Good Evening. Political shock waves this evening. It is | :00:00. | :00:12.
Good Evening. Political shock waves are being felt round the South East | :00:13. | :00:15.
following the UK Independence Party's victory in the European | :00:16. | :00:18.
elections where they swept the board winning in the majority of areas. | :00:19. | :00:23.
Following the success in the local elections last week, the party has | :00:24. | :00:26.
turned the voting map purple across Kent and Sussex. Out of ten MEP's at | :00:27. | :00:32.
the start of last night, five were Conservative. Now there are four | :00:33. | :00:36.
UKIP MEPs. The Conservative Party has three. Labour, the Liberal | :00:37. | :00:39.
Democrats and the Green Party have one each. In Thanet, 46% of voters | :00:40. | :00:46.
voted for UKIP. Our Political Editor, Louise Stewart looks at the | :00:47. | :00:52.
results. Throughout the campaign in Nigel | :00:53. | :00:56.
Farage had promised his party would cause an earthquake in British | :00:57. | :01:02.
politics. Today he is celebrated as UKIP did top the polls in most of | :01:03. | :01:06.
the council areas across the south`east. He says it gives his | :01:07. | :01:11.
party a strong base for fighting the general election. Look at the local | :01:12. | :01:14.
election results that happened on Thursday and the English County | :01:15. | :01:17.
election results that happened in May of last year. You do not have to | :01:18. | :01:22.
be a rocket scientist to work out that in constituencies like | :01:23. | :01:27.
Grimsby, Boston, Yarmouth, Thanet, Folkestone, Portsmouth, Plymouth, | :01:28. | :01:32.
oh, we do like to be beside the seaside! UKIP came top of the polls | :01:33. | :01:36.
in the vast majority of areas that have published their results. From | :01:37. | :01:41.
Dartford to Dover to Crawley the Conservatives only topped the polls | :01:42. | :01:46.
in three areas and Labour topped them in Brighton. It is clearly UKIP | :01:47. | :01:51.
message has resonated with voters. There are too many immigrants in the | :01:52. | :01:55.
town. I am not rise system but I think their areas. `` I am not | :01:56. | :02:01.
racist. I think they have different ideas and they are putting forward | :02:02. | :02:05.
and people are fed up with what is going on. I say, bring it on, Nigel. | :02:06. | :02:10.
I say that because I think the major parties need to be shaken up. With | :02:11. | :02:16.
an increase of 13% on the vote share in the south`east, experts say the | :02:17. | :02:23.
surge in popularity of UKIP must be taken seriously. David Cameron has a | :02:24. | :02:26.
massive task on his hands in the south`east because people do not | :02:27. | :02:30.
believe he can deliver in Europe and immigration the kind of policies | :02:31. | :02:34.
that UKIP are promising. UKIP cannot deliver them either but people | :02:35. | :02:37.
currently think that UKIP are the new kid on the block and they are | :02:38. | :02:41.
exciting and Mr Cameron's party looks old`fashioned and jaded. The | :02:42. | :02:45.
current MP in the area who is standing down does not believe that | :02:46. | :02:48.
South Thanet is an easy target for UKIP. It is a conservative majority | :02:49. | :02:55.
and it is between the Conservatives and Labour but he will make his | :02:56. | :02:59.
choice and I am sure that we will respond accordingly. As the dust | :03:00. | :03:03.
settles on these election results Nigel Farage will have to decide | :03:04. | :03:07.
whether to stand in the south`east at the general election. Wherever he | :03:08. | :03:11.
does choose will be a key battle ground for all of the parties. | :03:12. | :03:14.
Well, Louise Stewart joins us now from Crawley. A historic night for | :03:15. | :03:22.
UKIP. Could this be replicated in a general election? | :03:23. | :03:27.
There is no doubt it was a really good night for UKIP at the polls and | :03:28. | :03:32.
I think because of that support base and in places like Sussex and Kent | :03:33. | :03:36.
Nigel Farage is increasingly looking as though he will stand in this | :03:37. | :03:40.
region and possibly in South Thanet. It is quite difficult to | :03:41. | :03:44.
extrapolate from the results we've had in the past few days how people | :03:45. | :03:48.
would vote in the general election. Look here in Crawley, a big victory | :03:49. | :03:54.
for Labour in Crawley and they took more seats than predicted and seize | :03:55. | :03:57.
control of the council back from the Conservatives and they said that it | :03:58. | :04:01.
put them in a strong position for the next general election. UKIP when | :04:02. | :04:05.
they were on Thursday night but last night they topped the poll is there. | :04:06. | :04:09.
What I think it shows is that people vote differently at local and | :04:10. | :04:13.
European elections than they do when it comes to choosing their next | :04:14. | :04:17.
government. Many thanks. You can find out more | :04:18. | :04:25.
on our website. The National Trust says an important | :04:26. | :04:28.
wildlife habitat near Brighton could take years to recover after an | :04:29. | :04:34.
illegal rave was held there. A large group descended on Devils Dyke for a | :04:35. | :04:37.
party over the weekend. Sussex Police said it couldn't close the | :04:38. | :04:41.
event down given the officers it had available. Mark Sanders reports. | :04:42. | :04:50.
A rave on the Southdown is. At its height around 2000 people attended | :04:51. | :04:54.
the illegal party at Devils Dyke this weekend and there were about | :04:55. | :04:59.
400 vehicles. This is the cost, an important habitat is damaged. The | :05:00. | :05:07.
site is important. It is a site of special scientific interest for its | :05:08. | :05:13.
chalk grassland. Where vehicles have been, they have trashed that | :05:14. | :05:16.
grassland under no end of damage that could take five or ten years to | :05:17. | :05:20.
recover. The National Trust has started | :05:21. | :05:24.
fixing fencing that was cut over the weekend. It owns and manages this | :05:25. | :05:28.
land. Rubbish has been left right across the site and The National | :05:29. | :05:32.
Trust is asking people to come on Wednesday to help volunteers clear | :05:33. | :05:37.
it up. There were complaints from nearby residents about noise from | :05:38. | :05:40.
the rave but the Sussex Police said they could not close the event down | :05:41. | :05:44.
given the number of police officers available. The force said it tried | :05:45. | :05:49.
to contain the gathering. Today walkers at the beauty spot were | :05:50. | :05:54.
dismayed by what they found. It is a disgrace, they have all come down | :05:55. | :05:57.
here and lifted and not cared about it. It puts people off because | :05:58. | :06:04.
people I ask if they want to go camping and they will not allow | :06:05. | :06:08.
anything like that again. In terms of damage to the chalk grassland, | :06:09. | :06:11.
The National Trust believe that the effects of a weekend of partying | :06:12. | :06:15.
could last for years. Police say they want to speak to | :06:16. | :06:19.
three men who used a sheet to break the fall of a woman who jumped two | :06:20. | :06:23.
storeys from a burning building in Hastings. The fire broke out in the | :06:24. | :06:26.
early hours of Sunday in Marine Parade and spread to neighbouring | :06:27. | :06:29.
properties. The 66`year`old woman jumped around 40 feet from a window | :06:30. | :06:33.
and is currently in a critical condition in hospital. | :06:34. | :06:37.
Police in Kent are investigating a serious collision in Gravesend. | :06:38. | :06:40.
Officers were called to Earl Road shortly after 5am on Saturday after | :06:41. | :06:44.
a BMW crashed into a wall and traffic lights near the junction | :06:45. | :06:51.
with Perry Street. The driver, a 26`year`old man, was taken to a | :06:52. | :06:53.
London hospital with life`threatening injuries. | :06:54. | :06:59.
That is the news. Let us get an update on the weather now. | :07:00. | :07:03.
That is the news. Let us get an This bank holiday in historic and | :07:04. | :07:07.
the most dodgy bank holiday of the whole year because it is the start | :07:08. | :07:11.
of the European monsoon, where every year at the end of Main and | :07:12. | :07:14.
throughout the end of June we get waves of wet weather which | :07:15. | :07:17.
scientists believe it's because of ice sheets melting in Greenland as | :07:18. | :07:21.
they do every year at this time of year. It is also because the | :07:22. | :07:25.
European landmasses eating which creates low pressure which is | :07:26. | :07:30.
exactly what we have got this week. Take a look at the charts. We are in | :07:31. | :07:35.
a low`pressure sandwich with the lows bouncing around us all week | :07:36. | :07:38.
long so it will stay cloudy and there is a lot more wet weather to | :07:39. | :07:42.
as well. It is cloudy now and rainy now and it will not change a lot. It | :07:43. | :07:47.
is going to be wet overnight tonight and sometimes it will become a bit | :07:48. | :07:50.
drier but we will always have the rain never far away. At least the | :07:51. | :07:56.
temperatures are mild, down to 11 or 12. Tomorrow I doubt you will see | :07:57. | :08:04.
any sunshine, it is just going to be a cloudy start and fairly wet at | :08:05. | :08:09.
times. There are heavy showers as well. Some places will get less rain | :08:10. | :08:14.
than today and others will get more so it depends whether showers are. | :08:15. | :08:19.
The temperatures are disappointing. As we go into Wednesday there is not | :08:20. | :08:24.
a great deal of change. More low`pressure coming towards us so | :08:25. | :08:27.
some places will have drier interludes and a chance of getting a | :08:28. | :08:32.
bit of brightness where we could get temperatures up to 18 degrees. Maybe | :08:33. | :08:35.
a slight improvement on Wednesday but you are going to have to have | :08:36. | :08:40.
your umbrellas close by throughout the week. Rain on and off throughout | :08:41. | :08:45.
the week but do not book tickets to Honolulu just yet because towards | :08:46. | :08:48.
the end of the week there is a hint that high pressure could start to | :08:49. | :08:53.
build. Perhaps it will be sunny at the end of the week and the weekend | :08:54. | :08:56.
and even next week. Something to look forward to. At last! | :08:57. | :09:02.
Just to recap on our top story. UKIP are celebrating in the south`east, | :09:03. | :09:06.
having taken significant gains on the political map here in Kent and | :09:07. | :09:10.
Sussex. You can find out much more if you want to if you go to our | :09:11. | :09:22.
website. You can also tweet us. That is it from us, we will be back later | :09:23. | :09:25.
on this evening, goodbye. | :09:26. | :09:29. |
