history today and making it

:19:37.:19:43.

relevant. This is an art form that would have been well known at the

:19:44.:19:47.

time of the battle, it is a 21st century version of one of the most

:19:48.:20:03.

important moments in our past. Some might call it risky, risque even,

:20:04.:20:06.

others would say it's barefaced cheek. Controversial American

:20:07.:20:08.

photographer Spencer Tunick has arrived in Folkestone to undertake

:20:09.:20:10.

his favourite passtime ` taking pictures of naked people. It is all

:20:11.:20:14.

in the best possible taste ` Spencer Tunick has photographed more than 75

:20:15.:20:17.

human installations around the world. He's been arrested five times

:20:18.:20:20.

while attempting to work outdoors in New York. `` his favourite pasttime.

Hopkirk has been to meet him. You could say he puts the exhibition

:20:43.:20:49.

into exhibitionism. He arrived today and planned his latest naked art

:20:50.:20:53.

installation. Even photographed these volunteers as nature intended.

:20:54.:21:02.

It is a beautiful walkway here and the blue of the water and the

:21:03.:21:07.

pristine nature of the beach are amazing. He photographed each of the

Brookstone beat off competition of them awake at `` from the likes of

:22:06.:22:08.

and I think they are looking forward to it. The exhibition will be how

:22:09.:22:21.

the Mac `` the exhibition will be held in a gallery from the weekend

in Folkestone. A pair of male penguins have become the unlikely

:22:33.:22:36.

stars of a kent zoo ` after hatching an abandoned egg, and raising the

:22:37.:22:39.

chick as their own. Kermit and Jumbs have taken to the job like ` well, a

:22:40.:22:44.

penguin to water. The zoo says they're the best parents they've

:22:45.:22:51.

got. Miranda Shunke has the story. Meet Jumbs and Kermit, two male

:22:52.:22:55.

penguins who have not only paired off as partners but have recently

:22:56.:22:58.

taken on a unique role as surrogate parents. They've really, really done

:22:59.:23:01.

well. A lot of first`time parents, they are not good at it. We lose the

:23:02.:23:06.

babies, they are not good at it. It takes them a second time to do it

:23:07.:23:10.

but these are first`time parents and they really have done it first time.

:23:11.:23:14.

We haven't had to help them or do anything for them at all. The male

:23:15.:23:18.

pair were given the abandoned egg to nurture and to stop them fighting.

:23:19.:23:21.

It soon hatched in the now shadrng newborn duties from feeding to

:23:22.:23:33.

chick`sitting. ``now sharing. And this is the little wonder they are

:23:34.:23:36.

rearing. It is just one month old and doing very well. I think it's

:23:37.:23:41.

quite cool. If that's what they want to do, go for it. They are doing a

:23:42.:23:51.

good job. Two dads? Bringing up a chick ` that's a good idea, isn't

:23:52.:24:02.

it? Like many other species in the animal world, same`sex pairings is

:24:03.:24:05.

not uncommon and it is thought they will now be partners for life. Do

:24:06.:24:09.

they look after each other? They do, they are very protective each other

:24:10.:24:12.

and they love each other. And they are likely to be parents again,

:24:13.:24:16.

adding to their brood next year now they have cracked it.

:24:17.:24:24.

Temperatures could be in the low 20s by Friday the weekend of which is

:24:25.:24:37.

good news if you're powering a barbecue ``planning a barbecue. We

:24:38.:24:44.

will stay dry again tonight and you might see some mist and fog forming.

:24:45.:24:48.

Temperatures will be in single figures with lows of around six

:24:49.:24:51.

degrees of seven degrees in towns and cities and a little cooler end

:24:52.:24:59.

more rural spots. By the afternoon there will be some brightness but

:25:00.:25:03.

temperatures with the warmer air will be higher than today and should

:25:04.:25:07.

be highs of 18 degrees of 19 degrees and it will be very warm and

:25:08.:25:11.

pleasant day. Through tomorrow night it will be dry and very similar to

:25:12.:25:18.

tomorrow the Mac today. Temperatures will drop to eight degrees nine

:25:19.:25:22.

degrees overnight and on Friday there will be temperatures of 21

:25:23.:25:27.

degrees of 22 degrees. It will be the same sort of thing as we head

:25:28.:25:31.

towards the weekend because of this area of high pressure. Lots of sun

:25:32.:25:43.

over the next couple of days and it should be bright and sunny for the

:25:44.:25:44.

weekend. That is it. We will see you

:25:45.:25:53.

tomorrow. Goodbye. Europe. A community of nations
