Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. | :00:10. | :00:11.
Playing on their emotions ` the gang who conned money out of women | :00:12. | :00:16.
I felt really upset and then really angry that somebody had chosen to do | :00:17. | :00:27.
this to me. Rolling into Bognor Regis ` | :00:28. | :00:28.
the luxury car maker moving up Open for business ` amid warnings | :00:29. | :00:31.
the new coastguard control room And could Portsmouth pull off a | :00:32. | :00:35.
giant killing and beat Manchester to Three men from Portsmouth and | :00:36. | :00:43.
another man from the Newbury area have been convicted of using one | :00:44. | :01:03.
of the UK's biggest dating websites to trick women out of nearly | :01:04. | :01:06.
a quarter of a million pounds. One victim handed over more than | :01:07. | :01:09.
?174,000 to a man she met online | :01:10. | :01:11.
at the match.com website. In fact he was a bogus profile | :01:12. | :01:16.
made up by the scammers. Another man and a woman were | :01:17. | :01:26.
acquitted. Police say the scam preyed on women | :01:27. | :01:43.
emotionally. Like a quarter of ?1 million was handed over. They had | :01:44. | :01:48.
all been members of match.com, looking for partners. They were | :01:49. | :01:54.
targeted by fraudsters who created fake profiles of men. Women handed | :01:55. | :02:01.
over sums between ?4000 and ?10,000 in most cases, one woman handed over | :02:02. | :02:09.
?174,000. Much of the money was laundered through banks in Southsea. | :02:10. | :02:13.
The Crown Prosecution Service says it will use the law to try to claw | :02:14. | :02:18.
back the money but in many cases this is not about money but about | :02:19. | :02:22.
women losing their dignity and their confidence. | :02:23. | :02:25.
Dating websites have increasingly become a target for scammers, | :02:26. | :02:27.
preying on people seeking relationships. | :02:28. | :02:30.
Sarah`Jane Johnson from Haselmere in Surrey became a victim after she | :02:31. | :02:33.
She lost ?300, but was close to sending the fraudsters thousands. | :02:34. | :02:47.
She believes dating sites should do more to one people about scammers. | :02:48. | :02:56.
He was a nice man, he looked nice, he had a good job, he was sensitive, | :02:57. | :03:05.
in touch with his feelings, communicating on quite a deep | :03:06. | :03:10.
emotional level. It seemed perfect but these photos were stolen, used | :03:11. | :03:16.
by scammers to create a character with a story that Sarah`Jane | :03:17. | :03:19.
believed. Within a couple of weeks I felt that | :03:20. | :03:25.
I was developing feelings for this person, I was really entranced by | :03:26. | :03:31.
his voice, it was very deep, almost hypnotic, lovely French accent. He | :03:32. | :03:37.
weaved a complex story. He said he was in charge of a large | :03:38. | :03:40.
construction project in South Africa and needed to pay taxes so he would | :03:41. | :03:46.
be paid by the government for his work before returning to the UK. | :03:47. | :03:51.
Then came the first gentle request for money. Sarah Janes sent ?300 but | :03:52. | :03:56.
there was pressure for more and every time she became wary his calls | :03:57. | :04:04.
and e`mails true her back in. E`mails like this one. I had a dream | :04:05. | :04:11.
last night about us. I saw you on the pier and the wind was blowing | :04:12. | :04:16.
through your hair and your eyes held the fading sunlight. I gently | :04:17. | :04:20.
touched your cheek. I know this is the moment I have been waiting for | :04:21. | :04:26.
and I pray it never ends. I was pulled back in again. Sarah`Jane was | :04:27. | :04:34.
close to sending ?13,000 until a friend sent her aid blog full of | :04:35. | :04:39.
similar stories and she finally realised she had been conned. I | :04:40. | :04:46.
spent two days crying a lot of the time. I was really upset and then I | :04:47. | :04:50.
felt really angry that somebody had chosen to do this to me. Sarah`Jane | :04:51. | :04:56.
says she will never try online dating again. She wants others to | :04:57. | :04:58.
learn from her mistakes. In a statement about the court case, | :04:59. | :05:02.
match.com told us... In response to Sarah Jane's | :05:03. | :05:19.
concerns the company added... The luxury car maker Rolls`Royce has | :05:20. | :05:40.
tonight announced a big expansion It's to build | :05:41. | :05:42.
a new technology centre in Bognor Regis, a stone's throw from its main | :05:43. | :05:47.
production plant at Goodwood. It'll employ 200 people but only | :05:48. | :05:52.
a handful will be new jobs. The Bognor unit will be | :05:53. | :05:55.
in an area that could become an enterprise zone, offering incentives | :05:56. | :05:58.
to the companies based there. Let's cross live to our Business | :05:59. | :06:01.
Correspondent Alastair Fee who's The first cars rolled | :06:02. | :06:04.
off the production line in 2003. For all its success, what they don't | :06:05. | :06:20.
have at Goodwood is room to expand. That issue has now been solved, | :06:21. | :06:23.
at a new site eight miles away. It has been a closely guarded secret | :06:24. | :06:33.
but finally Rolls`Royce today confirmed its plans for the future. | :06:34. | :06:39.
This is a significant development and the local area as well, it | :06:40. | :06:43.
reinforces our commitment to the area and I am delighted that you all | :06:44. | :06:49.
came here to share the great news, not only for us but also for the | :06:50. | :06:55.
area. No change in its headquarters or the county it calls home, but it | :06:56. | :06:59.
has found a location for a large new centre. The plan is growing and we | :07:00. | :07:06.
needed to free up some space to give us freedom to grow even further. | :07:07. | :07:13.
People and customer demand more and more bespoke content with | :07:14. | :07:23.
Rolls`Royce. On the northern side of Bognor Regis, covering 30,000 square | :07:24. | :07:28.
metres, Rolls`Royce is building a new technology and logistics centre. | :07:29. | :07:33.
It will be bigger than four football pitches and they will not be making | :07:34. | :07:37.
cars here but it will play an important part of its business. | :07:38. | :07:43.
There will be a distribution centre for new cars and a workshop for car | :07:44. | :07:48.
preparation. The choice of location means that Rolls`Royce is likely to | :07:49. | :07:53.
be the first major company to take advantage of plans for a new | :07:54. | :07:59.
enterprise zone. It is a major boost to our bid to become an enterprise | :08:00. | :08:04.
zone but the mere fact that Rolls`Royce is investing so much | :08:05. | :08:10.
money, producing a facility three quarters of that at Goodwood, in | :08:11. | :08:15.
future will hopefully encourage a lot of companies. Rolls`Royce | :08:16. | :08:21.
started in 1906 and became the choice of the rich and famous. The | :08:22. | :08:26.
British company was finally bought by BMW, and they relocated to West | :08:27. | :08:34.
Sussex. Rolls`Royce has seen a record 33% rise in sales. 2014 has | :08:35. | :08:44.
been its West year yet. `` best. None of the employees knew of the | :08:45. | :08:48.
announcement until this afternoon. It is pretty impressive, it will | :08:49. | :08:52.
open up a lot of jobs for other people and hopefully we can expand. | :08:53. | :08:56.
Good access to the new site will be critical. Two infrastructure sites | :08:57. | :09:04.
are run the way and they are both designed to reduce congestion. More | :09:05. | :09:11.
than 200 people will be based at the technology and logistics centre, | :09:12. | :09:17.
which is expected to open in 2016. David Myers is from the Bognor Regis | :09:18. | :09:22.
regeneration board. What do you hope will be the knock`on effect of this | :09:23. | :09:28.
announcement? We are very excited to have Rolls`Royce in Bognor Regis and | :09:29. | :09:31.
we think the knock`on effect will be important. The enterprise initiative | :09:32. | :09:37.
we set up is going to attract new businesses into the town and we are | :09:38. | :09:42.
very hopeful that there will be other motor sector businesses on the | :09:43. | :09:50.
back of this. Surely to incentivise new businesses you are going to need | :09:51. | :09:56.
the enterprise zone status. We are very confident it will happen but | :09:57. | :09:59.
the government is still making up its mind, but we have very good | :10:00. | :10:05.
structure within the Regis, just under 100 acres of land available | :10:06. | :10:09.
for industrial abutment, and we believe that will offer companies | :10:10. | :10:15.
are a lot of advantages to come into Bognor Regis very quickly. | :10:16. | :10:26.
A boost for employees today at Goodwood and hopefully a new chapter | :10:27. | :10:28.
in the fortunes of Bognor Regis. As you may have heard, the Duke and | :10:29. | :10:32.
Duchess of Cambridge say they're delighted with the news they're | :10:33. | :10:35.
expecting their second child. The news that Prince George will be | :10:36. | :10:37.
getting a baby brother or sister was welcomed in Bucklebury, | :10:38. | :10:41.
the Berkshire village where Kate I hope she keeps better health this | :10:42. | :10:51.
time because she was quite poorly with Prince George. I think they are | :10:52. | :10:58.
fantastic parents and, yeah, another little baby. It is good news for the | :10:59. | :11:03.
village of course, people are thrilled around here. Lovely! | :11:04. | :11:06.
Still to come in this evening's South Today... | :11:07. | :11:08.
Could Portsmouth pull off a giant killing and beat Manchester to | :11:09. | :11:13.
Ashya King is tonight in Prague hospital of planned proton beam | :11:14. | :11:29.
treatment, after a legal order which had made him a ward of court was | :11:30. | :11:35.
removed. Denby was taken from Southampton General Hospital earlier | :11:36. | :11:38.
this week and doctors had questioned the benefit of the proton therapy. | :11:39. | :11:52.
`` Ashya was taken. We have seen a war of words between Southampton | :11:53. | :11:56.
General Hospital and the clinic in Prague over this proton beam | :11:57. | :12:01.
therapy, whether it is really necessary. The doctors here say it | :12:02. | :12:05.
will not do Ashya any harm but equally it will not do anything they | :12:06. | :12:09.
could do with their normal radiotherapy. | :12:10. | :12:12.
There was no benefit in Ashya's case for proton radiotherapy. | :12:13. | :12:16.
We do not say it was unacceptable treatment. | :12:17. | :12:19.
In Ashya's case, with the type of tumour that he has, | :12:20. | :12:23.
because we need to irradiate the spinal cord and most of the | :12:24. | :12:29.
brain because of the tumour, the advantages you would get from proton | :12:30. | :12:30.
radiotherapy are not as great. Is this just the hospital trying to | :12:31. | :12:43.
defend itself? I think there is a point in that but also generally | :12:44. | :12:47.
medically they think they are in the right word in the last half an hour | :12:48. | :12:53.
they say they wish Ashya well in Prague and I hope he makes a full | :12:54. | :12:58.
recovery. He is over there and likely to start therapy soon. | :12:59. | :13:09.
That is their treatment of choice and according to current knowledge | :13:10. | :13:15.
it should spur some of the effects of treatment . | :13:16. | :13:30.
I understand Portsmouth City Council is writing to the family to ask | :13:31. | :13:35.
about their schooling ` because classes went back this week and | :13:36. | :13:42.
those children are still abroad. Clearly exceptional circumstances, | :13:43. | :13:45.
but the council wants to know they are not losing out | :13:46. | :13:47.
and may even be sending some home education packs out, if they can get | :13:48. | :13:49.
an address for them. Police are continuing to question | :13:50. | :13:52.
two people about the murder of a mother`of`five who was stabbed | :13:53. | :13:54.
to death on a New Forest farm. The body | :13:55. | :13:57.
of Pennie Davis was found in a field A 37`year`old man, arrested on | :13:58. | :14:00.
suspicion of assisting an offender, A 24`year`old woman is still in | :14:01. | :14:03.
custody, and police have been given extra time to question a 22`year`old | :14:04. | :14:07.
man on suspicion of murder. A new coastguard control room | :14:08. | :14:11.
started taking responsibility Next week it will replace Portland | :14:12. | :14:13.
coastguard as well. It marks the end | :14:14. | :14:19.
of a hugely controversial process, strongly opposed | :14:20. | :14:21.
by coastal communities, coastguards It will be responsible | :14:22. | :14:23.
for coastal safety from Beachy Head in East Sussex right down to Topsham | :14:24. | :14:32.
in Devon, but also have overall The coastguards' union has warned | :14:33. | :14:35.
that a loss of local knowledge Our Transport Correspondent Paul | :14:36. | :14:41.
Clifton reports. This is the National Maritime | :14:42. | :14:55.
operations centre. When a Mayday signal is received the Coast Guard | :14:56. | :15:01.
teams, life guards and helicopters, will be run from here. Unlike older | :15:02. | :15:07.
centres, from here you can't see the sea. You can barely see daylight. | :15:08. | :15:13.
Does that really matter? Air`traffic controllers at Swanwick can't see | :15:14. | :15:20.
aeroplanes. Today good communications is all about | :15:21. | :15:25.
computers. So the old Coast Guard base at Lee on the Solent will close | :15:26. | :15:29.
later this week. Portland will close a week later. Mark Robb away used to | :15:30. | :15:47.
work at Portland. `` Rodaway. Half the coastguards in some areas have | :15:48. | :15:52.
applied for voluntary redundancy. The national coastguard agency has | :15:53. | :15:56.
not brought a lot of the staff with them and that is a lot of experience | :15:57. | :16:01.
that will not be transferred to this new centre and that will affect | :16:02. | :16:05.
ultimately operations in the future. This place was built as a fire | :16:06. | :16:09.
service headquarters but it was never used for that. Since 2008 it | :16:10. | :16:17.
has stood empty, rented by government at ?120,000 a month. I | :16:18. | :16:21.
suspect this is to do with money. It is not all to do with money. To be | :16:22. | :16:26.
fair, it did not need modernising, if that is the word, but I think | :16:27. | :16:33.
they modernised too far. Nearly 50 coastguards will work it, increasing | :16:34. | :16:38.
to 100 in a year's time, combination of national control Centre and the | :16:39. | :16:46.
20 47 `` 20 47 macro centre for the south coast. `` 24/7. | :16:47. | :16:56.
Pensioners from the South who were sold "shared appreciation mortgages" | :16:57. | :16:58.
have called for help in getting banks to change what they describe | :16:59. | :17:01.
Inside Out South has been investigating after being told | :17:02. | :17:04.
by some homeowners they have been left trapped in their properties. | :17:05. | :17:07.
When Brian Daughtry retired after working for charities abroad he had | :17:08. | :17:12.
little in the way of a pension so he was tempted by the offer of a | :17:13. | :17:22.
?35,000 interest`free loan from the Bank of Scotland in return for a 75% | :17:23. | :17:25.
share in any increase in the value of his New Forest home. | :17:26. | :17:28.
Since then property prices have soared and if he sold the house | :17:29. | :17:31.
tomorrow he would have to give the bank more than ?232,000. Thousands | :17:32. | :17:34.
A group action against the banks failed before the | :17:35. | :17:38.
details could ever be assessed in court. | :17:39. | :17:41.
The banks argued technicalities until the legal funds ran out. | :17:42. | :17:46.
The way it has turned out is very unfortunate. | :17:47. | :17:51.
I am really in a difficult situation. | :17:52. | :17:56.
Both banks say they can't change the mortgage terms and that | :17:57. | :17:59.
at the time pensioners were advised to take independent advice | :18:00. | :18:03.
but they say they do try to help people who are trapped in homes that | :18:04. | :18:06.
And you can see Jon's full report on Inside Out tonight at the later time | :18:07. | :18:16.
It's one of the biggest fleets of green buses in Europe, | :18:17. | :18:22.
and today a specially built filling station was opened for Reading's | :18:23. | :18:25.
The state`of`the`art facility was built with a grant | :18:26. | :18:33.
from the Department of Transport, and, as Ben Moore reports, | :18:34. | :18:36.
the drive to be eco`friendly is catching on in the town. | :18:37. | :18:41.
When Reading buses need to fill up with gas they do just that. | :18:42. | :18:46.
The depot's new ?1 million natural gas station has been paid for | :18:47. | :18:49.
We find Reading is a great place to trial new ideas | :18:50. | :18:57.
because it is willing to take on that risk and innovation and we want | :18:58. | :19:01.
other cities across the UK, who can also access funding if they choose, | :19:02. | :19:11.
to take a look at what is happening here. | :19:12. | :19:13.
There are 34 such buses and all are now in service. | :19:14. | :19:15.
But if eco`friendly travel is your thing the bus is not | :19:16. | :19:18.
Of the town's 216 black cabs, 113 are being converted to hybrid | :19:19. | :19:30.
natural compressed gas at a cost of ?370,000. | :19:31. | :19:38.
For once there will not be the finger pointed at taxis | :19:39. | :19:41.
and say, look, there's a polluting vehicle going along the road. | :19:42. | :19:45.
We will be cleaner, which can only improve the image | :19:46. | :19:50.
Does that mean fares are going to go down? | :19:51. | :19:56.
As two forms of transport go green there is a spirit of collaboration. | :19:57. | :19:59.
We fuel our buses in a great hurry in the evening | :20:00. | :20:01.
when they come off service so in the day this depot is largely | :20:02. | :20:05.
empty and the fuelling facility is sitting here unused and has | :20:06. | :20:08.
enormous capacity for providing gas for road vehicles other than buses. | :20:09. | :20:12.
This is ultimately a commercial venture ` | :20:13. | :20:15.
But with taxis converting too it seems the commitment to go green | :20:16. | :20:21.
There is a lot of emphasis on the future generation of players for | :20:22. | :20:45.
England and Portsmouth in football. Portsmouth stepped up | :20:46. | :20:48.
its bid to become the first City Three cities are in the running | :20:49. | :20:51.
for not only the title, but over ?1.5 million of Sport England money | :20:52. | :20:55.
to spend on developing the game. As I discovered earlier, | :20:56. | :20:58.
Portsmouth is going all out to win. Pompey is a name synonymous with | :20:59. | :21:00.
both a city and its football club. It is worn in Naas, Pompey. It is | :21:01. | :21:15.
not just put all, it is Pompey football. How can we give it up | :21:16. | :21:23.
after all these years? When you talk about Pompey you don't know whether | :21:24. | :21:26.
you are talking about the city or the football club. The blues, we are | :21:27. | :21:38.
the best in the land! Or we were. The spirit of the fans was clear to | :21:39. | :21:40.
see. Today was all about making it | :21:41. | :21:41.
official and becoming Sport ?1.6 million will be awarded to | :21:42. | :21:43.
invest in the grassroots level For that kind of money we should | :21:44. | :22:07.
have a big impact on the game. We live it and we breathe it and for | :22:08. | :22:12.
that to be recognised elsewhere would be fantastic. We would be able | :22:13. | :22:16.
to do all of the projects we wanted to do for year. Manchester and | :22:17. | :22:22.
Nottingham are also in the running. The decision will be made next week. | :22:23. | :22:27.
As for Pompey, we all know what they are looking for. And if they win | :22:28. | :22:32.
they will hold the title for two years. The ultimate goal is to find | :22:33. | :22:39.
the next generation of talent. They performed well off the pitch | :22:40. | :22:43.
but not quite as well on it. They were beaten 2`0 at Burton Albion. | :22:44. | :22:49.
They fell behind after just two minutes, the manager criticising | :22:50. | :22:57.
this defending. This good strike took Burton to another win. Michael | :22:58. | :23:12.
Appleton's men are still in the League two relegation zone. | :23:13. | :23:31.
Dorset event William Fox`Pitt in the burly horse trials over the weekend, | :23:32. | :23:38.
here he is, a perfect show`jumping round moved him up in the rankings | :23:39. | :23:50.
but it was not quite enough. It is worth a mention for the rugby as | :23:51. | :23:53.
well, London Welsh got heavily beaten in the opening fixtures of | :23:54. | :23:59.
the season, and London Irish were narrowly beaten. | :24:00. | :24:03.
It is only the beginning of the season. Now the weather, Alexis is | :24:04. | :24:17.
here. We have an area of high pressure well established over the | :24:18. | :24:18.
UK. It was a misty and murky start in | :24:19. | :24:40.
some places and the mist and fog tonight could be more dense than in | :24:41. | :24:47.
other areas. Clear skies means temperatures will fall away in the | :24:48. | :24:51.
countryside into single figures, seven or eight Celsius. Ten to 13 in | :24:52. | :24:58.
the towns and cities. A cooler, fresher feeling night than last | :24:59. | :25:02.
night. Temperatures similar each night this week, cooler in the | :25:03. | :25:09.
countryside. Lots of sunshine initially tomorrow and as the day | :25:10. | :25:12.
wears on we will see a lot more cloud in eastern areas. West is best | :25:13. | :25:18.
for the sunshine, with a high of 21 Celsius. Slightly cooler along the | :25:19. | :25:24.
south coast with the breeze. Through the course of tomorrow night it | :25:25. | :25:29.
stays right again under clearing skies. Temperatures falling away the | :25:30. | :25:33.
single figures in the countryside. A low of 11 to 14 in the towns and | :25:34. | :25:40.
cities. Much of this week stays dry thanks to this area of high pressure | :25:41. | :25:46.
well established over the UK. I can't promise wall`to`wall sunshine | :25:47. | :25:52.
but recent amounts at times. Western areas faring best for the sunny | :25:53. | :26:00.
spells, eastern areas have cloud creeping in from the North Sea and | :26:01. | :26:05.
the English Channel. We will have chilly nights and a misty and murky | :26:06. | :26:09.
start. The fog could be quite dense and take its time to clear. | :26:10. | :26:18.
Wednesday, sunny spells, bit more cloud on Thursday, but all in all | :26:19. | :26:23.
quite pleasant thanks to the high pressure, and temperatures on Friday | :26:24. | :26:31.
around 19. Throughout the summer you will | :26:32. | :26:36.
notice that Alexis has been mentioning some events. We are going | :26:37. | :26:43.
to talk about social media. We are starting a new events section | :26:44. | :26:51.
on our Facebook page. Every week I will pick one at random. I will not | :26:52. | :27:06.
be able to pick everyone. It will be called Don't Rain On My Parade. . | :27:07. | :27:18.
That is it for ask, more from us at 8pm and 10:25pm. | :27:19. | :27:31.
Have a good evening. `` from us. | :27:32. | :27:37. |
