When you're next to it, is ht impressive? | :01:36. | :01:48.
She is absolutely cold sore. Almost 1000 feet long. `` colossal. The new | :01:49. | :02:04.
ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, hs three times bigger than HMS illustrious. | :02:05. | :02:10.
Building the ship has been ` gigantic task, involving people | :02:11. | :02:14.
right around the country. That includes many on the south coast. | :02:15. | :02:18.
Today's naming ceremony was a big event. It was a special cerdmony for | :02:19. | :02:32.
a special ship. Prime Minister was among the guests. The country's | :02:33. | :02:39.
largest ever worship was christened by the Queen. I name this ship Queen | :02:40. | :02:47.
Elizabeth. May God bless her and all who sail in her. For the sahlors | :02:48. | :02:55.
already serving on the carrher, it was a ceremony they will always | :02:56. | :03:01.
remember. It is a privilege to be part of this. It is a | :03:02. | :03:07.
once`in`a`lifetime chance. Ht is a massive project. To be part of it, | :03:08. | :03:13.
I'm very proud. This is the first aircraft carrier we have had any | :03:14. | :03:20.
long time so to be able to do this is a big thing. Already, thd ship's | :03:21. | :03:27.
first captain has been appohnted. He says this ship will be the jewel in | :03:28. | :03:30.
the crown of the UK's milit`ry assets. The Queen Elizabeth coming | :03:31. | :03:35.
into service underlined the importance of maritime history and | :03:36. | :03:39.
strategy and where we must go to ensure our security at home and to | :03:40. | :03:42.
promote and protect our intdrests around the world. The new ahrcraft | :03:43. | :03:50.
carrier is now structurally complete but on`board there is still much to | :03:51. | :03:53.
do to get her ready for her first the trials. | :03:54. | :03:59.
Portsmouth's future as a naval base is bound up with this first carrier | :04:00. | :04:02.
` and parts of the second c`rrier are currently under construction | :04:03. | :04:05.
there. So what was the reaction in what will become HMS Queen | :04:06. | :04:07.
Elizabeth's home port? Frankie Peck is there now. | :04:08. | :04:14.
In just over two and a half years' time, HMS Queen Elizabeth whll enter | :04:15. | :04:21.
the Solent and come to Portsmouth harbour for the first time. | :04:22. | :04:24.
Portsmouth is proud of its naval maritime history and tradithons But | :04:25. | :04:32.
it has been tarnished by job losses in the city. Earlier today, I went | :04:33. | :04:37.
with the people of Portsmouth to take a look. In pro today for | :04:38. | :04:43.
Portsmouth. Hundreds of people turned out to watch the namhng | :04:44. | :04:46.
ceremony, being shown live hn the historic dockyard. Next door, HMS | :04:47. | :04:52.
victory, a reminder of how far the Navy's flagships have developed We | :04:53. | :04:57.
have used our strengths to the best of our ability and I am protd that | :04:58. | :05:02.
we can look at that ship today and think about what it will me`n for | :05:03. | :05:08.
people from Portsmouth and Southampton. Large sections of the | :05:09. | :05:14.
carrier were built in the chty. But with work in the shipyard coming to | :05:15. | :05:19.
an end this summer, the pride of Portsmouth's involvement has been | :05:20. | :05:23.
offset by the loss of 1100 jobs The announcement was made on a dreary | :05:24. | :05:28.
day last November. It is a bittersweet moment. We are | :05:29. | :05:31.
celebrating today but there is a lot of disappointment that people will | :05:32. | :05:35.
be leaving shipbuilding in Portsmouth. That will be thd end of | :05:36. | :05:41.
500 years of building ships. And all question has been brought forward, | :05:42. | :05:43.
should shipbuilding leave Portsmouth? We would very mtch like | :05:44. | :05:49.
to see it kept in Portsmouth. Our students remain in Portsmouth all of | :05:50. | :05:54.
their lives so it is not good for us. A lot of people will lose their | :05:55. | :06:04.
jobs. Hears ex`Navy, so when he was in Portsmouth it was a thriving | :06:05. | :06:09.
naval time. Of course, now ht is nearly all gone. It is good that we | :06:10. | :06:15.
keep up and help around the UK with ship holding. It was a diffdrent | :06:16. | :06:20.
picture six years ago when the contracts were signed in Portsmouth | :06:21. | :06:23.
for the Navy's new aircraft carriers. Portsmouth was getting big | :06:24. | :06:30.
orders for the shipyard. Now, after a turbulent year, Portsmouth is | :06:31. | :06:35.
looking to the future to secure as many jobs as possible looking after | :06:36. | :06:45.
the new chips. `` ships. Wh`t happens next? The next step is for | :06:46. | :06:53.
HMS Queen Elizabeth to get her bottom wet for the first tile when | :06:54. | :06:57.
she is floated out of this dnormous drydock. Then they will completely | :06:58. | :07:04.
fit out the inside and she should arrive in Portsmouth in the early | :07:05. | :07:10.
part of 2017. What about thd second carrier? Large parts of the second | :07:11. | :07:14.
carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, are already here. Those giant blocks | :07:15. | :07:19.
will be moved into this drydock which is currently occupied by HMS | :07:20. | :07:25.
Queen Elizabeth. HMS Prince of Wales will be identical to this ship | :07:26. | :07:32.
behind me. What is the latest on the aircraft deal? There are hints that | :07:33. | :07:40.
the Government is close to ordering the first jets. That may happen in | :07:41. | :07:45.
the next few weeks. We may see that at the Fairford air show or at | :07:46. | :07:51.
Farnborough. You have followed the story from the beginning. How would | :07:52. | :07:56.
you assess the importance of today? It is hugely significant th`t this | :07:57. | :08:00.
project went through a roller`coaster of decision`laking. | :08:01. | :08:02.
Eventually, they decided to go ahead. This ship will be in service | :08:03. | :08:09.
for 50 years. At the Navy s`ys, the last captain of this ship h`s not | :08:10. | :08:11.
yet been born. Thank you very much. He survived the 9/11 terror attacks | :08:12. | :08:15.
in New York. But Courtenay @llan, from Hampshire, was to die `lmost | :08:16. | :08:20.
two years later while at work off the French coast. Today, his family | :08:21. | :08:23.
have spoken of their relief after the Chinese company he was working | :08:24. | :08:26.
for, was convicted of corporate manslaughter. It marks the dnd of | :08:27. | :08:28.
their eleven year fight for justice. We made a pact we would leave no | :08:29. | :08:44.
stone unturned and we could not rest our heads until we got to the truth. | :08:45. | :08:50.
And your fight for their father Courtenay Allan on board thhs cargo | :08:51. | :08:57.
ship in July 2003. He fell 60 feet down a lift shaft after circuits | :08:58. | :09:02.
were rewired to overwrite the safety mechanism. The company who owned the | :09:03. | :09:09.
ship has been motto "we takd it personally". That is somethhng Mr | :09:10. | :09:14.
Alan's sons can identify with. It has taken more than a decadd to | :09:15. | :09:19.
uncover who was responsible. It was an English person in French water on | :09:20. | :09:22.
the Chinese owned ship soap was always going to be compensated. We | :09:23. | :09:28.
had to push as hard as we c`n. The company have unfortunately put | :09:29. | :09:32.
roadblocks in our way. They tried to wear us down. A French court has | :09:33. | :09:37.
ruled that Courtenay Allan's death was corporate manslaughter `nd the | :09:38. | :09:39.
company have been fined 50,000 euros. Getting this judgement has | :09:40. | :09:46.
cost the family much more. We spent the last 11 years learning lift | :09:47. | :09:51.
mechanics and electronics. So we could actually understand what | :09:52. | :09:56.
happened and pinpoint what happened. Courtenay Allan worked for the | :09:57. | :10:02.
company for 37 years, mainlx from here in Southampton. Tragic`lly his | :10:03. | :10:07.
death happened just two years after he was a survivor of the 910 terror | :10:08. | :10:14.
attacks in New York. In a statement, the company said the | :10:15. | :10:19.
closure of this long`running matter would be in the best interests of | :10:20. | :10:25.
all concerned. Very bittersweet but we can hold our heads up high | :10:26. | :10:28.
because we have done things in a dignified manner, as our father | :10:29. | :10:36.
would expect us to. Ben is now bringing up his own family. This | :10:37. | :10:42.
grandson that Courtenay All`n never met. There is a chance this case | :10:43. | :10:46.
will go to appeal but because of the pact they made, the brothers will | :10:47. | :10:49.
continue to fight in their father's memory. | :10:50. | :10:52.
The inquest into a former Royal Navy sailor who died after drinkhng a | :10:53. | :10:55.
bottle of fruit juice he did not know had been laced with cocaine, | :10:56. | :10:58.
has been adjourned. His famhly wants the coroner to call a jury to | :10:59. | :11:01.
consider the case. Lawyers for relatives of Jerome Lewis s`y | :11:02. | :11:04.
because he was working to hdlp shift a consignment of the importdd drink, | :11:05. | :11:07.
the law says his death should be examined by a jury. They also want | :11:08. | :11:10.
the woman who had asked Mr Lewis for his help moving the bottles at a | :11:11. | :11:14.
Southampton shipping firm to be called to give her evidence in | :11:15. | :11:16.
A woman was rescued from a burning car by a passing motorist after she | :11:17. | :11:20.
crashed in West Sussex. The collision happened shortly before | :11:21. | :11:22.
midnight in Common Hill, West Chiltington. It's been reported that | :11:23. | :11:24.
the driver of the car was dragged to safety by a member of the ptblic, | :11:25. | :11:28.
before the emergency servicds arrived. She sustained a cut to her | :11:29. | :11:31.
Still to come in this evening's South Today: the family fight for a | :11:32. | :11:38.
medal ` sibling rivalry at the Commonwealth Games. | :11:39. | :11:46.
Concerns have been raised about safety standards on a level crossing | :11:47. | :11:50.
in Poole. Network Rail says the pedestrianised High Street has by | :11:51. | :11:52.
far the highest risk crossing in the region. But despite the inchdent | :11:53. | :11:57.
rate, there are no plans to change it. Nor is it on the list of level | :11:58. | :12:01.
crossings to be closed. Paul Clifton reports. | :12:02. | :12:13.
25,000 April a day walk across the railway here. You do not have to | :12:14. | :12:19.
watch for a long to spot people racing the following barriers. `` | :12:20. | :12:26.
people. This is the highest risk crossing in the region. Warning | :12:27. | :12:30.
signs are clear and, for people in a hurry, there is a bridge. The | :12:31. | :12:34.
crossing is controlled by CCTV cameras. There is plenty of footage | :12:35. | :12:39.
like this. It is monitored by a signalman 60 miles away in | :12:40. | :12:43.
Basingstoke. Not an easy task. Network Rail would be happy to close | :12:44. | :12:47.
it given the high risk of the crossing, however, it would not be | :12:48. | :12:51.
feasible without an access for all the rich and would involve | :12:52. | :12:55.
compulsory purchase and a htge time redevelopment. This woman works in | :12:56. | :13:01.
the High Street and was caught last month between closed barriers. The | :13:02. | :13:06.
metal piece of the Gateshead to be on the neck. I carried on and looked | :13:07. | :13:12.
back and a lady with a pushchair was stuck on the white part of the date. | :13:13. | :13:21.
Some zero dragged her out. Recent incidents include people | :13:22. | :13:24.
deliberately lifting the barriers, drunks playing chicken with the | :13:25. | :13:27.
trains and a motorised wheelchair which got stuck on the tracks. It is | :13:28. | :13:34.
our highest area of risk on the railway. We do not have unddr | :13:35. | :13:38.
percent control of it. We rdly on members of the public to listen to | :13:39. | :13:42.
warnings and understand risks and take them seriously. Network Rail | :13:43. | :13:46.
has closed 800 crossings in five years. It plans to close 500 more. | :13:47. | :13:50.
But here, Network Rail says there is little more it can do. People will | :13:51. | :13:56.
be red traffic lights, it s`ys, so why do they not obey the red lights | :13:57. | :14:05.
at level crossings? Now let's get the sport. | :14:06. | :14:10.
The Fletcher family have bedn part of the furniture at Pinewood judo | :14:11. | :14:12.
club in Berkshire for gener`tions. In Glasgow, two siblings will be | :14:13. | :14:15.
going for gold, in the latest of our Commonwealth Games profiles I've | :14:16. | :14:18.
been to meet Ben and Megan Fletcher` on the judo mat. | :14:19. | :14:40.
Judo returns to the Commonwdalth Games in Glasgow and these two | :14:41. | :14:48.
siblings are ready to go for glory. Then and Megan Fletcher havd judo in | :14:49. | :14:54.
their blood. In the latest of a long line of stars to emerge frol the | :14:55. | :15:05.
Pinewood judo club in Berkshire Then is 22 and a recent gold | :15:06. | :15:10.
medallist. His sister, Megan, funds are training by working part`time. | :15:11. | :15:17.
Then competes in the under 000 kilo class and Megan in the under 70s. | :15:18. | :15:22.
The pair bounce off each other while on the roads during competitions. | :15:23. | :15:26.
Being family helps. It is great Especially more recently as we are | :15:27. | :15:31.
going away together it is good to have someone, obviously all your | :15:32. | :15:37.
team`mates are with you, but I never get as nervous with anybody else. If | :15:38. | :15:43.
somebody is also a good judo player and goes away with you and watches | :15:44. | :15:49.
how you fight, it is like lhving with your coach, almost. Thhs club | :15:50. | :15:56.

ingrained in you as a Pinewood player. He always expected xou to do | :16:20. | :16:22.

say it, but he would be protd and want us to do well and reprdsent the | :16:32. | :16:37.
club. The siblings are aiming high in Glasgow. I want to be on the top | :16:38. | :16:43.
the podium and it will not be easy. But I believe I can do it. We both | :16:44. | :16:53.
could. We could both get medals Very good luck to them. | :16:54. | :16:59.
Southampton have turned down an offer from Liverpool for defender | :17:00. | :17:02.
Dejan Lovren. The offer falls well short of the 20 million pounds which | :17:03. | :17:05.
has been reported. Meanwhild Saints fans were handed a small boost today | :17:06. | :17:08.
amid unsettling times the tdam unveiled its new first team shirt | :17:09. | :17:10.
today, which revealed a rettrn to the traditional red and white | :17:11. | :17:13.

were chosen to model the shhrts which go on sale on the 19th July. | :17:16. | :17:19.

one of the artist's last wishes With his talents largely | :17:59. | :18:00.
unrecognised, just before hhs death in 1890, Van Gogh said he w`nted to | :18:01. | :18:03.

is adamant it is genuine. Hd hopes it will hang in a permanent gallery | :19:04. | :19:09.
