A reminder of our main story. Nick Clegg tells his supporters to | :00:00. | :00:00.
stand firm, dismissing talk of | :00:00. | :00:09.
Welcome to South East Today, I'm Polly Evans. | :00:10. | :00:11.
Clearing the camps ` French riot police oversee 800 | :00:12. | :00:17.
The Kent footballer fighting for his life in South Africa | :00:18. | :00:22.
We are not taking it day by day. We are taking it by the hour. | :00:23. | :00:42.
A go`cart crash at an event in Sussex leaves two toddlers in | :00:43. | :00:47.
And a pointed gesture ` a Sussex woman's voodoo pin cushions | :00:48. | :00:51.
of education secretary Michael Gove are so popular, | :00:52. | :00:53.
Just weeks after this programme exposed the | :00:54. | :01:11.
terrible risks migrants are prepared to take to get to the UK, today | :01:12. | :01:14.
French riot police oversaw the destruction of their illegal camps. | :01:15. | :01:17.
800 people have been told to move on ` although it?s not clear where | :01:18. | :01:21.
There were angry scenes as bulldozers moved in to clear the two | :01:22. | :01:28.
main campsites early this morning, amid concerns of a scabies outbreak | :01:29. | :01:31.
Simon Jones was there, and has sent this report from Calais. A last | :01:32. | :01:39.
desperate protest as the bulldozers go in | :01:40. | :01:49.
by one immigrant who called this camp | :01:50. | :01:51.
his home. One of hundreds told to leave. It is very bad. They want to | :01:52. | :01:56.
catch us, arrest us and put us in prison. Many immigrants, supported | :01:57. | :01:59.
by campaigners, resisted the attempts by the authorities to get | :02:00. | :02:05.
people onto buses for medical treatment and dispersal. We wanted | :02:06. | :02:14.
to leave the country only because there is a war in the country. And | :02:15. | :02:20.
France is unable to give something, to give food, a roof, a bed. We do | :02:21. | :02:26.
not agree with that. It is not possible for France to accept. The | :02:27. | :02:30.
day had begun calmly, the immigrants knowing this would be | :02:31. | :02:33.
their last morning in the camp, awaiting the arrival of the police | :02:34. | :02:40.
who were closing it on public health grounds. The police are out in force | :02:41. | :02:44.
in this camp. They are checking tent by tent | :02:45. | :02:49.
to make sure no one is left inside. They are telling people they must | :02:50. | :02:58.
leave so they can begin the task of clearing the camp. Where will you go | :02:59. | :03:10.
now? Maybe in the street, the park. I do not have a place. England. You | :03:11. | :03:14.
want to go to England? Yes. Why England? Because they do asylum in | :03:15. | :03:22.
England. Asylum? Yes. England is good. Work is good. This food | :03:23. | :03:27.
distribution centre is where many may bed down tonight. The | :03:28. | :03:30.
say they have no choice but to act. TRANSLATION: The camps will be | :03:31. | :03:34.
closed. They were far too big. They could no longer be properly managed. | :03:35. | :03:38.
And many residents at Calais say it is about time the police were called | :03:39. | :03:43.
in. We just hope to find a solution here. It is a shame for France and | :03:44. | :03:50.
for Calais to see people live like this. TRANSLATION: It is a good | :03:51. | :04:00.
thing. They should go elsewhere. The camp has now gone, but many | :04:01. | :04:03.
immigrants freely admit that their desire to get to Kent remains as | :04:04. | :04:06.
What is happening this evening? The police plan to put them on coaches | :04:07. | :04:31.
and offered them medication and then transport them to other parts of | :04:32. | :04:38.
France. But many have simply refused to go. They did not trust the | :04:39. | :04:46.
promises of the police. This is the daily where they are offered food | :04:47. | :04:51.
each night. Somehow plot came to them. They are planning to bed down | :04:52. | :04:58.
here for the night. It has been a day of high tension. Both the police | :04:59. | :05:05.
and the immigrants are watching to see how the situation will develop | :05:06. | :05:10.
Our exclusive footage of migrants, riding on the axles | :05:11. | :05:14.
of UK bound trucks and chasing after vehicles in a bid to reach | :05:15. | :05:17.
Britain, re`ignited concerns over illegal immigration from Calais. | :05:18. | :05:19.
According to the authorities in the French city, at least 100 | :05:20. | :05:22.
migrants a week are reaching the UK by concealing themselves on trucks. | :05:23. | :05:31.
One French charity says since 2002 there have been 200 migrants | :05:32. | :05:34.
And migrants who are trying to cross the channel and reach Dover are from | :05:35. | :05:40.
an array of countries including Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. | :05:41. | :05:42.
Well let's now go to Dover where we're joined by the town's | :05:43. | :05:45.
MP Charlie Elphicke who recently visited the camps with | :05:46. | :05:48.
Mr Elphicke, you've seen how determined | :05:49. | :05:51.
the people who've been living in the camps are, isn't this just going | :05:52. | :05:57.
That is my concern. While I welcome the camps being cleared we do not | :05:58. | :06:13.
want another set of camps. We want to see these people repatriated by | :06:14. | :06:18.
the French authorities or the asylum claims processed. | :06:19. | :06:22.
The French have said repeatedly that they don't have the resources | :06:23. | :06:25.
The police pick them up and move them on, | :06:26. | :06:28.
It is important to Calais and to Dover that the French do take | :06:29. | :06:36.
There doesn't seem to be much Britain can do to force the French | :06:37. | :06:43.
That is part of the difficulty that we have in the UK. Seeing to the | :06:44. | :06:59.
French Government, please repatriate these people. We take responsibility | :07:00. | :07:04.
on the side of the border. We have dealt with the issues of welfare to | :07:05. | :07:07.
the French Government, please repatriate these people. We take | :07:08. | :07:09.
responsibility on the side of the border. We have dealt with the | :07:10. | :07:11.
issues of wealthier cubism. Britain is no longer Eldorado. | :07:12. | :07:14.
You've said we have to put paid to this myth that Britain is Eldorado ` | :07:15. | :07:18.
but let?s face it, for people travelling | :07:19. | :07:20.
There is definitely an issue they are. Any place in Europe is more | :07:21. | :07:33.
attractive than these places. We need to take firm action against | :07:34. | :07:37.
trafficking gangs. An international effort is required. And you can see | :07:38. | :07:47.
our exclusive report on our Facebook page. | :07:48. | :07:53.
A former Charlton and Gillingham footballer is fighting | :07:54. | :07:55.
for his life in intensive care in South Africa, after being | :07:56. | :07:58.
involved in a serious car accident last Friday while on holiday. | :07:59. | :08:01.
20`year`old George Howard from Rainham has been in a coma for the | :08:02. | :08:04.
Our Home Affairs reporter Rebecca Williams has more. | :08:05. | :08:11.
He played for Charlton and gelling. George Howard was on holiday last | :08:12. | :08:22.
week when he was involved in a car crash. He is now on a life`support | :08:23. | :08:27.
machine. Friends and former team`mates have spoken of their | :08:28. | :08:34.
shock. This is very serious. He could be in hospital for months. We | :08:35. | :08:45.
are taking it by the hour. He could die. He will pull through IM sure. | :08:46. | :09:00.
You are not in the game long. George Howard could be seen here being | :09:01. | :09:07.
interviewed. He went to save Africa to take a break from playing. He is | :09:08. | :09:15.
in a critical condition. He joined gelling last summer but was. Their | :09:16. | :09:27.
manager has said he is devastated by the news. That sentiment has been | :09:28. | :09:36.
record on social media where friends and family are raising money for his | :09:37. | :09:42.
care, estimated to be ?15,000 per day. His insurance company has since | :09:43. | :09:50.
said it will cover the costs. He is one of the best people I have met. | :09:51. | :10:01.
Today our former England defender said: The family have travelled out | :10:02. | :10:15.
to South Africa to be at his bedside. | :10:16. | :10:23.
Well we're joined now live from Johannesburg | :10:24. | :10:25.

The reports that the half`year is that he was in the Cape Town region | :10:36. | :10:48.

that everyone at the club has their thoughts and players with George | :11:03. | :11:08.
Howard and his family. A Twitter account has been set up. A charity | :11:09. | :11:16.

The owner of the vehicle was faint. In March he was fined ?600 and | :12:39. | :12:43.
disqualified from driving for six months after a vehicle registered to | :12:44. | :12:53.
him was caught doing 149 mph. It is shocking that people can drive at | :12:54. | :12:59.
that speed. It is stupid. I have got a car that you could speed in, but | :13:00. | :13:03.
you would not do it because there are too many reason of being caught. | :13:04. | :13:19.
The M25 featured four times. The highest speed recorded was 149 mph. | :13:20. | :13:28.
Another motorist was recorded at 146 mph. In Sussex the highest speed was | :13:29. | :13:42.
121 mph. He speeds are not safe for the driver, passengers and other | :13:43. | :13:49.
road users. We see time and time again the catastrophic results of | :13:50. | :13:59.
high`speed driving. Campaigners say sentences given by the courts do not | :14:00. | :14:05.
represent the danger of the speeds that some more tourists are now | :14:06. | :14:15.

everybody. An awful lot of people will have known the driver of the | :16:01. | :16:07.
car and the passenger. And the children are the most important | :16:08. | :16:12.
thing, the fact that there were two children injured. I am told that | :16:13. | :16:16.
they are making a steady recovery. This is an annual event raising | :16:17. | :16:22.

have spoken to the organiser who says he is devastated by what has | :16:33. | :16:38.
happened. He has spoken to the family of the children. They see | :16:39. | :16:41.
that the children are now no longer in a critical condition. The council | :16:42. | :16:47.

The Government's launched a scheme to tackle the culture | :17:34. | :17:35.
of binge drinking at universities, with a minister today admitting to | :17:36. | :17:38.
this programme that universities haven't done enough in the past. | :17:39. | :17:41.
The University of Brighton is one of seven around the country taking | :17:42. | :17:44.
part in a one year pilot scheme to encourage responsible drinking | :17:45. | :17:47.
Government figures suggest that 27% of young people drink at least six | :17:48. | :17:51.
Ministers say the cost of crime and disorder linked to alcohol abuse | :17:52. | :17:57.
is around ?11 billion a year in England and Wales. | :17:58. | :18:01.
But as John Young discovered for tonight's Special Report | :18:02. | :18:04.
the scheme's aims may prove hard to achieve. | :18:05. | :18:10.
This is what the Government is worried about. Our habit of getting | :18:11. | :18:20.
drunk. Fighting in the street. Neighbours intimidated. This student | :18:21. | :18:25.
who is part of the campaign to change things spoke to us. They | :18:26. | :18:37.
strap bottles of cider to their hands. This is what the Government | :18:38. | :18:48.
wants to encourage more of. The Government describes this as | :18:49. | :18:51.
radical. A | :18:52. | :18:56. |
