stand firm, dismissing talk of a leadership | :00:00. | :00:27.
not be able to provide free hot meals come September. How btsiness | :00:28. | :00:33.
is booming for the self`employed despite the risks. Can I do that on | :00:34. | :00:40.
my own? I think people should go for it. And as Pochettino departs, who | :00:41. | :00:54.
is next for team`mac? We fedl we can have a short list presented | :00:55. | :00:55.
quickly. But first tonight, a major police | :00:56. | :01:29.
investigation is underway in Dorset following the disappearance | :01:30. | :01:31.
of a 44`year`old nurse. Rui Lee hasn't been seen | :01:32. | :01:33.
since she left work at A man's been arrested on | :01:34. | :01:36.
suspicion of murder. Roger Finn is in Poole | :01:37. | :01:39.
for us tonight. She is 44 years old and comds from | :01:40. | :01:46.
China. She has worked at thd hospital for five years. Shd was | :01:47. | :01:50.
reported missing yesterday `nd today the police said that she max have | :01:51. | :01:51.
been murdered. There are various things th`t I | :01:52. | :01:56.
can't go into at the moment for operational reasons that give | :01:57. | :02:00.
us cause for concern. It may be she is safe and wdll | :02:01. | :02:03.
and doesn't want to be found at the moment, but there is | :02:04. | :02:07.
an indication that that is not the case and that is why we are | :02:08. | :02:10.
treating it as a murder enqtiry What are you asking | :02:11. | :02:14.
the public to do? Anyone who knows her and can tell us | :02:15. | :02:19.
about her and give us a background on what she does and who is she | :02:20. | :02:23.
associates with is really ilportant. What more can you tell us | :02:24. | :02:26.
about the man who's been arrested? He has been arrested on suspicion of | :02:27. | :02:39.
murder. Forensics teams are examining locations in Boscombe A | :02:40. | :02:46.
hospital spokeswoman said they are very concerned about her whdreabouts | :02:47. | :02:50.
and hope she will be found safe and well. | :02:51. | :03:03.
A young boy is seriously ill after being found in a swimming pool on | :03:04. | :03:07.
board a cruise ship. The Independence of the Seas left | :03:08. | :03:09.
Southampton on Sunday. Cruise company Royal Caribbean has | :03:10. | :03:12.
confirmed the six`year`old was found in the pool on Tuesday and taken by | :03:13. | :03:15.
helicopter for medical attention in Brest, France. | :03:16. | :03:17.
It was a Government pledge by Nick Clegg meant to give all under | :03:18. | :03:21.
seven`year`olds a free school meal from September | :03:22. | :03:23.
But an investigation by BBC South has found that hundreds | :03:24. | :03:27.
of primary schools across the region are still facing ?significant | :03:28. | :03:30.
challenges? in doing so and some are not on track to deliver on time | :03:31. | :03:33.
One head teacher has critichsed the policy saying it's been ?too | :03:34. | :03:36.
There will soon be more mouths to feed at St James's First School | :03:37. | :03:44.
From September, reception, year one and year two pupils become | :03:45. | :03:47.
The head teacher is racing to make it happen on time. | :03:48. | :03:53.
We have a threefold increasd in the amount of children having hot meals. | :03:54. | :03:57.
We think we have the space in the kitchen but we can't be | :03:58. | :04:01.
It is a huge thing to bring in so quickly and that is the real worry. | :04:02. | :04:07.
He is also concerned that ftnding from | :04:08. | :04:09.
We don't seem to have got the financial backing | :04:10. | :04:14.
behind it to make sure all the right things are in place, and th`t's | :04:15. | :04:18.
But some schools only much worse position. | :04:19. | :04:22.
Earlier this year, the BBC revealed that thousands of schools | :04:23. | :04:24.
require kitchen improvements to be able to supply the extra me`ls. | :04:25. | :04:27.
Now the BBC has submitted Freedom of Information requests to local | :04:28. | :04:31.
authorities to find out what contact they have had with the Government | :04:32. | :04:35.
We were shown documents about how many schools are ready | :04:36. | :04:39.
Hundreds of schools are fachng significant challenges if they are | :04:40. | :04:45.
But some schools are not on track at all, including one in five | :04:46. | :04:52.
in both Wiltshire and Bourndmouth, and one in seven in West Berkshire. | :04:53. | :04:57.
Bournemouth Borough Council told us all the skills can provide | :04:58. | :05:01.
That is not good enough for the Head Teachers? Union. | :05:02. | :05:07.
I think they should be hot leal provision for all our children. | :05:08. | :05:12.
Some schools might struggle because this has been pushed through by | :05:13. | :05:15.
Schools need to be prepared for it so they can provide | :05:16. | :05:21.
So is Nick Clegg's promise of free hot meals for all infants | :05:22. | :05:25.
The Government would not give us an interview about the results of | :05:26. | :05:31.
For schools like St James's, which admits it faces significant | :05:32. | :05:57.
challenges, it is not just about money when they | :05:58. | :06:00.
will deliver, but the pace `nd difficulty of making the ch`nge | :06:01. | :06:09.
So how much trouble is this policy in? | :06:10. | :06:11.
Most schools in the South whll provide free school meals | :06:12. | :06:18.
And there's strong support for the idea. | :06:19. | :06:21.
But still some of our Local Authorities do have schools | :06:22. | :06:24.
And for many that are, coping with the increase in demand is dhfficult. | :06:25. | :06:31.
A large number are in the category of facing | :06:32. | :06:34.
?significant challenges?, including 66% of schools in Hampshire, | :06:35. | :06:39.
Also, the head teachers? unhon told us it's worried the Governmdnt's | :06:40. | :06:44.
funding, about ?2.30 per me`l, won't be enough. | :06:45. | :06:46.
Despite this, the Government says it'll bd fine? | :06:47. | :06:50.
Yes, the Government insists its policy | :06:51. | :06:52.
will work and will be on tile, and their guidance is still for it to be | :06:53. | :06:56.
a hot meal, which some schools have already told us won't be possible. | :06:57. | :07:00.
And we've had lots of comments on our Facebook page. | :07:01. | :07:10.
Nick writes that he has a ltnchtime supervisor and sees how much hassle | :07:11. | :07:20.
this costs. Gary says the school he works at will be ready but the issue | :07:21. | :07:24.
will be the overstretched btdget. A pilot has appeared in court | :07:25. | :07:30.
charged with the manslaughtdr of a former Royal Marine who died | :07:31. | :07:33.
in a biplane crash in Dorset. Orlando Rogers died when thd | :07:34. | :07:36.
Tiger Moth crashed at Witch`mpton Scott Hoyle, from Broadstond, | :07:37. | :07:39.
was at the controls. He appeared at Bournemouth | :07:40. | :07:42.
Magistrates Court this mornhng and was granted bail to appdar at | :07:43. | :07:44.
Winchester Crown Court on Friday. The family of | :07:45. | :07:52.
a 15`year`old air cadet frol Reading who died in a mid`air collision have | :07:53. | :07:55.
secured an undisclosed settlement Flight Lieutentant Mike Bled and | :07:56. | :07:58.
cadet Nicholas Rice died in June 2009 when their training aircraft | :07:59. | :08:02.
hit a glider near Abingdon. The pilot | :08:03. | :08:05.
of the glider parachuted to safety. In 2012, an inquest jury returned | :08:06. | :08:07.
a verdict of accidental death. A 23 year`old woman wept in court | :08:08. | :08:35.
today recalling the moment police told her the lollipop man she had | :08:36. | :08:39.
hit with her car had died. Lauren Paul is charged with causing death | :08:40. | :08:42.
by careless driving. Raymond Elsmore, who was 82, was knocked | :08:43. | :08:45.
down on the school crossing in Waterlooville. Caroline Richardson | :08:46. | :08:48.
reports from Southampton Crown Court. | :08:49. | :08:50.
At 3:05pm on the fifth of Ddcember, the sun was setting on a brhght | :08:51. | :08:52.
clear sunny day. Lauren Paul was driving back to work at South Downs | :08:53. | :08:56.
College. As she turned onto Tempest Avenue, the sun was in her dyes She | :08:57. | :08:59.
said ?I couldn't look directly into the sun. It was blinding. It was | :09:00. | :09:03.
very hard to see?. Ray Elsmore had just started his shift on the | :09:04. | :09:07.
crossing patrol. He was standing in the road with his lollipop wearing a | :09:08. | :09:10.
high visibility coat. The fhrst moment Miss Paul was aware of him | :09:11. | :09:14.
was when he hit her windscrden. She was arrested by police and then | :09:15. | :09:17.
rearrested later that evening after an officer told her that Mr Elsmore | :09:18. | :09:20.
had died. Asked how she reacted to that, she started to cry in the | :09:21. | :09:24.
witness box and said ?I don't think I've fully recovered from it now?. | :09:25. | :09:28.
This morning, the jury heard from the collision investigator who said | :09:29. | :09:31.
the effectiveness of Mr Elslore s high visibility coat would have been | :09:32. | :09:34.
reduced by the position of the sun behind him making it very dhfficult | :09:35. | :09:38.
to pick him out. But he adddd this does not account for why thd driver | :09:39. | :09:41.
did not see him and she failed to adjust her driving to percehve or | :09:42. | :09:45.
react in time to the presence of the school crossing patrol officer. The | :09:46. | :09:49.
case continues. Still to come | :09:50. | :09:59.
in this evening's South Tod`y: Running in the family and cxcling | :10:00. | :10:01.
too ` we meet the Blounts. Business is booming | :10:02. | :10:07.
for the self`employed across the region despite the risks | :10:08. | :10:17.
in setting up on your own. That's according to | :10:18. | :10:21.
a report out today by an independent think tank, which suggests that | :10:22. | :10:23.
a remarkably high proportion of new jobs created since 2000 have | :10:24. | :10:26.
gone to the self`employed. In the South East, | :10:27. | :10:30.
which includes Berkshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Whght | :10:31. | :10:33.
Sussex and Surrey, self employment accounted for 72% of the new jobs | :10:34. | :10:36.
created between 2000 and 2003. In the South West, | :10:37. | :10:42.
which covers Dorset and Wiltshire, self`employment accounted | :10:43. | :10:46.
for 62% of new jobs in that time. Here's our business | :10:47. | :10:49.
correspondent Alastair Fee. From senior sales manager to baking | :10:50. | :11:03.
entrepreneur. This business began four years ago. It started off as a | :11:04. | :11:11.
hobby and then went full`tile. It was difficult. It still is | :11:12. | :11:16.
difficult. But we have been very lucky. To begin with, I missed the | :11:17. | :11:25.
day to day contact, but I don't miss the politics that comes with working | :11:26. | :11:31.
any big business. The bakerx as among the rising number of | :11:32. | :11:36.
businesses set up by people who want to work for themselves. Resdarch | :11:37. | :11:40.
says the trend is creating lore jobs than established employers. The | :11:41. | :11:47.
growth is about the recession but also about structural shifts in our | :11:48. | :11:52.
economy and society. For ex`mple, we are seeing shift in mindset and | :11:53. | :11:58.
values. Autonomy, freedom, self`expression are what people | :11:59. | :12:05.
value at work. The freedom of being your own boss comes at a prhce. The | :12:06. | :12:11.
average self`employed worker earns ?74 per week less than a full`time | :12:12. | :12:20.
employee, well they are happier others say it is not that shmple. | :12:21. | :12:28.
The report says it provides little insight into the market. Thdre are | :12:29. | :12:38.
lots of types of self`emploxed. In Basingstoke, evidence that hf you | :12:39. | :12:44.
get it right, the self`employed are making money and creating jobs. This | :12:45. | :12:49.
industrial estate sales bar code scanners. Business has grown by 40% | :12:50. | :12:57.
over three years. I could h`ve stayed where I was but it got to the | :12:58. | :13:00.
point where I wanted to forl this company. I had a vision that I had | :13:01. | :13:08.
to follow and you would work. It has come to fruition. Some of the | :13:09. | :13:14.
self`employed is that as a hobby but evidence suggests more people are | :13:15. | :13:19.
getting a taste for it and going full`time. If it continues, there | :13:20. | :13:23.
could be more working for themselves than in the public sector. | :13:24. | :13:30.
A new initiative to help disabled people to find employment w`s | :13:31. | :13:33.
It's a partnership between two disabled charithes, | :13:34. | :13:36.
the Enham Trust, based at Enham Alamein near Andover, and Rdmploy. | :13:37. | :13:39.
Both organisations have historically employed disabled people thdmselves. | :13:40. | :13:41.
This scheme aims to find people work with mainstream employdrs. | :13:42. | :13:45.
Joe Campbell went along to find out more. | :13:46. | :13:54.
For four years, Matthew wandered the streets looking for a job. No one | :13:55. | :14:01.
would hire me. I wanted to do stuff with my life. His problem w`s that a | :14:02. | :14:07.
learning difficulty meant she left school with no qualifications. Now, | :14:08. | :14:12.
after getting help, he has found employment. It was everything I | :14:13. | :14:20.
wanted any job. It was technology, gaming, tablets, televisions. It is | :14:21. | :14:32.
the best of both worlds. Today saw the launch of a partnership aimed at | :14:33. | :14:36.
helping more people like Matthew. The trust, set up to help soldiers | :14:37. | :14:42.
returning from the war, set up a factory to provide work for those | :14:43. | :14:52.
with disabilities. Remploy has controversially turned its back on | :14:53. | :14:55.
that model, keen to make money go further. A service like this has the | :14:56. | :15:03.
possibility to cater for all areas of disability. Without lookhng at | :15:04. | :15:11.
individual needs, you can't answer the question. I can't be certain of | :15:12. | :15:17.
cater to all needs. Opening up your plugs a gap in the Remploy network. | :15:18. | :15:23.
In the past, they have tried to find employment for those with | :15:24. | :15:26.
disabilities in the Midlands and the North. The trust, longest ydar, has | :15:27. | :15:35.
struggled with major employdrs, even those on the doorstep, instdad | :15:36. | :15:39.
dealing more with national organisations. We can spend a lot of | :15:40. | :15:45.
time in finding the right pdrson and were hugely successful and forming a | :15:46. | :15:52.
partnership when we do. On the whole, companies and organisations | :15:53. | :15:57.
are very receptive. Local elployers were here today. The hope is that, | :15:58. | :16:02.
by partnering with the regional employer, people like Matthdw will | :16:03. | :16:03.
get the benefit. A meeting?s being held in Thdworth | :16:04. | :16:08.

the latest proposals on relocating army facilitids to | :16:11. | :16:12.
the Salisbury Plain area. `` families. Last year, | :16:13. | :16:22.
the Ministry of Defence announced that an additional 4000 milhtary | :16:23. | :16:24.

conversation in sport. Who hs going to take over from Pochettino? Chris | :16:37. | :16:44.
Temple is here tonight. Everyone has a view on this. Most people get us | :16:45. | :16:50.
the views on who they do not want to replace Pochettino, but I al not | :16:51. | :16:52.
sure anyone has a particular idea. big guessing game Let's havd a look | :16:53. | :17:25.
at some of the bookies' favourites. He had some success in the | :17:26. | :17:28.
Champions League with Swiss side Basle, led them to two wins over | :17:29. | :17:33.
Chelsea in the competition. Like Saints owner | :17:34. | :17:36.
Katharina Liebherr, is Swiss. Then there's Ronald Koeman, | :17:37. | :17:38.
managed in Holland, Portugal He recently left Dutch | :17:39. | :17:40.
club Feyenoord. Saints fans will have bad mdmories | :17:41. | :17:43.
of their last Dutch managers ` Jan Poortvliet and Mark Wotte | :17:44. | :17:46.
weren't exactly successful. Michael Laudrup was sacked | :17:47. | :17:49.
by Swansea in February, but led them to a League Cup win, | :17:50. | :17:51.
their first major trophy. Also touted heavily for the Celtic | :17:52. | :17:54.
job. Then there's David Moyes, possibly | :17:55. | :17:56.
tarnished by his unsuccessftl Would he want to return | :17:57. | :17:58.
to management so quickly? And what about Eddie Howe, | :17:59. | :18:04.
Bournemouth's manager who ldd them to a tenth place finish in their | :18:05. | :18:06.
first season in the Championship. He employs an attractive stxle that | :18:07. | :18:10.
would fit the Saints? philosophy. No top level experience, | :18:11. | :18:13.
would be massive gamble. The main concerns among Saints fans | :18:14. | :18:15.
centre on not only who the new manager will be, but how many | :18:16. | :18:18.
of their top players are likely to Speaking for the first time | :18:19. | :18:22.
since Pochettino's departurd, seems chairman Ralph Krueger faced | :18:23. | :18:24.
the media today and had somd He was firm in response to criticism | :18:25. | :18:27.
of the club's silence We did everything we | :18:28. | :18:31.
believe possible. Whatever decision came on hhs part, | :18:32. | :18:35.
it came There was a strong contract | :18:36. | :18:37.
on the table. The clubs' fans are split on their | :18:38. | :18:41.
views on who should fill his shoes. I think we should have tightened | :18:42. | :18:47.
down and we had the chance. I don't know what we're going to get | :18:48. | :18:50.
and you're going to find a lot of fans wondering if they whll get | :18:51. | :18:54.
their season ticket or not. Hopefully the board can man up | :18:55. | :18:57.
and fight these advances, We feel that we can move because of | :18:58. | :19:20.
the preparation it has been done by our scouts and recruiters. | :19:21. | :19:23.
We feel we can move quickly to the next step | :19:24. | :19:26.
The need for a quick appointment is clear. | :19:27. | :19:30.
The busy summer transfers look set to materialise. | :19:31. | :19:32.
We have the highest quality managers in Europe knocking on our door. | :19:33. | :19:35.
We have the highest quality available players and | :19:36. | :19:39.
Which players stay might affect who they can appoint as manager and it | :19:40. | :19:47.
is those decisions that Saints must use to reaffirm their ambithon. | :19:48. | :19:50.
For those outside the club, who will succeed Mauricio Pochettino, is one | :19:51. | :19:59.
Summer is the season for ins and outs of course, and Reading striker | :20:00. | :20:20.
Adam Le Fondre is poised to join Championship rivals Cardiff City. | :20:21. | :20:23.
The 27`year`old, who scored 15 goals for the Royals last season, is close | :20:24. | :20:27.
That could end Cardiff's interest in Bournemouth's top scorer | :20:28. | :20:31.
Lewis Grabban, for whom they had a bid accdpted. | :20:32. | :20:33.
Sussex all`rounder Chris Jordan played a starring role for Dngland | :20:34. | :20:36.
today as they thrashed Sri Lanka at Old Trafford. | :20:37. | :20:38.
He could well be bowling hilself into contention for the Test team. | :20:39. | :20:42.
Jordan took career`best international figures of 5 for 9, | :20:43. | :20:44.
as Sri Lanka were shot out for just 67. | :20:45. | :20:46.
They lost their last six wickets for just nine runs. | :20:47. | :20:49.
67 was the second lowest evdr total in an ODI against England | :20:50. | :20:52.
England knocked off the runs in just 12 overs, to take a 2`1 lead | :20:53. | :20:56.
Now, the saying goes a family that plays together stays | :20:57. | :21:02.
together, but very few will train together for a biathlon! | :21:03. | :21:05.
But, that's exactly what thd Blount family from Swanmore in Hampshire | :21:06. | :21:08.
11`year`old Ciara Blount has been selected for Team GB's Under 13s | :21:09. | :21:12.
squad and will compete in the European Championships | :21:13. | :21:14.
Lewis Coombes went along to a family training session. | :21:15. | :21:22.
Meet the Blounts, Hampshire's version of the Incredibles. | :21:23. | :21:25.
A family with a passion for biathlons, | :21:26. | :21:27.
triathlons and pentathlons, anything really, as long | :21:28. | :21:31.
as it involves running, swilming and today's activity, cycling. | :21:32. | :21:38.
11`year`old Ciara is about to fly off to Portugal to | :21:39. | :21:41.
compete in the Under`13s European Biathle Championships. | :21:42. | :21:45.
She's a year younger than most of her competitors. | :21:46. | :21:51.
It all started from the racd at school. The top for children that | :21:52. | :22:01.
qualified would go through to gigabits. I came fourth. I couldn't | :22:02. | :22:15.
stop smiling. I can see my xounger sister is in Team GB! | :22:16. | :22:24.
Mum and Dad themselves are keen triathletes, but what reallx get's | :22:25. | :22:27.
their heart racing is watchhng their children compete. | :22:28. | :22:29.
It's pretty clear that speed runs in the family. | :22:30. | :22:35.
I think I cried watching. They cheered very loudly, that w`s | :22:36. | :22:51.
amazing. It was a brilliant result. My mum and dad are very sporty and | :22:52. | :22:53.
my sister led me to it. Big sister Emily has had success | :22:54. | :22:57.
in her own right. Earlier this month, | :22:58. | :23:00.
she was talent spotted by the But for young William, | :23:01. | :23:02.
it's mostly cheering from the I hear them on the sidelines and now | :23:03. | :23:27.
it is him! They are the most talented and energetic family we | :23:28. | :23:35.
have in the region! Essex and Surrey did not ball today. The chalpionship | :23:36. | :23:43.
is not going well this week. It is not a good cricket day. If xou are | :23:44. | :23:59.
more days like that, unsettled. Martin captured this rainbow. | :24:00. | :24:22.
Unsettled conditions over the next 48 hours, but the chance of | :24:23. | :24:30.
thunder. Tonight will see b`nds of rain move across the region with | :24:31. | :24:35.
outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. We could have the odd heavy burst. | :24:36. | :24:40.
There will be dry periods to a low mist and fog patches to appdar. | :24:41. | :24:47.
Temperatures tonight dropped to a mild and 11 or 12 Celsius and the | :24:48. | :24:54.
winds are variable. Tomorrow there will few showers but as the ease, we | :24:55. | :25:00.
will see sunny spells develop and that could trigger one or two heavy | :25:01. | :25:05.
thunderstorms. They are mord likely along the south coast. It could | :25:06. | :25:12.
trust and land where we havd sunny spells, along with light winds. | :25:13. | :25:19.
Highs tomorrow of 70 to 19 Celsius. Further thundery showers gr`dually | :25:20. | :25:25.
ease through Friday morning, and temperatures stay mild with lows of | :25:26. | :25:32.
11 to 12. Friday will see showers and the risk of thunderstorls. The | :25:33. | :25:37.
good news is that this area of high pressure building means we will have | :25:38. | :25:49.
varying amounts of cloud, btt a slim chance that most places will stay | :25:50. | :25:54.
dry. There will be rest showers across the week with the odd rumble | :25:55. | :25:59.
of thunder tomorrow and Friday, but some sunshine is more likelx at the | :26:00. | :26:05.
weekend. Low pressure for the next two days, so thunder showers | :26:06. | :26:11.
possible tomorrow and Fridax. Saturday is probably the better day | :26:12. | :26:14.
for the weekend, with temperatures up to 20 Celsius. High pressure is | :26:15. | :26:21.
building. We will see some sunshine but the chance of a shower over the | :26:22. | :26:32.
weekend. A gardener's delight! Tomorrow, we're going to look at | :26:33. | :26:36.
colourful floral displays at Chichester Cathedral. It is a | :26:37. | :26:46.
biannual event. This year's event coincides with the cathedral's 00 | :26:47. | :26:51.
and adversity. It will be open to the public tomorrow. We will have | :26:52. | :27:02.
plenty more for you tomorrow night. More at 8:00pm and 10:25pm good | :27:03. | :27:10.
night. | :27:11. | :27:16. |
