I don't want to be saddled with the reputation of being the only England | :00:38. | :00:44.

70 years ago today holiday makers celebrate the end of the ban | :00:49. | :00:53.
For a year it's stood empty ` but South Today has been told that | :00:54. | :01:03.
a decision on the future of the old Ford Transit factory | :01:04. | :01:05.
at Swaythling near Southampton could be made by the end of this year. | :01:06. | :01:10.
It's 12 months since the 60`acre site shut after 41 | :01:11. | :01:13.
The latest economic figures show that the UK economy grew 0.8% | :01:14. | :01:20.
in the second quarter and has now recovered the ground | :01:21. | :01:25.
Our reporter Lewis Coombes has been looking at what's next | :01:26. | :01:31.
Ford has a long association with Southampton. | :01:32. | :01:37.
Ford parts were manufactured here from 1953. | :01:38. | :01:46.
The Ford transit has been built in the city since 1972. The 1,000,000th | :01:47. | :01:50.
van was ill soon after. The city was dubbed "the home | :01:51. | :01:53.
of the Transit" with the van having The plant once employed thousands | :01:54. | :01:56.
of workers, but in February 2009 Ford announced the workforce was to | :01:57. | :02:00.
be halved, from 1,000 to 500 with In October 2012 it was announced | :02:01. | :02:03.
that the factory would close, with Ford say that all employees either | :02:04. | :02:07.
chose redeployment within the company, voluntary redundancy | :02:08. | :02:11.
or early retirement. The company is also investing ?12 | :02:12. | :02:16.
million in a Vehicle Distribution Centre | :02:17. | :02:18.
at Southampton docks and a Vehicle Refurbishment Centre on the plant | :02:19. | :02:20.
site, employing 134 former workers. But for the last year | :02:21. | :02:24.
the factory has laid empty. I have been finding out what is next | :02:25. | :02:35.
for the site that has played such an important role in the history of | :02:36. | :02:36.
Southampton. From bustling production line to | :02:37. | :02:38.
abandoned industrial building. A year has passed, | :02:39. | :02:40.
but the future of Ford's site Over a year now and they | :02:41. | :02:42.
have done nothing about it. I mean, the youngsters in there, 35, | :02:43. | :02:50.
40 years old, It is a good building, it is there | :02:51. | :02:55.
and it is suitable for use so why not use it and use it for what it | :02:56. | :03:02.
was originally designed for? I think given the complexity | :03:03. | :03:09.
of the site and the numbers of players involved, | :03:10. | :03:12.
things are going very well. It is an important site, | :03:13. | :03:14.
an important strategic site for the city | :03:15. | :03:16.
and we need to get things right. Talks have been ongoing, | :03:17. | :03:18.
but ownership Ford is responsible for 40% | :03:19. | :03:20.
of the land. And a further 40% is owned | :03:21. | :03:25.
by a development company. For progress to be made, | :03:26. | :03:32.
they all need to agree. One option is | :03:33. | :03:35.
for another large company to come Slightly concerned because | :03:36. | :03:37.
if that employer goes bust, I would like to see more than one | :03:38. | :03:42.
employer, not necessarily 100 Ultimately, the gates being closed | :03:43. | :03:48.
has also had a knock`on effect We are hoping they will do | :03:49. | :03:52.
something useful with the site. And if a new business comes in, | :03:53. | :03:56.
hopefully we will become busier, The site generates hundreds | :03:57. | :04:00.
of thousands of pounds in business rates for the council, so it's in | :04:01. | :04:08.
their interest to find new tenants. But with real estate prices | :04:09. | :04:12.
on the up, perhaps it's been in Ford's interest to hold | :04:13. | :04:15.
on to the land a little longer. I think the market is going to firm | :04:16. | :04:19.
over the next couple of months. There is good reason to think | :04:20. | :04:22.
the economy is going to be strong, more jobs created, so the likelihood | :04:23. | :04:25.
is the market will be stronger, rents will be higher and the price | :04:26. | :04:28.
of lands will be higher as well. Ford's eventual departure | :04:29. | :04:33.
didn't come as a surprise. Critics say the council should have | :04:34. | :04:35.
started work a lot sooner We have known for a good amount | :04:36. | :04:38.
of time before last year that the plant was going to close | :04:39. | :04:44.
so they could have got their ducks Ford employees and contractors | :04:45. | :04:47.
continue to decommission the plant. And an announcement on the future | :04:48. | :04:53.
of the site is expected It's likely to be home to another | :04:54. | :04:56.
business, rather than used But | :04:57. | :05:00.
for now it's very much the former Lewis Coombes, BBC South Today, | :05:01. | :05:05.
Swaythling. Police have described it as | :05:06. | :05:12.
"one of the most disturbing cases in This afternoon Ben Blakeley, | :05:13. | :05:15.
the man found guilty of murdering Jayden Parkinson, | :05:16. | :05:18.
has been given a life sentence. He's been told he'll spend | :05:19. | :05:22.
at least 20 years in prison. Blakeley killed Jayden ` who was | :05:23. | :05:25.
pregnant ` last December, and buried Today, a jury failed to reach | :05:26. | :05:28.
a verdict on Ben's younger brother Jake, who faced a charge | :05:29. | :05:34.
of unlawfully burying a body. We will never be able to find an | :05:35. | :05:49.
answer for the evil that claimed Jade's life. We will never be able | :05:50. | :05:58.
to find forgiveness for the evil that murdered Jade and concealed her | :05:59. | :06:02.
body in such a cold and calculating and callous manner and we will never | :06:03. | :06:06.
get to see Jayden Parkinson grew up, get married and have children. | :06:07. | :06:11.
This is our life sentence. It is time for Ben Blakeley to start his. | :06:12. | :06:13.
Thank you. A haul of jewellery | :06:14. | :06:16.
and two pistols were found among scores of items uncovered at | :06:17. | :06:18.
the bottom of a pond near Worthing. Specialist police search teams were | :06:19. | :06:22.
called to Whitebeam Wood in Durrington | :06:23. | :06:24.
after a dog pulled out a jacket Sussex Police say | :06:25. | :06:26.
the items may have been stolen A coroner is writing to prosecutors | :06:27. | :06:31.
regarding the way they look It follows the death of | :06:32. | :06:37.
Frances Andrade, who took an overdose soon after | :06:38. | :06:43.
testifying against a music teacher He was convicted and jailed | :06:44. | :06:46.
but she didn't live to see that. She died after hearing some | :06:47. | :06:52.
of the charges had been dismissed. It took a lot for Francis Andrade to | :06:53. | :06:55.
confront the demons of her past. In the end, | :06:56. | :07:02.
it all proved too much for her. She killed herself a few days | :07:03. | :07:05.
after testifying against a music teacher who had | :07:06. | :07:09.
sexually abused her as a child. It happened while she was a pupil | :07:10. | :07:12.
at Chetham's School of Music The teacher was eventually convicted | :07:13. | :07:14.
and jailed by a court in Manchester. But Francis Andrade didn't | :07:15. | :07:21.
live to see that day. Partway through his trial, | :07:22. | :07:25.
the judge instructed the jury to acquit him on some charges due to | :07:26. | :07:27.
a legal technicality. After reading about this, | :07:28. | :07:32.
Francis Andrade took So does her husband regret her | :07:33. | :07:34.
becoming involved in the trial? I can't say that because | :07:35. | :07:40.
for one reason she needed to Of course she never did actually | :07:41. | :07:44.
ask to be involved in any of this. It was a friend who | :07:45. | :07:53.
originally told the police. Mr Andrade had told an inquest in | :07:54. | :07:58.
Surrey that his wife spiralled into She had taken a number | :07:59. | :08:02.
of drugs overdoses. The coroner Richard Travis said he | :08:03. | :08:10.
was satisfied that Miss Andrade had died as a result | :08:11. | :08:13.
of taking a drugs overdose. However, he could not be satisfied | :08:14. | :08:15.
that she had intended to kill herself and so he did not record | :08:16. | :08:18.
a verdict of suicide. He said that he would be writing to | :08:19. | :08:20.
the director of public prosecutions regarding the | :08:21. | :08:23.
advice given to vulnerable witnesses and the way they are kept involved | :08:24. | :08:27.
in the progress of those trials. An industrial tribunal has been | :08:28. | :08:36.
hearing about a mistake in the wording of a business | :08:37. | :08:38.
contract which led to Worthing Borough Council paying hundreds | :08:39. | :08:41.
of thousands of pounds compensation The council sacked the senior | :08:42. | :08:43.
officer it held responsible. But he believes he was made | :08:44. | :08:50.
a scapegoat and is claiming unfair dismissal | :08:51. | :08:53.
at a hearing in Southampton. This dispute centres on a ten`year | :08:54. | :08:56.
contract Worthing Borough Council had with the NCP to run the town's | :08:57. | :09:02.
multistorey car parks on their behalf. In 2009, following | :09:03. | :09:08.
complaints from motorists, the council wanted to reduce the parking | :09:09. | :09:11.
charges. They negotiated a change in the contract and agreed to | :09:12. | :09:15.
compensate NCP for some of the lost revenue. The council officer in | :09:16. | :09:19.
charge was executive head of technical services Cliff Harrison, | :09:20. | :09:24.
seen here in the glasses. Last November he was sacked by the | :09:25. | :09:26.
council for gross misconduct. The council leader said in a statement | :09:27. | :09:30.
that councillors had instructed officers to limit the compensation | :09:31. | :09:33.
liability to a maximum of ?152,000 but he said in fact compensation was | :09:34. | :09:40.
left open`ended. As a result, the council faced potentially having to | :09:41. | :09:44.
pay NCP ?1.5 million. In March this year, the council reached an | :09:45. | :09:50.
out`of`court settlement with NCP which was kept secret. Papers | :09:51. | :09:53.
submitted to the tribunal referred to a figure of ?740,000 being sought | :09:54. | :09:57.
by NCP at the High Court, but they don't confirm if that was the final | :09:58. | :10:03.
settlement. At today's hearing, Mr Harrison's lawyer suggested he was | :10:04. | :10:07.
being made a scapegoat. The council denied that. Mr Harrison's case is | :10:08. | :10:11.
that other senior officers and lawyers were involved in drawing up | :10:12. | :10:15.
a contract amendment and he believes there were serious flaws in the | :10:16. | :10:18.
disciplinary process. He is claiming unfair dismissal but the hearing was | :10:19. | :10:20.
adjourned to October 3. Sussex Police says it will review | :10:21. | :10:32.
any new information about a fatal crash involving | :10:33. | :10:34.
a serving officer who has been Stewart Chalmers' car struck | :10:35. | :10:37.
and killed Luke Bland and injured his friend | :10:38. | :10:41.
Ben Blackfield five years ago. The off duty officer was found not | :10:42. | :10:45.
guilty of causing death It was a jury that acquitted Stewart | :10:46. | :11:01.
Chalmers, a traffic officer, of causing death by dangerous driving. | :11:02. | :11:06.
One night in February 2009 when he was off`duty, his car killed Luke | :11:07. | :11:11.
Bland. Look's friend then black field was injured. An MP to the | :11:12. | :11:14.
Commons this week the not guilty verdict was a terrible miscarriage | :11:15. | :11:19.
of justice. If it had been established that far from being the | :11:20. | :11:22.
responsible driver he claimed Stewart Chalmers drove his car a | :11:23. | :11:26.
legally in a knot roadworthy condition and did not bother to | :11:27. | :11:29.
check the legality of his tyres even when warned they were close to the | :11:30. | :11:34.
limit, the main line of his defence would have fallen apart. The Commons | :11:35. | :11:37.
heard that after the trial the families of the young men did | :11:38. | :11:40.
research into the officer's car for a civil action. In Parliament Esther | :11:41. | :11:45.
Hendry said four months before the crash PC charmers' are field its MOT | :11:46. | :11:52.
because a front tyre was not legal. It was her at the car was taken away | :11:53. | :11:56.
and driven off and had 55 miles without a valid MOT and insurance | :11:57. | :12:01.
before the front tyre what replaced. Mr Hendry said it eventually passed | :12:02. | :12:06.
it's MOT but with an advisory notice that the rear tyres were close to | :12:07. | :12:10.
the legal threshold and at the time of the college and those tyres were | :12:11. | :12:14.
below their legal limit. The Commons her Sussex Police accept they should | :12:15. | :12:17.
have done things differently in the case and the Chief Constable has met | :12:18. | :12:22.
families. He has given a personal apology to the family and an | :12:23. | :12:26.
assurance that we will review any new information that comes to light | :12:27. | :12:30.
as a result of the civil proceedings. Families look and then | :12:31. | :12:34.
welcome any future reviewed by the police. `` families of Luke Bland | :12:35. | :12:42.

some of the complaints were well founded, there was no misconduct on | :12:59. | :13:03.
the part of the officer. The chase was investigated thoroughly by | :13:04. | :13:05.
Sussex Police, it would appear the case was treated with at least as | :13:06. | :13:10.
much integrity as any other member of the public who would have been at | :13:11. | :13:14.
the wheel. The Police Federation which represented Esther charmers | :13:15. | :13:18.
stressed the officer had been found not guilty of any offence, there was | :13:19. | :13:23.
no breach of professional standards, the investigation had been properly | :13:24. | :13:31.
conducted. `` Mr charmers. `` Mr Stewart Chalmers. | :13:32. | :13:37.

89 members of staff are losing their jobs at Hatts Coaches, | :13:40. | :13:43.
Wiltshire Council says it's engaged another firm to run the park | :13:44. | :13:47.
Hatts' daily bus services in and around Salisbury have been taken | :13:48. | :13:50.
It is easy to say it has run out of cash but that is the problem. We | :13:51. | :13:56.
first got involved one week ago today and have been working hard to | :13:57. | :13:58.
see if there was a solution. Unfortunately, there was not. It was | :13:59. | :14:03.
too late in the day and it has left us with no option other than to | :14:04. | :14:09.
close the business. Still to come, if you are wondering what to do this | :14:10. | :14:11.
weekend, we have the weather forecast. One more day to enjoy the | :14:12. | :14:16.

match any minute. It is very exciting. | :14:58. | :15:02.
I am excited, I am going on Monday. I hope they can play a bit better. | :15:03. | :15:09.
Some of that in a moment. First, some news. | :15:10. | :15:11.

Daniel Rivers from England has got a new Commonwealth Games record in | :15:44. | :16:03.

down to the wire ` he claimed bronze A shoot off was the undoing of | :16:09. | :16:12.
hotly`tipped teenager Amber Hill. She just missed out on reaching the | :16:13. | :16:20.
final. An injury meant Wokingham's | :16:21. | :16:22.
Megan Fletcher had to have her face taped up midway through her | :16:23. | :16:24.
under 70kg judo semi`final. It could have easily thrown her ` | :16:25. | :16:27.

My first 100 was here, we had some exciting 2020 finals day in Somerset | :18:24. | :18:30.
as well so I enjoyed the ground, I like the place and it will be a | :18:31. | :18:34.
place that holds some special memories come Sunday morning. | :18:35. | :18:36.
But he joins a squad struggling for consistent form with bat or ball | :18:37. | :18:40.
They are hurting and disappointed that they are not playing their | :18:41. | :18:48.
brand of cricket and getting the results they wanted but there is the | :18:49. | :18:52.
underlying determination from everyone to turn that around and put | :18:53. | :18:53.
results right. What could make | :18:54. | :18:55.
a real difference to the result is the wicket, it's reportedly looking | :18:56. | :18:58.
to be in better condition than the first two matches, so we could | :18:59. | :19:00.
see some really exciting cricket. Hampshire's chairman hopes | :19:01. | :19:07.
the quality of that wicket and a successful test match could be | :19:08. | :19:09.
the beginning of even bigger things I would still want to stage an Ashes | :19:10. | :19:12.
Test match, I saddled with the reputation of being | :19:13. | :19:23.
the only England Test match ground that has never been awarded an Ashes | :19:24. | :19:28.
Test match. We must put our best foot forward and put a strong case. | :19:29. | :19:33.
Unusually this Test starts on a Sunday. | :19:34. | :19:35.
Can England deliver ` and can a new venue deliver a classic contest? | :19:36. | :19:38.
Portsmouth's young boxing star Ebonie Jones has made it through | :19:39. | :19:43.
to the final of the European Women's Junior Championships. | :19:44. | :19:46.
Ebonie, who's 15 and here in the blue, trains at the Heart | :19:47. | :19:48.
She beat Italian Lucy Garafalo on home turf at the competition | :19:49. | :19:53.
in Assisi with a unanimous points decision. | :19:54. | :19:56.
Ebonie won gold at the event last year and faces Polish boxer | :19:57. | :20:00.
Berkshire synchronised swimmer Andrea Holland is returning to | :20:01. | :20:08.
competition for the first time in 35 years. | :20:09. | :20:10.
56`year`old Andrea is a former British and European champion, | :20:11. | :20:12.
She was working as a commentator at London 2012 when she was inspired | :20:13. | :20:21.
The key reason for me was too maybe inspire a slightly older generation. | :20:22. | :20:35.
It is never too late to get back into sport. I feel like I'm a | :20:36. | :20:41.
different person than I was six months ago for the fact that I am | :20:42. | :20:45.
fitter again. Good on her! She is not the oldest woman in the pool. | :20:46. | :20:47.
Now, earlier this year we spoke to a record breaking swimmer ` | :20:48. | :20:50.
who's still taking a regular dip at the ripe old age of 99. | :20:51. | :20:53.
John Harrison has notched up five world records | :20:54. | :20:55.
And how did he celebrate this milestone birthday? | :20:56. | :21:00.
By jumping in for a swim at his local pool in Surrey of course! | :21:01. | :21:07.
Happy birthday to John. Isn't that brilliant? The secret to his youth. | :21:08. | :21:16.
Congratulations, John. It has been another lovely day. For many it is | :21:17. | :21:20.
the start of the summer holidays. Thousands have flocked to | :21:21. | :21:27.
the south's beaches to cool off But it's a luxury that wasn't | :21:28. | :21:30.
available to those who lived through the Second World War, | :21:31. | :21:35.
until this day 70`years`ago. But in 1944 it was | :21:36. | :21:37.
a very different picture. Mines and anti`tank obstacles | :21:38. | :21:41.
littered Bournemouth beach as a precaution against | :21:42. | :21:43.
the threat of German invasion There was panic, so the beach was | :21:44. | :21:54.
cleared, or the places of entertainment were closed so that | :21:55. | :21:56.
any landing craft would be obstructed. | :21:57. | :21:58.
There was a beach bathing ban in place from 1939 right up to this | :21:59. | :22:01.
After D`Day, things eased and eventually the road came, you can | :22:02. | :22:12.
open the beach. They allow the people to go through in their | :22:13. | :22:15.
hundreds with their deckchairs just to sample being on the beach once | :22:16. | :22:17.
more. Today, the picture is very different | :22:18. | :22:21.
as hundreds came to the beach to enjoy the seaside breeze | :22:22. | :22:24.
and even a few who went for a swim. It is a packed beach. You can see | :22:25. | :22:32.
what it means for families. We live nearby so when the weather is nice, | :22:33. | :22:35.
it is the perfect race to come with the little ones and just enjoy it. | :22:36. | :22:40.
We have nice weather, which is not very often in England. | :22:41. | :22:43.
And the sun is shining on Bournemouth who are already | :22:44. | :22:45.
benefiting from a boost in trade due to the good weather. | :22:46. | :22:48.
Half ?1 billion per year is spent in Bournemouth that the results of | :22:49. | :22:53.
tourism and for people who cannot remember half a billion, ?1000 for | :22:54. | :22:57.
every minute of every day of the year, that is so much tourism is | :22:58. | :22:59.
worth. Mines and barbed wire are long past | :23:00. | :23:02.
dangers, but still a warning to those who are | :23:03. | :23:04.
heading to the beach this summer. We advise people to stay hydrated | :23:05. | :23:11.
and stay out of the sun from 11 until three. This he is not too | :23:12. | :23:16.
treacherous, but the tide will increase, so there is the potential | :23:17. | :23:20.
for people to get into difficulty. `` the sea is not to treacherous. | :23:21. | :23:23.
In this year of poignant anniversaries, this is | :23:24. | :23:25.
a town where generations of holiday makers are united by a common love | :23:26. | :23:28.
I think it will be packed tomorrow. Yes. | :23:29. | :23:38.
We've had some lovely weather photos as always but today we've gone for a | :23:39. | :23:41.
bit of a theme ` your pets cooling off from the scorching heat ` | :23:42. | :23:45.
lots more on our Facebook page, but here are three that caught our eye. | :23:46. | :23:48.
Jack the dog getting a soaking ` thanks to Alicia Penman | :23:49. | :23:51.
This could have been one soggy moggy if Kelly Wadmore had turned | :23:52. | :23:56.
And Michelle Hare captured this picture | :23:57. | :24:03.
And look at this one. This is a picture of art to this is a picture | :24:04. | :24:20.
of bit of a star. He took part in Wednesday's Commonwealth Games | :24:21. | :24:22.
opening ceremony and I think he'll led in both Bangladesh and then | :24:23. | :24:26.
Trinidad and obey God. What a gorgeous dog. `` Trinidad and will | :24:27. | :24:39.
be go. `` Trinidad and Tobago. Some heavy downpours this afternoon | :24:40. | :24:45.
with some thunder and lightning as well. The band working its way | :24:46. | :24:48.
across. This pocket here seeing quite a bit of thunder and lightning | :24:49. | :24:52.
in the last 30 minutes. Those thunderstorms tend to ease away as | :24:53. | :24:57.
we go through this evening. Integer date we can expect drier conditions | :24:58. | :25:01.
to develop in the coming hours. `` into tonight. Once the showers clear | :25:02. | :25:06.
we are left with, not quite cloud free skies, eastern parts seeing | :25:07. | :25:10.
some mist and murk, a few more breaks to the West. 17 or 18 degrees | :25:11. | :25:14.
below two nights of feeling very sticky, muddy conditions once again | :25:15. | :25:20.
tonight. Saturday we start the day with perhaps some of the low cloud | :25:21. | :25:23.
once again in the East but that breaks up fairly regularly and we | :25:24. | :25:26.
are left with another day of good sunny spells. Nice break finds sunny | :25:27. | :25:30.
conditions. Temperatures once again peeking into the mid`to high 20s saw | :25:31. | :25:37.
26, 20 7 degrees possible. The chance of a shower for the eastern | :25:38. | :25:40.
parts but most of them in the east of London. Tomorrow night a dry and | :25:41. | :25:46.
quiet affair, we will see a little cloud around, again the temperatures | :25:47. | :25:49.
staying in the high teens and so it will feel hot and sticky once again. | :25:50. | :25:53.
But the changes on its way as we head into Sunday, we have a cold | :25:54. | :25:57.
front working its way in, so Sunday will be a sunny spells and scattered | :25:58. | :26:02.
showers but some fresh air arriving as the cold front sweeps through and | :26:03. | :26:06.
into the new working week we have cooler conditions, one or two | :26:07. | :26:08.
showers but some good bright and sunny intervals as well. Just a | :26:09. | :26:13.
little cooler than recently. Plenty of events to look forward to this | :26:14. | :26:14.
weekend. The Worthing Filipino Festival | :26:15. | :26:15.
is taking place tomorrow. There'll be some warm sunshine | :26:16. | :26:17.
on offer as the town celebrates the Philippines with food, | :26:18. | :26:19.
music and sports. And in Stockbridge near Winchester | :26:20. | :26:21.
there's an open gardens event ` the perfect place to enjoy a cream | :26:22. | :26:24.
tea in the sunshine, though it'll Your summery for the coming days, | :26:25. | :26:37.
not doing too badly, temperatures cool enough on Sunday into the new | :26:38. | :26:41.
working week. Just before we go, a look ahead | :26:42. | :26:41.
to next week on South Today. Preparations are under way for this | :26:42. | :26:45.
year's New Forest and Hampshire County Show, which attracts | :26:46. | :26:47.
around 100,000 visitors each year. And alongside all the agricultural | :26:48. | :26:51.
and countryside exhibits, We've teamed up with | :26:52. | :26:54.
Southampton Solent University to build a complete studio | :26:55. | :26:58.
so that you can have a go at being And we've got very high hopes | :26:59. | :27:01.
for our entry in the exhibitors' No guesses as to who that is! I | :27:02. | :27:18.
think it is my best side. That is it from us, have a great weekend, more | :27:19. | :27:21.
from us at 10:25 p.m.. | :27:22. | :27:26. |
