of Ashya King are in a Spanish jail tonight fighting extradition to | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Britain after they took Hospital regrets that the | :00:00. | :00:17.
relationship with Ashya 's family broke down. Meanwhile the | :00:18. | :00:21.
five`year`old remains in a Spanish hospital while his parents `re in | :00:22. | :00:27.
jail. Our parents being takdn away is quite hard on our family. We are | :00:28. | :00:34.
a tight family, united. We'll be hearing from a mother whose son had | :00:35. | :00:38.
the proton beam their peak. Also tonight, keep windows shut. The | :00:39. | :00:49.
message to Dorset residents. Free if you are and three, the expansion of | :00:50. | :00:54.
nursery places to some children `` under three. Doctors at Southampton | :00:55. | :01:07.
hospital so they regret the breakdown of their relationship with | :01:08. | :01:13.
the parents of Ashya king. They issued a statement saying their | :01:14. | :01:17.
first concern was for the wdlfare of the five`year`old, who was taken to | :01:18. | :01:20.
Spain last week. The main ddveloper and today has been the parents of | :01:21. | :01:29.
his parents in court. As thdy were being escorted, they could be heard | :01:30. | :01:35.
saying they simply wanted the best possible treatment for the | :01:36. | :01:40.
five`year`old son, Ashya. Today the judge in Madrid or just `` ordered | :01:41. | :01:50.
the couple should be detaindd for 72 hours after they refused to except | :01:51. | :01:55.
extradition back to the UK. It was revealed the European arrest warrant | :01:56. | :02:00.
was issued after police issted evidence to the prosecution service | :02:01. | :02:06.
and a district judge. Ashya was very vulnerable, in the back of ` motor | :02:07. | :02:09.
car, travelling across Europe. He was not getting the same qu`lity of | :02:10. | :02:14.
medical treatment he was receiving in Hampshire at sub hunting General | :02:15. | :02:21.
Hospital. In another development, Portsmouth City Council has | :02:22. | :02:22.
confirmed it became involved. The family have said on viddos | :02:23. | :02:46.
posted on you tube that thex took the five`year`old boy from | :02:47. | :02:49.
Southampton Hospital last Thursday because they wanted him to be given | :02:50. | :02:54.
proton beam therapy, a treatment currently not available frol the | :02:55. | :03:00.
NHS. I was going to get the money to pay for the proton beam therapy | :03:01. | :03:05.
They have prevented that now. The police in Spain are involved and I | :03:06. | :03:10.
cannot do what I wanted to do. Southampton General Hospital said it | :03:11. | :03:14.
had had conversations with the family about treatment options. It | :03:15. | :03:21.
offered a second opinion and assistance with organising treatment | :03:22. | :03:23.
abroad. The public debate about this case continues. The Portsmotth South | :03:24. | :03:27.
MP has written to the Health Secretary and the hospital, calling | :03:28. | :03:32.
for a review of the treatment being offered to Ashya and a numbdr of | :03:33. | :03:36.
petitions, critical of the way the family has been treated, ard being | :03:37. | :03:39.
prepared. One will be presented to the Government tomorrow. Ashya is | :03:40. | :03:46.
being treated in a hospital in Malaga. This afternoon, the eldest | :03:47. | :03:51.
brother has been allowed in to see him. Speaking before the visit, he | :03:52. | :03:58.
said the separation had been incredibly fickle. We never thought | :03:59. | :04:04.
this would be such a big de`l. `` incredibly difficult. We want to do | :04:05. | :04:08.
what is best for Ashya. I al grateful to everyone back home. The | :04:09. | :04:15.
petition is being signed and money is being raised for treatment. I'm | :04:16. | :04:20.
very grateful to everyone who has participated in that. How do you | :04:21. | :04:24.
think your parents coping bding away from your little boy `` the little | :04:25. | :04:32.
boy? My mum is going through a hard time. Ashya is the centre of our | :04:33. | :04:38.
family since this all startdd. We moved from Portsmouth to | :04:39. | :04:40.
Southampton. A charity were good enough to give us a room. Whth Ashya | :04:41. | :04:48.
being taken away from us and our parents being taken away, it is | :04:49. | :04:53.
quite hard on our family. This was about raising money to go to the | :04:54. | :04:57.
Czech Republic for proton bdam therapy. Why do they think that will | :04:58. | :05:01.
make a big difference? You like and we want his quality`of`life to be | :05:02. | :05:07.
the best. We have done so mtch research and we know the | :05:08. | :05:11.
side`effects of proton beam therapy are less and he would have lore or | :05:12. | :05:14.
less in normal life if he rdceived that treatment. If it is successful, | :05:15. | :05:21.
we know it does have its risks alongside chemotherapy and | :05:22. | :05:25.
radiotherapy. It is not a mhracle treatment but we hope that hf it has | :05:26. | :05:30.
all gone well he will benefht after the treatment. At the heart of this | :05:31. | :05:38.
case is a dispute between the family and doctors over the best course of | :05:39. | :05:40.
treatment. It was a debate complicated | :05:41. | :05:45.
by the parent's wishes to explore a relatively new therapy not `vailable | :05:46. | :05:47.
on the NHS in this country. Our Health Correspondent David | :05:48. | :05:50.
Fenton joins me now. It's clear there was | :05:51. | :05:52.
a serious breakdown in the relationship between Southalpton | :05:53. | :05:54.
hospital and the King familx? This is a very complicated case | :05:55. | :05:56.
but at its heart there is a simple truth ` that familx wanted | :05:57. | :06:00.
one thing for their child, The family took Ashya to Sp`in | :06:01. | :06:02.
because they claimed hospit`l was considering a court order | :06:03. | :06:16.
against them. I spoke to one brain tumour charity | :06:17. | :06:19.
` about pressures that both sides I understand what a dark pl`ce this | :06:20. | :06:36.
family is in. There is nothhng worse than a child being diagnosed with | :06:37. | :06:40.
this devastating illness. You would do anything to fight for yotr child | :06:41. | :06:48.
's corner. It is also very dasy to use perspective and that crhtical | :06:49. | :06:52.
distance you need when therd is such high emotions and you are in such a | :06:53. | :06:58.
high emotional state. The f`mily has been quite vocal and we havd had | :06:59. | :07:00.
from the hospital this afternoon. Yes, almost for the first thme, | :07:01. | :07:05.
we had some detail from thel. On the question of what went wrong, | :07:06. | :07:08.
the Medical Director, We very much regret that | :07:09. | :07:10.
the communication and relationship with the Khng | :07:11. | :07:24.
family had broken down in this way. But he also said Ashya's ch`nces of | :07:25. | :07:26.
surviving his condition for at least five years are about 70`80%, if he | :07:27. | :07:30.
gets the right medical treatment. Of course the family believd that | :07:31. | :07:32.
should be proton beam therapy, which is a fairly new kind of radhotherapy | :07:33. | :07:35.
which, in theory does less harm to healthy cells around a tumotr | :07:36. | :07:39.
because it's much more targdted Well, I spoke to | :07:40. | :07:41.
the centre where the family were They said they would be happy to | :07:42. | :07:46.
take him immediately, if Southampton sends them Ashya s | :07:47. | :07:51.
scans and medical details. Although proton beam therapx isn't | :07:52. | :08:07.
yet available in this country, the NHS does pay for patients ` | :08:08. | :08:09.
mostly children ` One of those to benefit was Sam John | :08:10. | :08:12.
from Fareham, who went to Florida last year just after sitting | :08:13. | :08:16.
his GCSEs for treatment His mother, Vicky, | :08:17. | :08:19.
joins me live from the family home. Thank you both for being with us. | :08:20. | :08:37.
This is a very emotional story. This must have brought back a lot of | :08:38. | :08:41.
emotion for you, having gond through what you have been through `s a | :08:42. | :08:46.
family. It was heartbreaking to hear what the family are going through, | :08:47. | :08:51.
heartbreaking. Every parent wants to do the best for their child. Medical | :08:52. | :08:58.
options are limited, aren't they? How do you reconcile that? @t the | :08:59. | :09:03.
end of the day, we would have moved heaven and earth to get the right | :09:04. | :09:09.
treatment for Sam. The hosphtal was deciding whether they would give him | :09:10. | :09:13.
the treatment first off, mahnly because of his age. He was ` month | :09:14. | :09:19.
older than the normal page. We actually started fundraising | :09:20. | :09:24.
straightaway. They said we were not likely to get the funding btt we | :09:25. | :09:28.
started to fund raise straightaway. We knew if that was the best | :09:29. | :09:33.
treatment for him, that is what we had to do. How much stress did that | :09:34. | :09:40.
put you under? It is a knot of stress on the family. It did bring | :09:41. | :09:44.
us closer together as a famhly. We found we had so many friends and | :09:45. | :09:49.
relatives back could come together and help us. It was amazing. The | :09:50. | :09:54.
stress is unbelievable. My husband lost his job over it. There was a | :09:55. | :10:02.
lot of stress in the family. Can you understand what the parents of Ashya | :10:03. | :10:09.
King have gone through? Sam was 16 and he was five. Sam was di`gnosed | :10:10. | :10:15.
when he was nine. He is my baby He is a big one but he is still my | :10:16. | :10:19.
baby. To not be able to hold his hands and give him a hug whdn he is | :10:20. | :10:24.
feeling low, I cannot imagine not being able to do that. What was the | :10:25. | :10:29.
proton beam therapy like to go through? Really simple and dasy A | :10:30. | :10:37.
couple of years before I went on chemotherapy, that involved a lot of | :10:38. | :10:43.
injections and surgery. The proton beam therapy was actually jtst | :10:44. | :10:47.
laying on a bed with a mask on for half an hour or an hour doing | :10:48. | :10:55.
nothing. How are you? I am well Yes, the side effects are mdant to | :10:56. | :11:02.
come in later in a years tile, up to 20 years. I am all right now but it | :11:03. | :11:08.
is still under close watch. Thank you so much, both of you, for | :11:09. | :11:13.
joining us. We wish you all the best and hope it turns out well for you. | :11:14. | :11:18.
Still to come in this evening's South Tod`y.. . | :11:19. | :11:19.
Is it late night shopping for Saints after a summer of selling players? | :11:20. | :11:27.
A BBC investigation has discovered that three quarters | :11:28. | :11:29.
of nursing shifts on hospit`l wards in the South aren't at the | :11:30. | :11:32.
A Freedom of Information repuest was used to get a snapshot of ntrses | :11:33. | :11:37.
On elderly care wards in particular, several hospitals didn't re`ch the | :11:38. | :11:41.
target of one registered nurse for seven patients, which is recommended | :11:42. | :11:44.
They are one of the most visible people who look | :11:45. | :11:58.
But it seems there aren't enough nurses on our wards. | :11:59. | :12:02.
The Royal College of Nursing says a typical ward should have one | :12:03. | :12:05.
There should also be what it calls a skill mix ` 65% of the shhft | :12:06. | :12:12.
should be fully trained nurses, the other 35% can be health asshstants. | :12:13. | :12:17.
But, in the South, 78% of shifts don't make that r`tio | :12:18. | :12:30.
If you have relatives in hospital or if you are going into hospital that | :12:31. | :12:37.
hospitals should have taken steps to ensure there are enough people on | :12:38. | :12:39.
the wards to provide the care. In the South, five hospitals did not | :12:40. | :12:42.
have any shifts with the recommended skill mix on the days we surveyed, | :12:43. | :12:46.
including the Isle of Wight and Poole, where around a third of the | :12:47. | :12:49.
shifts had the recommended staff ratio reversed, | :12:50. | :12:51.
with more health care assistants Poole Hospital refused to do | :12:52. | :12:53.
an interview but told us it fully complies with the Government's | :12:54. | :12:58.
guidelines and that its own patient survey found staff levels wdre | :12:59. | :13:00.
in line with the national average. Those using | :13:01. | :13:04.
the hospital had few complahnts I did hear a couple complaining they | :13:05. | :13:20.
were understaffed a bit but they managed. They rallied round each | :13:21. | :13:26.
other. It was good. I waited about two hours. I found it first class. I | :13:27. | :13:33.
had no problems whatsoever. They were there when I needed thdm. | :13:34. | :13:39.
Poole and the Isle of Wight also fell well below the recommendation | :13:40. | :13:42.
On elderly care wards at St Mary's, it had more than nine patients | :13:43. | :13:46.
The hospital says its problems are unique. | :13:47. | :13:59.
The difficulties of travel `re quite challenging. We have a dischplined | :14:00. | :14:06.
group of student nurses who are keen to work on the island. I am sure we | :14:07. | :14:11.
will get to those levels but it will take longer than one would dxpect on | :14:12. | :14:12.
the mainland. Hospitals are under no obligation to | :14:13. | :14:15.
follow the RCN's recommendations, All say it's | :14:16. | :14:18.
the patients who matter. Fire fighters are continuing to | :14:19. | :14:20.
tackle a fire at a landfill site in Dorset, with warnings th`t it | :14:21. | :14:23.
could take days to extinguish. It broke out the site near Wareham, | :14:24. | :14:26.
on Sunday afternoon with reports Residents living nearby are being | :14:27. | :14:29.
warned that weather conditions this evening could lead to lore | :14:30. | :14:34.
difficult conditions. 71`year`old former professional | :14:35. | :14:36.
wrestler Bill has had many fights The latest against the effects | :14:37. | :14:44.
of the acrid smoke hanging over I suffer with my chest a bit but it | :14:45. | :15:00.
has made it worse today. Re`lly worse. We are in the house `ll day. | :15:01. | :15:06.
We have not been out at all. The fire broke out at | :15:07. | :15:10.
around 5pm yesterday evening, 1 ,000 sq m of rubbish is affected to | :15:11. | :15:12.
a depth of 10m. There's been more than 30 fhre | :15:13. | :15:15.
fighters on the site with shx fire I looked up over the wedding awning | :15:16. | :15:25.
and there was black, billowhng smoke. | :15:26. | :15:27.
This pub is a few hundred mdtres from the site and was advisdd to | :15:28. | :15:30.
It has been horrendous. We `re in a hollow and it has been quitd | :15:31. | :15:45.
choking. There is no hazardous waste in the landfill. It is general waste | :15:46. | :15:47.
that is in the site and is burning. Fire fighters have run this 4 | :15:48. | :15:52.
km hose from the River Piddle They say it could be days | :15:53. | :15:55.
before the fire is fully out. A search is under way for an | :15:56. | :16:09.
11`year`old boy who has gond missing between Lulworth Cove and Wdymouth. | :16:10. | :16:12.
Dorset Police have a number of officers the area. He has | :16:13. | :16:19.
disabilities which may make himself to recognise risks or react | :16:20. | :16:24.
difficult `` differently to other children of his age. He was wearing | :16:25. | :16:31.
a Hawaiian print T`shirt. Any further information and we will | :16:32. | :16:32.
bring it to you when we can. An expansion of nursery provision | :16:33. | :16:36.
for disadvantaged two year olds has been launched by a government | :16:37. | :16:39.
minister on a visit to Bognor Regis. An extra 130,000 free places will | :16:40. | :16:42.
become available nationwide aimed at helping families earning less | :16:43. | :16:44.
than ?17,000. But there has been criticisl | :16:45. | :16:46.
about funding levels and sole councils say they're struggling to | :16:47. | :16:50.
find the extra places. It is a good day for Arthur. He | :16:51. | :17:06.
already comes to this nursery in Bognor Regis twice a week. With | :17:07. | :17:10.
additional funding he can now come three times. That is great news for | :17:11. | :17:16.
his mother. A massive difference. We can pay for an extra session. We are | :17:17. | :17:22.
not relying on family members to look after him while I go to work. A | :17:23. | :17:27.
lot of difference. Representatives of nurseries and other provhders say | :17:28. | :17:33.
the changes are well intenddd but flawed. This policy was announced | :17:34. | :17:39.
without any consultation. They are meant to provide the places. They | :17:40. | :17:43.
will tell you that the schele is inadequately funded and therefore at | :17:44. | :17:47.
some point in time parents will be queueing up for these places and | :17:48. | :17:51.
they will not be there. In some areas there are not enough places to | :17:52. | :18:00.
cope with demand. Launching the scheme in West Sussex, the | :18:01. | :18:08.
Government minister made thhs pledged `` pledge. Local authorities | :18:09. | :18:12.
have a statutory duty to provide places. The Government is b`cking | :18:13. | :18:17.
that with 100 million of capital investment to ensure the pl`ces are | :18:18. | :18:21.
available. In Bognor, there has been a shortage. We were up to ftll | :18:22. | :18:31.
capacity and were turning children away. We can provide more places for | :18:32. | :18:37.
those children. The nursery extension opens later this lonth. | :18:38. | :18:41.
Small children will be able to join Arthur and his friends here. | :18:42. | :18:48.
Households on Portland in Dorset have taken part in an experhment to | :18:49. | :18:52.
try to cut the amount of sugar in diets. We are looking at thd true | :18:53. | :18:59.
health cost of our addiction to shiver. This lane in Portland, home | :19:00. | :19:12.
to Bronwen, Stephen and Diane. Like most of us they enjoy the odd sugary | :19:13. | :19:18.
treat. I tend to nibble. I do not look at shiver on packets. H | :19:19. | :19:24.
normally eat healthily and then I go for a binge week. They have been | :19:25. | :19:33.
keeping a food diary. They `re typical of the average person. Our | :19:34. | :19:42.
lives have been hijacked by sugar. We need to wind back the harm if we | :19:43. | :19:52.
are to improve the increasing burden of chronic disease. I discover what | :19:53. | :19:57.
the long`term effects are and see how it is changing our bodids | :19:58. | :20:01.
behaviour. We challenge Portland to cut down on the sweet stuff. That is | :20:02. | :20:11.
Inside Out at 7:30pm. It is transfer deadline day. Is it like a feeding | :20:12. | :20:17.

Mary 's. Today there could be two players coming in. In the l`st few | :20:30. | :20:33.
hours, there are two players having their medicals at Saint Marx 's The | :20:34. | :20:40.
first is a Belgian defender who has played every game at the World Cup. | :20:41. | :20:47.
The second is a pacey winger who has been signed from Salzburg. Hopefully | :20:48. | :20:51.
that will go through in the next bailout. It will take spendhng to | :20:52. | :20:56.

club already. He has only bden there a few days. One Saints fan went to | :21:04. | :21:10.
buy his shirt, got his name on the back and has now seen the player | :21:11. | :21:15.
leave. The club has said thdy will be found him all the money. What | :21:16. | :21:23.
about business for other cltbs? Andrew Salmon is now at Bournemouth | :21:24. | :21:44.
