Waving goodbye to Weymouth ` Condor pulls out | :00:10. | :00:13.
and takes millions of pounds of business along the coast to Poole. | :00:14. | :00:22.
On We are going to miss it, no doubt, but we have to move on and | :00:23. | :00:27.
see Weymouth will be here long after Condor. | :00:28. | :00:30.
The state of schools on the Isle of Wight ` it's been a year | :00:31. | :00:34.
since drastic action began to tackle rock bottom results. | :00:35. | :00:36.
Banning legal highs ` the police warning to festival goers | :00:37. | :00:41.
And the former Premier Leagte star taking on a physical | :00:42. | :00:44.
It is a huge tick in a box for me personally to undertake a physical | :00:45. | :00:51.
and mental challenge that whll test me all the way and probably beyond | :00:52. | :00:53.
my limits in many ways. It's | :00:54. | :01:00.
a business that generates mhllions of pounds for the local economy | :01:01. | :01:02.
and supports hundreds of jobs. But today, | :01:03. | :01:05.
it was announced that Weymotth will lose the Condor Ferries service ` at | :01:06. | :01:08.
least for the foreseeable ftture. Weymouth businesses have bedn | :01:09. | :01:11.
counting the economic cost. Our Transport Correspondent, | :01:12. | :01:23.
Paul Clifton, has spent the day Paul, the move has been hinted at, | :01:24. | :01:25.
but it's a surprise today? It is a complete surprise. Ht is the | :01:26. | :01:37.
Weymouth carnival today, thdy are just about to get underway with the | :01:38. | :01:40.
procession. For centuries this has been the link between the town | :01:41. | :01:47.
Islands and the UK. The ferry service has been here | :01:48. | :01:51.
since before the Second World War. Condor have been here since the | :01:52. | :01:56.
1980s. But not any more. Thd company has failed to reach a deal with the | :01:57. | :02:01.
council owned port and after almost 30 years here today it has pulled | :02:02. | :02:02.
the plug. Setting sail at lunch time, the | :02:03. | :02:12.
ferry to Guernsey slipped away from Weymouth. Soon, the whole company | :02:13. | :02:18.
will do the same. Condor is replacing two small ferries with our | :02:19. | :02:22.
new larger one. It will not fit on this birth. For hoteliers and shops, | :02:23. | :02:27.
that will mean a significant loss of business, up to ?10 million a year. | :02:28. | :02:32.
Passengers stay the night bdfore sailing or stop for a meal. | :02:33. | :02:36.
We are going to miss it, thdre is no doubt, but we have to move on and | :02:37. | :02:41.
say, you know, Weymouth was here long before Condor and will be here | :02:42. | :02:46.
long after it. Two years ago, the harbour wall | :02:47. | :02:51.
started slipping into the sda. The council owned port spent ?4 million | :02:52. | :02:57.
rebuilding of birth that will soon stand empty. The council sahd it | :02:58. | :03:00.
would not spend a further ?00 million building a larger one. They | :03:01. | :03:05.
tried to gloss over the economic damage that will inevitably follow | :03:06. | :03:10.
the ferries' departure. It is disappointing in the context | :03:11. | :03:15.
that we have had Condor operating from Weymouth for a substantial | :03:16. | :03:18.
amount of time. It plays an important role in the local economy | :03:19. | :03:22.
but equally we have as a cotncil being mindful of these things within | :03:23. | :03:27.
a strategic agenda going forward. We now have five years at ldast to | :03:28. | :03:31.
scratch our heads and think, do we want the ferry here and if we do how | :03:32. | :03:36.
do we raise the money? It whll give people time to think about ht. It | :03:37. | :03:41.
became a beauty contest between ice and Weymouth. | :03:42. | :03:44.
One has the shorter sea crossing, the other already offers thd right | :03:45. | :03:49.
facilities. Weymouth's loss is Poole's gain. | :03:50. | :03:54.
We will be signing a contract that will ensure Condor will be here for | :03:55. | :03:57.
a number of years, so it gives certainty to the port, it hdlps with | :03:58. | :04:02.
implement, obviously. But Condor has left Weymouth think | :04:03. | :04:06.
the Mayor of hope of the longer term future. | :04:07. | :04:08.
We are signing a medium`terl agreement with Poole. That provides | :04:09. | :04:12.
certainty for the Channel Islands and for us, it provides certainty | :04:13. | :04:18.
for Poole to be ready to accommodate us and it gives Weymouth a period of | :04:19. | :04:24.
time to duly reflect on the future of their plans for the airport. | :04:25. | :04:29.
It is Carnival Day in women. The Esplanade is closed. One hotr ago, | :04:30. | :04:34.
the Red Arrows flew over. Company Micro chose the timing of this | :04:35. | :04:38.
announcement with care. Next March it will be gone. `` Condor chose the | :04:39. | :04:46.
timing. What does this actually mean for the | :04:47. | :04:49.
time? Sally, this is a ?100 million a year | :04:50. | :04:54.
business. It employs nearly 600 staff, many of them here. It carries | :04:55. | :04:59.
1 million people. The Weymotth relief Road, ?75 million project, | :05:00. | :05:03.
was built partly to improve access to this port behind me. Condor is | :05:04. | :05:10.
owned by an Australian investment bank, McQuarrie. They own and other | :05:11. | :05:15.
ferry service, as well. For them this was a straightforward | :05:16. | :05:19.
commercial decision. And get the council there spent ?4 | :05:20. | :05:22.
million recently on essenti`l repairs to the port. | :05:23. | :05:26.
There is a chance that, you know, they will be nothing happenhng that | :05:27. | :05:30.
this time next year? When Condor sales are way ndxt March | :05:31. | :05:34.
they will lock the gates and walk away and they will not come back. | :05:35. | :05:38.
This place will be empty for the foreseeable future. Before lillion | :05:39. | :05:42.
pounds spent rebuilding it will be seen by some as poor use of money. | :05:43. | :05:48.
Weymouth council wanted Condor to pay for the larger birth. Condor | :05:49. | :05:55.
argued that was like asking an ally in to pay for an airport it would | :05:56. | :05:58.
never own. Instead it opened negotiations with Poole. | :05:59. | :06:03.
Condor appear to have left open the door for a foreseeable future at | :06:04. | :06:08.
Weymouth, how likely is that? Condor does not really want to be in | :06:09. | :06:13.
Poole, it is a longer journdy to the Channel Islands and that me`ns | :06:14. | :06:17.
burning more fuel. It has shgn a five`year deal. Even if Weylouth | :06:18. | :06:21.
wanted to build an extra birth here they could not possibly do ht in | :06:22. | :06:24.
time for next spring. There has not been a lot of investment here but | :06:25. | :06:28.
Weymouth is known for two things, the beach and its ferries. Tonight | :06:29. | :06:33.
you can see the beach is in use and Carnival is in full swing btt before | :06:34. | :06:36.
long the ferry service to the Channel Islands that has bedn your | :06:37. | :06:39.
arguably for centuries will soon be gone. | :06:40. | :06:43.
Should town centre shops stop selling cans | :06:44. | :06:45.
Police and councillors in the Arun District Council area hn | :06:46. | :06:48.
They believe it encourages street drinking and anti`social behaviour. | :06:49. | :06:51.
And they've been asking shops in Littlehampton to stop selling | :06:52. | :06:54.
But, as Sean Killick reports, it's not going as well | :06:55. | :06:57.
This is the poster you should be able to see in shop windows around | :06:58. | :07:04.
Despite the six months of trying, not a single shop has signed up to | :07:05. | :07:10.
the Sensible on Strength calpaign, in which a retailers pledge to stop | :07:11. | :07:13.
Stephen Mitchell was a street drinker and alcoholic | :07:14. | :07:19.
for decades who lost his job, his wife and nearly his lifd. | :07:20. | :07:23.
He told me why super`strength beer and cider was such a problel | :07:24. | :07:27.
Why were you drinking that, as opposed to something elsd? | :07:28. | :07:32.
Because it was cheap, extremely cheap. | :07:33. | :07:35.
I could probably go through six or nine litres of that in a day | :07:36. | :07:41.
The super`strength stuff is really lethal? | :07:42. | :07:52.
Last month, Morrisons band super`strength canned | :07:53. | :07:57.
Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Co`op told us they are talking with thd council | :07:58. | :08:02.
and support sensible drinking but they have not joined the calpaign, | :08:03. | :08:07.
One owner told me the authorities should targdt | :08:08. | :08:11.
manufacturers, not small retailers who are struggling financially. | :08:12. | :08:16.
If you stop selling this it will put you out of business, re`lly | :08:17. | :08:19.
Yes, we're already suffering for business. | :08:20. | :08:20.
It used to be busy down herd, it is not any more. | :08:21. | :08:31.
We have tried to engage with the retailers, we want to work in | :08:32. | :08:36.
partnership with them and hdlp them to understand the bigger picture | :08:37. | :08:38.
that, overall, if they do gdt involved with this campaign, this | :08:39. | :08:41.
local response, then the town will benefit, there | :08:42. | :08:45.
will be greater footfall and it will be a much more pleasant place. | :08:46. | :08:49.

Devices were sent to armed forces recruitment offices in Readhng | :09:11. | :09:15.

GCSE results are out tomorrow and nowhere are they more kdenly | :10:08. | :10:10.
anticipated than on the Isld of Wight. | :10:11. | :10:13.
Last summer the support for schools was considered to be so poor that | :10:14. | :10:17.
the government told Hampshire County Council to step in and take over | :10:18. | :10:26.
The number of students gainhng five good GCSEs, including English | :10:27. | :10:34.
That compared to a national average of 59.2%. | :10:35. | :10:37.
It put the Island fourth from bottom in the national league tabld. | :10:38. | :10:40.
Ofsted says improvements have now been made but in the first | :10:41. | :10:43.
of two special reports, Briony Leyland looks back at why | :10:44. | :10:45.
The gulf between education standards on the Isle of Wight compardd to the | :10:46. | :10:54.
In 2008 the council came up with the controversial solution to move | :10:55. | :10:58.
from three tiers of schooling ` primary, middle and high ` to two, | :10:59. | :11:03.
Opponents argued existing schools should be improved instead. | :11:04. | :11:11.
I think it has damaged a nulber of generations very badly. | :11:12. | :11:16.
If I was a parent of a child who had failed to gdt good | :11:17. | :11:21.
GCSEs when I thought they should have got GCSEs, and I know lots of | :11:22. | :11:26.
parents who think that, I would be very upset about the whole thing. | :11:27. | :11:31.
The former council leader D`vid Pugh stands | :11:32. | :11:34.
by the move to a two tier sxstem, arguing it ended years of stagnation | :11:35. | :11:37.
Whatever the merits of reorganising schools, when the council's | :11:38. | :11:42.
education services were inspected last summer more change restlted. | :11:43. | :11:45.
Last June, with four of the island's six secondary schools deemed to be | :11:46. | :11:50.
inadequate or failing and whth the council support for improving the | :11:51. | :11:54.
schools condemned as ineffective by Ofsted, the Department for Dducation | :11:55. | :11:59.
They called for reinforcements from the mainland, | :12:00. | :12:06.
asking Hampshire County Council to take over education services | :12:07. | :12:09.
A report by Hampshire Countx Council concluded a combination of factors | :12:10. | :12:15.
had led to poor standards, hncluding issues around as aspirations and | :12:16. | :12:22.
had led to poor standards, hncluding issues around aspirations and | :12:23. | :12:25.
expectations, problems with school leadership, and an unusuallx static | :12:26. | :12:27.
teaching force with a lack of professional development. | :12:28. | :12:32.
A plan for improvement was set in motion and progress has been made. | :12:33. | :12:35.
Aspiration is at the heart of the island's first free school. | :12:36. | :12:37.
Directly funded by government, it is the vision of parents | :12:38. | :12:40.
The parents wanted a smaller, simpler school, | :12:41. | :12:44.
We are naturally looking out for them and trying to carvd | :12:45. | :12:53.
a way and an education and a system for them that gives them | :12:54. | :12:57.
The future of our children hs in our own hands. | :12:58. | :13:02.
I think things will need to change and improve and we need to get | :13:03. | :13:06.
The headmaster hopes the frde school will help to tackle some | :13:07. | :13:13.
of the underlying problems behind low achievement on the island. | :13:14. | :13:15.
Down here in the South of the Isle of Wight there is quite a lot | :13:16. | :13:20.
There are a lot of free school meals students, | :13:21. | :13:32.
I think South Wight is about 30 , much higher than the island average, | :13:33. | :13:35.
A lack of aspiration can happen in an island in a community setting | :13:36. | :13:40.
I think it is easier to havd a lack of aspiration than pdrhaps | :13:41. | :13:44.
in other areas, and it is about challenging that. | :13:45. | :13:46.
The school believes even pupils who cannot get places here will benefit. | :13:47. | :13:49.
In a competitive market, if someone sets a standard, everyone else has | :13:50. | :13:52.
Something we talked a lot to the Department for Education | :13:53. | :13:56.
about is we will set up an outstanding and very strong school. | :13:57. | :13:59.
Competitors then have to rahse their game and it can impact all schools. | :14:00. | :14:03.
On tomorrow's programme we will be looking at what has already been | :14:04. | :14:06.
done to make improvements and finding out those all`ilportant | :14:07. | :14:09.
Police say they will be checking so`called "legal highs" seized | :14:10. | :14:20.
from Festival`goers in Readhng this weekend for signs of illegal drugs. | :14:21. | :14:24.
The substances, which include chemicals intdnded | :14:25. | :14:27.
as plant food and laughing gas, are banned from the event. | :14:28. | :14:32.
Anyone arrested carrying thdm could face problems with | :14:33. | :14:35.
the authorities who for the first time are using sophisticated | :14:36. | :14:38.
equipment to check they've not been mixed with outlawed drugs. | :14:39. | :14:41.
Festivalgoers have been arrhving in Reading all day. Police say | :14:42. | :14:55.
youngsters, some on their fhrst trip away from home, prevent that Micah | :14:56. | :15:01.
present rich pickings for crooks. But it is legal substances they may | :15:02. | :15:04.
have brought with them officers will be watching out for as they mingle | :15:05. | :15:08.
with the crowds. Everyday chemicals that can be used to try and get | :15:09. | :15:11.
high. It is a condition of entry that you | :15:12. | :15:15.
cannot bring any legal highs with you. It has been an issue bdfore. | :15:16. | :15:19.
Security will be taking thel off people and asking them to strrender | :15:20. | :15:23.
it. We also have some testing kit this year and we have to do some | :15:24. | :15:29.
checking. The government tells us 20% of legal highs may cont`in | :15:30. | :15:32.
illegal substances. The event is a sell`out but a slip | :15:33. | :15:36.
up getting old tickets in the post meant some had to collect them from | :15:37. | :15:42.
the town's Theatre. The ticket agency says almost `` only ` small | :15:43. | :15:45.
group were affected but among parents who had to take timd off | :15:46. | :15:49.
work and travel from far afheld that did not go down well. | :15:50. | :15:52.
It is inconvenient for us to come all the way to Reading. On the way | :15:53. | :15:57.
back it will be rush`hour, who knows what will happen. There is the time | :15:58. | :16:01.
and cost involved and I think they should reimburse me. | :16:02. | :16:08.
No problem with tickets herd as more and more people arrived in Reading | :16:09. | :16:12.
bone for the festival site. At least the crowds here on the | :16:13. | :16:17.
move. After a freight train broke down in the station this morning, | :16:18. | :16:20.
passengers were delayed at `rriving here in Reading for up to two hours. | :16:21. | :16:25.
Not what people want on thehr way to the festival. | :16:26. | :16:29.
A special World War One BBC roadshow arrived in Weymouth Pavilion today. | :16:30. | :16:33.
There were hands`on activithes, performances and interactivd | :16:34. | :16:36.
sessions to show what living in wartime was like for the soldiers | :16:37. | :16:40.
who went off to fight but also for the families who were left behind. | :16:41. | :16:42.
Frankie Peck has more. Learning about the First World War | :16:43. | :16:47.
in an Edwardian setting. Classroom cane and all were | :16:48. | :16:50.
present at today's road show. I'm going to have words with | :16:51. | :16:52.
your mother, you know! Away from the schoolmaster, | :16:53. | :16:56.
staff from the Imperial War Museums were teaching a more up`to`date | :16:57. | :16:59.
lesson, how people could discover what part their relatives h`d to | :17:00. | :17:01.
play in the Great War. Dorset Regiment, the Royal Navy | :17:02. | :17:07.
we are finding people who discovered that their grandfathers | :17:08. | :17:11.
had brothers who also served. They are finding lots | :17:12. | :17:15.
of details that perhaps thex knew All of the information | :17:16. | :17:20.
on people's relatives will be kept These girls found out more | :17:21. | :17:25.
about their great grandad. There were more colourful activities | :17:26. | :17:28.
on offer, and Morse code pr`ctice for those all`important messages | :17:29. | :17:33.
needing to get past enemy lhnes Because it was a fast`moving war, | :17:34. | :17:36.
radio contact was essential and Morse is the most effichent way | :17:37. | :17:41.
of sending radiocommunication. It was a good day for gener`tions | :17:42. | :17:47.
to come together to remember. I think she was enjoying herself | :17:48. | :18:05.
there! Let's move on to sport, Chris Temple is with us. | :18:06. | :18:07.
We will start with football. It was a busy night last night, we | :18:08. | :18:13.
have a tweet from a man who often sits there in his shorts. | :18:14. | :18:18.
What a treat! If you are eating your dinner now, look away now. | :18:19. | :18:22.
Last night, round three of football league matches, all of the site was | :18:23. | :18:25.
Micro clubs were in action. There are all the key moments involved in | :18:26. | :18:29.
your local teams. The Brighton manager registdred his | :18:30. | :18:33.
maiden league success as his side scored their first Championship | :18:34. | :18:38.
