special programme in Folkestone Prince Harry came down to open a

:00:21.:00:25.

permanent memorial to the crucial role in the town played in World War

:00:26.:00:32.

I. This site is very special. Millions of servicemen made their

:00:33.:00:36.

journey from Folkestone to the trenches of the Western Front. 0

:00:37.:00:41.

million people came through Folkestone, going to and returning

:00:42.:00:48.

to the Western Front. The ilpact is still being felt today. Manx of you

:00:49.:00:55.

joined in events across the South East. Also tonight, migrants in Cali

:00:56.:01:01.

are given just weeks to leave whether camps are demolished.

:01:02.:01:06.

And police investigating thd Eastbourne Pier fire say thdy're

:01:07.:01:08.

very pleased with the response from a public appeal for help.

:01:09.:01:18.

We have a special live programme CD in Folkestone. Prince Harry came

:01:19.:01:34.

down to dedicate this memorhal arch. The only permanent, new memorial to

:01:35.:01:43.

the World War I centenary. This is the 100th anniversary of thd de

:01:44.:01:48.

World War I broke out. This arch has been paid for by different

:01:49.:01:56.

campaigners. This step short order was the name given to the troops as

:01:57.:02:01.

they marched down to the harbour. 10 million journeys were made between

:02:02.:02:05.

Folkestone and France during the First World War as men and supplies

:02:06.:02:09.

were taking it to and from the Western Front. As well as the

:02:10.:02:12.

dedication by Prince Harry, thousands of people were here to see

:02:13.:02:17.

that and the breed is leading to the harbour and to laying a wre`th to

:02:18.:02:24.

honour those who gave their lives during World War I.

:02:25.:02:37.

Peter Whittlesea reports on an emotional morning for thd town.

:02:38.:02:42.

Today Prince Harry had a du`l role. Officially opening the memorial

:02:43.:02:51.

arch. He led a wreath to those who never returned. The crowds were

:02:52.:02:58.

excited to see his Royal is but mindful this royal occasion was

:02:59.:03:03.

about marking the part Folkdstone played in the Great Wall. Occasions

:03:04.:03:09.

like this, you should look to the people who served in the war lost

:03:10.:03:13.

their lives. It means a gre`t deal. As a family, we are passion`tely

:03:14.:03:20.

involved with anything to do with the war because of our fathdrs part

:03:21.:03:26.

in it. It is very important that this memorial will be user permanent

:03:27.:03:30.

memory and people remember what they stood for. This corporal was

:03:31.:03:37.

marching with his great`grandfather's medals. It was a

:03:38.:03:42.

personal journey. I was fortunate enough to meet my great grandad when

:03:43.:03:47.

I was very little. It is grdat to be here to remember all those who

:03:48.:03:51.

served and lost their lives in the conflict. It is a fantastic honour

:03:52.:03:55.

to be here today and to havd his medals here with

:03:56.:04:03.

marched down the road of remembrance, 100 years ago the order

:04:04.:04:10.

was to step short, to stop them slipping on their hobnailed boots on

:04:11.:04:17.

this steep slope. Until tod`y this was the only memorial to thd tens of

:04:18.:04:21.

thousands of men who left Folkestone for France. It was made frol the

:04:22.:04:26.

granite which paved this ro`d. Its peers and inscription by Tennyson.

:04:27.:04:36.

For those who set up the stdp short charity, this celebration h`s been

:04:37.:04:41.

the climax of four years work. We want to remember all the millions of

:04:42.:04:45.

men and women who passed through Folkestone 100 years ago. Btt we did

:04:46.:04:48.

not have any dream of this dver happening. We have become a national

:04:49.:04:55.

project. As Prince Harry left there was a sense of pride is at last the

:04:56.:04:59.

town had paid tribute to its crucial role in the past. It has bedn an

:05:00.:05:07.

emotional day here in Folkestone. Letters to two with some people who

:05:08.:05:12.

have been involved in getting it organised. You have been involved

:05:13.:05:18.

with this campaign fell on time You designed this magnificent arch.

:05:19.:05:24.

Yes, it is in place after all these years. It existed on my computer

:05:25.:05:30.

screen. Now I can look at it in the flesh. Are you pleased with how it

:05:31.:05:39.

has come out? It has stainldss steel and lights inside it. I think it

:05:40.:05:45.

looks spectacular. It is Duplex stainless steel which means it

:05:46.:05:49.

should last for a 200 years before it needs cleaned, despite the

:05:50.:05:54.

seagulls. I am pleased with the landscaping around it as well. I

:05:55.:06:00.

love the information. I saw a little boy sitting down near and hd said

:06:01.:06:14.

USC `` USB, that is America. I want children to come down and enjoy this

:06:15.:06:20.

environment. Thank you very much. You have been involved with this

:06:21.:06:23.

campaign all the way through as well. How important has tod`y been?

:06:24.:06:33.

Tremayne Disley important. Ht is the centenary. `` tremendously

:06:34.:06:37.

important. Millions of men larched through. It is hugely poign`nt that

:06:38.:06:44.

we remember that. Many of them did not return. They left familhes

:06:45.:06:49.

behind, mothers and children. The loss of life must have been

:06:50.:06:53.

horrendous for the people ldft behind in this country. Thotsands of

:06:54.:06:58.

people came out to watch thd parade today, it was extraordinary. It was.

:06:59.:07:06.

It was marvellous. We had this service March and we had thd

:07:07.:07:09.

civilian march. Lots of people were enjoying it. We had intervidwers

:07:10.:07:15.

speaking to people. The children were amazing. I am glad it has all

:07:16.:07:23.

gone well, I am sorry but wd have to leave it. Thank you for joining us.

:07:24.:07:29.

We will return to the arch when we take a more in`depth look at the

:07:30.:07:32.

role Folkestone played in the First World War.

:07:33.:07:37.

Detectives in Sussex investhgating the fire on Eastbourne Pier say they

:07:38.:07:39.

are very pleased with the response they've had to

:07:40.:07:41.

A large section of the Victorian structure was destroyed

:07:42.:07:45.

in the blaze last week and police announced on Friday that

:07:46.:07:48.

A new week and a fresh crowd of visitors. Far from putting tourists

:07:49.:08:04.

off, this shell has become `n attraction in itself. A lot of

:08:05.:08:07.

people went to come here to see what happened and find out more `bout it.

:08:08.:08:13.

We came down here today and we saw the Eastbourne Pier and it hs very

:08:14.:08:22.

sad. People are curious. Thhs sightseeing business says ntmbers

:08:23.:08:26.

are up. There is a morbid attraction to see something like theirs and we

:08:27.:08:31.

are also in the hate of the season. Eastbourne is popular throughout the

:08:32.:08:36.

summer. New footage emerged from a lifeboat today. The crew melbers

:08:37.:08:42.

helped to fight the fire. When we first turned up, the main arcade was

:08:43.:08:49.

well alight. The flames werd then spreading to this other sidd. Police

:08:50.:08:58.

are now treating it as susphcious. The police said they have rdceived

:08:59.:09:01.

around 40 responses to their appeal for photos and video taking here

:09:02.:09:08.

just before the fire started. They still want more in the hope that one

:09:09.:09:13.

put a graphite they could ghve them a significant lead. Items wdre being

:09:14.:09:18.

removed today as traders trx to salvage what is left. A fund set up

:09:19.:09:22.

by residents has now reached over ?2000.

:09:23.:09:29.

Police hunting a man who left a supermarket security guard with a 10

:09:30.:09:32.

centimetre wound across his stomach have released a CCTV picturd of two

:09:33.:09:35.

The guard chased three people from the Sainsbury's store

:09:36.:09:38.

in Kingsmead Road in Canterbury after an alarm sounded at

:09:39.:09:41.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Brighton

:09:42.:09:48.

at the weekend to celebrate the city's annual gay Pride festival.

:09:49.:09:51.

While much of the event passed off peacefully, Sussex Police made

:09:52.:09:56.

28 arrests ` but are also appealing for witnesses to an assault.

:09:57.:09:59.

Our reporter Piers Hopkirk joins us live from Brighton.

:10:00.:10:04.

Can you tell us what is said to have happened?

:10:05.:10:11.

Three members hacked. One w`s punched unconscious. It happens

:10:12.:10:21.

around five o'clock on Saturday afternoon. According to the police,

:10:22.:10:25.

words had been exchanged between two groups of men which led to `

:10:26.:10:29.

44`year`old man being punchdd and knocked out. When his two friends

:10:30.:10:35.

intervenes, they were also `ttacked and subject to racist and homophobic

:10:36.:10:42.

taunts. Police are looking for information but stressed thhs was an

:10:43.:10:47.

isolated incident. The march passed off peacefully. 100,000 people enjoy

:10:48.:10:53.

the festivities, just 20 arrests. Thank you very much.

:10:54.:10:57.

In other news, authorities in Calais have delayed

:10:58.:10:59.

the clearing of two migrant camps for several weeks ` even though

:11:00.:11:01.

French authorities say they will use the time to try to persuade

:11:02.:11:06.

the migrants to go home, or apply for asylum in France.

:11:07.:11:08.

Last night, tensions in one of the camps led to violent clashes

:11:09.:11:11.

I have from central governmdnt extra powers which will increase

:11:12.:11:26.

surveillance and increase surveillance throughout the night.

:11:27.:11:32.

This is our top story tonight. Prince Harry has unveiled

:11:33.:11:36.

a monument in Folkestone, where millions of soldiers marched to

:11:37.:11:38.

boats taking them across thd Channel The memorial arch was built

:11:39.:11:41.

as part of commemorations m`rking the centenary today of Brit`in's

:11:42.:11:45.

involvement in World War Ond. An electricity link station with

:11:46.:11:50.

a view ` just ?275,000 for the Dungeness property dstate

:11:51.:11:53.

agents call "unique". We will look back at the rule

:11:54.:12:08.

Folkestone played for many. The last time they would ever see Brhtain.

:12:09.:12:13.

it needs quite a bit of work and the surroundings are bldak ` but

:12:14.:12:17.

this small electricity link station at Dungeness has gone on thd market

:12:18.:12:25.

It's a utilitarian architectural gem, and

:12:26.:12:28.

there is planning permission for a four bedroom house but any buyer has

:12:29.:12:34.

got to build it ` and fast, as Jon Hunt reports.

:12:35.:12:38.

It is certainly distinctive, set amidst the fishing cottages and the

:12:39.:12:45.

nuclear power station. Nestling on a match `` National nature reserve.

:12:46.:12:51.

Can you imagine this being xour dream holiday home? Even with its

:12:52.:12:57.

price tag, visitors thought it was good value. Some of these houses

:12:58.:13:03.

here fetch 400,000. These thny cottages. So, it is what yot make of

:13:04.:13:12.

it. I would pay double, the place is so tranquil, it is gorgeous. I have

:13:13.:13:17.

come three times. In my lind of work I were to relax. This buildhng used

:13:18.:13:25.

to house a massive switch which connected and disconnected the

:13:26.:13:29.

electricity grids of France and Britain. Long cables ran from here

:13:30.:13:34.

to Boulogne in France. The switching remained in France `` insidd until

:13:35.:13:41.

it was removed by the National Grid. That is planning permission to

:13:42.:13:46.

convert it into a holiday house One expert believes it could earn half

:13:47.:13:53.

?1 million after that is converted. It seems a bit steep but it is such

:13:54.:13:59.

a unique property. Places lhke this are not around. Hence the price tag.

:14:00.:14:06.

Properties here sell at a premium. This cottage was marketed at a

:14:07.:14:13.

quarter of ?1 million in 2009. People who come here to visht say it

:14:14.:14:21.

is heaven on earth. We return now to the centenary of World War H.

:14:22.:14:28.

In Brighton, wreaths were laid earlier today

:14:29.:14:29.

in Regency Square ` and a bus covered in images of wartime

:14:30.:14:33.

Sussex will run throughout the city for the next four years to try to

:14:34.:14:36.

Poppies have been planted in prominent positions across the Lewes

:14:37.:14:40.

The poppies were sewn in Max as Lewes District Council showed

:14:41.:14:49.

its support for the British Legion's Centenary Poppy Campaign.

:14:50.:14:51.

Among the areas poppies werd planted ` and have now begun to flower `

:14:52.:14:54.

And events are also taking place in Ashford ` a historic

:14:55.:14:58.

World War One tank has been in the town centre for nearly 100 xears.

:14:59.:15:02.

And you've been sending us pictures from the Folkestond

:15:03.:15:06.

Megan Roberts sent us this picture of the memorial arch and

:15:07.:15:12.

Chris Jarvest sent us this picture of veterans on the Leas

:15:13.:15:21.

And Julie Stanley from Dover sent us this photograph

:15:22.:15:25.

of Prince Harry alongside the local MP, Damian Collins.

:15:26.:15:29.

Well, that's it from me herd in the studio, let's cross back to

:15:30.:15:32.

Thank you very much. We are still under the arch here. There hs a huge

:15:33.:15:52.

compass Rose here under the arch which contains the nations who took

:15:53.:15:57.

part in the war, which has some surprising ones like Russia and

:15:58.:16:03.

Nepal. Letters talk to the LP for Folkestone. You were also the

:16:04.:16:08.

chairman of this charity and you were there at the beginning, seven

:16:09.:16:14.

years ago. That's right. We wanted to tell their story of Folkdstone's

:16:15.:16:19.

role in the war and the centenary seem to be the perfect opportunity

:16:20.:16:23.

for that. The project involved a number of events. We are looking to

:16:24.:16:28.

tell the story of the millions of men who came through this arch.

:16:29.:16:34.

Women as well? Yes, women played a vital role in the war effort with

:16:35.:16:39.

factorsies supporting the front line. He worked as nurses. We want

:16:40.:16:44.

their story to be remembered as well. It does not just commdmorate

:16:45.:16:52.

those who made the ultimate sacrifice, it remembers all those

:16:53.:16:57.

who served during the war. On a personal note, what was likd all

:16:58.:17:03.

coming together today? It w`s a member. To remember those who served

:17:04.:17:08.

in the war and the huge number of people who worked on this project

:17:09.:17:15.

can be very proud of it. Let us chat to other people involved in the

:17:16.:17:20.

project. These people are p`rt of a living history group. You are

:17:21.:17:25.

private in the Royal West Kdnt Regiment? I am, yes. I do it to keep

:17:26.:17:33.

alive the memory of members of my family who fought and served in the

:17:34.:17:38.

First World War. This magnificent arch helps to keep their melory

:17:39.:17:43.

alive. I am stepping in thehr footsteps before they went to war.

:17:44.:17:49.

Was it quite an emotional d`y for you today? Absolutely. I have been

:17:50.:17:56.

looking forward to it for a long time. To be involved in this

:17:57.:18:00.

beautiful monuments, bringing their history back, creating 100 xears,

:18:01.:18:07.

remembering those fallen in the great War, I am honoured to be here

:18:08.:18:14.

today. Thank you very much. Folkestone has changed a lot over

:18:15.:18:20.

the years. Back in 1914, it was a very glamorous Place2Be. Thhs spot

:18:21.:18:24.

was regarded as being one of the most wealthy holiday resorts in the

:18:25.:18:30.

whole of Europe. Within months of the outbreak of war, all th`t

:18:31.:18:35.

changed and the town became an enormous army billet. Many of the

:18:36.:18:42.

hotels turned into hospitals and accommodation for soldiers. Sara

:18:43.:18:47.

Smith has looked at the imp`ct of the war of the town.

:18:48.:18:58.

On their way to the front lhne, the last glimpse of friendly territory,

:18:59.:19:03.

a seaside town which would be changed for ever. That summdr of

:19:04.:19:14.

1914, it was a lovely summer, and is as over the past 15 years,

:19:15.:19:18.

Folkestone was very popular with the middle and upper`class to hhs trade.

:19:19.:19:25.

This was the place to be. `` to list trade. This was the place to

:19:26.:19:32.

promenade. The coming years brought dramatic change. Large housds and

:19:33.:19:36.

hotels were requisitions. The grass was turned up. The traffic dscalated

:19:37.:19:46.

beyond any kind of numbers that was known. Hundreds of thousands of

:19:47.:19:49.

troops marching through Folkestone to be disbursed to the conthnent.

:19:50.:19:56.

Troops also coming back. Folkestone had been a garrison town for 20

:19:57.:20:00.

years, but this was on a different scale. Men came from across the

:20:01.:20:06.

Empire to answer the call to fight. The British Army had a big lap and

:20:07.:20:11.

Folkestone was at the dead centre of this map to get the army on the

:20:12.:20:18.

move. The town welcomes the new arrivals, especially the Canadians

:20:19.:20:23.

who were billeted in local homes. After the war, Folkestone would

:20:24.:20:26.

never be the same. Times had changed. We never went back to the

:20:27.:20:32.

posh frocks and the masses of people wandering along the beach. There

:20:33.:20:40.

does remain on a hill overlooking the sea a constant reminder of those

:20:41.:20:43.

men from across the world who never made it home. We have just loved

:20:44.:20:56.

location from the arch to the top of slope roads. You can see it is a

:20:57.:21:00.

steep hill going to enter the harbour. It used to be covered in

:21:01.:21:07.

the annex cobbles. They werd used to make one of the early memorhals You

:21:08.:21:15.

also notice all along the r`ilings, there are thousands of hand`knitted

:21:16.:21:22.

poppies. Quite touching and moving in a strange way because each one of

:21:23.:21:27.

them tells a different storx. Letters talk to someone who can tell

:21:28.:21:35.

us about it. `` let us talk. You live here, don't you? Yes I do. The

:21:36.:21:43.

idea came from research othdrs doing about my great grandfather fought in

:21:44.:21:48.

the First World War. By coincidence I realised he had left from

:21:49.:21:52.

Folkestone so I started crocheting poppies as a small token and then it

:21:53.:21:57.

grew from there. Everyone w`nted to get involved. When you see

:21:58.:22:02.

everybody, you have poppies from all over the world? Yes, becausd I run a

:22:03.:22:11.

network on Facebook, we gendrated information through that and got

:22:12.:22:15.

people from the Netherlands, France and America is sending in poppies.

:22:16.:22:22.

You to carry on, don't you? Yes for sure. `` you want to carry on. How

:22:23.:22:33.

can people get involved? We can send me an e`mail and we will give them

:22:34.:22:40.

information and patterns. Thank you very much. As the parade moved off

:22:41.:22:49.

today, they would have passdd all these poppies and went on to the

:22:50.:22:52.

harbour were a series of spdcial events have been going on. Charlie

:22:53.:22:56.

Rose reports on the people who have been taking part in those. Gather to

:22:57.:23:07.

remember, on a daily will ndver forget. It is a mix of commdmorating

:23:08.:23:14.

and watching English tradithons It is a great show. We also like Prince

:23:15.:23:20.

Harry. I was trying to introduce into my 18`year`old daughter. I

:23:21.:23:25.

could be his new mother`in`law! Any success? He grounds but he was a bit

:23:26.:23:33.

shocked as we screamed, Harry, take her. What was he wearing? A fancy

:23:34.:23:46.

costume and a hat. Acute hat. They were thrilled to see his Roxal who

:23:47.:23:50.

got rockers support wherever you went and one or two bunches of

:23:51.:23:56.

flowers and a proposal of m`rriage shouted from the crowd. Hundreds of

:23:57.:24:01.

balloons were released into the sky, each carrying the name of a

:24:02.:24:07.

fallen soldier. It was from here that 6 million men embarked for the

:24:08.:24:12.

continent not knowing how long they would be there. Many not knowing

:24:13.:24:19.

that they would not return. It has been a very proud day, but `lso a

:24:20.:24:24.

very evocative day. For the people of Folkestone, it is the dax Prince

:24:25.:24:28.

Harry helped them mark 100 xears since the start of World War I.

:24:29.:24:36.

There is the arch, looking magnificent in the sunlight. Rachel

:24:37.:24:45.

is here with us. What is thd weather for the next few days?

:24:46.:24:51.

Today has been a day of sunshine and showers, they held off for when

:24:52.:24:55.

Prince Harry unveiled the arch but we have plenty to come. Temperatures

:24:56.:25:05.

have reached highs of 21 degrees. Or sunshine brought temperaturds of 23

:25:06.:25:10.

degrees. `` more sunshine. Showers were moving to the East this

:25:11.:25:16.

afternoon and they will continue moving East tonight. Clear skies

:25:17.:25:23.

developing. In rural spots ht will feel colder. From tomorrow, plenty
