A 79`year`old man has been arrested after a woman was found with serious | :00:00. | :12:54.
injuries at a bungalow in West Sussex. Police were called to the | :12:55. | :12:57.
property in Grasmere Avenue in Sompting last night. The woman is | :12:58. | :13:01.
being treated in hospital for her injuries. | :13:02. | :13:02.
The government has confirmed its badger cull won't be extended into | :13:03. | :13:06.
Dorset. The car was introduced in an attempt to reduce TB in cattle. | :13:07. | :13:11.
Volunteers may now be called upon to help vaccinate badgers against the | :13:12. | :13:15.
disease. Pilot culls will continue in Gloucestershire and Somerset. | :13:16. | :13:23.
It's the backbone of any city, town or even village. But the high street | :13:24. | :13:26.
has been suffering over the last few years as the economic downturn took | :13:27. | :13:29.
its toll. Some well established names like Woolworths, Blockbusters | :13:30. | :13:32.
or Past Times went into administration leaving shops vacant. | :13:33. | :13:35.
But now a new study from the City suggest the high street is on the up | :13:36. | :13:39.
again after shops that closed over the past five years have new | :13:40. | :13:42.
tenants. Ben Moore reports. The high street has always relied on | :13:43. | :13:45.
footfall ` precisely why this shoe retailer has chosen the centre of | :13:46. | :13:51.
Reading for its new flagship store. Our local customer is a high street | :13:52. | :13:55.
customer. It's the same kind of customer that goes to John Lewis and | :13:56. | :14:02.
places like that. You get them on the high street not in the centres | :14:03. | :14:05.
for retail parks. Retail parks are for DIY stores ` we are not a DIY | :14:06. | :14:09.
store, we are shoe store. Across the UK, in any given town or | :14:10. | :14:13.
city, on average 14% of shops are vacant. Here in Reading that figure | :14:14. | :14:17.
is a bit lower ` it's 11.24%. But that translates directly to the | :14:18. | :14:24.
economy. The average retail spend in the town annually is ?780 million. | :14:25. | :14:32.
We have a huge number of incoming workers every day, working in the | :14:33. | :14:36.
commercial sector. They add hugely to the daytime economy with their | :14:37. | :14:39.
spending. It's also because Reading has world`class transport links. | :14:40. | :14:47.
Town chiefs are certainly recognising the importance of their | :14:48. | :14:51.
high streets. In Gosport, Tinker Tearooms opened three weeks ago, | :14:52. | :14:54.
using council cash to transform a shop left empty for five years. | :14:55. | :14:59.
We were awarded ?7000 towards the cost of refurbishment, which helped | :15:00. | :15:01.
extremely because this whole place had to be totally put back to a | :15:02. | :15:05.
shell. That helped us with the electrics, the flooring. | :15:06. | :15:21.
A generation ago, the town centre was the only place to buy what you | :15:22. | :15:25.
need it. But just a couple of decades ago, the focus shifted to | :15:26. | :15:28.
out`of`town retail parks and, recently, to online shopping. The | :15:29. | :15:35.
high street had hit a new low. This resurgence has come as a surprise. | :15:36. | :15:41.
We are starting to see some different sorts of businesses taking | :15:42. | :15:44.
off, particularly discount stores, pound shops, which are really in a | :15:45. | :15:47.
strong boom since the recession. The supermarket convenience stores are | :15:48. | :15:52.
also starting to take off. So, for Ecco staff preparations with | :15:53. | :15:56.
a big opening are much more than window dressing ` one of many | :15:57. | :15:59.
companies putting the high street back on the map. | :16:00. | :16:16.
You can see band's report again. Tell us what you think about your | :16:17. | :16:22.
high street on our Facebook page. `` see band's reports. | :16:23. | :16:33.
Let's move on to sports. Something of a special day tomorrow. | :16:34. | :16:42.
I'm doing the comment Terry on the football league. There are so many | :16:43. | :16:47.
different people tomorrow who will be saying, it's good to see you | :16:48. | :16:52.
again. It's not just Harry Redknapp coming back to Bournemouth, although | :16:53. | :16:55.
that the first time he will have done so in a competitive game. | :16:56. | :16:59.
What sort of reaction will he gets from the fans? | :17:00. | :17:05.
He took Bournemouth to uncharted territory during his time. He left | :17:06. | :17:10.
in 1992, with nine years as a manager. He said in his book that it | :17:11. | :17:15.
was happiest time he has had as a manager. Of course, he is a resident | :17:16. | :17:20.
of Dorset so he is very much in tune with the area. We also had big Kevin | :17:21. | :17:28.
Bond factor. He will be next to Harry Redknapp in the QPR dugout. | :17:29. | :17:34.
His dad is also a former cherries manager. | :17:35. | :17:41.
Eddie Howe, for his money, says when you think Bournemouth you think | :17:42. | :17:48.
Harry Redknapp. All sentiment aside, it's a huge | :17:49. | :17:55.
game with a big 3`pointer up for grabs. Even Redknapp's achievements | :17:56. | :18:02.
Harry Redknapp arrived at Bournemouth more than 40 years ago | :18:03. | :18:06.
as a player, but it was as a manager that he made his name. | :18:07. | :18:38.
I have followed the club. I love the club. I've got a lot of time for | :18:39. | :18:40.
Bournemouth Football Club. Eddie has done an amazing job there. | :18:41. | :18:43.
In Eddie Howe, the Cherries have their most successful boss since | :18:44. | :18:46.
Redknapp. Six wins in eight in March means Bournemouth have an outside | :18:47. | :18:49.
shot at the play`offs. We'll see what comes in the coming | :18:50. | :18:53.
games. I don't think there is too much pressure on us and, hopefully, | :18:54. | :18:57.
we can enjoy these games. In the next few years, if they hang | :18:58. | :19:01.
onto Eddie, it's a club that could end up going into the Premier | :19:02. | :19:04.
League. I think they're building a real good infrastructure there. It's | :19:05. | :19:08.
a good football club. Redknapp won't be the only familiar | :19:09. | :19:11.
face tomorrow ` Kevin Bond is QPR's assistant. During his time as | :19:12. | :19:14.
Cherries boss, he employed a young Eddie Howe. | :19:15. | :19:19.
I owe a huge amount to Kevin. He had faith in me when I was coming to the | :19:20. | :19:24.
end of my career, and I was going nowhere. I had no plans set out for | :19:25. | :19:28.
me, and I'm very thankful for Kevin giving me an opportunity. At that | :19:29. | :19:32.
stage, I didn't know that coaching was what I wanted to go into. | :19:33. | :19:35.
Familiar faces but those for 90 minutes tomorrow. QPR are play`off | :19:36. | :19:38.
bound, but the big question is whether Cherries can join them. | :19:39. | :19:47.
In the Premier League, Southampton could have a say in the title race | :19:48. | :19:50.
tomorrow when they face Manchester City in the lunchtime kick off. In | :19:51. | :19:53.
the Championship, Bournemouth's game with QPR is also the featured game | :19:54. | :19:57.
on the Football League show. Reading in sixth are at struggling Charlton, | :19:58. | :20:00.
Brighton go to Barnsley. MK Dons and Swindon both face away games in | :20:01. | :20:05.
League One. Portsmouth have a first home game in Andy Awford's second | :20:06. | :20:09.
spell as caretaker as they host Hartlepool, Oxford entertain | :20:10. | :20:14.
Fleetwood. Full commentary on BBC local radio. | :20:15. | :20:17.
And all the best of the action is on Monday night in Late Kick Off, | :20:18. | :20:20.
including the former Portsmouth defender who once enforced the | :20:21. | :20:23.
penalty area and now enforces the law as a policeman in Holland. | :20:24. | :20:27.
Non`league Sholing head into the second leg of the FA Vase semi final | :20:28. | :20:30.
with their tie against Eastbourne United level at 2`2. The Boatmen, | :20:31. | :20:34.
who play in the Wessex league, are hoping to emulate fellow Hampshire | :20:35. | :20:37.
side Gosport borough in reaching a Wembley final. BBC Radio Solent has | :20:38. | :20:44.
live commentary of the game. Congratulations to Reading Rockets | :20:45. | :20:47.
tonight. They have retained their national basketball title without | :20:48. | :20:52.
actually playing. The Rockets, who lost at Worthing last Saturday, | :20:53. | :20:55.
secured the title ` their third of the season ` thanks to nearest | :20:56. | :20:58.
rivals Essex having to forfeit their match with Newham, thus ensuring the | :20:59. | :21:02.
Rockets win the league with two matches to spare. | :21:03. | :21:04.
It's Grand National weekend, and the Berkshire trainer Nicky Henderson | :21:05. | :21:07.
will be hoping to end his wait for a winner of the big race at Aintree. | :21:08. | :21:11.
Henderson has four runners in the National which goes off at 4.15pm, | :21:12. | :21:14.
with Long Run, ridden by Sam Whaley`Cohen likely to be his best | :21:15. | :21:17.
contender. The former Gold Cup winner is currently third in the | :21:18. | :21:25.
betting with odds of 12`1. Long Run, we decided at Christmas | :21:26. | :21:28.
that we would take the Grand National route rather than the Gold | :21:29. | :21:31.
Cup route. We had a good practice race at Kelso, he won really nicely. | :21:32. | :21:35.
He schooled very well. We have built special fences for this, so we have | :21:36. | :21:38.
practised at Aintree`type obstacles. He has been very good. | :21:39. | :21:50.
Championship rugby club London Welsh have signed a new three year deal to | :21:51. | :21:54.
ground share at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium. They will not pursue | :21:55. | :21:57.
their interest in a move to Witney in West Oxfordshire. London Welsh | :21:58. | :22:00.
have already secured their place in the end of season play`offs as they | :22:01. | :22:04.
bid to secure a return to the Premiership at the first attempt. | :22:05. | :22:12.
It's quite a sporting weekends. We've got the Brighton Marathon, and | :22:13. | :22:21.
the Grand National. Judging by your weather pictures | :22:22. | :22:24.
today, spring has certainly sprung. You were in a very flowery mood. | :22:25. | :23:04.
Paul captured a swan taking off at this harbour. | :23:05. | :23:10.
What is the weekend weather going to be like? | :23:11. | :23:23.
We are seeing a change of weather type now ` the problems of Saharan | :23:24. | :23:29.
dust and pollution being swept aside as the Atlantic brings to bear. What | :23:30. | :23:32.
will actually be a pretty cloudy story across this weekend, with the | :23:33. | :23:36.
rain more particularly so on Sunday. A dry night tonight but increasing | :23:37. | :23:39.
amounts of low cloud, and hill fog conditions as well. The first of | :23:40. | :23:42.
these fronts through Saturday generally affecting western areas, | :23:43. | :23:45.
so for many of our district some patchy, light rain. There will be a | :23:46. | :23:49.
good deal of cloudy weather. But on Sunday some heavier outbreaks of | :23:50. | :23:52.
rain, and it will be a breezy day. For the rest of this evening, a few | :23:53. | :23:56.
brighter spells have lingered but the cloud cover will steadily | :23:57. | :23:59.
increase as the night wears on. There could be some sea fog just | :24:00. | :24:02.
starting to appear across some of our southern coastal districts ` the | :24:03. | :24:06.
Isle of Wight and towards Sussex. A bit of uncertainty on that. Low | :24:07. | :24:09.
cloud around tomorrow morning, with temperatures having dropped to about | :24:10. | :24:12.
six or seven degrees. Tomorrow will bring an extensively cloudy day. At | :24:13. | :24:15.
low cloud giving hill fog conditions, and occasionally these | :24:16. | :24:17.
patches of light rain feeding through. On the south coast, you | :24:18. | :24:21.
will see some of that, and less so as we move north to the likes of | :24:22. | :24:24.
Oxfordshire. This process continues as we head towards the evening, with | :24:25. | :24:27.
little real change. Temperatures tomorrow should still get up to | :24:28. | :24:31.
about 13 or 14 degrees. As we look through towards the tail end of the | :24:32. | :24:35.
weekend and into next week, Sunday will be the wetter of the two days | :24:36. | :24:39.
of the weekend. Some of that rain quite heavy at times as it moves | :24:40. | :24:42.
eastwards. Quite a windy day as well. We will continue with further | :24:43. | :24:46.
outbreaks of rain and showers to get next week under way on Monday, but | :24:47. | :24:50.
high pressure will start to build as we move through the Tuesday. That | :24:51. | :24:53.
could mean the return of some light frost. | :24:54. | :25:04.
Now, for an update on a story we've been following. He's been missing | :25:05. | :25:13.
for weeks and they thought he was lost forever. A rare carp, that swam | :25:14. | :25:16.
away from an aquatic nursery in Hampshire during the floods has been | :25:17. | :25:20.
found ` nearly eight miles away. He was first spotted on Budds Lane in | :25:21. | :25:24.
Romsey, but then managed to get into the river Test, where he was | :25:25. | :25:27.
eventually picked up all the way down in Totton. Frankie Peck has the | :25:28. | :25:34.
story. Although slightly battered and | :25:35. | :25:37.
bruised, Chad the carp has reunited with his fishy friends. When Romsey | :25:38. | :25:40.
World of Water flooded back in February, a number of fish made | :25:41. | :25:48.
their escape. Chad swam away with Steve! Steve is a sturgeon. | :25:49. | :25:58.
Chad sort of waved goodbye to Steve, and left him in the garage as it | :25:59. | :26:01.
were. Chad carried on swimming. We haven't heard anything from him. He | :26:02. | :26:05.
ended up in someone's garden. We got a phone call to say that they | :26:06. | :26:09.
thought it was Chad because he was a very friendly fish, and he was being | :26:10. | :26:12.
fed his breakfast every morning. Then came another call from Jane, | :26:13. | :26:17.
almost eight miles away from Romsey. Today, along with her husband they | :26:18. | :26:23.
collected their reward of ?2500. We made the phone call before we'd | :26:24. | :26:27.
heard about the reward. When I had a call from Mark to say they had got | :26:28. | :26:32.
Chad back, and it was as a result of our phone call, and that we were | :26:33. | :26:36.
going to get ?2500, I was shaking after I got off the phone. I don't | :26:37. | :26:40.
know what I would be like if I won the lottery! | :26:41. | :26:45.
Chad's adventures did leave their mark. | :26:46. | :26:51.
He has been under medical supervision, and in Chad hospital | :26:52. | :26:55.
for a couple of weeks. He has made a full recovery. He is a happy fish | :26:56. | :26:59.
now. He and Steve swam around for about 30 minutes. | :27:00. | :27:07.
Chad has now gone back to being a big fish in a small pond. | :27:08. | :27:15.
That's all from us. There'll be a news summary at 8pm and we'll be | :27:16. | :27:18.
back with a bulletin at 10.25pm. | :27:19. | :27:30. |
