Good evening. One it's time for the news | :00:00. | :00:11.
Good evening. Two men in Brazil will stand trial | :00:12. | :00:14.
for the manslaughter of a woman from Kent. Gillian Metcalf was killed in | :00:15. | :00:18.
a boat collision in South America last year. Her family has been | :00:19. | :00:21.
urging the authorities there to prosecute those responsible, as Ian | :00:22. | :00:22.
Palmer reports. Since his wife's death last | :00:23. | :00:25.
September, Charlie Metcalf has been trying to get those responsible to | :00:26. | :00:29.
be tried in court. This week, the authorities in Brazil confirmed this | :00:30. | :00:35.
will happen. Well, we never stopped believing it would happen. But when | :00:36. | :00:40.
it did happen, it came as a shock. Because they crumbled so suddenly. | :00:41. | :00:45.
From telling us it could be months before even a decision is made | :00:46. | :00:48.
about, would there be a prosecution who would be prosecuted. Gillian | :00:49. | :00:54.
Metcalf was a mother of two daughters. A lawyer, she went to | :00:55. | :01:12.
Brazil to celebrate her 50th birthday with her family. During a | :01:13. | :01:15.
boat trip on the blackwater in Manaus, there was a collision. Mrs | :01:16. | :01:18.
Metcalf suffered fatal injuries. Witnesses described a game of | :01:19. | :01:21.
chicken between the captains of both vessels. In an interview for | :01:22. | :01:37.
Brazilian televison, one of the pilots said he acted responsibly. | :01:38. | :01:40.
The story has topped news bulletins in Brazil. Newspapers have | :01:41. | :01:42.
highlighted every twist and turn. Some journalists in South America | :01:43. | :01:45.
say, because the country is hosting the World Cup next month, the | :01:46. | :01:48.
authorities have been forced to act quickly. They have a task. And that | :01:49. | :01:52.
task is to see justice done. That gives us something to busy ourselves | :01:53. | :01:56.
with. And I've got my two daughters, so we have stayed strong as a unit | :01:57. | :02:00.
and we're focused on getting this done. | :02:01. | :02:02.
The owner of Manston Airport is expected to hold a meeting in ten | :02:03. | :02:06.
days' time with people who want to re`open it, BBC South East Today has | :02:07. | :02:09.
learned. The new leader of Thanet District Council says she had a | :02:10. | :02:12.
"positive" telephone conversation with Ann Gloag this afternoon. The | :02:13. | :02:20.
airport closed on Thursday. Firefighters have been battling a | :02:21. | :02:23.
blaze involving 100 tonnes of rubbish on an industrial estate in | :02:24. | :02:26.
Aylesford today. They were called to New Hythe Lane in Larkfield at | :02:27. | :02:29.
11:15am this morning. Crews have been at the scene for most of the | :02:30. | :02:33.
day trying to prevent it from spreading. | :02:34. | :02:37.
The Home Office has denied claims that several vehicles a day pass | :02:38. | :02:40.
through border controls carrying children who may be victims of | :02:41. | :02:43.
trafficking. The claims were made by a UKIP MEP candidate on the Sunday | :02:44. | :02:45.
Politics. A UK border official told me this | :02:46. | :02:49.
week that there is nine or ten coach loads a day coming through. They | :02:50. | :02:53.
have got 12 to 30 minibus fulls and there is a load of children in | :02:54. | :02:56.
there. And those children's surnames do not match up with the people who | :02:57. | :03:00.
are actually in there. So, I am really concerned about people | :03:01. | :03:02.
trafficking. And a reminder there's in`depth | :03:03. | :03:05.
coverage of all the main parties' campaigns, plus information about | :03:06. | :03:07.
all the other parties standing for election on our website, | :03:08. | :03:09.
bbc.co.uk/news tonight the Home Office said border officials are | :03:10. | :03:11.
trained to protect immigrants and check there is no wafer immigrants | :03:12. | :03:20.
to come in. Police have described the theft of a | :03:21. | :03:23.
bronze statue from a children's memorial garden as "despicable". The | :03:24. | :03:26.
?10,000 statue was taken from the Kent and Sussex Crematorium. It was | :03:27. | :03:30.
originally commissioned by a local charity, who support women after | :03:31. | :03:32.
stillbirths. Now, Kent Police are making a fresh appeal for anyone | :03:33. | :03:36.
with information to "do the right thing". Victoria Holland reports. | :03:37. | :03:39.
A garden full of memories. When Louise Ellis gave birth to her | :03:40. | :03:43.
daughter, nearly 18 years ago, she knew that she had already died. It | :03:44. | :03:47.
was one of the hardest days of my life, I have to say, bittersweet | :03:48. | :03:49.
memories. She was beautiful, absolutely beautiful, perfect in | :03:50. | :03:52.
every way. Louise was supported by a local charity, Sands, they raised | :03:53. | :03:56.
money to create a memorial garden in the Kent and Sussex Crematorium. But | :03:57. | :04:00.
two weeks ago, the centrepiece, this bronze statue of two children | :04:01. | :04:05.
dancing, was stolen. It has either been taken for its artistic value, | :04:06. | :04:08.
which is very costly for the charity to have had commissioned. However, | :04:09. | :04:13.
it is more likely that it has been taken for its value as metal, which | :04:14. | :04:16.
will be considerably less than what the charity paid. It is understood | :04:17. | :04:21.
that the statue was taken sometime between the first and fourth May. It | :04:22. | :04:25.
used to stand on this round plinth. Now, all that is left is the holes | :04:26. | :04:30.
from where it was ripped out. It's so sad that it's been stolen. It's | :04:31. | :04:34.
such a special place and the theives that have stolen it must know that, | :04:35. | :04:38.
they must know how special it is to us and to all the other bereaved | :04:39. | :04:41.
parents that are local to Tunbridge Wells. Kent police are urging anyone | :04:42. | :04:45.
with information to get in touch. For the parents who rely on this | :04:46. | :04:49.
garden, the statue may be gone, but like their children, it's not | :04:50. | :04:50.
forgotten. Good evening. Today was the warmest | :04:51. | :05:02.
day of the year so far in the South and East of England. In fact, as we | :05:03. | :05:06.
go through the next couple of days, it will still be quite warm and | :05:07. | :05:09.
mainly dry for tomorrow. Certainly not a cold start. The temperature | :05:10. | :05:13.
starts well in double figures in most towns. There are some good | :05:14. | :05:16.
spells of sunshine as well and most of the day will be dry. There will | :05:17. | :05:20.
be some fair weather cloud, always a bit colder towards the coast, but | :05:21. | :05:23.
inland, like today, temperatures well are into the 20s Celsius. | :05:24. | :05:26.
Possibly 24 degrees, the top temperature, 75 Fahrenheit. Mostly | :05:27. | :05:30.
dry, later in the evening, just coming in from the near continent, a | :05:31. | :05:33.
couple of showers to drift in potentially towards us. They could | :05:34. | :05:37.
be thundery, but most of us will avoid them altogether. From Tuesday | :05:38. | :05:40.
onwards, it will be more unsettled and cooler. Temperatures still | :05:41. | :05:44.
respectable for this time of year. There will be sunshine, too. | :05:45. | :05:51.
We will be back after the national news at 10:20pm. Goodbye. | :05:52. | :06:09.
St James Park and Sheffield both hit 25 Celsius this afternoon. That | :06:10. | :06:16.
gives us our warmest day in nearly nine months, since 5th September | :06:17. | :06:20.
2013. It goes without saying that it is going to be a warm night. Look | :06:21. | :06:24.
out for some showers clipping into eastern Scotland. Some of those | :06:25. | :06:28.
could be heavy. Still some patchy rain for western Scotland. More | :06:29. | :06:32.
persistent rain returning to Northern Ireland by the end of the | :06:33. | :06:36.
night. Showers across Mid and North Wales. Temperatures no lower than 13 | :06:37. | :06:41.
degrees. We start Monday on a much more positive footing across western | :06:42. | :06:45.
Scotland. Much drier than it has been through the weekend. Showers in | :06:46. | :06:48.
the North East. Showers around for Northern Ireland. Brighter spells | :06:49. | :06:51.
possible, too. Showers during the first part of the day for North | :06:52. | :06:55.
Wales. One or two briefly glancing across the North West of England and | :06:56. | :06:58. |
