Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's | :00:06. | :00:09.
programme: Accusations of panic and chaos. Virgin Atlantic answers | :00:09. | :00:11.
passenger claims about an emergency evacuation which left 15 in | :00:11. | :00:21.
:00:21. | :00:24. | ||
hospital. I sat on the runway for a few moments. The cabin crew threw | :00:24. | :00:30.
open the doors and shouted, evacuate, evacuate! The murder | :00:30. | :00:33.
victim found in a burning Mercedes was Albanian. Now the hunt is on | :00:33. | :00:36.
for his second car. Behind the walls of a young offenders | :00:36. | :00:43.
institution, but what are the chances of rehabilitating inmates? | :00:43. | :00:50.
Flipping burgers on minimum wage or dealing crack on a street corner. | :00:50. | :00:54.
There is no choice. And can a win over Forest give Reading the chance | :00:54. | :00:59.
to climb up to the Premier League? If Reading get a better result than | :00:59. | :01:04.
West Ham, they know they will be back in the Premier League and the | :01:04. | :01:14.
:01:14. | :01:15. | ||
Passengers on board a Virgin Atlantic plane, which had to make | :01:15. | :01:18.
an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport yesterday, have been | :01:18. | :01:22.
talking of the moment they were told to evacuate the plane. They | :01:22. | :01:25.
spoke of a rush to escape down chutes onto the runway in case the | :01:25. | :01:31.
aircraft caught fire. It had turned back an hour into a flight to | :01:31. | :01:35.
Florida. Meanwhile, Virgin today defended staff who shouted at | :01:35. | :01:39.
passengers during the evacuation, saying it was normal procedure. 15 | :01:39. | :01:49.
:01:49. | :01:49. | ||
people were taken to hospital, many of them suffering from broken limbs. | :01:49. | :01:54.
At 4:20pm, the passengers from yesterday's aborted Orlando flight | :01:54. | :01:59.
were on their way again - this time on a jumbo - passing the spot on | :01:59. | :02:06.
the runway where Beck Airbus was evacuated 24 hours earlier. Today | :02:06. | :02:11.
the aircraft has been moved and has been examined by an accident | :02:11. | :02:15.
investigators. Virgin Atlantic says it is investigating claims that | :02:15. | :02:20.
there was panic among the cabin crew. I put it was a passenger | :02:20. | :02:26.
being hysterical. I realised it was the cabin crew for a stub everyone | :02:26. | :02:32.
was being screened at to get out as quick as possible. -- the cabin | :02:33. | :02:36.
crew. One man was back home and said it was easy to see how some | :02:36. | :02:43.
people ended up with broken bones. You just jumped out. Your legs hit | :02:43. | :02:47.
the side and whizzed down to you flew off the bottom and hope we | :02:47. | :02:53.
landed on the tarmac on your feet. Today Virgin defended its cabin | :02:53. | :02:59.
crew, saying they take part in frequent training exercises, and | :02:59. | :03:02.
that the company follows industry standards in its evacuation and | :03:02. | :03:12.
:03:12. | :03:20. | ||
training procedures. In a statement, Some passengers said the crew did a | :03:20. | :03:29.
good job. It was a bit panicked but every mum was a bit panicked. -- | :03:29. | :03:34.
everyone. What was your reflection of the where the crew behaved? | :03:34. | :03:40.
thought they did amazingly. They will start their holiday a day late | :03:40. | :03:44.
but no doubt they are relieved to leave the anxiety and | :03:44. | :03:49.
investigations behind. So, did the crew on the Virgin Atlantic flight | :03:49. | :03:52.
panic? They clearly shouted loudly at passengers. Paul Clifton is here. | :03:52. | :03:58.
Did the crew do the right thing? The suggestion is that Virgin staff | :03:58. | :04:01.
shouted at passengers to rush off the plane. But they could see no | :04:01. | :04:06.
fire, no damage, no reason to be forced out of the aircraft quickly. | :04:06. | :04:11.
That was an absolutely text book response. The crew did precisely | :04:11. | :04:17.
what they have been trained to do. If a tiny electrical fire came into | :04:17. | :04:20.
contact with fuel fumes, the explosion would be sudden and | :04:20. | :04:30.
:04:30. | :04:31. | ||
catastrophic. You need to get the passengers off and fast. There are | :04:31. | :04:37.
usually some minor injuries. I am afraid that is the price you have | :04:37. | :04:43.
to pay for not being burned alive. So, where does this idea of the | :04:43. | :04:45.
crew shouting at passengers come from? It came about after a | :04:45. | :04:48.
terrible incident at Manchester Airport in 1985, when a plane | :04:48. | :04:52.
caught fire and 55 people died. The crew decided to brake slowly, and | :04:52. | :04:55.
taxi off the runway before getting the passengers out. That movement | :04:55. | :04:59.
fanned the flames, leading to an explosion. Critically, it reduced | :04:59. | :05:09.
:05:09. | :05:11. | ||
the amount of time available to evacuate passengers. 55 people died | :05:11. | :05:17.
in that accident because they were not got off fast enough. No one | :05:17. | :05:22.
needed to have died. What the Virgin crew were doing today was | :05:22. | :05:27.
making sure an accident like that will never happen again. Since that | :05:27. | :05:29.
crash, what the Virgin crew did yesterday has been standard | :05:29. | :05:32.
procedure. The same goes for Gatwick Airport, which stopped the | :05:32. | :05:34.
plane on the main runway, regardless of the huge impact on | :05:34. | :05:37.
other flights. The sole objective was to get people out of danger | :05:37. | :05:42.
fast. As we know now, it wasn't necessary. But no-one wanted to | :05:42. | :05:48.
take that risk. Fire officers tackling a major fire at | :05:48. | :05:51.
Southampton Docks say it is likely to last a couple of days. 100 | :05:51. | :05:55.
tonnes of scrap metal is alight at King George V Dry Dock. Cranes have | :05:55. | :05:59.
been brought in to try and clear some of the rubble, so firefighters | :05:59. | :06:01.
can tackle the blaze, which is burning deep inside. Local | :06:01. | :06:06.
residents are being asked to keep their windows and doors shut. Fire | :06:06. | :06:10.
crews in Sussex have tackled a roof fire at a 1 million property in | :06:10. | :06:14.
Billingshurst. The alarm was raised at 4:30aam today. The building is a | :06:14. | :06:16.
three floor property, which has been converted into two separate | :06:16. | :06:20.
homes. All the occupants managed to leave the building and no-one was | :06:20. | :06:26.
injured. An inquest has heard how a teenage Sea Cadet fell to his death | :06:26. | :06:29.
from the rigging of a training ship off Gosport. The jury at Portsmouth | :06:29. | :06:32.
Coroner's Court was told that Jonathan Martin, who was 14, was | :06:32. | :06:34.
trying to help another cadet onboard the TS Royalist, when he | :06:34. | :06:41.
unclipped his harness and lost his balance. Briony Leyland has been | :06:41. | :06:51.
:06:51. | :06:51. | ||
following the inquest and joins us from Portsmouth. The inquest heard | :06:51. | :06:57.
that in May, 2010, the ship was here. It had been taking part in | :06:57. | :07:02.
celebrations to mark Bebo and hundreds and 50th anniversary of | :07:02. | :07:08.
the Sea Cadet movement. Jonathan and other sea cadets had been | :07:08. | :07:18.
:07:18. | :07:23. | ||
taking part in demonstrations and climbing up and down the rigging. | :07:23. | :07:25.
Jonathan and others were furling the sails. He'd finished with the | :07:25. | :07:29.
topsail and then went down to the next level on the mast to help a | :07:29. | :07:32.
female cadet, who was struggling. The inquest heard he unclipped from | :07:32. | :07:35.
safety lines and tried to pass another cadet by going behind her. | :07:35. | :07:39.
She told him to clip back on but he continued. He said he was slipping, | :07:39. | :07:43.
she tried to grab his arm but he fell 25 feet, 8 metres. He struck a | :07:43. | :07:46.
wheelie bin below and then landed in the water. He sustained fatal | :07:46. | :07:48.
chest injuries. What has the inquest heard about safety on | :07:48. | :07:54.
board? Jonathan's fellow Sea Cadets were all interviewed by police. | :07:54. | :07:57.
They said they had been given safety harnesses to be worn around | :07:57. | :08:03.
the waist and told to clip on when they were up in the rigging. Some | :08:03. | :08:06.
said they saw Jonathan unclip during the weekend displays but had | :08:06. | :08:12.
not reported it. A Marine Accident and Investigation Branch report | :08:12. | :08:15.
read to the jury detailed how Jonathan fell because he unclipped | :08:15. | :08:18.
not because the harness failed but it did highlight concerns about the | :08:18. | :08:23.
supervision of cadets and the suitability of the harnesses used. | :08:23. | :08:27.
And Jonathan's parents were in court? Yes, they were. His father, | :08:27. | :08:34.
Andrew, said: Jonathan had been a Sea Cadet for three years and | :08:34. | :08:41.
enjoyed it immensely. He remembered looking at pictures of the Royalist | :08:41. | :08:44.
together and saying to his son it looked a bit dangerous. But | :08:44. | :08:47.
Jonathan said, don't worry, we are all clipped on with our harnesses. | :08:47. | :08:52.
The inquest will continue tomorrow. Back to you. Detectives hunting the | :08:52. | :08:56.
killers of a man found dead in a burnt out car have revealed they | :08:56. | :09:00.
are still trying to find out where he was murdered. They say one of | :09:00. | :09:04.
their top priorities is to find a Ford Mondeo owned by the victim. He | :09:04. | :09:07.
has been identified as an Albanian crane driver, who was living in | :09:07. | :09:16.
Southampton. Police started a murder investigation last Tuesday, | :09:16. | :09:22.
after a body was found in a burnt out Mercedes Cup on the edge of | :09:22. | :09:27.
Southampton. The victim has been named. He is from Albania and lived | :09:27. | :09:32.
in Southampton, working as a crane driver on building sites. We are | :09:32. | :09:38.
looking at his lifestyle, friends and associates, to try to determine | :09:38. | :09:43.
the motive for this horrific killing. In a statement, his family | :09:43. | :09:53.
:09:53. | :09:55. | ||
Police believe he was killed before his silver Mercedes was driven and | :09:55. | :10:01.
set on fire. The car was seen in Southampton on the night he died. | :10:01. | :10:07.
Investigations have been taking place. We are working around the | :10:07. | :10:10.
clock to establish a possible location of the murder. Police are | :10:11. | :10:16.
anxious to trace the car identical to this fund which is owned by the | :10:16. | :10:21.
dead man and thought to be part in the Southampton area. It has this | :10:21. | :10:26.
registration number. I really need to locate that vehicle, if nothing | :10:26. | :10:30.
else to us to rule it out of my inquiry. Big Blue know him a might | :10:30. | :10:36.
have information that could help, please get in touch. -- people who | :10:36. | :10:42.
know him. So by the cause of death has not been established. Police | :10:43. | :10:48.
had been given more time to question a man in connection with | :10:48. | :10:58.
:10:58. | :11:05. | ||
the murder. Portland Port has built two new berths that can accommodate | :11:05. | :11:08.
larger ships. A 5 million scheme to revamp the Queen's Pier has | :11:08. | :11:10.
increased the number of large deepwater berths available at | :11:10. | :11:14.
Portland to 12. It means most Royal Navy vessels, cruise ships and | :11:14. | :11:18.
super yachts, will be able to dock there. The new berths are already | :11:18. | :11:20.
earmarked for use during the Olympic Sailing events to take in | :11:20. | :11:30.
:11:30. | :11:44. | ||
the Games. 19-year-old, Saunders died at the weekend. Friends joined | :11:44. | :11:53.
together for a candlelit vigil. Irrational and unlawful, that was | :11:54. | :12:00.
the damning judgment of the courts today on a decision to rule out | :12:00. | :12:09.
building homes for that very purpose. Basingstoke and Deane | :12:09. | :12:12.
Council bought the Manydown site in 1996 using money from the sale of | :12:12. | :12:16.
council houses. But when it drew up plans for where new homes should be | :12:16. | :12:19.
built, the site was missing from the list. Joe Campbell has been | :12:19. | :12:22.
following the story and joins me now. This is a damning ruling. | :12:22. | :12:25.
has been a hugely controversial case and today's ruling leaves | :12:25. | :12:27.
Basingstoke and Deane embarrased and out of pocket. The Manydown | :12:27. | :12:30.
site was sold to the council by local landowners on the basis it | :12:30. | :12:34.
would be used to meet some of the demand for new homes in the area. | :12:34. | :12:37.
But when a blueprint for Basingstoke's future was drawn up, | :12:37. | :12:40.
the site was nowhere to be seen. Now the Manydown company, who had | :12:40. | :12:43.
sold the site, took the council to court and today a judge ruled they | :12:43. | :12:46.
had to think again They said, having been persuaded to part with | :12:46. | :12:49.
the site, the council then squandered the opportunity it | :12:49. | :12:59.
:12:59. | :13:04. | ||
offered. The council needs to go back and review its core strategy. | :13:04. | :13:08.
It has to look at it afresh. We are happy to work with them and help | :13:08. | :13:13.
come up with a plan for Basingstoke to deliver all the benefits at no | :13:13. | :13:19.
cost to the tax payer. So, how has the council responded to all this? | :13:19. | :13:22.
Well, they now say they have to go and consider the implications of | :13:22. | :13:26.
this and can't do that until they know the makeup of the new council | :13:26. | :13:36.
:13:36. | :13:36. | ||
after next month's elections. Those who oppose the Conservatives say it | :13:36. | :13:39.
is part of promises that are made a previous elections that the site | :13:39. | :13:45.
will not be developed. Labour and the Lib Dems say it has left them | :13:45. | :13:50.
with an unholy mess. The Conservatives say they were going | :13:50. | :13:55.
along with what voters wanted to and not having another development | :13:55. | :13:59.
stuck on the side of Basingstoke. Bedsides degree they are not having | :13:59. | :14:05.
a coherent blueprint means they are probably going to face a rash of | :14:05. | :14:15.
:14:15. | :14:18. | ||
new planning applications. When it first launched its plans for the | :14:19. | :14:21.
justice system, the Government said, unless youth crime was tackled, the | :14:21. | :14:23.
young offenders of today will become the prolific career | :14:24. | :14:27.
criminals of tomorrow. With that in mind, a jail in Dorset has been | :14:27. | :14:30.
trying a series of measures to reduce the number of people stuck | :14:30. | :14:33.
in the so-called revolving door of prisons. The majority of inmates in | :14:33. | :14:35.
Portland Young Offenders Institution are from the South West | :14:35. | :14:43.
area. Our Dorset reporter has been given special access to the jail. | :14:43. | :14:47.
Overlooking the Olympic sailing waters, there are hundreds of young | :14:47. | :14:50.
offenders. A former Borstal, teenage prisoners have been held | :14:50. | :14:57.
here since the mid- 1800s. The coastline a fire -- far cry from | :14:57. | :15:04.
the inner cities some have left behind. Prison life is almost | :15:04. | :15:09.
unrecognisable today to the server side joined 20 odd years ago. Focus | :15:09. | :15:13.
was not on rehabilitation. The choice of flipping burgers on | :15:13. | :15:18.
minimum wage were dealing crack on a street corner, there is no choice. | :15:18. | :15:22.
We have to instil a sense of work ethic and combine that with the | :15:22. | :15:26.
opportunity of getting into meaningful employment on release. | :15:26. | :15:30.
From laying bricks to railway lines, there is the opportunity to gain | :15:30. | :15:36.
new skills. Staff believe everyone has the talent. Their job is to get | :15:36. | :15:40.
inmates interested in learning. In some cases, there are more | :15:40. | :15:45.
fundamental problems to overcome. Watch the horse relax and drop its | :15:46. | :15:50.
head! The tension in the air has just disappeared. This young | :15:51. | :15:55.
offender is learning to keep his calm. It may not be everyone's | :15:55. | :15:59.
vision of a jail sentence but the aim is not just to punish but | :15:59. | :16:04.
prevent the need to punish again. With 1 million people unemployed, | :16:04. | :16:07.
how much hope to they really have of saying goodbye to Portland for | :16:07. | :16:13.
good? You are getting nowhere applying for jobs. I applied for so | :16:14. | :16:20.
many jobs and was being turned down. I'm will move to a different area | :16:20. | :16:28.
and want a fresh start. You are not going to go back to your old life? | :16:28. | :16:35.
No. I have gained qualifications. Now it will be easier. Are you | :16:35. | :16:40.
convinced these schemes work? Are you walking the walk, talking the | :16:40. | :16:45.
talk and then heading out and coming back? I am convinced what we | :16:45. | :16:51.
offer here is effective. It does work. We will be able to seat in | :16:51. | :16:56.
the very near future the results of some of the work we are doing. | :16:56. | :17:00.
Government is trying to reform prisons. Essentially that means | :17:00. | :17:06.
reforming prisoners. Portland things it has turned the corner. | :17:06. | :17:12.
The chief inspector will give his verdict in a few months' time. On | :17:12. | :17:16.
to sport, and Reading Football Club stand on the brink of a 90 million | :17:16. | :17:19.
windfall and a place in the Premier League tonight. They play | :17:19. | :17:21.
Nottingham Forest at the Madejski Stadium but events elsewhere will | :17:21. | :17:30.
also dictate whether Royals fans are celebrating come 10pm.. Let's | :17:31. | :17:39.
join Tony at the stadium. It all comes down to the last few games | :17:39. | :17:47.
where it depends on other teams and what they do. Yes. The fate of | :17:47. | :17:51.
Reading is in their own hands. If they are going to celebrate | :17:51. | :17:55.
promotion tonight, it will be events elsewhere that will dictate | :17:55. | :17:59.
that too is certain extent. Tonight is all about getting a better | :17:59. | :18:05.
result than the team in third place and also chasing promotion - West | :18:05. | :18:10.
Ham United. This is the league table. Bedding have a six-point | :18:11. | :18:18.
lead over West Ham. They -- four points will guarantee promotion. | :18:18. | :18:22.
Tonight if they better the result of West Ham they know they are up | :18:22. | :18:28.
and the promotion party can start here. They are in this position | :18:28. | :18:38.
:18:38. | :18:38. | ||
because of the excellent result on Friday night. The royals got a 14th | :18:38. | :18:44.
win in 16. No one has won more games than Reading in 2012. That | :18:44. | :18:51.
was the key result. It is changing times. A takeover has been in the | :18:51. | :18:57.
offing for several months. It is still to be completed. Half the | :18:57. | :19:04.
club will be sold to the son of a Russian tycoon. He went to school | :19:04. | :19:10.
in the Thames Valley. He is seen as a Royals fan. That still has not | :19:10. | :19:20.
happened. That is due to be fit and proper persons test still going on. | :19:20. | :19:25.
It is felt it is a good thing for the club. It will bring stability a | :19:25. | :19:29.
major financial firepower. The Football League is refusing to | :19:29. | :19:35.
comment on the status of that ongoing takeover. It is all about | :19:35. | :19:39.
events on the field. We can get excited about all of this, what | :19:40. | :19:47.
might happen come 10pm. The players need to stay focused, don't they? | :19:47. | :19:51.
The philosophy of the manager all season is about concentrating on | :19:51. | :19:57.
the next game. Nottingham Forest, 8pm kick-off. Their 19th in the | :19:57. | :20:03.
Championship table. They have some big names but I do expect Reading | :20:03. | :20:09.
to win. Let's hear what Brian McDermott has been saying. He very | :20:09. | :20:16.
much keeps his feet on the ground. It is just a time for doing your | :20:16. | :20:21.
job. There is nothing else on the agenda but Nottingham Forest. That | :20:21. | :20:26.
is the only thing that is in my mind. We trained yesterday and we | :20:26. | :20:29.
will train again today so we can put on a performance for our fans | :20:29. | :20:35.
on Tuesday. He gets excited on the side of the pitch but he is level- | :20:35. | :20:41.
headed. What about the other games? Tough games. Southampton are away | :20:41. | :20:47.
at Peterborough and West Ham are at Bristol City. I do not think | :20:47. | :20:56.
Reading, West Ham and Southampton will all winter night. -- win | :20:56. | :21:05.
tonight. The builder will begin at Sevenoaks 5:00pm. Meanwhile, | :21:05. | :21:07.
tonight, Southampton hope to bounce back from that defeat against | :21:07. | :21:10.
Reading and keep their own promotion campaign on track. They | :21:10. | :21:16.
are at Peterborough. Let's go live to Kris Temple. Two of the last | :21:16. | :21:24.
three games are away from home. They need a result against a | :21:24. | :21:28.
Peterborough side. Here is what Nigel Atkins makes of the challenge. | :21:28. | :21:33.
We need to impose ourselves on the game. The pictures beatable up | :21:33. | :21:38.
there. I hope there will be conducive to the way we want to | :21:38. | :21:42.
play. This is why we are in football. We want to get to the | :21:42. | :21:46.
Premier League. The last couple of weeks of the season, this is what | :21:46. | :21:52.
we're in it for. He is unfailingly positive. If the Saints when all | :21:52. | :21:57.
three games, they will be in the Premier League. West Ham will be | :21:57. | :22:03.
ready to pounce. Expect the same 11 from Friday night against Reading. | :22:03. | :22:09.
The Saints win and the West can defeat will leave Saints on the | :22:09. | :22:16.
brink of the top flight. Other matters to be decided in the | :22:16. | :22:23.
Championship, possibly at the bottom. Tonight, Brighton will hope | :22:23. | :22:27.
to give their fading play-off hopes a boost. Gus Poyet's side take on | :22:27. | :22:30.
Watford at the Amex. Poyet has already admitted he wants to bring | :22:30. | :22:32.
in some more experienced players next season. Portsmouth must | :22:32. | :22:34.
achieve a better result than Bristol City who, ironically, play | :22:34. | :22:38.
West Ham tonight, if they are to stay up. In League Two, Crawley | :22:38. | :22:40.
could go into the automatic promotion places with a win against | :22:40. | :22:43.
Northampton. Swindon could be promoted at the Ebb Stadium against | :22:43. | :22:52.
Dean Holdsworth's men. We will be back at 10:25pm to tell you how it | :22:52. | :22:57.
all goes on. We have some frank Sinatra being played at the moment. | :22:58. | :23:05.
They are looking to party at 10pm. They are going to do it their way. | :23:05. | :23:08.
There are just 101 days until the Olympics start. In the run-up to | :23:08. | :23:11.
the Games, a number of champion athletes are visiting school | :23:11. | :23:13.
children to pass on their knowledge and expertise. Today, Ryde Academy | :23:13. | :23:17.
on the Isle of Wight got a special visit from a Berkshire born athlete | :23:17. | :23:26.
who is hoping to get selected for the Games this summer. I just want | :23:26. | :23:30.
to tell you a bit about my background and what I have done... | :23:31. | :23:35.
Of not every day to get a top athlete popping into your school. | :23:35. | :23:43.
11 pupils at Ryde Academy were treated to appear less so with a | :23:43. | :23:50.
difference. -- ate a PE lesson. is like an invisible Hurdle you are | :23:50. | :23:57.
stepping over. She is won -- one of many athletes hoping to inspire | :23:57. | :24:01.
youngsters in the run-up to the game's. It is nice to have someone | :24:01. | :24:08.
who has got to that step further than we have. It is someone to look | :24:08. | :24:13.
up to. We can say, we have met this person. It is quite nice. | :24:13. | :24:16.
really privileged to be able to train with someone who will be in | :24:16. | :24:22.
the Olympics. You will be watching her support your country and stuff. | :24:22. | :24:25.
Lesley has trained meticulously to get where she is. She has | :24:25. | :24:31.
represented her country at world, Commonwealth and European levels. | :24:31. | :24:34.
Trials in June will determine whether she will be selected for | :24:34. | :24:39.
the Olympics this year. She had this message to share. If you have | :24:39. | :24:45.
a dream, whether it is to be an Olympic athlete, a liar, a doctor, | :24:45. | :24:49.
or just to improve your performance in sport, all is possible with the | :24:49. | :24:55.
right kind of focus, determination and goals. Let's hope she gets into | :24:55. | :25:05.
