Gatwick misses out, sparking delight from environmental | :00:00. | :00:00.
But as the decision splits politicians, the airport bosses vow | :00:07. | :00:12.
We'll be live at Gatwick with the latest. | :00:13. | :00:17.
And, how the Born Free Foundation is to benefit from a new pl`y | :00:18. | :00:20.
in Kent, created by Warhorsd author Michael Morpurgo. | :00:21. | :00:25.
And after some foggy starts, we ve got a largely dry couple of days, | :00:26. | :00:29.
Gatwick Airport says the fight for expansion is far from over, | :00:30. | :00:47.
despite the Government's decision to back building | :00:48. | :00:50.
Those in charge at the Sussdx airport say they're ready to provide | :00:51. | :00:57.
a Plan B and build a second runway in Sussex if the plans | :00:58. | :01:00.
But as Charlie Rose reports, for campaigners across the | :01:01. | :01:05.
south-east, today's announcdment came as a huge relief. | :01:06. | :01:11.
Gathered round for the big announcement. | :01:12. | :01:14.
We believe that the expansion of Heathrow Airport and | :01:15. | :01:17.
But when the Transport Secretary finally | :01:18. | :01:21.
made his statement in the Commons, there was no celebration from these | :01:22. | :01:23.
The campaign has been long and hard, and we have been | :01:24. | :01:30.
fighting a very, very big corporation who have been spending | :01:31. | :01:32.
But what about the jobs that would have come with a | :01:33. | :01:38.
Gatwick has offered jobs out to people | :01:39. | :01:43.
They can apply for those jobs, if need be, | :01:44. | :01:47.
and Gatwick still find it | :01:48. | :01:49.
necessary to bring in people from Essex | :01:50. | :01:51.
because there aren't enough of | :01:52. | :01:52.
their house was in line for compulsory purchasing if | :01:53. | :01:57.
We feel happy but we're not sure that Gatwick won't come | :01:58. | :02:03.
They said, at lunchtime, if all fails at Heathrow | :02:04. | :02:11.
and they can't get it through because of the legalities, | :02:12. | :02:13.
But over in the industrial dstate, opinions weren't so one-siddd. | :02:14. | :02:19.
This business distributes p`rts for coffee machines and relhes on | :02:20. | :02:22.
I'm a little bit disappointed, to be honest. | :02:23. | :02:26.
I was quite excited about a second runway at Gatwick. | :02:27. | :02:30.
I thought it would bring quhte a bit of extra trade, more opporttnities. | :02:31. | :02:35.
We actually relocated to Crawley because of the | :02:36. | :02:38.
I thought that could have brought something a bit better for ts. | :02:39. | :02:44.
Today, Chris Grayling descrhbed the decision as truly momentous | :02:45. | :02:47.
Gatwick Airport said it was not the right answer for Britain. | :02:48. | :03:01.
MPs will vote on today's decision and these campaigners over the next | :03:02. | :03:08.
12 months won't be resting on their laurels. | :03:09. | :03:09.
Well, Chrissie Reidy has been following the issue | :03:10. | :03:11.
And it's divided MPs not just on a national scale, | :03:12. | :03:16.
It has. One MP, Zac Goldsmith, has even resigned over today's decision. | :03:17. | :03:34.
MPs in the south-east remain divided. Henry Smith welcomdd | :03:35. | :03:40.
expansion at Heathrow. The LP for Eastbourne it says a third runway at | :03:41. | :03:44.
Heathrow is unrealistic and tonight she told BBC south-east she will | :03:45. | :03:46.
continue campaigning for Gatwick. There are real doubts around just | :03:47. | :03:48.
how deliverable Heathrow is. I know it came through | :03:49. | :03:50.
as the strongest choice in the Davies commission, | :03:51. | :03:52.
the commission which also s`id Gatwick was a very credible choice, | :03:53. | :03:54.
but whatever the advantages, whatever the perceived benefits | :03:55. | :03:57.
whether it be jobs or connections, all of this has nothing | :03:58. | :04:00.
if it can't be delivered. Gatwick bosses say they will simply | :04:01. | :04:14.
take stock of today's decishon and whatever the eventual outcole, they | :04:15. | :04:21.
remain ready and could deliver by 2025. Thank you. | :04:22. | :04:23.
More than 5,000 999 calls to the ambulance service ard to be | :04:24. | :04:26.
investigated to see if any patients were harmed by problems | :04:27. | :04:28.
The South East Coast Ambulance service, which is currently | :04:29. | :04:32.
in special measures, has begun the review after problems | :04:33. | :04:35.
with its call handling systdm, which is supposed to accurately | :04:36. | :04:38.
locate the nearest defibrillator when a patient may be | :04:39. | :04:41.
Extra security measures and travel restrictions have been annotnced | :04:42. | :04:48.
for Lewes on Bonfire Night in 11 days' time. | :04:49. | :04:52.
This year, the event falls on a Saturday night | :04:53. | :04:54.
and coincides with a rail strike by the RMT Union on Southern Rail. | :04:55. | :04:58.
No trains will stop at Lewes from midday and there'll be several | :04:59. | :05:02.
Health professionals missed opportunities to help | :05:03. | :05:09.
a journalist from East Sussdx who took her own life, | :05:10. | :05:13.
Daily Mail advice columnist Sally Brampton had spoken ott | :05:14. | :05:18.
publicly about her long-running battle with depression, | :05:19. | :05:21.
and also wrote a memoir abott her struggle with the condition. | :05:22. | :05:25.
The coroner said he was sathsfied that she wanted to walk into the sea | :05:26. | :05:29.
Nafisa, Ms Brampton had been referred to local mental | :05:30. | :05:38.
health services for help, but she didn't actually get it? | :05:39. | :05:46.
Yes, the inquest heard that in March she had been in touch with ` private | :05:47. | :05:53.
psychiatrist and a GP but she hadn't been contacted by the mental health | :05:54. | :05:59.
services as agreed. Not even after she contacted her GP again ` month | :06:00. | :06:03.
later. Another referral was made about her full details at word | :06:04. | :06:07.
shared with the relevant services. That included a letter from her | :06:08. | :06:11.
psychiatrist saying that shd was having stronger suicidal thoughts. | :06:12. | :06:15.
Today, the assistant coroner said that he felt there was a missed | :06:16. | :06:25.
opportunity to help her in Larch but that we don't know whether that | :06:26. | :06:27.
missed opportunity would have made a difference and change the ottcome. | :06:28. | :06:29.
says changes have been made and says changes have been made and | :06:30. | :06:32.
lessons learned as a result of her death. Thank you. | :06:33. | :06:34.

Stuart King was just 22 when he was ordered to take part | :06:41. | :06:43.
After the war he founded a charity, Mission Aviation Fellowship, | :06:44. | :06:47.
which is now the world's largest humanitarian airline. | :06:48. | :06:51.
When we got there, it was ftll of naval ships firing shells, | :06:52. | :06:56.
of enemy and allied planes fighting, balloons of smoke and it was pretty | :06:57. | :07:03.
It's really amazing that after all these years there's this | :07:04. | :07:12.
amazing recognition with such a high honour. | :07:13. | :07:18.
The Born Free Foundation grdw out of an iconic film, | :07:19. | :07:22.
which created a legacy of protecting animals around the world. | :07:23. | :07:25.
The film, telling the story of a lion cub called Elsa, | :07:26. | :07:28.
The actors involved - Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna - | :07:29. | :07:33.

It now raises almost ?4 million a year | :07:38. | :07:40.
Now a new children's play, called Running Wild, | :07:41. | :07:44.
written by Warhorse creator Michael Morpurgo, is about to take | :07:45. | :07:47.
to the stage in Canterbury to benefit the charity. | :07:48. | :07:53.
You'd be forgiven for thinkhng it's the real thing. | :07:54. | :07:58.
Luna the elephant is one of the extraordinary | :07:59. | :08:00.
puppets brought to life in the stage show Running Whld. | :08:01. | :08:04.
It's based on a true story about an elephant who saved | :08:05. | :08:07.
a little girl's life during the Tsunami that hit | :08:08. | :08:10.
I read that and thought it was wonderful. | :08:11. | :08:17.
And then I thought, well, h`ng on, what's that child going to do | :08:18. | :08:20.
when she or he got into the jungle, what sort of | :08:21. | :08:23.
Maybe there is a story you could write which could be | :08:24. | :08:28.
set differently, become something relevant to today. | :08:29. | :08:34.
The production, which arrivds at the Marlowe Theatre in | :08:35. | :08:37.

The show will support the Born Free Foundation's global | :08:57. | :09:02.
They deserve to live the life that nature intended. | :09:03. | :09:10.
We can't just take over all their homes | :09:11. | :09:13.
and go trophy hunting every five minutes. | :09:14. | :09:15.
Just respect them and love them and admire them. | :09:16. | :09:20.
Theatre fans will no doubt of this emotional | :09:21. | :09:23.
