Thank you very much indeed. That is it from Edinburgh | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith. | :00:00. | :00:00.
A Kent teenager pleads guilty to stabbing 17`year`old | :00:07. | :00:12.
We're live in Oxted where her body was found. | :00:13. | :00:17.
A patient talks of how she felt abandoned by a private | :00:18. | :00:21.
I was very distressed and uncomfortable. I was quite scared. | :00:22. | :00:34.
Cut the speed limit ` councillors make | :00:35. | :00:36.
an official call for fresh safety measures on the Sheppey crossing. | :00:37. | :00:44.
Maureen Lipman brings a lifetime of experience to the stage. And Adam | :00:45. | :00:58.
Gemili will be in the studio, fresh from his European championship | :00:59. | :00:59.
triumph. A teenage boy from Kent has today | :01:00. | :01:10.
admitted stabbing Steven Miles pleaded guilty to | :01:11. | :01:14.
the murder of Elizabeth Thomas who is reported to have been | :01:15. | :01:18.
in a relationship with him. Her body was discovered at Miles' | :01:19. | :01:21.
family's flat in Oxted Surrey. At the time of her death, it was | :01:22. | :01:25.
reported that friends claimed Elizabeth Thomas wanted to end her | :01:26. | :01:28.
relationship with Steven Miles. She had just recently joined | :01:29. | :01:31.
Oxted School sixth form, Elizabeth Thomas was 17 when she was | :01:32. | :01:46.
stabbed to death. Today, another teenager, Steven Miles, admitted | :01:47. | :01:51.
killing her. It happened in this flat earlier this year. A death left | :01:52. | :01:56.
the community shocked, her family said their lives have been broken | :01:57. | :02:01.
beyond repair. The news brings home to everyone here the appalling | :02:02. | :02:05.
nature of this tragedy. Our hearts go out to her family and all of | :02:06. | :02:10.
those closely affected by this dreadful news. Elizabeth Thomas's | :02:11. | :02:19.
body was found in the flat on January 24. Steven Miles, then 16, | :02:20. | :02:24.
was arrested at the scene and just over one week later was charged with | :02:25. | :02:29.
her murder. Today he pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on the 2nd of | :02:30. | :02:34.
October. At the time of her death, Elizabeth's family said they had | :02:35. | :02:38.
been overwhelmed by the messages and support they had received from | :02:39. | :02:43.
everyone who knew her. We were all shocked. They were nice family. We | :02:44. | :02:49.
all know each other year. We were devastated for them. It is shocking | :02:50. | :02:56.
it happened around here. I think everyone was shocked. Elizabeth | :02:57. | :03:00.
Thomas had been sitting for her A`levels. Her family said they were | :03:01. | :03:04.
extremely proud of what should achieved and described her as a | :03:05. | :03:06.
kind, caring and loving person. Our reporter Mark Saunders has been | :03:07. | :03:11.
following the story for us Mark, | :03:12. | :03:13.
what have the police been saying? This is where Elizabeth lost her | :03:14. | :03:26.
life, right at the heart of the small team unity. Surrey police | :03:27. | :03:31.
issued a statement. One of the officers said this was a tragic loss | :03:32. | :03:37.
of a young girl and the devastating impact of the incident, which | :03:38. | :03:41.
unfolded, continues to be felt, not just by the family and friends by | :03:42. | :03:46.
the wider community. In a sense, those comments reflected in remarks | :03:47. | :03:51.
by the judge today, he described the circumstances of this murder as | :03:52. | :03:55.
horrific. He did say he would give Steven Miles credit for guilty plea | :03:56. | :04:00.
at this stage. Miles himself is due to be sentenced next month. | :04:01. | :04:03.
A patient has spoken of how she felt abandoned | :04:04. | :04:05.
after being left waiting for an ambulance for almost eight hours. | :04:06. | :04:08.
Marion Ham was due to be taken from hospital in East Grinstead to | :04:09. | :04:11.
Pembury, by the privately run NSL transport service.The | :04:12. | :04:14.
service has already faced criticism following an inspection earlier this | :04:15. | :04:19.
Recovering from an ankle operation, it was an infection which Turk | :04:20. | :04:39.
Marion Ham back to hospital and doctors gave her an assessment. She | :04:40. | :04:48.
thought she would be for `` therefore an hour but she was there | :04:49. | :04:54.
for longer. I was very uncomfortable and distressed, scared of what might | :04:55. | :05:02.
not be going on my leg. It got to 9pm in evening and I was told the | :05:03. | :05:07.
unit shuts down by 10pm. We haven't heard from anyone. NSL when the | :05:08. | :05:15.
contract to run non`evidence the ambulances. Within days hundreds of | :05:16. | :05:20.
patients complained they have been left stranded. The Care Quality | :05:21. | :05:24.
Commission reported on a series of key failures. In July two report | :05:25. | :05:29.
said there were still problems. NSL said they have improved but accept | :05:30. | :05:35.
this case doesn't that. Most people would see that as an acceptable. I | :05:36. | :05:40.
can assure all patients are important to us. The group now runs | :05:41. | :05:46.
the contract. Their chief officer said the service received by Marion | :05:47. | :05:52.
Ham was an acceptable. While it had improved over the past year, it | :05:53. | :05:56.
still wasn't good enough. The contract of NSL is up in June 2016. | :05:57. | :06:02.
Some believe it is time to ditch contracting out the service | :06:03. | :06:06.
altogether. It is when ambulance services run by the private sector | :06:07. | :06:11.
which have ballooned under David Cameron. It hits home that they | :06:12. | :06:16.
should be about public service to people like Marion Ham, not about | :06:17. | :06:22.
profits and given second`rate service. Marion Ham was taken in an | :06:23. | :06:26.
emergency ambulance. NSL said they have spoken to her and will learn | :06:27. | :06:28.
from what she has taught them. In a moment the pieces of art that | :06:29. | :06:46.
could give a clue to Hastings's history. | :06:47. | :06:50.
There are demands for a reduction in the speed limit on the | :06:51. | :06:53.
Sheppey Crossing in Kent in a bid to save lives. | :06:54. | :06:56.
Councillors voted last night to ask the Highways Agency to cut it | :06:57. | :06:59.
It follows a 150 vehicle pile`up a year ago and a fatal crash in July. | :07:00. | :07:04.
A crossing that simply isn't safe, according to some councillors. | :07:05. | :07:12.
They point to last year's huge pile`up. | :07:13. | :07:14.
Dozens injured, speed a factor but no matrix signs | :07:15. | :07:17.
Followed by a crash in July that killed a mother and son. | :07:18. | :07:23.
The cause of that is still under investigation | :07:24. | :07:25.
but the family of Deborah Roberts and eight`year`old Marshall say | :07:26. | :07:28.
In my eyes it is like a legacy kind of thing. | :07:29. | :07:36.
If measures are made and followed through with, | :07:37. | :07:40.
And now councillors, following a vote last night, will finally have | :07:41. | :07:46.
a chance to put their case for a reduction in the speed limit | :07:47. | :07:50.
They were putting their heads in the sand to some extent. | :07:51. | :07:56.
The bridge is constantly being close. | :07:57. | :07:58.
People are breaking down and there has been a fatal accident. | :07:59. | :08:03.
They have taken one year almost to come to that conclusion. | :08:04. | :08:09.
I think that is because of the pressure we put on them. | :08:10. | :08:12.
Some bridges, such as those at Dartford, | :08:13. | :08:14.
The Highways Agency says each is assessed on its own merit. | :08:15. | :08:19.
Many believe the onus must be on drivers driving safely and there | :08:20. | :08:23.
are calls for more evidence regarding the Sheppey crossing. | :08:24. | :08:27.
I just think it is rather presumptuous of councillors to | :08:28. | :08:30.
think, without any reference whatsoever to the people who are | :08:31. | :08:34.
actually making the decision, that the answer must be only 50 mph. | :08:35. | :08:40.
I'm not against it, but I think there are other options. | :08:41. | :08:43.
Deborah Roberts' sister says no other family should suffer | :08:44. | :08:46.
Otherwise, my days would be crying all the time. | :08:47. | :08:59.
I try and block things out and try not to think of what has | :09:00. | :09:02.
happened, but at the same time you can't stop thinking of them. | :09:03. | :09:07.
Since the opening in 2006, the Highways Agency has insisted | :09:08. | :09:10.
Well, let's cross live to Simon Jones who's at the crossing now ` | :09:11. | :09:21.
Simon what's the likelihood of this speed limit happening? | :09:22. | :09:29.
That a decision will be made by the highways agency. They say they have | :09:30. | :09:36.
already logged into last year's huge crash but put it down to fog and | :09:37. | :09:40.
drivers not driving appropriately rather than any problems with the | :09:41. | :09:45.
crossing itself. They say they can't comment on the fatal crash because | :09:46. | :09:51.
investigations are still ongoing. Councillors as well as wanting a | :09:52. | :09:55.
reduction in the speed limit one cameras. They'll get their to make | :09:56. | :10:01.
their case in the next couple of weeks `` one cameras `` want | :10:02. | :10:11.
cameras. An arsonist who set fire to | :10:12. | :10:19.
his flat after being served an eviction notice laughed | :10:20. | :10:22.
when he was told he'd almost trapped his upstairs neighbour | :10:23. | :10:24.
and her two children in the blaze. 22`year`old Jake Walters was jailed | :10:25. | :10:27.
for 30 months today after he pleaded Maidstone Crown Court heard he | :10:28. | :10:30.
started the fire in a revenge attack after being told | :10:31. | :10:33.
he would have to leave his home in A second man has been arrested | :10:34. | :10:36.
in connection with historic abuse allegations at Boris Johnson's | :10:37. | :10:40.
former prep school in Sussex. The 64`year`old man, who hasn't been | :10:41. | :10:43.
named, was questioned by police in Brighton on suspicion of indecent | :10:44. | :10:45.
assault and gross indecency. The former headmaster of | :10:46. | :10:48.
Ashdown House Prep School, Clive Williams, was arrested | :10:49. | :10:51.
and bailed earlier this year. A man has been arrested on suspicion | :10:52. | :10:53.
of murder after a pensioner was The 32`year`old, from the town, | :10:54. | :10:56.
was held after the discovery of the 73`year`old's body yesterday | :10:57. | :11:02.
afternoon. Well, let's cross live to | :11:03. | :11:06.
our reporter Lucinda Adam. Lucinda, police said the dead man | :11:07. | :11:10.
was discovered in the property? They say the body of a 73`year`old | :11:11. | :11:20.
man was found here in the bedroom of his home, on the edge of the estate | :11:21. | :11:27.
here. Officers were called at 3pm last afternoon but through today | :11:28. | :11:31.
forensic teams have been continuing their investigations, and this | :11:32. | :11:34.
afternoon a body was taken away from the property. This is a row of | :11:35. | :11:39.
bungalows for the elderly. Police said it don't think this was a | :11:40. | :11:47.
random attack but there were 30 `` but the man arrested in connection | :11:48. | :11:55.
was known to the victim. There were a lot of police officers here. I do | :11:56. | :12:00.
realise it was a murder. We would see him and waved to him. He would | :12:01. | :12:11.
way back. He was a nice man. The victim hasn't been named but other | :12:12. | :12:14.
neighbours describe an outgoing and friendly manner, often seen out and | :12:15. | :12:20.
about on a scooter. The man suspected of us made it is being | :12:21. | :12:29.
kept in custody. This is tonight's top story. A teenager has pleaded | :12:30. | :12:34.
guilty to the murder of a 17`year`old girl. Steven Miles | :12:35. | :12:38.
starved Elizabeth Thomas to death at his family's flat. Also. A woman of | :12:39. | :12:47.
many talents. Maureen Lipman talks about love, betrayal and retribution | :12:48. | :12:53.
later in the programme. And the art of creating a piece of televisual | :12:54. | :13:00.
history. We meet the man behind many creations. And it seems summer is | :13:01. | :13:05.
having a last farewell. Join me later to see if it will last. | :13:06. | :13:12.
The charity restoring Hastings Pier is trying to solve the mystery | :13:13. | :13:15.
of three paintings, which may hold vital clues to its past. | :13:16. | :13:21.
The artworks, which were originally donated to | :13:22. | :13:23.
a boys club and are now hanging in the Conquest Hospital, are believed | :13:24. | :13:26.
It's costing ?14 million to rebuild the pier after a fire in 2010, | :13:27. | :13:31.
with ?11.4 million coming from lottery funding and ?590,000 | :13:32. | :13:33.
Juliette Parkin has tonight's special report. | :13:34. | :13:51.
Hanging in a corridor in a busy hospital. I'll paintings of a time | :13:52. | :13:59.
when Hastings Pier was a place to be seen. Who witnessed and recorded the | :14:00. | :14:08.
scenes, nobody knows. In 1992, they were given by the close to the | :14:09. | :14:14.
hospital, to be shown on the wards. We don't have any idea who painted | :14:15. | :14:18.
them and that is what we are trying to find out. There is no signature | :14:19. | :14:22.
on them and no record of where they came from. Today, construction | :14:23. | :14:30.
workers rebuilding the structure and cutting free the chains of a | :14:31. | :14:36.
devastating past. Hastings Pier close because of fears it have come | :14:37. | :14:42.
and save. 95% was destroyed in an arson attack. Then in 2012, the | :14:43. | :14:47.
government confirmed the purchase order from the owners could go | :14:48. | :14:51.
ahead, leading to its restoration. Now preserving the past is equally | :14:52. | :14:57.
important. Built in 1870 2,000 flocked here in its heyday. Scenes | :14:58. | :15:08.
like this wouldn't greeted people. We are taking copies of material, | :15:09. | :15:14.
and we will photograph them and save them into a digital archive, which | :15:15. | :15:20.
will be used in our interpretation. The charity is asking anyone with | :15:21. | :15:26.
photos, objects or memories of Hastings Pier to get in touch, and | :15:27. | :15:30.
there is certainly no shortage of those. You can see the fishermen off | :15:31. | :15:37.
the pier. My mother and father used to come here. The slot machines with | :15:38. | :15:46.
old fashioned ones. It is hoping it will open next summer. A new | :15:47. | :15:50.
restaurant and entertainment space on its decks. There are parts of | :15:51. | :15:55.
that history people would rather forget, moments like these certainly | :15:56. | :15:57.
not among them. That is a mystery. She's the star of stage and screen ` | :15:58. | :16:07.
and to many she's best remembered for the BT advert, consoling her | :16:08. | :16:10.
grandson who's failed his exams. Well, | :16:11. | :16:15.
now she's starring in a drama at the Theatre Royal in Brighton, in a play | :16:16. | :16:18.
with two love stories at its heart. Miranda Schunke went | :16:19. | :16:23.
along to meet her. Treading the boards. That his/her | :16:24. | :16:38.
real love. Indeed. Maureen Lipman has decided to take this show on the | :16:39. | :16:45.
road after a successful run `` that is her real love. I spoke to her | :16:46. | :16:51.
today. There was so much to talk about. She says she still get | :16:52. | :16:56.
nervous when she still get nervous when she's about considers herself | :16:57. | :17:10.
as just another jobbing actress. Who could forget those classic adverts? | :17:11. | :17:29.
Now I can look back on them with a sense of neutrality, but at the time | :17:30. | :17:34.
I was trying to be a versatile actress. Now I was a grandmother. | :17:35. | :17:40.
Now, I am a grandmother, it doesn't matter. But it was playing and which | :17:41. | :17:52.
made her a household name, well beyond her comic prowess. They do | :17:53. | :17:57.
tend to be a lot of Jewish agony and which is interesting. I don't know | :17:58. | :18:13.
why that is. It was a good show `` agony aunt. | :18:14. | :18:23.
The last time I was here was to do two weeks. It must have been in | :18:24. | :18:34.
1988. Aside from the show I am doing now, that was the best thing I did. | :18:35. | :18:39.
Let's talk about the play. It is a romantic thriller. Are you a fan? I | :18:40. | :18:46.
ballroom dance which is only one minute long but it took a lot of | :18:47. | :18:52.
work. We still practice that night. And he is very musical. I am very | :18:53. | :19:00.
good at making everything look it is his fault. As well as dancing, | :19:01. | :19:05.
there's plenty of love, betrayal and retribution keeping the audience | :19:06. | :19:09.
gripped in this show. If you get along, it is on here at the Theatre | :19:10. | :19:12.
Royal until Saturday. Now, he's got one of | :19:13. | :19:21.
the biggest smiles in British sport That's because Kent sprinter | :19:22. | :19:23.
Adam Gemili has enjoyed easily his most successful season since | :19:24. | :19:27.
swapping football for athletics. He starred | :19:28. | :19:33.
at this summer's Commonwealth Games and just over three weeks ago won | :19:34. | :19:35.
gold at the European Championships. I'm delighted to say Adam's with us | :19:36. | :19:41.
now, but before we talk to him, let's take a little look at some | :19:42. | :19:44.
of his recent achievements. We were talking about your smile but | :19:45. | :20:40.
you had a grimace on your face when you are watching that. Why do find | :20:41. | :20:47.
it so hard to watch. I find it embarrassing to watch yourself | :20:48. | :20:51.
racing and on the TV. It is a bit embarrassing for me to see myself. | :20:52. | :20:56.
It is brave of you to come into a TV studio. You are also shy about | :20:57. | :21:02.
showing off your medals. You are shown for us but very show them off | :21:03. | :21:07.
at home. This is the gold. This is a 200 metres. Then another gold in the | :21:08. | :21:16.
100 metres. This is the 200 metres gold and the silver at the | :21:17. | :21:22.
Commonwealth Games. You were not in front of your home crowd. How was | :21:23. | :21:29.
that? Mental. It was good to me. There was a lot of anticipation as | :21:30. | :21:35.
to whether the English athletes are going to get a good reputation at | :21:36. | :21:40.
Scotland. It was great. I felt like a British athlete competing in | :21:41. | :21:44.
Britain, rather than an English athlete in Scotland. You have 2 | :21:45. | :21:50.
major target the next summer. One is a world championships, the other is | :21:51. | :21:54.
finishing your degree. The Will Sharman ships are in Beijing next | :21:55. | :22:02.
year and that coincides with my final year of university `` the | :22:03. | :22:07.
world Championships. I have the jungle that around and try and run | :22:08. | :22:11.
fast and compete with the likes of the same bolt and the rest of the | :22:12. | :22:17.
world. You have done well because your time in the metres, you are | :22:18. | :22:24.
part of an elite group of athletes. All in all, in Britain it is only | :22:25. | :22:31.
myself and John Regis Rab and 20 seconds. In the world it must be | :22:32. | :22:42.
less than 50 people `` John Regis, who have broken 20 seconds. When you | :22:43. | :22:50.
have some more gold medals, if you could come back in. We will have you | :22:51. | :22:56.
on any time. Thank you. Good luck with the degree as well. | :22:57. | :23:01.
A Sussex fine art sculptor, who helped create | :23:02. | :23:03.
the 1980s character Max Headroom, is showing some of his new work at an | :23:04. | :23:07.
John Humphreys' work in film and television includes | :23:08. | :23:15.
Alien Autopsy, Doctor Who and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. | :23:16. | :23:17.
Piers Hopkirk went along to meet him. | :23:18. | :23:20.
He's the face behind the faces, which made us hide | :23:21. | :23:23.
When we first started working on Doctor Who it was exciting, | :23:24. | :23:32.
To go onto the set at the BBC, with a monster you created, | :23:33. | :23:38.
He may be a fine arts sculptor, but his work is just as likely to grace | :23:39. | :23:45.
From bringing the imagination of Roald Dahl to life in Charlie | :23:46. | :23:57.
to creating '80s cult hero Max Headroom. | :23:58. | :24:09.
John may not be a household name, but his work is known | :24:10. | :24:16.
This is arguably John's most infamous piece of work, the Roswell | :24:17. | :24:31.
alien, star of movies and a million conspiracy theories the world over. | :24:32. | :24:34.
The alien was created by John from film footage, | :24:35. | :24:36.
supposedly of an autopsy of an extra terrestrial, a hoax which to this | :24:37. | :24:40.
When you make something that half the world has seen, | :24:41. | :24:49.
then you have got to look back and think that is a job well done. | :24:50. | :24:55.
John's sculptures form the centrepiece of the September | :24:56. | :24:58.
Having someone of John's stature with is exciting | :24:59. | :25:06.
His work stretching the human, form and with it the imagination. | :25:07. | :25:31.
That was great but weird. Let's check the weather. Plenty of | :25:32. | :25:41.
sunshine now. This is a picture of a family fishing in west Sussex by the | :25:42. | :25:48.
weekend. I wonder if they caught anything. If you have any photos, we | :25:49. | :25:52.
would love to see them. You can e`mail them to us or get in touch at | :25:53. | :25:58.
our Facebook or Twitter pages. Lots of lovely weather, worth last? We | :25:59. | :26:05.
have this area of high pressure. That will stay with us `` will it | :26:06. | :26:12.
last? There is plenty of sunshine over the next couple of days. We | :26:13. | :26:17.
should be staying dry and some sunshine, particularly by the | :26:18. | :26:21.
afternoons. Clearer skies at night mean it will be cooler. In the towns | :26:22. | :26:26.
and cities, temperatures down to 11 degrees but across the country | :26:27. | :26:31.
temperatures in low single figures. So temperatures this afternoon | :26:32. | :26:34.
Company in the top teams, with highs of 17 degrees `` come to be in the | :26:35. | :26:47.
top teams. You may see some mist and fog around is. Perhaps 11 or 12 | :26:48. | :26:52.
degrees in cities. Cooler and more real spots, seven or 8 degrees. | :26:53. | :26:58.
Clear skies mean sunshine from the word go. Any mist or fog should burn | :26:59. | :27:03.
back quickly and by the afternoon variable amounts of cloud, but | :27:04. | :27:09.
mostly settled and bright. Temperatures of 90 degrees. A little | :27:10. | :27:13.
bit cooler on the coast, 17 or 18 degrees. It'll feel warm still. More | :27:14. | :27:19.
the same tomorrow night. Settled, clearer skies and winds. The chance | :27:20. | :27:25.
of some rain and drizzle weather cloudy get fit, but over the next | :27:26. | :27:29.
couple of days it'll be staying settled. Warm sunshine with | :27:30. | :27:31.
temperatures in the top. Prince Harry has challenged them - | :27:32. | :27:56.
now they will challenge each other, more than | :27:57. | :27:57.
400 international competitors. No strangers to battle, | :27:58. | :28:02.
all have served their country. Prince Harry has challenged them - | :28:03. | :28:06.
