Hello, I'm Tony Husband. Welcome to South Today. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Revealed ` how the Olympic Games almost got | :00:07. | :00:10.
The event was off for a little while, thinking it would be an | :00:11. | :00:15.
element of brinkmanship and the security would turn up. But they | :00:16. | :00:18.
never did and never looked like they were going to. | :00:19. | :00:20.

And the rally on the road to nowhere? | :00:45. | :00:47.
Fears over the future of ond of the south's biggest motorsport dvents. | :00:48. | :00:56.
It was dubbed the happy and glorious Games, but the London 2012 Olympics | :00:57. | :00:59.
were just hours away from starting with national embarrassment. | :01:00. | :01:02.
The cycling road race, which took in the famous zigzags | :01:03. | :01:05.
of Box Hill in Surrey, nearly didn't happen due to a lack of sectrity. | :01:06. | :01:09.
It's emerged that the RAF h`d to be drafted in to man security fences | :01:10. | :01:13.
on the hill after a lack of cover from the security firm G4S. | :01:14. | :01:17.
Joe Campbell joins us live from Box Hill this evening. | :01:18. | :01:24.
Joe, just how close were we to having the first medal event | :01:25. | :01:27.
It was a very close`run thing, as has emerged in the last 24 hours. | :01:28. | :01:39.
Box Hill was one of those iconic settings that the organising | :01:40. | :01:44.
committee had chosen, to send images of the games around the world. This | :01:45. | :01:49.
setting here in the beautiftl Surrey Hills. They wanted that to be quite | :01:50. | :01:56.
a curtain raiser for the Olxmpics but on the night of the opening | :01:57. | :01:59.
ceremony, the people in the control room were sitting here and `s they | :02:00. | :02:07.
watched the rings being lowdred into the stadium, they got a phone call | :02:08. | :02:14.
from G4S. They had been contracted to make sure there were a lhmited | :02:15. | :02:18.
number of people on site. They said the would not be able to send the | :02:19. | :02:23.
number of people needed. At that stage, the event was called off | :02:24. | :02:28.
That was the really scary moment when all these apocalyptic | :02:29. | :03:16.
Yes, two years after the evdnt, the committee does not exist. There was | :03:17. | :03:17.
a report but it does not Other materials will be destroyed | :03:18. | :04:16.

recently returned home after escorting merchant ships th`t were | :04:21. | :04:25.
transporting chemicals out of Syria. The consignment that's arrived | :04:26. | :04:30.
at Marchwood will be taken to this incinerator at Ellesmere Port | :04:31. | :04:34.
in Cheshire, run A convoy of up to 15 lorries is | :04:35. | :04:37.
expected to transport This afternoon a Ministry of Defence | :04:38. | :04:43.
source said the type of chemicals involved are rdgularly | :04:44. | :04:48.
transported by road in the TK. It's dubbed the Silicon Valley | :04:49. | :04:59.
of the south, but is the draw to London proving | :05:00. | :05:01.
too great for new technologx firms? Early stage companies looking | :05:02. | :05:04.
for money and support have told us the Thames Valley simply isn't | :05:05. | :05:07.
geared up to help them grow. That means the region is losing | :05:08. | :05:09.
entrepreneurs in increasing numbers. The technology sector is now | :05:10. | :05:12.
fighting to promote Berkshire and Oxfordshire | :05:13. | :05:16.
in a bid to keep the talent who will Our business correspondent | :05:17. | :05:19.
Alastair Fee has the story. On the River Thames, rowers are | :05:20. | :05:24.
testing the technology of one This clothing has been designed to | :05:25. | :05:28.
help the wearer perform better, and orders are coming in | :05:29. | :05:33.
from all over the world. At the moment, this new bushness is | :05:34. | :05:36.
based at Reading University For me, it's about having a network, | :05:37. | :05:39.
science and tech based, having resources that we can access, | :05:40. | :05:48.
such as lab space, And I think there are plentx of them | :05:49. | :05:51.
around in the Thames Valley but perhaps not as well`publicised and | :05:52. | :05:57.
it's just not being fully accessed, For an increasing number, | :05:58. | :06:01.
this is where it's at. Tech City ` an area in East London | :06:02. | :06:08.
that's become the place to be. This man started out in the | :06:09. | :06:12.
Thames Valley but has come here He launched a new digital CV and so | :06:13. | :06:15.
far has attracted a year's funding Thames Valley is more | :06:16. | :06:21.
for the large companies like Microsoft and Oracle, where | :06:22. | :06:27.
those are based and headquartered. For start`ups like myself, ht's very | :06:28. | :06:30.
hard because we couldn't find much accelerators and incubators | :06:31. | :06:36.
down there and even if they do exist In a bid to step up, events are now | :06:37. | :06:39.
being held around the Thames Valley. From the autumn, | :06:40. | :06:44.
they'll take place weekly. We're also working with a ntmber | :06:45. | :06:47.
of people in the region who are looking `t tech | :06:48. | :06:50.
hub initiatives to actually try and People don't find | :06:51. | :06:53.
the funding readily available Even though there is lots | :06:54. | :06:56.
of funding available, they `re not finding it easy to navigate | :06:57. | :07:00.
their way around the region. For the lucky few, Reading | :07:01. | :07:02.
University is providing the right That has helped keep | :07:03. | :07:05.
this business afloat. It's one of hundreds | :07:06. | :07:09.
of ideas born in the Thames Valley. They each bring in new jobs | :07:10. | :07:12.
and money to the local economy, something the region cannot afford | :07:13. | :07:15.
to let slip away. What was meant to be a weekdnd | :07:16. | :07:22.
at a music festival with frhends left Georgina Chalmers with burns to | :07:23. | :07:25.
more than a quarter of her body A gas canister exploded as she was | :07:26. | :07:29.
cooking her lunch at Camp Bdstival Now the 27`year`old is prep`ring to | :07:30. | :07:32.
return to the event and is warning other festiv`l`goers | :07:33. | :07:36.
of the potential dangers. A new tent to replace the one | :07:37. | :07:39.
destroyed in an accident whhch could have killed her. | :07:40. | :07:47.
For Georgina Chalmers and hdr friends it's a simple task that | :07:48. | :07:50.
brings back terrible memorids. I will always have scars. Mx leg was | :07:51. | :08:05.
most burnt. But I didn't have to have any skin grafts so I w`s very | :08:06. | :08:10.
lucky and it could have had a really different outcome if I had hnhaled | :08:11. | :08:11.
the gas. This was the 27`year`old from Milton | :08:12. | :08:14.
Keynes 12 months ago. body after a gas canister exploded | :08:15. | :08:16.
at Camp Bestival in Dorset. She'd been cooking lunch and pierced | :08:17. | :08:20.
the cylinder but couldn't sdcure the attachment to stop the gas | :08:21. | :08:23.
escaping. It was like something out of a film. | :08:24. | :08:34.
It slipped and moved towards me and then went up in a huge plumd. | :08:35. | :08:36.
killed in different types of gas explosions since 1995, incltding 13 | :08:37. | :08:41.
last year. Georgina will return to Bestival at | :08:42. | :08:43.
the end of the month to thank those who helped her. | :08:44. | :08:46.
She's also joining others in campaigning for people to bdcome | :08:47. | :08:48.
more aware of the dangers of such equipment. | :08:49. | :08:54.
What we have been lobbying for since 1995 is prime time television | :08:55. | :09:03.
warnings. They would have to feature all the fuels, carbon `based fuels, | :09:04. | :09:07.
all the appliances and all the things that can go wrong and also | :09:08. | :09:11.
all the accommodation will stop everything from houses to tdnts to | :09:12. | :09:15.
I assumed if you could buy something it must be safe but it's not the | :09:16. | :09:27.
case. If you have a gas canhster without a safety valve, don't use | :09:28. | :09:30.
it. It is not worth the risk or pain. | :09:31. | :09:31.
So a harsh lesson learnt but she's planning to spend more time dancing | :09:32. | :09:34.
16 people have been arrested for drugs offences in Bourndmouth in | :09:35. | :09:41.
Police targeted 13 propertids where they suspected drugs were | :09:42. | :09:44.
Today's operation was aimed at tackling street drug dealing and | :09:45. | :09:48.
In very simple terms, crime and disorder is at | :09:49. | :09:54.
But actually our communities tell us they have real concern in rdlation | :09:55. | :09:59.
They tell us, we do, and here's a really good ex`mple of | :10:00. | :10:05.
the kind of action that forls just a part of how we police the area. | :10:06. | :10:09.
Up to 200 jobs could go at Southampton City Council | :10:10. | :10:12.
as the authority consider a further wave of cuts. | :10:13. | :10:14.
The council are currently mdeting to discuss a consultation | :10:15. | :10:16.
Following the budget which was voted on in March, | :10:17. | :10:19.
the council has had to make further savings to address a ?30 million | :10:20. | :10:22.
Adult social care and library budgets look set to be | :10:23. | :10:33.
The city's. Candles could f`ce that is. | :10:34. | :10:38.
Still to come in this evening's South Tod`y: | :10:39. | :10:40.
After cancellation this year, will Rally Dorset ever return? | :10:41. | :10:45.
From the hovercraft to the Spitfire, the South certainly has somd strong | :10:46. | :10:48.
But is it a man's job to create boys' toys? | :10:49. | :10:51.
And when it comes to giving birth, perhaps you'd expect | :10:52. | :10:53.
Today we're looking at our second feature on wh`t it's | :10:54. | :10:58.
like to work in a profession dominated by the opposite sdx. | :10:59. | :11:01.
Seeing a new life being born is a time when my heart flutters | :11:02. | :11:11.
Engineering is a fantastic opportunity to look at and provide | :11:12. | :11:17.
Chris is training to become a midwife. | :11:18. | :11:26.
He's in his second year at Bournemouth University. | :11:27. | :11:28.
She has worked in the construction industry for almost a decadd. | :11:29. | :11:35.
Each of them working in rolds which challenge convention. | :11:36. | :11:41.
I mean, there are definitelx cultural stereotypes and those are | :11:42. | :11:44.
more obvious, actually, out in the construction indtstry. | :11:45. | :11:47.
Barriers do get broken down and you do see more women working | :11:48. | :11:50.
in engineering now than you used to, I think. | :11:51. | :11:53.
There are some cultures and religions that don't allow for | :11:54. | :11:56.
men to see the female body `nd if there is any way that I can overcome | :11:57. | :12:00.
that by providing a female lidwife then that is something I wotld do. | :12:01. | :12:04.
There are 465,000 male engineers in the country. | :12:05. | :12:07.
Just 35,000 female engineers. That is 7%. | :12:08. | :12:11.
But those statistics seem f`vourable compared to the number | :12:12. | :12:15.
There are 105 male midwives in the UK. | :12:16. | :12:20.
That is out of the total of 35, 00. Just 0.3%. | :12:21. | :12:23.
So what difficulties does Fleur face as a woman | :12:24. | :12:29.
I'd say you probably have to have a sense of humour working | :12:30. | :12:35.
on construction sites but generally I've not had `ny | :12:36. | :12:37.
But Chris has encountered discrimination because of hhs sex, | :12:38. | :12:44.
when he was turned away from a female`only breast`fdeding | :12:45. | :12:47.
I was very disheartened bec`use I didn't see myself | :12:48. | :12:51.
as being a male midwife, I saw myself as being a midwife | :12:52. | :12:58.
But, on the whole, health care professionals are very | :12:59. | :13:01.
As a nurse, you can't empathise with everyone who's had maybe cancer | :13:02. | :13:06.
you can't empathise with soleone who's broken a leg. We don't | :13:07. | :13:08.
want to all do those things just so that we can show empathy. | :13:09. | :13:13.
Even though Fleur found her forte as an engineer, she feels it's | :13:14. | :13:17.
important that the next gendration of female scientists is nurtured. | :13:18. | :13:22.
I've been involved going into schools with women into enghneering | :13:23. | :13:25.
programmes and setting challenges to think about how they would plan | :13:26. | :13:28.
I don't think anybody ever really told me to think about | :13:29. | :13:36.
So, what inspires people to break the gender mould? | :13:37. | :13:44.
We've had a lot of infrastrtcture failures due to the extreme rainfall | :13:45. | :13:47.
and flooding, the railway track at Dawlish being washed awax. | :13:48. | :13:50.
Those are exactly the sort of problems and issues I potentially | :13:51. | :13:53.
can work on as a ground enghneer in civil engineering. It re`lly | :13:54. | :13:57.
gives you those opportunitids to make a difference to the world. | :13:58. | :14:01.
I love to see new life coming into the world. | :14:02. | :14:05.
And I love to see the joyous expressions of | :14:06. | :14:10.
a mother and father when thdy meet their baby for the first tile and | :14:11. | :14:14.
People don't question having a male doctor or nurse but do male | :14:15. | :14:22.
We'd love to hear your thoughts Get in touch via our Facebook page. | :14:23. | :14:39.
Some of the South's best known politicians made way for a new | :14:40. | :14:42.
Havant MP David Willitts has resigned as the | :14:43. | :14:45.
He'll also step down at the next election. | :14:46. | :14:48.
There was good news for Portsmouth North MP Penny Mourdant. | :14:49. | :14:51.
She secures her first ministerial role. | :14:52. | :14:53.
A series of other appointments could benefit the city. | :14:54. | :14:56.
Earlier I spoke to our political editor Peter Henley and started | :14:57. | :14:59.
by asking him why the reshuffle was so significant here in the south. | :15:00. | :15:10.
Because so many Conservativd MPs come from the south of Engl`nd. What | :15:11. | :15:14.
might sound like a game of snakes and hot ladders `` snakes and | :15:15. | :15:21.
ladders could make a real ilpact to the lives of their constitudnts | :15:22. | :15:25.
Portsmouth is the most clear example, where the loss of warship | :15:26. | :15:28.
building could make a real difference. They get a triple boost. | :15:29. | :15:35.
Michael Fallon, who was the Minister for Portsmouth, now is Secrdtary of | :15:36. | :15:39.
State for defence. His repl`cement, Mark Hancock, is an ally of George | :15:40. | :15:43.
Osborne, which might unlock some money. And Penny Mourdant h`s been | :15:44. | :15:52.
giving `` given at a ministdrial job at the department that gives money | :15:53. | :15:59.
to councils. Nick Gibb is ghven a second chance. For those behng | :16:00. | :16:01.
sacked today, maybe that is a message. If you stay loyal, you | :16:02. | :16:07.
might be able to come back. For David Willitts... I don't think the | :16:08. | :16:20.
problem has been men losing out to women. I think it is import`nt we | :16:21. | :16:26.
get fairer representation does not when they have the talent and | :16:27. | :16:34.
abilities. David Willitts bowing out. Where is the new blood coming | :16:35. | :16:37.
from? Claire Perry is transport m`ny `` | :16:38. | :16:44.
minister. Will she do something about the A303? A new Attorney | :16:45. | :16:50.
General. Perhaps the Conservatives are trying to help themselvds. Other | :16:51. | :16:56.
new faces were promoted. Ed Vasey, Desmond Swain. Labour is a ` lot of | :16:57. | :17:04.
this is just window dressing. Overall, the picture is rel`tively | :17:05. | :17:11.
small number of women promoted and some rather cosmetic changes. For | :17:12. | :17:16.
example, the Cabinet has ten people who attend the Cabinet, including | :17:17. | :17:21.
the number of women who havd been promoted but I'm actually in the | :17:22. | :17:28.
Cabinet, it is more cosmetic. More names you may not have heard of | :17:29. | :17:32.
unless you live in their constituency but with the election | :17:33. | :17:36.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has begun an inquiry | :17:37. | :17:40.
into an incident in which a ferry from Portsmouth to the Channel | :17:41. | :17:45.
The owners of the Commodore Clipper have just told us that the damage is | :17:46. | :17:49.
so bad that the ferry needs to go to a dry dock for repairs. | :17:50. | :17:52.
Our transport correspondent Paul Clifton is in Portsmouth. | :17:53. | :17:54.
It is certainly more serious than it was first thought. | :17:55. | :17:58.
The Commodore Clipper appardntly scraped the sea floor | :17:59. | :18:03.
But this evening we've been told the ferry will have to go into dry | :18:04. | :18:11.
The biggest ferry serving the Channel Islands is going to be | :18:12. | :18:15.
out of action for a couple of weeks, and quite possibly longer. | :18:16. | :18:19.
Right at the height of the summer tourist season. | :18:20. | :18:23.
This has been a dramatic dax for Condor, | :18:24. | :18:25.
Yes, Condor has done a deal with the government in Jersey and Gudrnsey | :18:26. | :18:33.
That in turn clears the way for Condor to buy a new, larger | :18:34. | :18:39.
It will replace two smaller fast ferries, which are getting old. | :18:40. | :18:47.
With one ferry instead of two, Condor will no longer need to sail | :18:48. | :18:52.
The new ferry won't fit the berth in Weymouth. | :18:53. | :18:57.
Creating another one would cost ?10 million. | :18:58. | :18:59.
The council which owns the port says it cannot afford that. | :19:00. | :19:04.
However, Condor would face a much higher fuel | :19:05. | :19:06.
68% of our passengers choosd pool but we are looking at both ports. If | :19:07. | :19:24.
it was Weymouth we have madd it clear they would have to make some | :19:25. | :19:27.
changes to the birth to accommodate the new vessel. It is unlikdly we | :19:28. | :19:32.
would work with both ports though we need between now and Easter to | :19:33. | :19:37.
So it's now a beauty contest between Weymouth and Poole. | :19:38. | :19:41.
One port or the other will soon be losing its ferry service to | :19:42. | :19:44.
For many parents, having a child with autism is diffhcult. | :19:45. | :19:51.
But for parents from black, Asian and ethnic backgrounds trying to | :19:52. | :19:55.
access services because of language barriers has proved a big issue | :19:56. | :19:59.
Today a new report has shown many families have been left feeling | :20:00. | :20:04.
isolated from their communities and in need of more support. | :20:05. | :20:07.
Sophia Seth has been to meet a family from Portsmouth who have | :20:08. | :20:10.
It is often described as a hidden disability but the impact on this | :20:11. | :20:33.
man and his family is not hhdden. When he was diagnosed as a baby his | :20:34. | :20:38.
mother says the family found it hard to accept. The wouldn't belheve it | :20:39. | :20:52.
was real and they thought hd would come out of it. She was not accepted | :20:53. | :20:56.
by her local Sri Lankan comlunity which is why she moved to H`mpshire. | :20:57. | :21:01.
It is difficult because thex love gossiping and they always think I | :21:02. | :21:04.
