Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith. | :00:07. | :00:08.
A row breaks out as authorities in Calais prepare to tear down camps | :00:09. | :00:17.
set up by migrants hoping to make it to UK. We're live in France. | :00:18. | :00:25.
Sussex Police come under fire for their handling of an illegal rave. | :00:26. | :00:31.
He does like to be beside the seaside ` we speak to Nigel Farage | :00:32. | :00:35.
after huge gains for UKIP across the South East. | :00:36. | :00:41.
The other parties are using the word protest vote as a comfort blanket. | :00:42. | :00:48.
The beginning of an exciting journey for Canterbury Cathedral, | :00:49. | :00:52.
with a ?12 million grant for major restoration works. | :00:53. | :00:54.
And the Brighton teen who's becoming a huge star and very rich ` | :00:55. | :00:58.
by offering make`up and fashion tips online. | :00:59. | :01:03.
The notorious camps in Calais, set up by migrants hoping to cross | :01:04. | :01:08.
the Channel to England ` are to be destroyed in the next few days. | :01:09. | :01:12.
Following a recent outbreak of scabies in the camps, | :01:13. | :01:14.
the authorities say they now pose a public health risk. | :01:15. | :01:18.
It comes just two months after BBC South East filmed migrants risking | :01:19. | :01:22.
their lives trying to stowaway on lorries heading for Dover. | :01:23. | :01:27.
It is. There are currently around 800 illegal immigrants sleeping | :01:28. | :01:42.
rough here in Calais. The deadline for them to leave camps like this | :01:43. | :01:46.
one has now passed but most have decided to stay. We have seen police | :01:47. | :01:52.
circling all day around the camp, looking at the task ahead. It is | :01:53. | :01:55.
believed they could go into sites like this one to clear them this | :01:56. | :02:04.
morning. It is what hundreds: Home, many admitting this is just a | :02:05. | :02:07.
stopgap in an attempt to get to England. One of the immigrants | :02:08. | :02:11.
showed me where he sleeps. He fears what will happen after the police | :02:12. | :02:18.
clear the site. We do not know where to go. Nothing. | :02:19. | :02:26.
Will you leave Cali? Now. We need to get England. | :02:27. | :02:36.
Why England? The French people care about dogs better than us! | :02:37. | :02:43.
Earlier are cameras showed that some were prepared to sit under lorries | :02:44. | :02:47.
in an attempt to get to Dover. Authorities in Calais have said that | :02:48. | :02:53.
this cannot be allowed to continue on public land on hygiene grounds. A | :02:54. | :02:58.
notice was put up here on Sunday telling people living here that they | :02:59. | :03:03.
had 48 hours to leave. Now it has become a waiting game to see when | :03:04. | :03:08.
exactly the authorities will move in. Some have already moved out to | :03:09. | :03:15.
sleep at a new site where food is served each evening. We came | :03:16. | :03:26.
yesterday. We came here because the police came to break up our camp. | :03:27. | :03:36.
In 2009 the French bulldozed the so`called jungle which had sprung up | :03:37. | :03:39.
after the asylum centre was shot down. This is what remains today. | :03:40. | :03:45.
Some say does not solve the problem. People will be disbursed in two | :03:46. | :03:50.
cities, probably harassed by the police and become invisible. It is | :03:51. | :03:53.
dangerous to cross the Channel and they are taking a lot of risk. With | :03:54. | :03:59.
this eviction, they will not have any place to stay and of course | :04:00. | :04:04.
there are going to try to cross the Channel. | :04:05. | :04:09.
Many MPs have been: On the French to take action. I have visited Calais | :04:10. | :04:16.
to try to pressure the authorities to clear the camps and that has | :04:17. | :04:20.
worked and is welcome. But we more action. | :04:21. | :04:23.
With the camps growing in size, this is an issue that the politicians in | :04:24. | :04:33.
Calais can no longer be ignored. What will happen to the people? | :04:34. | :04:40.
The police have not yet confirmed what they will do but critics say | :04:41. | :04:47.
they tore down some GATT and the jungle and now you have the camps | :04:48. | :05:06.
here `` Sangatte. Many have died in their attempts to get to Britain and | :05:07. | :05:10.
that is why the authorities here and in Britain say they have to do | :05:11. | :05:12.
something. Thank you. | :05:13. | :05:18.
The handling of an illegal rave by Sussex police has led to | :05:19. | :05:21.
a row between senior officers and the Police and Crime Commissioner. | :05:22. | :05:24.
About two thousand party`goers descended on Devil's Dyke, | :05:25. | :05:26.
Police officers said they couldn't shut the event down because they | :05:27. | :05:31.
didn't have the resources ` but the county's PCC Katy Bourne has | :05:32. | :05:34.
told the BBC they did ` and she's ordered an investigation. | :05:35. | :05:37.
It was not what people out for a stroll at a beauty spot on Sunday | :05:38. | :05:48.
expected. It took this cycle by surprise. And this dog walker. She | :05:49. | :05:56.
spotted a police officer and went straight to him. He said we cannot | :05:57. | :05:59.
do anything at the moment as they do not have enough police officers. | :06:00. | :06:06.
How did his attitude strike you? Very laid back, no sense of urgency. | :06:07. | :06:10.
When I did come back and get my car, they were driving, young people were | :06:11. | :06:17.
driving away, no one was checking if they were under the influence. Some | :06:18. | :06:21.
could barely stand up. But throughout the day there has | :06:22. | :06:27.
been speedy clarification of the police?s state. Any statement they | :06:28. | :06:31.
said: That came as a surprise to the | :06:32. | :06:50.
elected police and crime commission. She said that the resources were | :06:51. | :06:54.
there. My assurance to the public of Sussex | :06:55. | :07:00.
is that if extra resources are needed to police events such as | :07:01. | :07:05.
these, those resources are available to them. | :07:06. | :07:08.
Even though the police themselves do not seem to know that? | :07:09. | :07:10.
The police make operational decisions. It is not down to me. My | :07:11. | :07:16.
job is to set the Budget with the Chief Constable and we have agreed | :07:17. | :07:21.
that the Budget is there and should they need extra resources, should | :07:22. | :07:26.
the operational decision be made, the resources are available. | :07:27. | :07:29.
Half`hour later, the police officer in charge clarified his position. We | :07:30. | :07:32.
made a risk assessment based on public safety and it was at that | :07:33. | :07:39.
point we decided not to go in and tried to physically close the event | :07:40. | :07:44.
down. I did not say there was a lack of resources. | :07:45. | :07:48.
Your statement said it was. If we need resources we can get. | :07:49. | :07:53.
The complex business of shedding light on how policing is done these | :07:54. | :07:57.
days was sparked by a very visible problem. | :07:58. | :08:03.
What does this say about how policing is being run these days? | :08:04. | :08:08.
It shows it is much more political. You have unelected person facing the | :08:09. | :08:12.
election, the Police and Crime Commissioners, who does not won the | :08:13. | :08:16.
message to get out that there are not resources to tackle raves like | :08:17. | :08:20.
this. On the other hand, you have police officers on Sunday, at least, | :08:21. | :08:24.
who do not pay selections and they say we think there are not enough | :08:25. | :08:28.
resources. And then clarifying that. For those who think this is | :08:29. | :08:32.
not about politics but damage to the environment, the message from The | :08:33. | :08:38.
National Trust is that they hope people will come to help clear up | :08:39. | :08:40.
tomorrow. Thank you. | :08:41. | :08:44.
We're live in Hastings where police are still trying to trace three men | :08:45. | :08:48.
who tried to save a woman from a huge fire. | :08:49. | :08:58.
The political map of the South East has turned purple after the results | :08:59. | :09:01.
of the European Elections were announced this weekend. | :09:02. | :09:04.
Following on from their success in the local elections last week, | :09:05. | :09:07.
UKIP topped the polls in 19 out of our 23 council areas. | :09:08. | :09:10.
The Conservatives only won in three councils and Labour in just one. | :09:11. | :09:13.
So of our 10 MEPs, there are now 4 UKIP, 3 Conservative MEPs, with | :09:14. | :09:17.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party each with one MEP. | :09:18. | :09:22.
In Thanet, Folkestone, Medway and Gravesham, | :09:23. | :09:23.
I think what we need to do as a Conservative Party is listen and | :09:24. | :09:37.
understand why people are upset about loss of clinical control to | :09:38. | :09:41.
Europe, loss of control over borders, and we need to reiterate | :09:42. | :09:44.
the fact that the Conservative Party are the best party placed and the | :09:45. | :09:49.
only party that can realistically address those issues. | :09:50. | :09:52.
So how were the votes shared between the parties? | :09:53. | :09:55.
UKIP increased their share of the vote to just over 32%. | :09:56. | :09:58.
The Conservatives had their share drop to nearly 31%. | :09:59. | :10:00.
Labour's support rose to just under 15%. | :10:01. | :10:02.
Fourth place Greens dropped to 9%, and the Liberal Democrats fell | :10:03. | :10:05.
So with more than 40% of people in Thanet voting for UKIP ` and with | :10:06. | :10:12.
speculation that Nigel Farage may stand there for the General Election | :10:13. | :10:16.
what is the feeling amongst the electorate who decided to go purple? | :10:17. | :10:20.
Margate in the rain. One plays Nigel Farage must consider if he wants to | :10:21. | :10:34.
run for parliament. Haven't got to be a rocket scientist to work out | :10:35. | :10:38.
that in constituencies like great Grimsby, Austen, John, and, | :10:39. | :10:45.
Portsmouth, Plymouth, we do like to be BSkyB seaside. | :10:46. | :10:51.
Here in Thanet, the three main political parties got drenched by | :10:52. | :10:56.
the voters. Does Nigel Farage make a break for Essex, which he also has | :10:57. | :11:02.
support, or does he come to Kent and tried to make a run for parliament | :11:03. | :11:05.
from here? Pundits wonder could Nigel Farage be more of the Kent | :11:06. | :11:16.
man? I would think Thanet would work well for him. We have a lot of | :11:17. | :11:21.
people in Thanet that are obviously foreign people. A lot of them do not | :11:22. | :11:28.
go out and earn their trust. I personally think if he went in that | :11:29. | :11:40.
ward, he would win it. Hands down. It worries me how far it could go. | :11:41. | :11:47.
Not keen at all. How did you vote? | :11:48. | :11:55.
Not for him! . You can see why I have come here. To meet some people | :11:56. | :12:02.
from the communities in Margate. Some of us come here to work very | :12:03. | :12:07.
hard, they say. It's good for the economy and good for you. He is not | :12:08. | :12:12.
happy about us and we hear about this but if it was not for the | :12:13. | :12:16.
Europeans, the economy would be down in England. European people help the | :12:17. | :12:21.
economy go up. Polish people work very hard and I feel at home here. I | :12:22. | :12:29.
have been here for ten years and it feels like home. I am really not | :12:30. | :12:33.
happy if he say to me goodbye go home. | :12:34. | :12:40.
Some may want Nigel Farage intent but there are others who may want | :12:41. | :12:49.
him in the ocean! My advice is to be beware. | :12:50. | :12:54.
Well, earlier the UKIP leader Nigel Farage joined me from Brussels | :12:55. | :12:58.
and I began by asking him if, after his is party's success | :12:59. | :13:01.
in the European elections, he was now ready to put his hat | :13:02. | :13:05.
in the ring to stand in South Thanet at the general election? | :13:06. | :13:08.
No. I am here in Brussels trying to stop the next European president | :13:09. | :13:18.
being an ultra`federalist. Then we have a by`election next week. I have | :13:19. | :13:32.
a fair load on my plate. Host back we hear that you had to suspend a | :13:33. | :13:40.
member over allegations of homophobia and you have had problems | :13:41. | :13:44.
with party members going off message. There is work to do to | :13:45. | :13:47.
convince people of the credibility of UKIP. You could say that about | :13:48. | :13:53.
the other parties. What was remarkable during the campaign was | :13:54. | :13:58.
that 17 councillors from other parties were arrested! Actually | :13:59. | :14:02.
arrested. Over a range of serious charges. Of course we have had | :14:03. | :14:06.
people at a very junior level in our party... | :14:07. | :14:11.
No, we're talking about a small, a councillor from Redditch who is | :14:12. | :14:18.
facing disciplinary action who has only just been elected... Yes there | :14:19. | :14:24.
was a Liberal Democrat convicted of aggravated assault. Others were | :14:25. | :14:30.
convicted of charges relating to child pornography... When it comes | :14:31. | :14:37.
to general elections and scrutiny, our candidates are very seriously | :14:38. | :14:41.
put through their paces and I am absolutely convinced that when you | :14:42. | :14:44.
see the raft of candidates standing in the South East in the general | :14:45. | :14:48.
election next year, you will be impressed by the calibre and by the | :14:49. | :14:52.
experience of real life. People thought differently in local | :14:53. | :14:57.
lot of disillusionment with the main lot of disillusionment with the main | :14:58. | :15:03.
three parties. Does that suggest this was a protest bought to you? | :15:04. | :15:09.
Every time we do well, 2009 we came second in the European elections and | :15:10. | :15:15.
we were described as a protest vote. We got nearly one quarter of the | :15:16. | :15:18.
vote last year in the county elections and I was told that was a | :15:19. | :15:22.
protest vote. And now we talk the polls in the United Kingdom and I'm | :15:23. | :15:27.
told it is a protest vote. Actually, what is happening is that the other | :15:28. | :15:31.
three parties are using the words protest vote as a comfort blanket so | :15:32. | :15:34.
that they can feel better about life. The evidence is that there is | :15:35. | :15:38.
a growing number of people out there who aren't UKIP voters. They want to | :15:39. | :15:42.
vote UKIP in all forms of election because they believe we're the only | :15:43. | :15:45.
party standing up and saying what they believe. Thank you. Thank you. | :15:46. | :16:02.
A railway worker has been electrocuted after he fell | :16:03. | :16:05.
The 46`year`old man, from Hastings died at the | :16:06. | :16:09.
St Leonards West Marina Depot during the early hours of Saturday. | :16:10. | :16:12.
An air ambulance spokesman said the man suffered burns after he was | :16:13. | :16:16.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious. | :16:17. | :16:19.
Police are appealing for witnesses to an armed robbery | :16:20. | :16:22.
in Brighton, where a man brandishing a knife stole ?600 | :16:23. | :16:24.
from the Ladbrokes betting shop in Clarence Square just after nine | :16:25. | :16:27.
The robber is described as white, five feet nine to five feet ten, | :16:28. | :16:32.
thin and he was wearing a black Hollister hooded top, | :16:33. | :16:35.
Police are appealing for three men who tried to break | :16:36. | :16:39.
the fall of a woman who jumped 40 feet from a burning building | :16:40. | :16:42.
66 year old dentist Pirkko Pellinen suffered severe injuries, and is | :16:43. | :16:47.
still being treated in hospital after the fire in Marine Parade in | :16:48. | :16:52.
She is a very popular member. It is a very close`knit community here in | :16:53. | :17:10.
Hastings. This afternoon around 3040 businesses got together to try to | :17:11. | :17:17.
raise money for pure copper Liman and her partner. They have raised | :17:18. | :17:23.
?600. We spoke to her colleague and friend his book to us and told us | :17:24. | :17:29.
how devastated everyone was. She fell from a great height but she | :17:30. | :17:33.
is stable. We are pleased that at the moment they are saying she | :17:34. | :17:42.
should recover from her injuries. Neighbours have been able to access | :17:43. | :17:49.
properties from 5pm this afternoon. Some properties are severely | :17:50. | :17:53.
damaged. Police are not treating the fire as suspicious at the moment but | :17:54. | :17:57.
they are appealing for any witnesses who can come forward with any | :17:58. | :18:00.
information. In particular, three men who were seen to try to break | :18:01. | :18:06.
her fault with a bed sheet. If you have any information, these dial 101 | :18:07. | :18:16.
and get in touch. Tonight 's top story: Migrant camps in Calais by | :18:17. | :18:21.
people trying to get to the UK are to be destroyed by French | :18:22. | :18:23.
authorities. They said the camps pose a public health risk after an | :18:24. | :18:29.
outbreak of scabies. Amnesty International say they are putting | :18:30. | :18:32.
lives at risk. Also into nights programme: Is she the most | :18:33. | :18:41.
influential fashion commentator for teenage girls? We need internet | :18:42. | :18:48.
sensation Zoella. And after an overcast day, much | :18:49. | :18:50.
drier day for tomorrow. Services for stroke patients | :18:51. | :18:59.
at Tunbridge Wells Hospital have come under fire from the town's MP | :19:00. | :19:01.
who says that new performance Greg Clark says it's unacceptable | :19:02. | :19:05.
that only 20% of patients are The hospital was given | :19:06. | :19:09.
the lowest grade To spot the signs of a stroke you | :19:10. | :19:25.
have to think and act fast... Campaigns raise awareness of the | :19:26. | :19:28.
importance of acting fast that somebody might be having a stroke. | :19:29. | :19:32.
But it would appear that some hospitals in Kent are not acting | :19:33. | :19:36.
quickly enough. Ten indicators of stroke care were assessed as part of | :19:37. | :19:43.
this report and given a rating. He read Tunbridge Wells Hospital, in | :19:44. | :19:46.
all but one of those indicators they were rated as either a D or in. | :19:47. | :20:02.
Elsewhere in Kent that is 80%. 20% of patients are admitted to hospital | :20:03. | :20:06.
within four hours compared to 70% in other Kent hospitals. To enable | :20:07. | :20:10.
somebody to have access to everything, they need to have the | :20:11. | :20:16.
scan and the analysis of its and have it all looked at and decide | :20:17. | :20:21.
what is best for that person. The MP for the area is so concerned | :20:22. | :20:25.
he has written to the West Kent Clinical Commissioning Groups. He | :20:26. | :20:27.
says that these figures are... If it needs doing it should be done. | :20:28. | :20:41.
Every effort should be made. My daughter was there only a few weeks | :20:42. | :20:47.
ago. I have to say we have had much worse. | :20:48. | :20:53.
The NHS Trust responsible for the hospital so they have seen | :20:54. | :20:55.
improvements since this snapshot was taken. | :20:56. | :21:06.
Canterbury Cathedral is at the beginning of a long and | :21:07. | :21:09.
exciting journey ` so say the people who manage the globally recognised | :21:10. | :21:12.
building, as the heritage lottery fund announce they are giving almost | :21:13. | :21:15.
The plans will also see a new Welcome Centre | :21:16. | :21:19.
for the million visitors who are attracted to the world famous centre | :21:20. | :21:22.
of pilgrimage ` but the plans depend on raising a further ?7 million to | :21:23. | :21:26.
It is the gateway to a World Heritage Site but like many parts of | :21:27. | :21:40.
the cathedral it is crumbling. A ?12 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant | :21:41. | :21:46.
has been secured to preserve parts of the cathedral and the | :21:47. | :21:48.
Christchurch Gate. Some of the money will go to refurbishing the state. | :21:49. | :21:55.
And cleaning it to bring it back to the thing of beauty should be. | :21:56. | :22:00.
There is a catch. The only get the lottery cash if the cathedral can | :22:01. | :22:08.
raise 5p is now. It is scary. Today is a day I've been quietly happy for | :22:09. | :22:12.
the encouragement given by this injection of potential public funds. | :22:13. | :22:18.
It is also a day of challenge because we have to say that we | :22:19. | :22:22.
believe in this place. The costs of running the cathedral | :22:23. | :22:26.
at almost unbelievable, at ?18,000 per day. It has raised ?32.5 | :22:27. | :22:33.
million, including the latest HLF grant. That means there is still a | :22:34. | :22:39.
shortfall of at least ?80 million to carry out essential work. Now, the | :22:40. | :22:42.
fundraising strategy has changed. Assuming they can raise the money, | :22:43. | :22:46.
this copy shop will be converted into a visitor centre. The vast | :22:47. | :22:50.
majority of people coming here will still have to pay but if you live in | :22:51. | :22:55.
Canterbury you can apply for a smart card which gives you free entry to | :22:56. | :23:00.
the cathedral and events. It is the community focus which has impressed | :23:01. | :23:04.
the Heritage Lottery Fund. If you have a building as iconic as this | :23:05. | :23:08.
which is falling down, it is hard not to be focused on putting that | :23:09. | :23:13.
right. It is a real effort to see beyond that. But they have done and | :23:14. | :23:17.
therefore the project, rather than just about propping up the building, | :23:18. | :23:23.
has become about transformation. The cathedral wants to show that | :23:24. | :23:27.
history is far more than just stone and glass. | :23:28. | :23:32.
She's one of the rising stars of the global video blogging world | :23:33. | :23:35.
and her youtube channel ` offering hair and make`up tutorials | :23:36. | :23:38.
for teenagers ` has more than four million subscribers. | :23:39. | :23:41.
Zoe Sugg from Brighton, who uses the name Zoella on her blog, | :23:42. | :23:44.
was named one of the country's most influential Tweeters by a national | :23:45. | :23:47.
newspaper last year and such is her popularity among the nation's | :23:48. | :23:50.
teenagers, that she was mobbed at a One Direction concert. | :23:51. | :23:54.
Here I am, facially naked on the internet... | :23:55. | :24:09.
Whether you're after tips or the perfect lip gloss, Zoe Sugg 's video | :24:10. | :24:14.
blog on YouTube is such a hit with YouTube she has amassed a global | :24:15. | :24:20.
following. I was very shy so the thought of making a video online for | :24:21. | :24:25.
anyone to view was quite scary, but in the end I did it and the people | :24:26. | :24:30.
that read my blog went to watch my videos and I guess it just kind of | :24:31. | :24:33.
snowballed. The more people that watch, the more people liked it... | :24:34. | :24:40.
She is not a trained make`up artist and does not claim to be, she simply | :24:41. | :24:45.
shares her tips on beauty products with her audience. This is a nice | :24:46. | :24:52.
pressure to have. I can help people without really trying really hard. | :24:53. | :24:58.
Do you think they look at you like a big sister? Ya, I think so. | :24:59. | :25:12.
This is where it all happens? Yes, I sit here on my bed and use the | :25:13. | :25:19.
light, and... This style of blogging is now an | :25:20. | :25:22.
effective way of building a loyal fan base. Video blogging is popular | :25:23. | :25:28.
because it is shareable. It is three times more likely to be sheared than | :25:29. | :25:32.
normal text. Because you Tube is like a search engine, it is very | :25:33. | :25:37.
accessible. This has become her full`time job. | :25:38. | :25:42.
She maintains she is just a girl next door, just with a few million | :25:43. | :25:47.
followers. And there is better news of you want | :25:48. | :25:54.
to keep your hair in place. The rain is going away. Sunshine by the | :25:55. | :26:06.
weekend. Plenty of cloud cover around. Quite a wait, overcast and | :26:07. | :26:14.
cool feeling day. Because we have had northerly winds, temperatures | :26:15. | :26:17.
are feeling quite fresh. Around 14 degrees. It will feel cooler barely | :26:18. | :26:26.
see rain. We will see some rain for a time. Lots of cloud cover around. | :26:27. | :26:34.
We have overnight lows of 11 or 12 degrees. Perhaps an overcast start | :26:35. | :26:43.
to the day tomorrow, but it should stay dry. Perhaps by the afternoon, | :26:44. | :26:48.
we will see some breaks in that cloud. For the most part, it will be | :26:49. | :26:54.
a drier and dare I say it, warmer picture. Perhaps 17 degrees. Winds | :26:55. | :27:06.
in a westerly direction. Perhaps some outbreaks of light rain. For | :27:07. | :27:12.
Thursday, some sunshine but also some fairly heavy rain at times. For | :27:13. | :27:19.
the most part, the risk of brain is never too far away. But as we | :27:20. | :27:23.
promised, for Friday and the weekend it should improve. Hang on in | :27:24. | :27:38.
there! Thank you. I will be back at eight o'clock. Good night. | :27:39. | :27:43. |
