Hello, good to have you with us. A over on the BBC News | :00:00. | :00:14.
Hello, good to have you with us. A BBC investigation has discovered | :00:15. | :00:17.
that St Mary's hospital on the Isle of Wight has no consultants at all | :00:18. | :00:21.
on its wards on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The investigation looked | :00:22. | :00:24.
at staffing over one weekend in December. | :00:25. | :00:32.
Maria Lynch is an emergency consultant on the Isle of Wight. She | :00:33. | :00:36.
works one weekend every month ` on the ward in the morning and on call | :00:37. | :00:40.
in the afternoon, when often there are no consultants in the hospital | :00:41. | :00:45.
at all. Every weekend one of us will be here from 8am and we take a | :00:46. | :00:49.
handover from the night registrar and we work through until around | :00:50. | :00:55.
lunchtime. At that point, we may go home and have lunch and we can get | :00:56. | :00:59.
called back for all major trauma, burns, accidents on the road. We | :01:00. | :01:08.
come back for every sort of event. This patient has broken his ankle. | :01:09. | :01:12.
A is one area where the NHS believes weekend cover is especially | :01:13. | :01:17.
important. But for small hospitals like this one, that's difficult. The | :01:18. | :01:22.
total number of consultants working here is 80 and actually there | :01:23. | :01:25.
wouldn't be that much work for those consultants to do even if they were | :01:26. | :01:29.
here. Never mind the cost involved of putting on that level of cover. | :01:30. | :01:36.
Many larger hospitals do have consultants working on the wards at | :01:37. | :01:41.
weekends and even operating. This team at Southampton General are | :01:42. | :01:43.
doing regular brain surgery procedures on Saturdays. I think | :01:44. | :01:50.
there are some people like myself and the anaesthetic team who | :01:51. | :01:53.
actually might prefer to work the odd Saturday. It is an efficient, | :01:54. | :01:57.
effective list and is quite enjoyable. The NHS wants to see more | :01:58. | :02:02.
of this to help improve patient care throughout the week. This whole | :02:03. | :02:08.
argument goes beyond hospitals. It goes into the availability of | :02:09. | :02:11.
primary care at the weekends and also the availability of community | :02:12. | :02:15.
and social services. So the hospitals are simply one component | :02:16. | :02:18.
of a much bigger issue that we have to tackle on behalf of our society. | :02:19. | :02:23.
For smaller hospitals like St Mary's, recruiting consultants isn't | :02:24. | :02:26.
easy and working them at weekends will cost an extra ?2 or ?3 million | :02:27. | :02:34.
a year. Detectives are investigating | :02:35. | :02:36.
allegations Jimmy Savile abused children at two children's homes in | :02:37. | :02:41.
the south. Police and local authorities are looking into | :02:42. | :02:43.
incidents at Broomfield Children's Home in Guildford and an unnamed | :02:44. | :02:50.
children's home in Bournemouth. Jimmy Savile adored the view from | :02:51. | :02:54.
his holiday flat in East Cliff, a flat he bought in the 1970s and | :02:55. | :03:01.
owned until his death. Bournemouth I find a very gentle place, full of | :03:02. | :03:05.
very nice gentle people and very, very attractive ladies, thank | :03:06. | :03:10.
goodness! Chilling words by a man police have since labelled as a | :03:11. | :03:16.
prolific sex offender. A man often spotted running along the seafront | :03:17. | :03:21.
here. Now the Department for Education has asked the council to | :03:22. | :03:24.
investigate a single historic allegation of abuse carried out at a | :03:25. | :03:29.
local children's home. We have been given the witness's statement and we | :03:30. | :03:33.
have been given some guidance about our role in terms of investigating | :03:34. | :03:35.
that allegation and reporting procedures back to the Department | :03:36. | :03:43.
for Education. Do you know the name of the home involved? No, we don't. | :03:44. | :03:47.
We have very sketchy information about the time scales, the home and | :03:48. | :03:51.
that obviously will be our urgent priority to establish the facts as | :03:52. | :03:59.
soon as we can. As well as his holiday flat, Jimmy Savile had | :04:00. | :04:01.
business interests in Bournemouth and it is thought he owned this | :04:02. | :04:05.
entire block at one time, renting out flats. It is not known how long | :04:06. | :04:12.
the investigation by the council will take. That depends whether they | :04:13. | :04:16.
find any truth in the allegation and whether or not this single | :04:17. | :04:24.
allegation leads to any others. A man arrested in connection with | :04:25. | :04:27.
human trafficking in Bournemouth has been released on bail. Police raided | :04:28. | :04:31.
a garage as part of an investigation into forced labour. Six men aged | :04:32. | :04:35.
between 20 and 30 were taken to a safe house. Locals say the car wash | :04:36. | :04:40.
was busy at all hours and recently men had started living in a caravan | :04:41. | :04:44.
on the site. As we revealed yesterday, there was | :04:45. | :04:47.
confirmation today of plans to extend Crossrail to Reading when it | :04:48. | :04:51.
opens in five years. Two trains an hour into central London will bring | :04:52. | :04:54.
thousands of extra rush hour seats into use on one of the country's | :04:55. | :04:58.
most congested routes. But it'll take 50 minutes to get into the | :04:59. | :05:02.
capital, twice as long as the fast service. | :05:03. | :05:11.
I do not have to get out to change. Half of the journey is, is the | :05:12. | :05:16.
connection going to be there? Standing on the platform wondering | :05:17. | :05:20.
if the tube is delayed. I would prefer to have a relaxing journey. | :05:21. | :05:25.
It will not make a difference as it is not going to be as fast. I go | :05:26. | :05:32.
from Oxford to London which takes around 25 minutes, so I do not think | :05:33. | :05:37.
it is going to be of any helpful is top. | :05:38. | :05:41.
The editor of the Reading Chronicle has been suspended and an | :05:42. | :05:44.
investigation launched by the newspaper's publishers after it ran | :05:45. | :05:47.
a front page about hooliganism at the town's football club. Last week | :05:48. | :05:50.
the newspaper upset Royals fans and the club chairman who called the | :05:51. | :05:53.
article an "unwarranted attack". An apology was then made by the paper | :05:54. | :05:56.
online. Today the newspaper apologised on its front page, saying | :05:57. | :05:59.
Reading fans have a well deserved good reputation. | :06:00. | :06:07.
Portsmouth Football Club have sacked manager Richie Barker. Pompey have | :06:08. | :06:10.
won just four of 20 matches in which he's been in charge and face a fight | :06:11. | :06:14.
to avoid relegation out of the football league. Andy Awford has | :06:15. | :06:17.
been appointed caretaker manager and has seven games to turn their | :06:18. | :06:20.
fortunes round. Ritchie was the wrong person in the wrong place at | :06:21. | :06:24.
the wrong time. He didn't fit the Portsmouth mould. We had to act. It | :06:25. | :06:28.
wasn't a case of more time. We don't want to be in the Football | :06:29. | :06:31.
Conference next year. We want to be in the Football League. | :06:32. | :06:32.
That's all from me for now. Most places will be frost free and | :06:33. | :06:44.
any showers will tend is although we're expecting a few more into the | :06:45. | :06:51.
south and areas west of the Isle of Wight where that could be thunder. A | :06:52. | :07:01.
dry start for much of the region although showers will remain in | :07:02. | :07:05.
place for the south`west, the Isle of Wight and western parts of | :07:06. | :07:09.
Hampshire. One or two could drift inland. Some sunshine, but more | :07:10. | :07:18.
cloud than son. As we head towards the weekend, temperatures are on the | :07:19. | :07:23.
up. Possibly up to 18. The sunshine will be hazy and there will be a lot | :07:24. | :07:31.
of cloud. The National weather is next. | :07:32. | :07:32.
weather. Now the national forecast with Nick Miller. | :07:33. | :07:37.
Hello, as winter becomes spring, the atmosphere contains more energy. The | :07:38. | :07:45.
shower clouds grow taller. If conditions are right, you get | :07:46. | :07:49.
thunder storms. There have been some today. Bob took this picture near | :07:50. | :07:54.
London this afternoon. The spring flowers will appreciate the re turn | :07:55. | :07:59.
return of warmth. Until then big showers to come, pushing in across | :08:00. | :08:05.
south-west England - some hail and thunder. Sleet and | :08:06. | :08:06. |
