Today's figures show a slight rise in the numbers getting

the top A`star grade ` although the overall pass r`te fell

For all those who make the grade, it's a thrilling moment.

But for those who overcome dxtra hurdles to succeed,

We have two reports this evdning, featuring youngsters who've been

tested outside the classrool as well as in it.

Our first is from Steve Humphrey in Chichester.

Sophie and her friends admitted to feeling more than a little nervous

as they arrive to get their results at this school in Chichester.

It's very, very important because there is so many different

things that I want to do with my life and most of them start off with

this gateway through university and studying history, so waiting for the

results for these past couple of months has been really

nerve`wracking and has built up till today.

Sophie had to overcome at the death of her mother frol cancer

as she studied for her A`levels in theology, history and liter`ture.

And do you think mum is looking down on you?

And she definitely very protd I think.

I haven't checked UCAS yet but I am feeling very nervots.

When he eventually got the all`important

results, Jeremy was delightdd with some very good grades.

It is literally the best fedling I have ever had.

The sheer shock of doing so well, number one at the moment for sure.

It is not just about being successful in the exams restlts

It is also about developing into young people

It has been a very good day for youngsters here

at the school in Chichester, with an increase in the number of students

After seven years of secondary education,

Here in Bournemouth there h`ve also been trials and tribul`tions.

Of course getting good gradds is always an achievement to be proud

of but some students like Kheran here have had to work that luch

Kieran was bullied at school and told he'd never make it.

Switching to college changed everything.

Actually I had teachers tell me I would never get into university

and now I'm going to one of the top universities in the entire

I think the younger version of me would be very proud of me rhght now.

She has battled anxiety and confidence issues and w`s

Considering I did not get alazing GCSEs,

I did not think I could do ht but I did, so I worked hard and I got it.

And then there is this studdnt, who came to Bournemouth to study

from Uzbekistan only the last year and got straight As.

I struggled from the beginnhng but I tried really hard to achievd that.

I came from another country as well and I know how he felt when he came

here but he made really massive progress since he started this year

You want everyone to do well, of course you do.

But when you see what peopld have been through, you just go wow,

With a 100 percent pass ratd, there is a lot to be proud of here.

But some have really beaten the odds.

With 30,000 extra universitx places made available by the government,

and no limit to the numbers of A and B grade students that universities

can recruit record numbers will be heading for university this year.

But Higher Education isn't for everyone ` and one enterprising

company in Hampshire is offdring dozens of jobs to school

and college leavers keen to get down to business straightaw`y.

Despite having more than enough GSCE's and A levels to get

into a good university, Natasha Hookings, is studying

for an Advanced Insurance Dhploma at Be Wiser instead.

there is so many companies that need to be doing more to do this sort of

graduate scheme to offer th`t is to young people. Something that

furthers education that does not leave them in a lot of debt and give

them experience as well. Thhs insurance brokerage is expanding

rapidly. Moving staff into this office this morning. But struggled

to find enough qualified professionals to keep up with its

growth. Unfortunately the insurance industry has not invested in itself

in bringing in people so we have had to do it ourselves. In some respects

it has been a very good expdrience because we are training people in

the modes and methods that we want them to use. The most important

thing is for youngsters to come up with and get letters after their

names to feel like they are qualified and they are achidving

something to be useful to gdt a job which is obviously quite difficult.

I did not want the debt of going to university, I want to work

experience. A lot of people I know who went to university came out and

they could not find any work because they did not have any work

experience. I'm deftly don't stick with the programme for the three

years. `` I am definitely going to stick with the programme. They

recruited 20 trainees at thhs summer and there are another 70 vacancies

here for school and college leavers. Failing GP practices face closure

a Sussex man was unlawfully killed outside a nightclub in Brighton his

brother has met the Police `nd Crime Commissioner for the county to seek

her help in finally getting justice. Jay Abatan died from serious head

injuries when he fell after being punched while waiting for a taxi but

or no one has ever been prosecuted. But the person, or people,

who punched Jay Abatan have not The 42`year`old tax specialhst

in Brighton after he fell to Jay's brother asks,

European rules could put an end to two hundred years of growing

watercress on his small farl. The Environment Agency has told him

year there will be no watercress. None has been planted because

Daphne Belt has been doing today. Daphne went for a 25 minute swim in

the sea, then a 45 minute bhke ride, And that's not all `

this is her seventy fifth triathlon Chrissy Sturt went

along to see her finish the task. At 75, a defiant Daphne is far

from slowing down. How does a daily dose

of triathlons sound? I have done a mini triathlon

every day since then. A tough front crawl

through choppy waters. I know it looks a bit rough but I

love that feeling of lifting up and So far,

Daphne has raised nearly ?6000 for Really it is amazing,

incredible what Daphne is able to I just want to give you a bht
