Major expansion plans for Ndwhaven Port have been proposed that could

It's hoped it will bring thd town a big economic boost

and help secure its cross`channel ferry service to Dieppe.

But some residents have gredted the plans with trepidation, because

the Port's owners are refushng to reopen the town's beach.

a multi`purpose quayside, bringing new business to the town and even

potentially providing a replacement for the current ferry terminal.

New Haven is on its way up `nd the key to that, as always, is `s a

port, it has been ticking over but it does need some money spent on it.

Now we have good plans to m`ke sure we ground at the future in terms of

freight movements. But the proposals are being

overshadowed because the Frdnch company who owns the Port

and surrounding land refuses to reopen the local beach, which was

closed in 2008 on safety grounds. The ensuing legal battle catsed

animosity towards the company and today there was

a mixed reaction to their plans I think the development thex want to

do is very good, but we defhnitely want the beach back, that would be a

good thing. If that could hdlp the local community and the unelployment

that would be very positive. The town is so opposed to them that I

think they are going to havd a bit of a struggle.

But one local councillor believes matters shouldn't be confusdd.

Newhaven Port and Properties won't comment on reopening the be`ch

until a decision is made in the Supreme Court in Novdmber.

Meanwhile, they'll be putting their expansion plans out

Plans to build up to 5,000 homes on a part of the Hoo Peninstla,
