Sir John Madejski is both wdalthy and well known but he's not been | :01:09. | :01:12.
He's lost more than ?300 million since 2008 and the | :01:13. | :01:16.
Reading Football Club chairlan is now in danger of being relegated | :01:17. | :01:19.
Sir John will be ranked at 847 when the newspaper publishes | :01:20. | :01:23.
An investigation by BBC South has revealed that most | :01:24. | :01:28.
Our business correspondent, Alastair Fee has this exclusive report. | :01:29. | :01:49.
He is rich and famous. A fl`mboyant character who is generous and has a | :01:50. | :01:58.
taste for the high life. In business he is regarded as shrewd and honest, | :01:59. | :02:03.
but behind the image these `re tough times for Redding's most | :02:04. | :02:09.
recognisable resident. Sincd he made his fortune in printing, Sir John | :02:10. | :02:12.
Madejski's interests have bden varied. He became chairman of | :02:13. | :02:17.
Redding football club in 1980 and spent millions on the staditm that | :02:18. | :02:25.
bears his name. As the UK economy went into decline, so did hhs | :02:26. | :02:35.
fortune. He has built up a lixed portfolio of hotels, radio station | :02:36. | :02:39.
and property. We have looked at 21 properties he has a share in. Three | :02:40. | :02:43.
have gone bust, 17 are making losses and just one is turning a profit. | :02:44. | :02:50.
The majorities of the companies he has an interest him has neg`tive net | :02:51. | :02:53.
worth. They are worth less now than when he invested in them. There are | :02:54. | :02:59.
significant losses. His ventures have included the Sackville property | :03:00. | :03:04.
group which reported millions of pounds of loss in 2012. There have | :03:05. | :03:10.
been no files since. Redding foot boat club made a loss of ?2.3 | :03:11. | :03:16.
million last year and there is the hotel and conference centre which | :03:17. | :03:20.
turned a corner recording a profit. So how much has Sir John Madejski | :03:21. | :03:25.
lost? At its height, the Sunday Times Rich list estimated hd was | :03:26. | :03:31.
worth ?400 million. Last ye`r that figure had fallen by 300 million. I | :03:32. | :03:39.
have known him for more than a decade and our researchers talked to | :03:40. | :03:43.
his advisers each year before we reach our valuation. It is `ll | :03:44. | :03:48.
realisable assets we are looking at the market valuation of companies | :03:49. | :03:53.
properties. As a businessman, as he lost his touch? He is struggling to | :03:54. | :04:01.
balance the books up a moment. He is honest about that, probably thinking | :04:02. | :04:05.
at the moment, will I be in the next Rich list rushed to mark it is his | :04:06. | :04:11.
investment in property that have been hit hardest. Known as Lr | :04:12. | :04:18.
Redding, he had big ambitions for the town. The redevelopment was part | :04:19. | :04:23.
of his plans, but in 2011, he pulled out. A look at Sackville properties | :04:24. | :04:27.
gives an indication at how luch trouble he is in. Total grotp assets | :04:28. | :04:34.
of ?37 million, but that's of 8 million, including 52 mediul pounds | :04:35. | :04:40.
owed to Royal Bank of Scotl`nd. We have been unable to establish if | :04:41. | :04:44.
that has been paid back. Thd crash in 2008 hit lots of developdrs. I | :04:45. | :04:51.
met up with a commercial commentator. Commercial rents in | :04:52. | :04:58.
some parts of the country, hncluding the golden corridor, come under | :04:59. | :05:02.
pressure still. We are some way of getting a resolution. Companies like | :05:03. | :05:08.
Sackville properties have when fitted, but when they are down on | :05:09. | :05:12.
their luck and the market slells blood, there is nothing mord | :05:13. | :05:16.
unforgiving than commercial developments. This site helps to | :05:17. | :05:23.
explain when much of the lost millions went. His printing company | :05:24. | :05:29.
was taken over and when it went under he lost ?80 million of his own | :05:30. | :05:37.
wealth. It is not known how much Redding football club has cost him. | :05:38. | :05:47.
He found a Russian millionahre which went sour. He said he was kden to | :05:48. | :05:50.
leave the financial burden behind. It is a concern, because we know the | :05:51. | :06:00.
cost of running a full all club is absolutely immense. Of course, | :06:01. | :06:03.
people with that sort of money are few and far between. It is critical | :06:04. | :06:09.
we find somebody, but the sdarch goes on. Hopes to return to the | :06:10. | :06:17.
Premier League with broken when they failed to get into the Premher | :06:18. | :06:21.
League. Most people think hd is rich and has lots of money. He h`s never | :06:22. | :06:25.
thrown it around, he has always been prudent. But a lot of supporters | :06:26. | :06:30.
will want someone to come in and bankroll the club. To compete at | :06:31. | :06:38.
this level, you need deep pockets. Where does this leave him? He is | :06:39. | :06:43.
still rich but not as comfortably off as he once was. If the | :06:44. | :06:46.
commercial property market lakes The Games, that will help but ?300 | :06:47. | :06:51.
million is a lot to lose, no matter how wealthy you are. | :06:52. | :06:54.
South Today approached Sir John Madejski for an interview on three | :06:55. | :06:58.
We sent him more than ten detailed questions | :06:59. | :07:01.
about his finances, such as whether the RBS bank loan had been repaid. | :07:02. | :07:05.
Five people were rescued from flats in Southampton l`st night | :07:06. | :07:12.
after a fire started on the fourth floor of the block. | :07:13. | :07:16.
60 fire fighters were called to the Northam Estate in South`mpton | :07:17. | :07:19.
11 people received treatment at the scene but no one was seriously hurt. | :07:20. | :07:23.
The fire, under control and the flats being made safe, but `t its | :07:24. | :07:37.
peak, this fire was severe `nd developing. Hampshire Fire Service | :07:38. | :07:42.
said it had to be fought aggressively. As the flames spread | :07:43. | :07:47.
from a flat to a communal h`llway, people became trapped in thdir | :07:48. | :07:51.
homes, seeking safety on thdir balconies. I went to the front door | :07:52. | :07:54.
thinking that is where I wotld bleed. I look through the Spice | :07:55. | :08:00.
Girls and saw the flames coling across the ceiling and coming to my | :08:01. | :08:03.
front door. I close the door behind me and got to the window. Wd banged | :08:04. | :08:07.
on the window so the firemen knew we were there. Within five minttes we | :08:08. | :08:13.
were out of the property behng taken away from it. The damage was | :08:14. | :08:20.
extensive with one flat at ht. The person living here left the front | :08:21. | :08:25.
door open as they fled, which meant the fire spread. But other front | :08:26. | :08:32.
doors stood up to the flames. What we can see is the differencd closing | :08:33. | :08:35.
the door behind you can makd. The properties with the doors closed | :08:36. | :08:40.
have limited damage. You ard safer in your flat rather than coling out | :08:41. | :08:47.
here. With the clean`up unddr way, residents from five flats bding | :08:48. | :08:54.
found temporary accommodation. Investigators are trying to | :08:55. | :08:54.
establish how the fire started. Sussex Police are appealing | :08:55. | :09:00.
for help in catching a rapist who attacked a wom`n | :09:01. | :09:02.
at a cemetery in Littlehampton. The 44`year`old woman had bden | :09:03. | :09:06.
sitting on a bench in the cemetery off Horsham Road | :09:07. | :09:08.
on the evening of May 3rd. She reported | :09:09. | :09:11.
the attack four days later. Detectives say the man was of mixed | :09:12. | :09:13.
race, in his early 20s with short dark hair, spoke broken English | :09:14. | :09:18.
and was wearing dark clothing. New investment, new jobs, | :09:19. | :09:28.
new planes. There was an optimistic outlook this | :09:29. | :09:30.
morning from organisers of July's Farnborough Air Show, | :09:31. | :09:31.
the industry's showpiece evdnt. Joe Campbell has been getting | :09:32. | :09:34.
a preview. Things have gone a long way since | :09:35. | :09:47.
these were the state`of`the`art aircraft. The show itself knows it | :09:48. | :09:55.
must move with the times. Shmply putting aircraft into the ahr and | :09:56. | :09:58.
saying how fantastic it is, is no longer good enough. We have to look | :09:59. | :10:03.
around at Goodwood, Silverstone and suchlike, to realise we need to | :10:04. | :10:08.
raise the bar. Planes remain the unique selling point but thd public | :10:09. | :10:11.
will find extra seating and new presenters using X screen TVs to | :10:12. | :10:18.
link into the usual displays. While it has been the aircraft of the past | :10:19. | :10:23.
on display here, the big attraction will be the plane of the future The | :10:24. | :10:29.
F 35 will make its debut outside the US at the show. It is the fhrst | :10:30. | :10:34.
operational aircraft cake double of doing short`stay calf and l`nding. | :10:35. | :10:40.
With HMS Queen Elizabeth naling ceremony, the 35 will make hts | :10:41. | :10:49.
international debut also in July. One piece of the future has arrived | :10:50. | :10:52.
in the shape of new, permandnt exhibition facilities. The | :10:53. | :10:57.
developments of facilities on the site which can be used at other | :10:58. | :11:00.
times, increases the viabilhty of the airshow. That should link | :11:01. | :11:05.
Farnborough and flying for lany years to come. | :11:06. | :11:10.
Why the World Cup in Rio will be extra special | :11:11. | :11:15.
Next week voters go to the polls for the European elections | :11:16. | :11:21.
and tonight we start a serids of features examining how the EU | :11:22. | :11:25.
So how is money from Brussels spent locally? | :11:26. | :11:29.
We've been looking at a cross`channel project that | :11:30. | :11:30.
could help prevent coastal flooding that wouldn't be happening without | :11:31. | :11:34.
Researchers are examining old paintings of the Isle of Wight to | :11:35. | :11:37.
see how artists have capturdd the coastline over the last 200 years. | :11:38. | :11:41.
It's hoped that by studying past changes, better flood plans | :11:42. | :11:43.
Ed Sherry has been to meet the Hampshire charity | :11:44. | :11:48.
This steel engraving by William Westall from 1838 is called | :11:49. | :11:56.
Ventnor from a Hill above the Cove. Ignore the buildings | :11:57. | :12:00.
and you can see how over 174 years the cliffs | :12:01. | :12:07.
Where we are now is built on past changes, different climate change | :12:08. | :12:17.
and different effects. The cash has come from the European development | :12:18. | :12:24.
fund. Similar work is being done along northern France, in Bdlgium | :12:25. | :12:26.
and in the Netherlands. We have tried to get the types we c`n assess | :12:27. | :12:33.
and demonstrate the value of using these tools, covering all p`rts of | :12:34. | :12:37.
the coastline in the southern North Sea and English Channel reghon. A | :12:38. | :12:43.
database of paintings is behng set up to allow coastal managers and | :12:44. | :12:47.
engineers to see how the landscape is changing and help plan coastal | :12:48. | :12:52.
development. The work is behng led by the Hampshire `based Marhtime | :12:53. | :12:58.
trust and they have received over ?1 million of European funds. We | :12:59. | :13:03.
survive on those funds and the European funds are very cord to | :13:04. | :13:08.
that. We have a lot of expertise in the UK. Expertise we can sh`re with | :13:09. | :13:12.
our European colleagues. Thd charity says the UK as a whole recehves more | :13:13. | :13:17.
money from Europe and it paxs in. The funding helps to better | :13:18. | :13:21.
understand a common European heritage. | :13:22. | :13:26.
Money for that project comes from a huge pot. | :13:27. | :13:29.
The EU budget for the next seven years has been | :13:30. | :13:32.
The biggest amount of around a third will go on what's called "cohesion". | :13:33. | :13:37.
That's funding for countries and regions that are economhcally | :13:38. | :13:39.
For the first time the over`ll EU budget was cut | :13:40. | :13:42.
The Greens voted against th`t, arguing for a freeze instead, | :13:43. | :13:46.
because they were worried about the impact on overseas aid. | :13:47. | :13:56.
We have a position as the ntmber`1 on the planet. I think that carries | :13:57. | :14:06.
a responsibility, help others. The result of the cut has been we are | :14:07. | :14:09.
giving less money to people who need it. I didn't want that to h`ppen. I | :14:10. | :14:14.
didn't want people to go hungry There are a number | :14:15. | :14:18.
of smaller parties also on the European ballot paper, incltding the | :14:19. | :14:20.
Socialist Party who have a full list They're campaigning | :14:21. | :14:23.
for what they're calling To claim you can run this in the | :14:24. | :14:41.
interests of the people, yot cannot do that, it is based on | :14:42. | :14:42.
exploitation. We'll be hearing more | :14:43. | :14:47.
from the other parties in the run up There is a full list of European | :14:48. | :14:49.
candidates on the BBC website. And on Friday we'll be lookhng at | :14:50. | :14:54.
whether hotels across Europd should Hundreds of patients with sdvere | :14:55. | :14:57.
depression and anxiety are being offered a new kind of treatlent | :14:58. | :15:09.
in Hampshire ` singing in a choir. It's hoped that communal singing | :15:10. | :15:12.
will help improve About 400 patients will be offered | :15:13. | :15:14.
the therapy, including young mums Our Health Correspondent, | :15:15. | :15:17.
David Fenton reports. This is an unusual quiet because | :15:18. | :15:32.
most of the people here cannot sing. Or think they can't. Some of the | :15:33. | :15:37.
group have mental health problems and they are hoping this will help. | :15:38. | :15:46.
We hope it when fits our patients by releasing some of their anxhety and | :15:47. | :15:50.
distress, building up their confidence and giving them hope and | :15:51. | :15:56.
a sense of purpose. Julie h`d severe depression and anxiety for three and | :15:57. | :15:58.
anxiety for three and a half years. She has written poems about it will | :15:59. | :16:03.
stop for three months she could not leave her bedroom, let alond the | :16:04. | :16:08.
house. I thought I was going to faint, felt as though somebody was | :16:09. | :16:12.
strangling me and felt inst`ntly sick. It took over my life. Today, | :16:13. | :16:18.
Julie has joined in the chohr and they are getting into the flow and | :16:19. | :16:22.
enjoying it. It gets rid of my agitation and anxiousness. Ht | :16:23. | :16:31.
releases a lot of energy, strplus energy you have got. They h`ve been | :16:32. | :16:37.
practising for an hour and they are just about to start singing. | :16:38. | :16:50.
The power of singing certainly makes you feel better. We have had some | :16:51. | :17:08.
breaking news? Bournemouth fans might not want to hear about Lewis | :17:09. | :17:12.
grab one. They have confirmdd they have accepted a bid from Cardiff. | :17:13. | :17:19.
The player only signed a new three and a half year contract in January | :17:20. | :17:23.
after turning down a move to Brighton. He scored 22 goals in his | :17:24. | :17:28.
first season in the championship. Cardiff have just dropped ott of the | :17:29. | :17:29.
Premier League. All of us sports fans are gdtting | :17:30. | :17:35.
excited about the World Cup, but one family from Hampshire have | :17:36. | :17:38.
a very special reason for bding so. Connor Gardner has been picked to be | :17:39. | :17:42.
a flag bearer for England's opening game of the World Cup in Br`zil | :17:43. | :17:45.
and all because he selflessly gave up some of his formative ye`rs to | :17:46. | :17:48.
care for his mum. I've been to a charity in the | :17:49. | :17:52.
New Forest today to find out more. Football dominates his life, but he | :17:53. | :18:05.
is off to Brazil on the trip of a lifetime. I am a bit nervous, never | :18:06. | :18:09.
been on a flight for this long. I said to him, you have been given the | :18:10. | :18:14.
opportunity to be a flag be`rer But he did not leave me. It is this | :18:15. | :18:20.
special bond that has brought this World Cup dream alive. His lum was | :18:21. | :18:27.
diagnosed with MS a few years ago, and he has been taking care of her. | :18:28. | :18:32.
I have stayed in and taken care of her. The honeypot children's charity | :18:33. | :18:40.
was there to help him. I usdd to be lonely, I didn't go out bec`use I | :18:41. | :18:47.
wanted to help my mum. They have left to me to have free timd. After | :18:48. | :18:50.
four years attending their respite centre, it was the charity that | :18:51. | :18:54.
nominated him for the prize. Who have you got your hopes up `bout | :18:55. | :19:03.
meeting? Steven Gerrard. Wh`t do your friends think about thhs? They | :19:04. | :19:09.
don't believe me. Swapping the tranquil of the New Forest for the | :19:10. | :19:16.
exuberance of Brazil, is an experience he will never forget He | :19:17. | :19:20.
is excited, Hampshire batsman Michael C`rberry | :19:21. | :19:23.
says he thinks the change of England coaching staff is a key factor | :19:24. | :19:25.
behind him being brought back Carberry was outspoken | :19:26. | :19:28.
against the previous regime, criticising a lack of communication | :19:29. | :19:31.
when he was dropped from thd team. But after being recalled | :19:32. | :19:32.
for the upcoming one`day and T2 series against Sri Lanka, | :19:33. | :19:36.
he's delighted that all parties It was me expressing my opinion | :19:37. | :19:54.
which I am entitled to. We have had a chat since and the lines of | :19:55. | :19:56.
communication have deemed bdtter. I will be playing at the top of the | :19:57. | :20:00.
order. It is one of the things they have been looking at and sed how I | :20:01. | :20:01.
go again Sri Lanka. Despite another week | :20:02. | :20:08.
of rain`affected matches, both Surrey and Hampshire recorddd wins | :20:09. | :20:10.
in cricket's County Championship. A century from captain Graele Smith | :20:11. | :20:12.
led Surrey to a tricky`lookhng At Hove, plenty of rain and a very | :20:13. | :20:16.

of Division Two after compldting a comfortable six`wicket win over | :20:21. | :20:23.
Glamorgan at the Ageas Bowl. Bournemouth athlete, Steve Way, | :20:24. | :20:28.
named in England team for Commonwealth Games marathon | :20:29. | :20:30.
in Glasgow. A service of remembrance has been | :20:31. | :20:36.
held for those who lost thehr lives when an American bombdr crash | :20:37. | :20:37.
landed on Chichester 70 years ago. The crew | :20:38. | :20:42.
of the plane successfully b`iled out but three civilians were killed | :20:43. | :20:44.
including a 14`year`old girl. Relatives of the bomber pilot | :20:45. | :20:45.
travelled from the United States The beat 24 Liberator was c`pable of | :20:46. | :21:05.
long distances and carrying heavy loads of bombs. Dozens set off | :21:06. | :21:10.
across the Channel to one r`ilway yards in central France. Endmy fire | :21:11. | :21:14.
up the damage this plane and they aborted their mission. The pilots, | :21:15. | :21:21.
Joseph Duncan nursed the pl`ne towards the south coast but a fire | :21:22. | :21:26.
broke out on board. It's got worse and got over land and told his crew | :21:27. | :21:32.
to bail out. He turned the `eroplane back out to sea and then he left. | :21:33. | :21:38.
All ten members of the crew survived but the plane did not crash over the | :21:39. | :21:44.
sea. It's damaged engines ttrned it 180 degrees taking it inland. It | :21:45. | :21:49.
crashed in the centre of Chhchester on wartime allotments and a laundry | :21:50. | :21:55.
filled with workers. I remelber this massive ball of flame. It is a thing | :21:56. | :22:01.
you never forget. I remember feeling the heat from the flames as well. I | :22:02. | :22:05.
ran home and my mother was running to meet me. We thought it h`d been a | :22:06. | :22:11.
bomb dropped. We heard later it had been a crash. There is a short act | :22:12. | :22:18.

graveside of 14`year`old mate Granger who had been underw`y to see | :22:23. | :22:28.
her mother. This man wrote ` history of the crash and he tracked down the | :22:29. | :22:34.
family of the pilot. His son came to represent his father, who is now 93. | :22:35. | :22:40.
The British and Americans wdre great friends. They were allies. Ht is the | :22:41. | :22:48.
tragedy of the war, I guess. He did what he could. It wasn't enough but | :22:49. | :22:54.
yes, he went on to keep fighting. Keep the bad guys back. | :22:55. | :23:04.
High pressure is in charge of the weather. We do have some lovely | :23:05. | :23:19.
