Accused of a five`year stalking campaign ending in a stabbing at | :00:15. | :00:21.
this Exeter Cemetery. Joe Whllis denied attempted murder but admitted | :00:22. | :00:25.
grievous bodily harm. We will hear from the trial. | :00:26. | :00:30.
Some set charity for injured serviceman is wound down. An enquiry | :00:31. | :00:34.
has been held into Afghan hdroes after concerns on how it was being | :00:35. | :00:39.
run. The elderly patient who claims he had to dial nine and nind from | :00:40. | :00:43.
his hospital bed to get staff to help him. And the first of three | :00:44. | :00:47.
controversial incinerators hn the region gets ready to start burning. | :00:48. | :00:53.
A five year campaign of stalking culminated in the attempted murder | :00:54. | :00:57.
of a woman on the streets of a Devon city, a jury has heard. Joe Willis | :00:58. | :01:00.
today admitted grievous bodhly harm by stabbing Helen Pearson in Exeter | :01:01. | :01:03.
last year, but denied trying to murder her. Our Home Affairs | :01:04. | :01:07.
Correspondent, Simon Hall rdports from Exeter Crown court. | :01:08. | :01:13.
Helen Pearson was stabbed in the attack in daylight outside Dxeter | :01:14. | :01:20.
city centre. The prosecution say it was the commendation of a fhve`year | :01:21. | :01:25.
campaign of stalking which hncluded attacks on her flat and car, abusive | :01:26. | :01:30.
letters and a dead cat being left on her doorstep. Joe Willis, the | :01:31. | :01:35.
prosecution say, was obsessdd with Helen and consumed with hostility | :01:36. | :01:39.
because one night she refusdd to go with him to see a band. The court | :01:40. | :01:43.
heard she was walking along the street when the attacker cale from | :01:44. | :01:47.
behind and stabbed her. He dragged her into the cemetery. He h`d a pair | :01:48. | :01:54.
of scissors with a long blade in his hand and a murderous look in his | :01:55. | :01:59.
eyes. Helen screamed and a passing motorist heard and came to her aid, | :02:00. | :02:04.
pushed the attacker away and it allowed Helen to escape. Thd jury | :02:05. | :02:05.
was shown letters. The court heard Mr Willis dhalled | :02:06. | :02:21.
999 and told the police, I think I may have injured somebody qtite | :02:22. | :02:26.
badly today. He later told `n officer they might as well charge | :02:27. | :02:31.
me, I am guilty, I did it. The case was interrupted when Joe Willis | :02:32. | :02:34.
appeared to break down in tdars and cry, " I am sorry.". He as `dmitted | :02:35. | :02:43.
grievous bodily de harm `` bodily harm but denies attempted mtrder. | :02:44. | :02:48.
The Somerset based charity @fghan Heroes is being wound down. The | :02:49. | :02:52.
Charity Commission started `n inquiry last year because of | :02:53. | :02:55.
concerns about how it was bding run. The Commission appointed an interim | :02:56. | :02:58.
manager and he has now written to volunteers to say that the charity | :02:59. | :03:01.
is no longer a viable concern. Here's Clinton Rogers. It w`s a | :03:02. | :03:11.
charity launched through grhef. Denise Harris set it up aftdr losing | :03:12. | :03:17.
her son in Afghanistan. Fivd years on and already under investhgation | :03:18. | :03:20.
by the Charity Commission, now it is close to collapse. Its volunteer | :03:21. | :03:25.
supporters have been sent a letter saying: | :03:26. | :03:33.
Tony Hall is one of those to receive a letter from the charity's interim | :03:34. | :03:44.
manager. He raised ?20,000 for Afghan Heroes. Fund raising is my | :03:45. | :03:51.
life. I was doing things th`t I never did as a teenager that I am | :03:52. | :03:56.
doing now. As well as being is told to stop raising money, you were told | :03:57. | :04:00.
if you had any merchant dies, get rid of it. Why? Because it hs not | :04:01. | :04:06.
worth their while coming to collect it. It is worthless. Afghan Heroes | :04:07. | :04:12.
is under investigation by the Charity Commission who say they have | :04:13. | :04:16.
concerns about the loss of charity funds and unauthorised trustee | :04:17. | :04:23.
benefits. One of the main ftnctions was to set up a retreat for homeless | :04:24. | :04:29.
soldiers. Four are living at this home near Glastonbury. Efforts are | :04:30. | :04:35.
now being made to find them new accommodation. The Charity | :04:36. | :04:38.
Commission wouldn't comment today beyond repeating that they had | :04:39. | :04:43.
serious concerns about Afgh`n Heroes and the way the trustees were | :04:44. | :04:48.
operating. They are producing a report on what went wrong hdre, | :04:49. | :04:53.
where exactly was the money spent. My understanding is that report will | :04:54. | :04:54.
not be published for some thme. A drunk daughter from Plymotth who | :04:55. | :05:01.
suffocated her sick mother with a pillow has been convicted of her | :05:02. | :05:04.
murder. 49`year`old Angela Douglas, of Redhill Close, killed 73`year`old | :05:05. | :05:07.
Anne Matthews last April, s`ying she wanted to end her pain. Plylouth | :05:08. | :05:14.
Crown Court heard Douglas h`d drunk two and a half bottles of whne | :05:15. | :05:17.
before she went upstairs to smother her mum who had emphysema. | :05:18. | :05:23.
Meanwhile in Cornwall detectives are investigating a murder in C`mborne. | :05:24. | :05:26.
The body of 63`year`old Terry Oldham was found at a property in the town | :05:27. | :05:31.
on Tuesday. Three men and a woman have been arrested and are being | :05:32. | :05:41.
held in custody. A major search for a missing | :05:42. | :05:46.
fisherman has been steps down. A small boat was washed up on the | :05:47. | :05:51.
shore near Seatown. Local coastguard rescue teams have been searching | :05:52. | :05:59.
parts of the Devon coastlind. One of three controversial inciner`tors | :06:00. | :06:02.
being built to deliveries of rubbish for burning today. The Energy from | :06:03. | :06:08.
Waste plant in Exeter will be switched on later this week ahead of | :06:09. | :06:11.
full scale operations starthng in July. Similar plants at Devonport | :06:12. | :06:14.
and St Dennis in Cornwall are in the pipeline. Spotlight's Hamish | :06:15. | :06:19.
Marshall reports. After eight years of planning and a price tag of 45 | :06:20. | :06:25.
million, this incinerator or officially waste room energx plant | :06:26. | :06:30.
is ready for business. The first rubbish arrived today. 40 truckloads | :06:31. | :06:36.
a day will come here. Previously the waste would have gone to landfill. | :06:37. | :06:41.
There is a lorry coming in dropping off its waste into the pit `nd it is | :06:42. | :06:47.
taken into the kiln where it is burnt to create energy. It will | :06:48. | :06:51.
produce electricity which whll go into the National Grid and hn the | :06:52. | :06:55.
long run, we are hoping it would be used to create heat for district | :06:56. | :07:00.
housing. It is claimed it would be enough for 500 houses. Experts have | :07:01. | :07:06.
been monitoring the air quality before the plant opens to sde what | :07:07. | :07:10.
difference the burning makes. The Environment Agency says it will | :07:11. | :07:14.
check what is being put into the atmosphere by the plant. Opponents | :07:15. | :07:19.
say microscopic particles in the air can cause cancer and heart disease. | :07:20. | :07:25.
You can see it poking up and it will be blowing the smoke in our | :07:26. | :07:30.
direction on the south`westdrly wind most of the time. It won't be good. | :07:31. | :07:38.
Even if the toxins go out in two liquid and solid waste, that is | :07:39. | :07:44.
bound to be toxins in the sloke The operators say the site will be safe | :07:45. | :07:50.
but will plants like this encourage us to stop recycling? Devon county | :07:51. | :07:55.
council hopes not. It must tp its recycling from 55% to 65%. @fter | :07:56. | :08:02.
this testing phase, the plant starts operating at full capacity from | :08:03. | :08:09.
July. Work on similar plans at Devonport and Saint`Denis in | :08:10. | :08:14.
Cornwall is continuing. This plant with its high stack has changed the | :08:15. | :08:19.
skyline of Exeter. It is a large facility and with that welcome | :08:20. | :08:22.
scrutiny. Once it opens in July many will be keen to ensure the | :08:23. | :08:26.
emissions coming out of herd are safe. | :08:27. | :08:35.
Denver are mental campaigners say a coral is at risk of being | :08:36. | :08:42.
overwhelmed by silt dredged from Devonport dockyard. They ard calling | :08:43. | :08:44.
on the Marine Management Organisation to protect the coral. | :08:45. | :08:57.
These are a nationally scarce species. Their presence was an | :08:58. | :09:05.
important factor in closing off a large area of the sea from dredging | :09:06. | :09:13.
and other damaging operations. They also found in Whitsand Bay hn | :09:14. | :09:18.
south`east Cornwall, includhng the recently designated marine | :09:19. | :09:21.
conservation zone. 1 million tonnes of salt has been deposited from | :09:22. | :09:27.
Devonport dockyard in Whits`nd Bay since 1997. Campaigners havd | :09:28. | :09:30.
objected to the practice. One of them has written to the milk `` has | :09:31. | :09:38.
written to the Marine Managdment Organisation about his concdrns In | :09:39. | :09:45.
2006, they used a precautionary principle to protect other species | :09:46. | :09:52.
and this one which was the right thing to do. I am upset abott the | :09:53. | :09:56.
fact that they are not using the same principle in our bay hdre. | :09:57. | :10:03.
Keith Hiscock is a marine bhologist who has dived the area wherd silt | :10:04. | :10:06.
has been deposited from the dockyard. He took these photographs | :10:07. | :10:17.
in 2007 which so `` which show them surrounded by silt deposits. It | :10:18. | :10:23.
looks like the bottom of thd Taymor now. It looks quite healthy. It has | :10:24. | :10:29.
a dogfish attached to it. It is not suffering too much. I think parts of | :10:30. | :10:38.
the reef will be completely submerged now. The Marine M`nagement | :10:39. | :10:43.
Organisation has carried out organisations `` studies and says it | :10:44. | :10:48.
has considered the effects hn the Marine conservation zone and says it | :10:49. | :10:51.
will monitor what happens and take action if it sees evidence of the | :10:52. | :10:58.
silt having significant effdct. For now, it is not considering further | :10:59. | :11:15.
investigations. Young peopld are being allowed to spray graffiti | :11:16. | :11:17.
around towns in West Dorset without fear of being arrested. The local | :11:18. | :11:21.
council has helped them show what they can do on walkways and | :11:22. | :11:24.
underpasses. Not everyone lhkes the final result but the scheme's had | :11:25. | :11:27.
plenty of support. Simon Cldmison has been finding out about the | :11:28. | :11:34.
changing face of public art. Statues are not out of place in west Dorset. | :11:35. | :11:39.
In the realm of public art, there is a new kid on the block. Welcome to | :11:40. | :11:49.
Sherborne and Dorchester and Bridport. Away from the birds | :11:50. | :11:54.
singing, the sound of paintdrs spring. Legally and encouraged. | :11:55. | :12:02.
Graffiti has been around forever. This is interesting because it is | :12:03. | :12:09.
endorsed, it is legal and b`cked by council members. These aren't the | :12:10. | :12:15.
first rural towns to look more urban and street artists think thdir work | :12:16. | :12:25.
would want to be where you would least expect. I would like to see | :12:26. | :12:32.
street art in this part of Dorset. I am an artist and a visually led | :12:33. | :12:38.
world is a good thing. It mhght seem incongruous but it is nice to see it | :12:39. | :12:44.
and everyone should see it. A new gallery on the street. The `ltered | :12:45. | :12:49.
the `` the ultimate dream of a movement and appealing to a wider | :12:50. | :12:54.
audience. It is still in alleyways and underpasses. The artists believe | :12:55. | :13:01.
there is a limit. You have this Jurassic Coast and these be`utiful | :13:02. | :13:08.
towns and lots of heritage `round. Putting a FET `` graffiti phece on | :13:09. | :13:23.
Portland stone is wrong. Covering the concrete is not right for some. | :13:24. | :13:29.
Opinions are as divided as dver I have been here for 30 years and we | :13:30. | :13:33.
have never had anything likd this before and I don't think a lot of | :13:34. | :13:39.
the children take any noticd of it. It is a lot of rubbish. It shows | :13:40. | :13:46.
what young people can do. I think there should be more. The social | :13:47. | :13:52.
good it may deliver is not `lways clear as the paint on the w`lls | :13:53. | :13:58.
Having the time to complete the job without running off for fear of | :13:59. | :14:03.
being caught is about more `bout producing a result. People stop by | :14:04. | :14:09.
and ask them what they are doing. They are beginning to make friends. | :14:10. | :14:14.
The younger guys and the artists are talking to the elderly residents. It | :14:15. | :14:26.
is a bold move. Success will find out if you think this is thd good, | :14:27. | :14:34.
the bad or the ugly. Coming up, why some forms of graffiti are being | :14:35. | :14:43.
given the go`ahead. Plus thd storm hit community doing their bht to win | :14:44. | :14:48.
back the tourists. River levels are rising agahn after | :14:49. | :14:51.
a weekend of heavy rain. Find out what the weather is doing for the | :14:52. | :14:59.
next few days. An elderly c`ncer patient claims he was forced to dial | :15:00. | :15:03.
999 after staff ignored his calls for help. Peter Tizzard was at | :15:04. | :15:09.
Dorset County Council when he made the call and said he experidnced | :15:10. | :15:12.
severe pain and hand receivdd assistance in the ward. The hospital | :15:13. | :15:20.
says the ward was fully staffed and his action was not necessarx. The | :15:21. | :15:27.
second week of the inquest hnto the fatal crash on the M5 has bden | :15:28. | :15:31.
hearing from a weather expert. Seven people died and 51 were injtred in | :15:32. | :15:35.
the crash in November 2011. This afternoon the inquest heard from an | :15:36. | :15:38.
expert from the Met Office who looked into weather conditions on | :15:39. | :15:41.
the night of the accident. Now it's happened to many of us you | :15:42. | :15:45.
come back from a holiday and discover a huge mobile phond bill | :15:46. | :15:49.
because of data roaming. But spare a thought for those living along the | :15:50. | :15:53.
Purbeck coast in Dorset. Sole have found their phones switching to a | :15:54. | :15:56.
network in France! It's bec`use their own networks aren't strong | :15:57. | :15:59.
enough. Ofcom says refunds `ren t always given. | :16:00. | :16:05.
When you are at home, it is locked onto your network. When you are | :16:06. | :16:12.
away, it could be grabbing the strongest signal. Your home network | :16:13. | :16:19.
may be available. By locking your phone onto your home network, you | :16:20. | :16:25.
will avoid roaming charges. Public swimming pools in a town are | :16:26. | :16:32.
facing an uncertain future. They say they cannot subsidise the pools in | :16:33. | :16:36.
Tavistock without cutting front line services `` services. | :16:37. | :16:42.
Sue has been swimming here six days a week for the past eight ydars She | :16:43. | :16:47.
could soon be faced with having to find an alternative. The loss would | :16:48. | :16:55.
be substantial. It has been a place of refuge, a place of mental | :16:56. | :17:03.
relaxation, a place where I hope I keep fit and keep up with mx regular | :17:04. | :17:08.
exercise. This pool will soon be full of children but even at its | :17:09. | :17:12.
busiest times, the council says it is still making a loss and can't | :17:13. | :17:17.
afford to subsidise it at its current level past 2016. Thhs pool | :17:18. | :17:23.
in Okehampton has a larger turnover as it has a gym but its futtre is | :17:24. | :17:28.
also uncertain. West Devon Borough Council spends ?150,000 a ydar | :17:29. | :17:34.
subsidising both pools. That amounts to 4% of council tax payers money. | :17:35. | :17:39.
Over the next ten years, thd local authority estimates it will cost | :17:40. | :17:45.
over ?1 million to maintain facilities. One option would be to | :17:46. | :17:49.
close the pool. That is not something the council wants to do. | :17:50. | :17:52.
It clearly wants to keep thd public facility available and that would be | :17:53. | :17:58.
an absolute last resort which is why we are looking at all of thd options | :17:59. | :18:02.
to provide a public swimming facility. What are the options? One | :18:03. | :18:08.
is to make the Olympic legacy Paul accessible to the public if the | :18:09. | :18:12.
school is successful in raising the funding to bring it here. Sdcond is | :18:13. | :18:16.
a community takeover, third, to renew the current contract `nd the | :18:17. | :18:24.
fourth is closure. This offdr these parents, is not an option. Ly little | :18:25. | :18:30.
boy has started to swim and is getting really confident. If they | :18:31. | :18:35.
take it away, we will have to go to Plymouth. I have been coming here | :18:36. | :18:40.
since I was five and I am now 2 . If it was too close, I would h`ve | :18:41. | :18:44.
nowhere to do swimming lessons. I walk here. A public consult`tion | :18:45. | :18:50.
will begin in the next two lonths before a decision is made l`te in | :18:51. | :18:55.
the year. Time for the sport now and Dave s | :18:56. | :18:59.
here with heartbreak for Sotth West rugby. | :19:00. | :19:05.
Both the region's Championship clubs have been eliminated from the | :19:06. | :19:08.
quarterfinals of the British and Irish Cup. Plymouth Albion were well | :19:09. | :19:11.
beaten 41`21 at Leeds and the Cornish Pirates have exited the | :19:12. | :19:14.
competition, going down to Pontypridd in Penzance. BBC Radio | :19:15. | :19:16.
Cornwall's Dick Straughan t`kes up the story on a 16`14 defeat. | :19:17. | :19:29.
Driving on. A try to the Cornish Pirates. They score with 40 minutes | :19:30. | :19:33.
played. Wrestling their way to two letres | :19:34. | :19:48.
short of the line. It is another try. | :19:49. | :19:55.
A seagull swoops low. Strikds it through the upright. | :19:56. | :20:10.
A little disappointed. We ptt all our eggs in one basket. It hs | :20:11. | :20:18.
disappointing. The best teal won on the day. Big boys are prettx | :20:19. | :20:23.
distressed. We have three g`mes left to go. We have to show heart and | :20:24. | :20:28.
commitment. That was our ch`nce for another game. It was not to be. | :20:29. | :20:41.
All three Devon clubs went down without scoring. Plymouth Argyle's | :20:42. | :20:47.
play`off chances are fading fast after a one goal reverse at Burton | :20:48. | :20:50.
Albion. It's their third match without a win and they're now five | :20:51. | :20:53.
points behind the play`off group. Argyle do have a game in hand which | :20:54. | :20:57.
is tomorrow night at Newport County. Exeter City have slipped into | :20:58. | :21:00.
relegation trouble again. Their second loss in a row came at Bury by | :21:01. | :21:04.
two goals to nil to leave them just four points off the exit door into | :21:05. | :21:08.
the Conference ` a league Torquay United are staring in the f`ce. | :21:09. | :21:11.
They're ten points from survival with only five games left to play | :21:12. | :21:14.
after going down to a Scunthorpe United penalty at Plainmoor. They | :21:15. | :21:17.
had the opportunity to equalise from the spot themselves, but Dale Tonge | :21:18. | :21:20.
squandered the chance to le`ve them almost down and out. | :21:21. | :21:32.
Finally, it's the start of the Commonwealth Games swimming trials | :21:33. | :21:35.
this week and tomorrow night here on Spotlight, we'll have a special | :21:36. | :21:38.
report on the England head coach and Plymouth College director of | :21:39. | :21:41.
swimming Jon Rudd. We'll look at how Rudd looks after his intern`tional | :21:42. | :21:44.
swimmers at the crack of dawn at the Plymouth Life Centre, also cosseting | :21:45. | :21:48.

That's this time tomorrow hdre on BBC One. | :21:52. | :22:00.
It's eight weeks since Porthleven harbour in Cornwall was inundated by | :22:01. | :22:05.
the storm waves. Boats were damaged as the sea crashed through the huge | :22:06. | :22:08.
wooden gate which normally protects the moorings. | :22:09. | :22:10.
Traders in the village are keen to make sure visitors know thex are | :22:11. | :22:13.
open for business, so they've made their own video to prove it. | :22:14. | :22:17.
Spotlights David George has been watching it and meeting the people | :22:18. | :22:18.
who took part. This will bring a smile to xour | :22:19. | :22:34.
face. It has had 1200 views on the Internet. Welcome to Porthldven I | :22:35. | :22:43.
have lived here for 30 years but have not seen the sea as aggressive | :22:44. | :22:49.
as it was over those few daxs. We all worked together. We all cleaned | :22:50. | :22:58.
up and spruced ourselves down. We bring you this message to come down. | :22:59. | :23:15.
Did he fall over? No, he didn't Pasty shops are open for business. | :23:16. | :23:27.
This is the community spirit. It has pulled the community togethdr. | :23:28. | :23:35.
Everyone has engaged and it was a really fun day. There is thd beach. | :23:36. | :23:42.
Here is the harbour. Enjoyed by adults and kids. We have had such a | :23:43. | :23:51.
hard winter and it is been so hard for Porthleven. It is open for | :23:52. | :23:57.
business and back trading again We are waiting for you. We are open for | :23:58. | :24:14.
business. We are open for btsiness. And don't it feel good? All right | :24:15. | :24:24.
now. Who is this lunatic in a lobster suit? We did share ht so | :24:25. | :24:34.
there are a few lunatics. It has Porthleven written all the way | :24:35. | :24:42.
through it. Who knew they were such good fun. | :24:43. | :24:47.
Well done. It is time for the weather now. | :24:48. | :24:56.
If you saw more than 100 yards because of that low cloud, there is | :24:57. | :25:03.
some good news because it is much drier. There will be some stnshine. | :25:04. | :25:14.
Perhaps feeling pressure. It is much clearer now. It is a fresher feel. | :25:15. | :25:26.
It will be a cold night to night. We have an area of low pressurd which | :25:27. | :25:32.
is a long way off at the molent It gets closer as we get to thd middle | :25:33. | :25:36.
of the day. On Wednesday, it is across southern Britain. We may have | :25:37. | :25:45.
more in the way of sunshine. Looking at the detail, you can see the line | :25:46. | :25:50.
of cloud that formed earlier this afternoon. That is still yet to | :25:51. | :25:54.
clear. It is moving pretty fast and over the next hour, it will be gone. | :25:55. | :26:02.
We have lengthy clear spells and the odd light shower. They are fleeting | :26:03. | :26:08.
and it becomes dry. It is still quite breezy but very good | :26:09. | :26:15.
visibility. Overnight temperatures down to six Celsius. It is ` cold | :26:16. | :26:18.
night compared to the last few nights. Expect a few showers in the | :26:19. | :26:27.
morning. We have some lengthy spells of sunshine towards the end of the | :26:28. | :26:31.
day, particularly across eastern parts of Devon. We get tempdratures | :26:32. | :26:42.
up to 13 Celsius. It is still quite cold in the wind so you will need to | :26:43. | :26:48.
wrap up warm. For the Isles of Scilly, a much better day. | :26:49. | :26:55.
A dry week ahead. Late in the week, a lot more cloud around but it is | :26:56. | :27:29.
still dry. Have a good evenhng. That is worth hearing. That is it | :27:30. | :27:41.
from us for tonight. We will be back tomorrow. From all of us here, good | :27:42. | :27:43. |
