Get ready to welcome the world. The countdown to the Olympics reaches a | :00:23. | :00:30.
major milestone. We are live from Weymouth. Britain could see gold on | :00:30. | :00:35.
these waters in 2012. Tonight we follow some of our best hopes come | :00:35. | :00:41.
up with one year to go. Of the water Portland prepares for a full- | :00:41. | :00:48.
scale test event. And beyond 2012, I will report from Athens on it -- | :00:48. | :00:54.
whether it there are lessons for after the Games leave town. At | :00:54. | :01:00.
daily prepares to make his first official dive into the Olympic pool | :01:00. | :01:10.
:01:10. | :01:11. | ||
-- Tom Daley. Also tonight, driven to drink and finally, despair. The | :01:11. | :01:13.
woman who cared for her ill husband escapes jail after trying to | :01:13. | :01:15.
smother him. And the dozens of dolphins spotted dancing in the | :01:15. | :01:23.
waters off Cornwall. One year from now it all begins. | :01:24. | :01:28.
The opening ceremony will be held and the sailing events will arrive | :01:29. | :01:33.
off the Dorset coast. That seaside resort down there is expected to | :01:33. | :01:37.
see its population double as people flocked to Weymouth to watch the | :01:37. | :01:43.
games. Up here overlooking Portland where the swimming events will take | :01:43. | :01:51.
place, they will see gold being one. But what we do know is that Britain | :01:51. | :01:58.
has some of the best hopes and they come from Devon. We went out on the | :01:58. | :02:05.
water with them. The National Sailing Academy is up and running | :02:05. | :02:11.
and is popular. But in one year the only sailors here will be a | :02:11. | :02:19.
Olympians. Exmouth's Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes are two of | :02:19. | :02:28.
the Olympic hopefuls getting to grips with local conditions. And | :02:28. | :02:30.
amongst the 16 strong GB sailing team will be Ben Rhodes and Stevie | :02:30. | :02:34.
Morrison. Or so they hope, as the final team selection hasn't been | :02:34. | :02:38.
made yet. Unlike some Olympic sports, in sailing there is only | :02:38. | :02:40.
one qualifying entry allowed per country in each of the 10 events. | :02:40. | :02:42.
Ben and Stevie managed Olympic selection for Beijing and were | :02:42. | :02:47.
tipped for a medal, but ended up coming ninth. But their dream of | :02:47. | :02:50.
gold hasn't faded and Stevie Morrison says these are the waters | :02:50. | :02:58.
to win it on. Today is not a fantastic advert for the place but | :02:58. | :03:05.
it is as good sailing as you find anywhere on the planet. We have a | :03:05. | :03:09.
good chance to win a medal. some of the world's best sailors | :03:09. | :03:15.
from other countries are here practising already. Will it be a | :03:15. | :03:25.
top Olympic venue? I think so. It would be nice to have at regatta in | :03:25. | :03:35.
:03:35. | :03:45. | ||
its strong wind. Hopefully Weymouth will bring it on in 2012. | :03:45. | :03:52.
Next week a full scale test event will take place. And the National | :03:52. | :03:58.
Sailing Academy is start to look very good, as I found out earlier. | :03:59. | :04:03.
I reported from here on the day the successful bid was announced and | :04:03. | :04:10.
this is the first time I have felt the presence of 2012. I has been to | :04:10. | :04:20.
a health and safety demonstration. Rob Andrew's, is the idea to start | :04:20. | :04:27.
with a blank canvas? Absolutely. We wanted to clear the site completely | :04:27. | :04:30.
so we can then allocate the athletes all their spaces when they | :04:30. | :04:35.
start to arrive. Selling is an organised sport. Are there any | :04:35. | :04:41.
areas of concern? I think that is why we do test events, to find out | :04:41. | :04:50.
if we are ready. This event is a very functional event. Take us | :04:50. | :04:57.
through what happens? We have only allowed one entrant per country, | :04:57. | :05:03.
just at the Games. 66 nations coming. So the best athletes in the | :05:03. | :05:12.
world. I believe all the medallists will be here because they want to | :05:12. | :05:18.
test it out as much as we do. We go through all the measurement | :05:18. | :05:24.
processes and then we used the same international technical officials. | :05:24. | :05:28.
And we hope a lot of the volunteers for this event will be the same | :05:28. | :05:34.
ones coming back in 2012. And there has been a lot of controversy over | :05:34. | :05:40.
the transport package. I think with the new road from Dorchester, | :05:40. | :05:47.
everyone seems very happy. It is much better than it used to be. | :05:47. | :05:52.
are getting excited of course. But there are four seasons to go before | :05:52. | :05:59.
the Olympics. Just tell us how exciting it will be on that date? | :05:59. | :06:03.
The big thing is that it is just the enthusiasm of everybody. The | :06:03. | :06:07.
athletes. Some of them will have trained for 12 years just to get | :06:07. | :06:14.
here. It is that enthusiasm that rubs off on all of the people, from | :06:14. | :06:20.
the volunteers, two towns and cities. I think everyone will get | :06:20. | :06:24.
wrapped up into this party mode with the most phenomenal sport | :06:24. | :06:30.
going on air all different disciplines. -- in all different | :06:30. | :06:38.
disciplines. Weymouth is hoping to capitalise on | :06:38. | :06:46.
every aspect of the Games. They know it is not just 2012 but what | :06:46. | :06:51.
happens after the Olympic torch has passed on that matters. The | :06:51. | :06:59.
Government is committed to a lasting legacy. I've been to Athens, | :06:59. | :07:01.
which hosted the Olympics in 2004, to see if there are lessons Dorset | :07:01. | :07:11.
can learn from a former host. The sailing centre now. Dorset is | :07:11. | :07:14.
next to host events on water but grease already knows what life can | :07:14. | :07:19.
hold after the party moves on. Organisers admit that the future of | :07:19. | :07:25.
some of the venues was not properly thought through but are there still | :07:25. | :07:31.
reaping the rewards? And took a trip out of town. To people here | :07:31. | :07:41.
:07:41. | :07:42. | ||
feel ripples seven years on? were hit by the Depression, and | :07:42. | :07:49.
that was it. The tourists came here and Greece was well known. | :07:49. | :07:55.
there any benefit from it? There wasn't. Even the international | :07:55. | :08:00.
Spotlight is not enough to persuade the mayor of the waterfront who | :08:00. | :08:06.
questions whether the bid should ever have been put forward. We had | :08:06. | :08:11.
expressed our objections and were against hosting the Games in Athens. | :08:11. | :08:15.
We now feel that the legacy has just divide our argument. Today | :08:15. | :08:19.
things are difficult and hosting the Olympic Games in my opinion did | :08:19. | :08:24.
not benefit our country as much as it should have done. But tracking | :08:24. | :08:27.
any upturn in the country's severely affected by the downturn | :08:27. | :08:32.
is tricky. Greece has influenced the world and been bailed out by | :08:32. | :08:39.
its neighbours. The Globe June dint as the Games returned home to | :08:39. | :08:45.
Greece. -- tuned in. And then to the clashes on the streets. Athens | :08:45. | :08:49.
is still badly bruised by the riots. Some of the protesters have not | :08:49. | :08:54.
left. There was even a debate over the extent to which the Olympics | :08:55. | :09:00.
have contributed to the current economic crisis. But if you can | :09:00. | :09:04.
factor at the problems facing the euro, what has the legacy been, | :09:04. | :09:10.
seven years on from the game's? Some venues I saw were deserted but | :09:10. | :09:16.
others are still been used. There is an operating Marina close to the | :09:16. | :09:22.
sailing centre. And even touching down here is a legacy, the city has | :09:22. | :09:26.
the Games to thank for a new airport. There are new tramlines, | :09:26. | :09:31.
new trains. Tens of millions of pounds have already been spent on | :09:31. | :09:37.
the transport network in Dorset. But Athens is now discovering | :09:37. | :09:41.
whether at the Olympics is the gift that keeps on giving. The area | :09:41. | :09:46.
close to the sailing centres or on opportunity to grow its sailing | :09:46. | :09:51.
business year on year just as Dorset does now. The hotel for the | :09:51. | :09:57.
British team stayed said that the tramline helped but it has not | :09:57. | :10:01.
become an huge resort for stock the atmosphere was terrific for the | :10:01. | :10:08.
Games. We believed it would be like that after the Olympics. But it | :10:08. | :10:15.
wasn't. Things went really downwards. Some visitors are from | :10:15. | :10:20.
the next host city and there have been gains in the market according | :10:20. | :10:27.
to this expert. But he tells me that the momentum built up is now | :10:27. | :10:34.
over. Forget the Olympics, it was lovely, history, but that is all. | :10:34. | :10:41.
So the effect on tourism has gone completely? Yes. Efforts to | :10:41. | :10:44.
capitalise on the games are still evident. But I'm told it is the | :10:44. | :10:48.
less visible benefits which means the Olympics are still delivering | :10:48. | :10:58.
:10:58. | :10:59. | ||
here. The Olympics provides a great legacy for a country. People learn | :10:59. | :11:03.
to work in an international environment and under pressure with | :11:03. | :11:07.
time constraints. The experience of the Olympics give him the | :11:07. | :11:17.
:11:17. | :11:21. | ||
opportunity to utilise those skills after the Olympics. | :11:21. | :11:27.
Are there lessons in all of that for Dorset and the South West? | :11:27. | :11:31.
Councillor Howard Lake from the women's and Portland council joins | :11:31. | :11:41.
:11:41. | :11:45. | ||
us now. There is going to be a follow-up to the Olympics and we | :11:45. | :11:52.
know that because we have been planning for it. We have got our | :11:52. | :11:57.
facilities to Olympic standard. Some of those I spoke to in Athens | :11:57. | :12:01.
were concerned that their country did not get as much in terms of | :12:01. | :12:06.
long-term benefits as they hoped. Does that worry you? It did | :12:06. | :12:10.
initially because when we learned we were hosting the selling, we had | :12:10. | :12:14.
a study done which said that of the last six Olympic sites, three have | :12:14. | :12:19.
gone downhill afterwards but three have benefited. We decided we | :12:19. | :12:24.
wanted to be like Barcelona and wanted to benefit very much from | :12:24. | :12:33.
this. We want to see that benefit for decades after and to remember | :12:34. | :12:39.
that Weymouth hosted the Olympics and it is an important harbour. | :12:39. | :12:44.
People in Weymouth today were positive but also had reservations. | :12:44. | :12:48.
Do you think everyone is on your side? I think they will be. The | :12:48. | :12:52.
problem at the moment is that we are getting all the preparation | :12:52. | :12:58.
without any of that glory. But that is coming to a close, there will | :12:58. | :13:03.
soon be usable and then we get the glory next year and the publicity | :13:03. | :13:12.
to go with it. So the pain first and then again afterwards. -- there | :13:12. | :13:22.
:13:22. | :13:22. | ||
again afterwards. Later in the programme we will see Tom Daley | :13:22. | :13:29.
diving. Back to the studio. A woman from Devon who tried to | :13:29. | :13:31.
smother her ill husband has been sentenced to a supervision order by | :13:31. | :13:35.
a judge at Exeter Crown Court. Margaret Sandercock's husband has | :13:35. | :13:38.
Parkinson's disease and the court heard caring for him had left her | :13:38. | :13:44.
feeling isolated and lonely. A health charity says not enough is | :13:44. | :13:48.
being done to help people who care for others. Our Home Affairs | :13:48. | :13:53.
Correspondent, Simon Hall, reports. For almost 30 years, Margaret | :13:53. | :13:57.
Sandercock cared for her husband, Graham. Parkinson's disease meant | :13:57. | :14:01.
he couldn't walk or feed himself. It drove her to alcoholism - until | :14:01. | :14:06.
one day she could take no more. She was found collapsed in the | :14:06. | :14:08.
graveyard of Crediton Parish Church and confessed to trying to smother | :14:08. | :14:12.
Graham. A charge of attempted murder was reduced to the offence | :14:12. | :14:16.
of putting a person in fear of violence. Today she pleaded guilty | :14:16. | :14:26.
:14:26. | :14:28. | ||
and was given a supervision order. She would like to thank the court | :14:28. | :14:33.
for being so as sympathetic to her position. It has been a difficult | :14:33. | :14:38.
and sensitive case. The judge has made his decision accordingly, | :14:38. | :14:41.
which is appropriate for both parties. Mrs Sandercock was a | :14:41. | :14:43.
volunteer at Crediton parish church and a well-known community | :14:43. | :14:47.
fundraiser, particularly for the Royal British legion. The court | :14:47. | :14:49.
heard she felt isolated, very lonely and that her caring work was | :14:49. | :14:59.
:14:59. | :15:01. | ||
unappreciated. There is no doubt it is an issue, as people are living | :15:01. | :15:07.
longer. And that role of caring can go on for such a long time. | :15:07. | :15:08.
Department of Health told us they "recognise the valuable | :15:08. | :15:11.
contribution carers make, and are committed to ensuring they have | :15:11. | :15:19.
access to high quality support services." This was a hearing noted | :15:19. | :15:24.
for its compassion and sensitivity. The judge and the prosecution and | :15:24. | :15:28.
defence all expressed sympathy. The judge described Parkinson's as a | :15:28. | :15:32.
cruel disease that had a draining, demanding and debilitating effect | :15:32. | :15:41.
on those who cared for the sufferers. | :15:41. | :15:46.
Earlier, I spoke to Val Buxton from Parkinson's UK. I asked her, aside | :15:46. | :15:54.
from Mrs Sandercock's case today, how common a story this was. | :15:54. | :15:58.
All too common, it really. We often hear from carers of people affected | :15:59. | :16:04.
by Parkinson's who tell us just how isolating and overwhelming their | :16:04. | :16:09.
responsibilities can be. A survey of around 3000 carers of people | :16:09. | :16:13.
affected by Parkinson's show that just one in 10 were getting the | :16:13. | :16:18.
support they needed from local services. That is a real concern. | :16:18. | :16:22.
It is likely to get even worse actually with the cuts to | :16:22. | :16:26.
government spending. A recent survey showed that in the south- | :16:26. | :16:30.
west around 80% of carers were fearful that they would get even | :16:30. | :16:35.
less support. We heard briefly from the Department of Health. They also | :16:35. | :16:41.
said there providing 400 million of additional funding to the NHS | :16:41. | :16:45.
between 2011 and 2015 to enable more carers to take breaks from | :16:45. | :16:50.
their responsibilities. So they are putting money into the system. Why | :16:50. | :16:54.
are people not benefiting? Unfortunately the evidence is that | :16:54. | :16:59.
that money is not getting into frontline services. A recent survey | :16:59. | :17:03.
of Primary Care Trusts, that the money was channelled to, said that | :17:03. | :17:11.
very few have actually passed that money on. The overwhelming evidence | :17:11. | :17:16.
was that it simply was not getting through. | :17:16. | :17:18.
The woman whose car plunged down cliffs on the North Coast of | :17:18. | :17:21.
Cornwall has been discharged from hospital today. The 56-year-old | :17:21. | :17:24.
woman spent 18 hours on the cliff face at St Agnes Head after her car | :17:24. | :17:28.
left the road. It's thought she'd become disorientated in thick fog | :17:28. | :17:32.
on Monday afternoon. She was finally rescued in a major | :17:32. | :17:37.
operation yesterday morning. The Plymouth based warship, HMS | :17:37. | :17:39.
Sutherland, which is now involved in action off Libya, has conducted | :17:39. | :17:43.
its first boarding operations. The frigate deployed a team of Royal | :17:43. | :17:46.
Marines to search a merchant vessel with a view to enforcing an arms | :17:46. | :17:53.
embargo. The ship was searched and cleared for onward passage. | :17:53. | :17:55.
The Government has announced it won't hold a public inquiry into | :17:56. | :18:00.
controversial plans for a development at Carlyon Bay. Despite | :18:00. | :18:02.
local opposition, Cornwall Council approved the plans in June, subject | :18:02. | :18:07.
to Government approval. The company behind the project, Commercial | :18:07. | :18:09.
Estates Group, says it's pleased with the decision and it would | :18:09. | :18:15.
involve local people with the scheme's progress. | :18:15. | :18:18.
Hundreds of dolphins have been spotted off the Cornish coast this | :18:18. | :18:21.
week. Wildlife experts say they're being drawn in by large amounts of | :18:21. | :18:25.
fish. They're asking dolphin watchers to enjoy the sight, but to | :18:25. | :18:33.
keep their distance. Eleanor Parkinson has more. | :18:33. | :18:37.
Normally any sum up means basking sharks. This year it is dolphins | :18:37. | :18:42.
and hundreds of them. There has been sightings of common dolphins | :18:42. | :18:48.
all along the south coast of Cornwall. This film was shot off | :18:48. | :18:53.
Penzance. Some of the parts have been 100 strong. Often there will | :18:53. | :19:00.
travelled together, up to 1000 of them. But when they get into a | :19:00. | :19:05.
coastal area the fish start to break down into smaller groups and | :19:05. | :19:12.
they do the same to feed on them. Sometimes they will come racing in. | :19:12. | :19:22.
:19:22. | :19:23. | ||
They seem to love riding along with the catamaran. You see them | :19:23. | :19:30.
socialising together. The experts say enjoy the show, but do not get | :19:30. | :19:40.
:19:40. | :19:40. | ||
too close and treat them with respect. | :19:40. | :19:42.
Plymouth Argyle have announced Southampton Football Club's former | :19:42. | :19:44.
finance director David Jones as the new acting chief executive at Home | :19:44. | :19:48.
Park. He will work alongside acting chairman Peter Ridsdale who is | :19:48. | :19:53.
bidding to buy the club. Jones saw Southampton through successive | :19:53. | :19:57.
relegations and administration. Today he had this message for | :19:57. | :20:06.
Argyle's unpaid staff. They will be paid in full over a | :20:06. | :20:12.
period of time. We would love to be able to pay the Mall on Day One but | :20:12. | :20:19.
whether that is possible, we do not whether that is possible, we do not | :20:20. | :20:27.
know. -- paid them all. There has been quite a contrast | :20:27. | :20:31.
from east to west and that is still there. We still have quite a lot of | :20:31. | :20:36.
cloud around. But further west we have had that glorious sunshine. | :20:36. | :20:40.
And for the rest of the week generally there is a lot more cloud | :20:40. | :20:47.
around. This was their earlier today across Dartmoor where we has | :20:47. | :20:52.
a lot of fine weather. The skies were blue with some sunshine. A lot | :20:52. | :20:59.
of that gave us some fairly high temperatures, getting up to 25, 26 | :20:59. | :21:09.
:21:09. | :21:16. | ||
degrees in a few places. The picture for the next couple of days, | :21:16. | :21:21.
we have a line of cloud approaching from the West. This will give us | :21:22. | :21:30.
some fine drizzle later on tonight. There's one at Maine weather system | :21:30. | :21:37.
just gently drifting over us. By that time we get to lunchtime on | :21:37. | :21:42.
Friday that front has almost gone but has left a legacy of cloud. | :21:42. | :21:51.
That will be stubborn to shift. The high pressure, the one that gives | :21:51. | :21:55.
us the decent weather, it comes in for the weekend which looks very | :21:55. | :22:02.
promising indeed. We have those cloudy conditions across parts of | :22:02. | :22:09.
Dorset and Somerset this evening. And cloud coming into the far west | :22:09. | :22:16.
which will bring a lot of cloud tomorrow. This was earlier today in | :22:16. | :22:23.
Torbay, the Torbay Carnival happening this evening. And the | :22:23. | :22:33.
:22:33. | :22:34. | ||
skies where quite cloudy but that has not stopped the preparations. | :22:34. | :22:40.
The rest of East Devon also has some of that cloud now. Tonight it | :22:40. | :22:43.
will start to break up a little and at the same time the weather front | :22:43. | :22:49.
is coming in from the Atlantic bring a little fine drizzle in some | :22:49. | :22:59.
:22:59. | :23:03. | ||
areas. Tomorrow, at misty start for most of us. But into the afternoon, | :23:03. | :23:10.
becoming largely dry although quite a lot of cloud coming in. Still a | :23:10. | :23:20.
:23:20. | :23:27. | ||
relatively warm. Quite a humoured For the Isles of Scilly, the | :23:28. | :23:37.
:23:38. | :24:12. | ||
sunshine breaking through later in The forecast for the way through | :24:12. | :24:19.
and including the weekend, it looks quite promising. Cloud around on | :24:19. | :24:23.
Friday, which will break up through the day to allow the sunshine to | :24:23. | :24:27.
come through. But also the possibility of some showers | :24:27. | :24:33.
developing mainly course Dorset and Somerset. But by the weekend that | :24:33. | :24:39.
area of high pressure is back which means a lovely weekend in store and | :24:39. | :24:43.
quite warm as well. Up to 25 quite warm as well. Up to 25 | :24:43. | :24:51.
degrees. That's it from us in the studio | :24:51. | :24:54.
here in Plymouth, but we can now go back to Simon, who's live in | :24:54. | :25:02.
Weymouth as the countdown to the 2012 Olympics really begins. | :25:02. | :25:08.
Let's hope the weather stays good for the Olympics next year. | :25:09. | :25:18.
:25:19. | :25:19. | ||
Let's hope so. The anticipation is warming up certainly. But the main | :25:19. | :25:26.
celebrations tonight are taking place in the Aquatic Centre in the | :25:26. | :25:30.
heart of the Olympic village in London's east end. Plymouth's very | :25:31. | :25:33.
own Olympic diver, Tom Daley, will be performing there in just a few | :25:33. | :25:38.
minutes time. He'll be the first person to plunge off the curved | :25:38. | :25:42.
concrete diving platforms there. Earlier, Claire Balding managed to | :25:42. | :25:52.
:25:52. | :25:52. | ||
catch up with him for a chat. I am delighted that Tom Daley could | :25:52. | :25:58.
join as here. We're on the edge of the aquatic pull. And there is the | :25:58. | :26:02.
ten-metre platform. You will be diving off their tonight. Are you | :26:02. | :26:09.
nervous? I am quite nervous but I'm also so excited. It is quite a lot | :26:09. | :26:13.
of pressure to do the first official died. But it looks great | :26:13. | :26:19.
and you can just imagine the Olympic atmosphere next year. | :26:19. | :26:24.
Usually proud to be representing Great Britain and the south-west? | :26:24. | :26:32.
Definitely. The south-west has been so supportive of me. Everyone is | :26:32. | :26:37.
going to get so excited about the Olympic Games next year. It will | :26:37. | :26:43.
give everyone that extra but most. But you also have to keep on with | :26:43. | :26:48.
the basics, the boring stuff, the training. That is the most | :26:48. | :26:52.
important thing in the career of any athlete. So what is important | :26:52. | :26:57.
that I keep on training and balancing that with school work, | :26:57. | :27:04.
media, and family life. And that is why a you're going to downgrade the | :27:04. | :27:10.
school work a little bit? I will do that from January. I will do full- | :27:10. | :27:15.
time training to make sure I have enough hours in the pool. And then | :27:15. | :27:21.
do my school work in between training sessions. Do you have any | :27:21. | :27:26.
idea which died you will be before Ming? I'm not sure yet. I will have | :27:26. | :27:29.
to see which one will be good enough to look good on the cameras | :27:29. | :27:35. |
