Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's | :00:01. | :00:04.
programme: Hundreds pay their respects to a | :00:04. | :00:14.
Royal Marine - a fantastic husband and an incredible father. LEA any | :00:14. | :00:21.
the greatest bits for anyone could ever wish all, -- he gave me the | :00:21. | :00:25.
greatest gift so that anyone could ever wish for. | :00:25. | :00:29.
Life in prison for three men who conspired to murder a taxi driver | :00:29. | :00:31.
over a property dispute. 100 years since the Royal Flying | :00:31. | :00:36.
Corps was formed - we pay tribute to those magnificent men. | :00:36. | :00:40.
And a final wash and brush up - we meet the Grand National dark horse | :00:40. | :00:48.
in the running to make the ultimate tribute. I did not achieve or | :00:48. | :00:52.
winning the Grand National as a jockey and it would be fantastic if | :00:52. | :00:58.
I can do it as a trainer. I am sure this year we are getting a bit of | :00:58. | :01:06.
"He was a fantastic husband and an incredible father." Just one of the | :01:06. | :01:09.
tributes paid to Sergeant Luke Taylor from Bournemouth who was | :01:09. | :01:11.
killed in Afghanistan last month. The Royal Marine's funeral took | :01:11. | :01:14.
place in Christchurch today. Before the service, the funeral cortege | :01:14. | :01:17.
passed through the High Street, allowing the public to pay their | :01:17. | :01:23.
respects. Roger Finn was there. As the coffin came down | :01:23. | :01:31.
Christchurch High Street, so too did a wave of applause. Sergeant | :01:31. | :01:35.
Luke Taylor was just 33 years old when he was killed. He had been a | :01:35. | :01:44.
Royal Marine for 50 years, part of that working in intelligence. -- 15 | :01:44. | :01:47.
years. He had been fighting in Afghanistan just four weeks when a | :01:47. | :01:50.
rogue Afghan army soldier shot him dead at the gates into the British | :01:50. | :01:53.
base at Lashkar Gah. Hundreds came to this morning's funeral service, | :01:53. | :01:55.
filling Christchurch Priory. Amongst them many colleagues from | :01:55. | :02:04.
the Royal Marines. And, following the coffin in, Luke Taylor's widow, | :02:04. | :02:11.
Nikki, holding the hand of their four year-old son, Roan. Sergeant | :02:11. | :02:18.
Tyler was quite a remarkable character. He was full of energy, a | :02:18. | :02:21.
great drive, great passion in all that he did and he was very much a | :02:21. | :02:27.
family man, devoted to his wife, Nikki, and certainly to his son. A | :02:27. | :02:30.
fantastic father. The congregation heard colleagues describe Luke as | :02:31. | :02:33.
bursting with enthusiasm, brave, loyal, passionate and great to have | :02:33. | :02:43.
:02:43. | :02:43. | ||
around. And then his widow stepped up to make her tribute. Luke was | :02:43. | :02:51.
and always will be the love of my life, my best friend. My soul mate. | :02:51. | :02:54.
He gave me the greatest gifts that anyone could ever wish for - his | :02:55. | :02:57.
love, his devotion, his laughter, and our beautiful son, who he doted | :02:58. | :03:06.
on completely. After the service, a guard of 12 Royal Marines performed | :03:06. | :03:16.
:03:16. | :03:35. | ||
a traditional honour for a fallen It has been described as nothing | :03:35. | :03:43.
less than attempted execution -- attempted execution, described by a | :03:43. | :03:47.
judge who handed down life sentences to three men who murdered | :03:47. | :03:57.
:03:57. | :03:58. | ||
a taxi driver. One man higher at two are others to murder him. | :03:58. | :04:01.
A quiet residential street where his father of three was gunned down | :04:01. | :04:08.
and left for dead. His three would- be killers, these three men, are | :04:08. | :04:15.
tonight starting live attendances. Mr Hussein would like to find | :04:15. | :04:18.
everyone who has supported himself and his family through this | :04:18. | :04:21.
horrific event. The family is pleased to see that justice has | :04:21. | :04:27.
been done. The attempt on Mr Hussein's live came after a | :04:27. | :04:32.
protracted feud between farmers in Pakistan, and an argument over a | :04:32. | :04:38.
house had already left for one of Mr Hussein's relatives dead and Mr | :04:38. | :04:45.
Hughes said's nephew in jail. It was an autumn night when Mr Hussain | :04:45. | :04:50.
came home from work. He walked towards the front door and was shot | :04:50. | :04:55.
three times. He told the court that he heard a noise like fireworks and | :04:55. | :05:00.
felt a burning in his chest. As he fell to the ground, he looked up | :05:00. | :05:05.
and saw a figure in dark clothing, pointing a handgun at him. After | :05:05. | :05:12.
the shooting, the two men torched their stolen car but the attempt to | :05:12. | :05:16.
cover their tracks failed. There was lots of circumstantial evidence. | :05:16. | :05:21.
We had a numberplates that had been traced to a manufacturer in | :05:21. | :05:28.
Birmingham and that led us on to the two men. When we looked at the | :05:28. | :05:33.
phone records, they lead us back to the family dispute. The Hussain | :05:33. | :05:38.
family did not want to appear on camera. Police still fear they | :05:38. | :05:45.
could be reprisals. In sentencing, all three defendants to live in | :05:45. | :05:51.
prison and with a ten-and-a-half year minimum sentence, the judge | :05:51. | :05:59.
said that this was nothing less than an attempted execution. As one | :05:59. | :06:03.
man was led from the dock, he shouted, thank you very much. | :06:03. | :06:06.
A Southampton court had to be clear this morning during a hearing over | :06:06. | :06:10.
the alleged murder of 22 year-old Jamie Dack. His badly burned body | :06:10. | :06:13.
was found by fire crews on Easter Sunday in an industrial bin. Three | :06:13. | :06:16.
men and one woman are charged with murder, false imprisonment and | :06:16. | :06:20.
conspiracy to rob. Catharina Moh has the story. | :06:20. | :06:22.
Appearing at Southampton Magistrates' today, Ryan Woodmansey, | :06:22. | :06:25.
Andrew Dwyer-Skeats, Lee Nicholls and Donna Chalk, all aged between | :06:25. | :06:33.
20 and 31 years old, charged with the murder of Jamie Dack. The 22 | :06:33. | :06:36.
year-old's body was found on Sunday after fire crews were called to the | :06:37. | :06:41.
Empress Road Industrial Estate. As Donna Chalk and Ryan Woodmansey | :06:41. | :06:44.
were led into court, they waved at the public gallery, which remained | :06:44. | :06:48.
silent. The defendants spoke only to confirm their names, addresses | :06:48. | :06:53.
and dates of birth. The prosecution told the hearing Mr Dack was | :06:53. | :06:56.
kidnapped, held at an address in Southampton and attacked with a | :06:56. | :07:03.
baseball bat. The next day he was stabbed to death, put in a bin and | :07:03. | :07:07.
set on fire. As the defendants were led out, a member of the public | :07:07. | :07:10.
shouted at one set of them and the court's public gallery was | :07:10. | :07:14.
immediately cleared. The three men face an additional count of causing | :07:14. | :07:19.
grievous bodily harm. All four have been remanded in custody to appear | :07:19. | :07:28.
at Winchester Crown Court on Monday. Police are appealing for help to | :07:28. | :07:31.
trace a man suspected of being involved in a fight on a street in | :07:31. | :07:34.
Waterlooville, which led to a man's death. Police were called to Dove | :07:35. | :07:38.
Close at 5:30am this morning. A 20 year-old man was taken to hospital | :07:38. | :07:41.
where he was pronounced dead. Forensic examinations of the scene | :07:41. | :07:44.
are taking place and police are trying to track down a suspect. | :07:44. | :07:46.
They are appealing for any information that will help them | :07:46. | :07:54.
locate 28 year-old Sean Thomas How much can you tell about a | :07:54. | :07:57.
person in five minutes? Is it enough time to decide if they are | :07:57. | :08:00.
worth voting for? Well, that is exactly what a specially selected | :08:00. | :08:03.
group of people have been finding out for a political speed-dating | :08:03. | :08:13.
:08:13. | :08:18. | ||
event. Our political editor Peter Politicians want us to love them. | :08:18. | :08:27.
At election time especially, they need our boats. But the Southampton | :08:27. | :08:30.
residents at City College today were not going to be lulled by | :08:30. | :08:36.
suites serenades. This was speed- dating. With just five minutes to | :08:36. | :08:43.
get answers to tough questions. Karen wanted to impress on these | :08:43. | :08:46.
politicians that they cuts are affecting disadvantaged young | :08:46. | :08:54.
people. They do not understand how serious the issue is out there. | :08:54. | :09:04.
:09:04. | :09:04. | ||
bat is a sad situation? Yes. At the other end up the scale, this woman | :09:04. | :09:10.
was pressing this MP. We cannot ignore the issues that will be | :09:10. | :09:15.
facing us as a society for older people generally. The money has to | :09:15. | :09:21.
be found somewhere or there has to be another strategy. It is not just | :09:21. | :09:26.
the main parties. Here in Southampton, trade unions | :09:26. | :09:29.
Socialists and the UK Independence Party who are also trying to win | :09:29. | :09:34.
brakes on May 3rd. Some thought there simply is not enough time to | :09:34. | :09:38.
decide. I could have done with ten minutes, really. Five minutes is | :09:39. | :09:44.
pushing it. What is the most depressing thing small businesses | :09:44. | :09:49.
need? We want to get involved in projects like the developments that | :09:49. | :09:53.
has been announced in the next 20 years. Survey have had their five | :09:53. | :09:58.
minutes. There is three weeks until we fed at the local election, so | :09:58. | :10:06.
plenty of time to ponder the answers. | :10:06. | :10:12.
Still to come, the Mayday messages from Titanic which helped to save | :10:12. | :10:17.
hundreds of lives. One of two young Nigerian girls who | :10:17. | :10:20.
went missing from Worthing has been tracked down in Spain after what | :10:20. | :10:23.
police think may have been a case of human trafficking. The two girls, | :10:23. | :10:27.
both aged 15, met when they arrived in the UK unaccompanied. They went | :10:27. | :10:30.
missing on Good Friday afternoon, after saying they were going to | :10:30. | :10:33.
church. The two girls later appeared in Valencia, having | :10:33. | :10:37.
travelled there on false passports. One was stopped by border control | :10:37. | :10:47.
:10:47. | :10:49. | ||
but the other got through and is Now, as well as the centenary of | :10:49. | :10:52.
the sinking of the Titanic, 100 years ago this week an organisation | :10:52. | :10:54.
was formed which would change our armed forces and fundamentally | :10:54. | :10:57.
change the way wars were fought. The Royal Flying Corps came into | :10:57. | :11:01.
being on 13th April 1912 in Farnborough. It eventually became | :11:01. | :11:04.
the Royal Air Force. Today a ceremony was held in Hampshire to | :11:04. | :11:14.
:11:14. | :11:18. | ||
The dawn of British military aviation, and Farnborough was right | :11:18. | :11:23.
at the heart of it. Back then, this was an everyday sight in this | :11:23. | :11:28.
corner of Hampshire. Today a replica biplane flew in to recreate | :11:28. | :11:34.
that image. It was one of Britain's first purpose built military | :11:34. | :11:42.
aircraft. And here it is in front of refurbished aircraft hangars. | :11:42. | :11:48.
From 36 airplanes in 1912 to 32,000 by 1918, the Royal Flying Corps | :11:48. | :11:53.
week proved its worth in the First World War. If you imagine the army | :11:53. | :11:57.
stepped in trench warfare, you could have an aeroplane flying a | :11:58. | :12:06.
few 1000 feet above, or taking safety -- safely taking photos of | :12:06. | :12:12.
the enemy positions. It changed the whole nature of warfare. Today an | :12:12. | :12:16.
exhibition opened to those magnificent men and women who built | :12:16. | :12:23.
and flew Farnborough's fabulous but flimsy flying machines. Men like | :12:23. | :12:30.
this lieutenant. Proud for my dad and me to see family members | :12:30. | :12:35.
involved. The Royal Flying Corps was any in existence for six years. | :12:35. | :12:39.
In 1918 it merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the RAF, | :12:39. | :12:44.
and this is the office of the man who made -- happen, Lord from | :12:44. | :12:54.
:12:54. | :12:56. | ||
charge. Vanbrugh -- a fan barrette has been at the forefront. | :12:56. | :12:59.
marvellous day to reflect on the things that have not changed. The | :12:59. | :13:03.
ambition of the people and the courage of those that serve. | :13:03. | :13:12.
history encapsulated in today's fly past. With the modern-day Apache | :13:12. | :13:22.
:13:22. | :13:23. | ||
100 years of the rial -- Royal Flying Corps tomorrow. | :13:23. | :13:28.
Sport and we are looking ahead to Saturday's Grand National. A great | :13:28. | :13:34.
event. Talk about tradition and history. A great story to talk | :13:34. | :13:38.
about tonight. It involves a little bit of history. When the trainers | :13:38. | :13:44.
gathered together at Aintree this year many will remember Josh | :13:44. | :13:49.
Gifford who died this year. The famous who won the race back in | :13:49. | :13:53.
1981. Now one of his protege's will be hoping to follow in his | :13:53. | :14:00.
footsteps with victory in one of the toughest races of will. | :14:00. | :14:07.
It is 31 years since this caused overcame serious injury and his | :14:07. | :14:13.
jockey beat cancer her to win the Grand National. Since the death of | :14:13. | :14:16.
trainer Josh Gifford two months ago, there is one man who would | :14:16. | :14:22.
particularly like to win the race in memory of his former boss. When | :14:22. | :14:28.
the champion retired as deferred's main jockey, this map took over. A | :14:28. | :14:35.
victory at Aintree would be an emotional achievement. By a road | :14:35. | :14:43.
all the Nazi -- I wrote that horse. I did not win the Grand National as | :14:43. | :14:53.
:14:53. | :14:57. | ||
a jockey. It would be wonderful to As the final touches are applied, | :14:57. | :15:04.
the tension is building. I am feeling the nerves coming are now. | :15:04. | :15:09.
Very excited about it. He is feeling so well. He is probably the | :15:09. | :15:14.
best he has ever felt so he can only be excited. Can't wait for the | :15:14. | :15:24.
big day. The horse's moved to Sussex has paid off. We are very | :15:24. | :15:30.
lucky here. There are two miles of bridleways and fantastic scenery | :15:30. | :15:37.
and hill walking. It was starting from scratch with the jumping. | :15:37. | :15:41.
Right back to basics. We built him up gradually and fortunately it did | :15:41. | :15:51.
:15:51. | :15:53. | ||
the trick. The arts are 66-1 for Tatenen to win the Grand National. | :15:53. | :16:03.
Just think what a change of scenery A little extra to mention in this | :16:03. | :16:08.
story, Tatenen's jockey will be Andrew Thornton, not only likely to | :16:08. | :16:12.
be the oldest racer in the race at 39, but also the only one wearing | :16:12. | :16:18.
contact lenses. Thunderstorms, lightning, not | :16:18. | :16:23.
exactly cricketing weather but this was the scene a short time ago. | :16:23. | :16:29.
Look at the Screen on the left-hand side by these floodlight. Ben Dando | :16:29. | :16:34.
ironing. This was Hampshire's first County Championship game of | :16:34. | :16:42.
December against Gloucester. They stayed on at the bit a bit longer. | :16:42. | :16:52.
:16:52. | :17:04. | ||
And tomorrow night, we are at St Mary's. It is the biggest game in | :17:04. | :17:09.
the season so far, Southampton versus Redding. | :17:09. | :17:16.
E British Titanic Society -- the British Titanic Society has been | :17:16. | :17:22.
around today to lay memorials in Southampton. Members of the society | :17:22. | :17:28.
braved the weather to place their tributes to the musicians, who also | :17:28. | :17:35.
received a wreath from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. And | :17:35. | :17:39.
a service of remembrance will be held in Godalming in Sunday -- in | :17:39. | :17:45.
Surrey this sundeck. It was home to Jack Phillips, one of 1,500 people | :17:45. | :17:52.
who died in the disaster. He was the wireless operator whose SOS | :17:52. | :17:57.
messages saved many of those who survived. | :17:58. | :18:01.
We are at Charterhouse in Godalming where amateur radio enthusiasts | :18:01. | :18:05.
have set up their own station in honour of Jack Phillips. They have | :18:05. | :18:10.
even got Titanic's call sign. They have made contact with thousands of | :18:10. | :18:14.
people around the world. They are on to Arizona and Easter Bush at | :18:14. | :18:18.
the moment. They have also contacted Peru and India. For Jack | :18:19. | :18:26.
Phillips the scent distress messages. It fell out of favour | :18:26. | :18:31.
after the Titanic sank and was replaced by SOS. But that message | :18:31. | :18:36.
nevertheless helped to replace -- save hundreds of lives. | :18:36. | :18:40.
Jack Phillips learnt Morse code at the Post Office and went on to work | :18:40. | :18:45.
on several liners after being employed by Marconi. The night's | :18:45. | :18:48.
big Titanic sank, Jack and his colleague were busy sending a | :18:48. | :18:53.
backlog of passengers messages. They received another warning, this | :18:53. | :18:58.
time from the issue closes to them, the SS Californian. Dacre plight, | :18:58. | :19:08.
:19:08. | :19:11. | ||
keep out. You are damning might An hour later and Titanic was in | :19:11. | :19:19.
trouble. Jack cent distress manages which were picked up by his old | :19:19. | :19:23.
friend on another ship, which steams to the rescue. Freezing | :19:23. | :19:29.
water began lapping at their ankles in the radio room. Jack doggedly | :19:29. | :19:36.
continued to transmit. At one point, a stoker burst in and try to take | :19:36. | :19:46.
:19:46. | :19:49. | ||
it off him. The stoker try to take his life jacket. He would have had | :19:49. | :19:56.
a life jacket in his locker anyway. Jack sent a message to the other | :19:56. | :20:00.
ship, come as quickly as possible, old man. The engine room is filling | :20:00. | :20:10.
:20:10. | :20:16. | ||
That was the last anyone heard from Jack Phillips. He made it on to an | :20:16. | :20:20.
upturned collapsible lifeboat but died and his body was never found. | :20:20. | :20:24.
For two years later, the lodges memorial to one person lost on the | :20:24. | :20:28.
Titanic was opened in got will ring. As you can see in this rare footage, | :20:28. | :20:33.
hundreds turned up. Among the great and the good, Jack's father, on the | :20:33. | :20:43.
right. Four women suffragists collected the money and they wanted | :20:43. | :20:47.
something beautiful and something of use, something people could | :20:47. | :20:52.
enjoy in future generations. Work to repair vandalism was completed | :20:52. | :20:57.
with a lottery grant of more than 300,000, but she's not the only | :20:57. | :21:01.
memorial. The one which hunk in the Post Office where he worked had | :21:02. | :21:08.
been missing for years until very recently. A woman walked into the | :21:08. | :21:11.
Post Office with this and donated it to the museum. Because we have | :21:11. | :21:15.
been doing the research for the exhibition I knew right away what | :21:15. | :21:21.
it was and I was absolutely amazed. It was made by Jack's old | :21:21. | :21:27.
headmaster. It is very much in the Arts and Crafts tradition of their | :21:27. | :21:31.
British -- Arts and Crafts tradition of a rounded education, | :21:31. | :21:36.
been able to work with your hands. And Jack's headmaster said he was | :21:37. | :21:44.
not very academic but did work well with his hands and had a good sense | :21:44. | :21:51.
of duty. There was a Jack Phillips a day up until the 1950s. There was | :21:51. | :21:59.
a poor rate and the flak was blown. Art has to read of recently and -- | :21:59. | :22:06.
that has died off recently but I hope we can revive it. They are | :22:06. | :22:11.
trying to persuade a new pub chain to name its pubs the Jack Phillips. | :22:11. | :22:15.
As you can see, technology has moved on since 1912. The only time | :22:15. | :22:19.
most of us will hear more scope nowadays is when you get a text | :22:19. | :22:25.
message on your mobile phone. That is actually remorse for a house | :22:25. | :22:34.
arrests. -- that is actually more scope for S N S. You can come and | :22:34. | :22:40.
see these men here on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. | :22:40. | :22:46.
We invited relatives with stories are the Titanic to shed their | :22:46. | :22:53.
stories with us. This woman's mother was on board. | :22:54. | :22:57.
She heard a crash and then a shudder and a shiver through the | :22:57. | :23:03.
ship. Then it went backwards and forwards to all three times and | :23:03. | :23:09.
then the ship stopped. They are lots of stories like that one about | :23:09. | :23:13.
relatives on board the Titanic. So many that we do not attack to show | :23:13. | :23:17.
the more on Saturday. We have compiled them all online so they | :23:17. | :23:22.
you can browse them at your leisure. Just go to the website. You can | :23:22. | :23:27.
also catch up with the films we have had on side today in case you | :23:27. | :23:35.
missed any of them. -- on South Today. The weather. Thunderstorms | :23:35. | :23:41.
right across the South? Yes, that lightning at the cricket. And right | :23:41. | :23:47.
across the South we have hap thunderstorms, lightning, hailed. | :23:47. | :23:50.
People do really enjoy it thunderstorms but we have dramatic | :23:50. | :24:00.
:24:00. | :24:01. | ||
That was just after lightning struck and the telegraph pole | :24:01. | :24:08.
caught fire, but it has now been restored. The family of this house | :24:08. | :24:12.
were not hurt but they were left shaken. | :24:12. | :24:19.
That the ban mining throughout much of the day. The hailstones as well, | :24:19. | :24:22.
but glad to see these guys are gradually clearing through the | :24:22. | :24:28.
weekend -- through the night. Will the next couple of hours, perhaps a | :24:28. | :24:35.
few more storms, perhaps with hail and thunder. Gradually those | :24:35. | :24:39.
showers ease away and we are left with clearing skies, temperatures | :24:39. | :24:42.
as a result dipping down to freezing in some of our towns and | :24:42. | :24:48.
cities. Cooler in the countryside. You can see a bit of frost to take | :24:48. | :24:51.
this into first thing tomorrow morning. So mist and murk around in | :24:51. | :24:56.
parts as well. But generally tomorrow, shaping up to be a bit of | :24:56. | :25:00.
a crisp and bright start to the day. We will see their showers returning | :25:00. | :25:05.
but for tomorrow, not quite as happy and not as many of them as we | :25:05. | :25:11.
have seen today. So we will see some good sunny intervals and in | :25:11. | :25:16.
those places temperatures are rock to around 14 degrees. Through to | :25:16. | :25:23.
Brownite, a bit of a -- through to tomorrow night, a bit of a repeat | :25:23. | :25:31.
performance. Damp into the early hours taking us into a bit of a | :25:31. | :25:35.
slow start for Saturday morning. Another she won. A touch of frost. | :25:35. | :25:43.
As we look ahead to the weekend, we can see these isobars coming from a | :25:43. | :25:48.
northerly direction. That will bring as much cooler air. We have | :25:48. | :25:52.
had some relatively mild conditions but starting to feel much fresh air | :25:52. | :25:58.
through the weekend. Generally quite a cloudy picture. One or two | :25:58. | :26:01.
showers. But few of them and there will be some brighter skies at | :26:01. | :26:06.
times. In the overnight period we will start to see those | :26:06. | :26:10. |
