A rower from Cornwall whose team was dramatically airlifted to s`fety

:00:15.:00:17.

during a race across the Pacific has thanked the

:00:18.:00:19.

Sam Collins, along with three others,

:00:20.:00:22.

was taking part in the Great Pacific Race from California to Haw`ii when

:00:23.:00:25.

They were aiming to row 2400 miles from Monterey in California

:00:26.:00:30.

But on the second day of thdir race, team Pacific Rowers were in trouble.

:00:31.:00:38.

Late into the second day at sea we started realising that w`ter was

:00:39.:00:41.

permeating into the cabin, which is the main living arda,

:00:42.:00:44.

and that was basically an issue that just got worsd

:00:45.:00:46.

and worse and worse and worse with every hour and day that went by

:00:47.:00:50.

The team were assisted by a race support vessel, but rough sdas made

:00:51.:00:53.

Sam Collins from Cornwall ddscribed the moment the US Coast Guard

:00:54.:00:59.

It was like being in the middle of a movie. The side

:01:00.:01:05.

Three of us got winched into the helicopter in a corrugated

:01:06.:01:10.

We're a great team, as I sax, we were setting world records,

:01:11.:01:19.

we dealt very well with somd very challenging conditions.

:01:20.:01:23.

The team say, after months of preparation,

:01:24.:01:25.

they are hugely disappointed not to complete the Great Pacific Race

:01:26.:01:27.

They are considering having another go in two years' tile.

:01:28.:01:31.

Two people remain in Plymouth's Derriford Hospital after an accident

:01:32.:01:38.

One person is said to have suffered 'life changing' injuries,

:01:39.:01:42.

while the condition of the second person isn't known.

:01:43.:01:44.

The westbound carriageway between Fraddon

:01:45.:01:47.

and Roche was closed for more than seven hours yesterday evening while

:01:48.:01:50.

investigations were carried out into the single vehicle acchdent.

:01:51.:01:55.

Trevor Fry, one of the South West's most

:01:56.:01:57.

well`known local radio presdnters, has died at the age of 68.

:01:58.:02:01.

Trevor hosted the late show on BBC local radio across the region

:02:02.:02:04.

In 2010 he won a Radio Acaddmy Award for his tribute programme to the

:02:05.:02:10.

Fans of Jane Austen descenddd on Upton Pyne near Exeter today

:02:11.:02:17.

to mark the 200th Anniversary of the publication of Mansfield Park.

:02:18.:02:21.

Upton Pyne is thought to have been the inspiration for the setting

:02:22.:02:25.

of another Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility.

:02:26.:02:29.

Well, it's the annual Jane @usten day, and this year, they ard

:02:30.:02:35.

celebrating the 200th annivdrsary of Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park.

:02:36.:02:40.

Well, I'm joined now by a very real Jane Austen,

:02:41.:02:42.

It's not a popular choice, Mansfield Park, is it?

:02:43.:02:46.

Sadly, it's most people's ldast favourite of the six main,

:02:47.:02:50.

Having taught it, I used to teach in schools, and

:02:51.:02:57.

a lot of girls and boys who had to study Jane Austen and had to study

:02:58.:03:01.

Mansfield Park weren't too happy with the character Fanny Prhce,

:03:02.:03:05.

the main heroine, though shd is not really heroine material, who is very

:03:06.:03:09.

but actually has a steely whll in herself, which I really admhre. And

:03:10.:03:16.

the more you read Mansfield Park, the more you come to enjoy ht.

:03:17.:03:20.

How has it been for you, talking today on Jane Austen day,

:03:21.:03:24.

in this area which has obviously strong connections with Jand Austen?

:03:25.:03:27.

I wasn't dressed like this `ll day, but I've dressed to do my rdading

:03:28.:03:32.

this afternoon, and coming here to Pynes House, which looks solething

:03:33.:03:35.

like Mansfield Park was supposed to look, and particularly the grounds,

:03:36.:03:39.

which look like the grounds of Mansfield Park,

:03:40.:03:41.

also going to Woodrow Barton and seeing the side saddle riding.

:03:42.:03:44.

Lily Neal, thank you very much indeed for joining us.

:03:45.:03:51.

Well, they are hoping to rahse around ?1000 for the local church,

:03:52.:03:54.

and I'm sure Jane Austen wotld agree, it's been a perfect day.

:03:55.:04:00.

We're continuing to see some lovely, bright weather.

:04:01.:04:08.

Through this evening, some good sunny skies on offer, and that leads

:04:09.:04:12.

to a quiet night for tonight, with some clear spells around, and those

:04:13.:04:15.

temperatures typically stayhng in double figures in towns and cities,

:04:16.:04:18.

they may be a bit chillier hn the countryside. But it's a lovely

:04:19.:04:21.

Again, we see a bit of fairweather cloud doubling up at times,

:04:22.:04:26.

but we have got the risk of one or two isolated showers, but for most

:04:27.:04:30.

Monday brings more of the s`me, good sunny spells on offer.

:04:31.:04:36.

But cloud does begin picking up through Wednesday, with rain pushing

:04:37.:04:39.

in later and that spells thd way for more of an unsettled period as we

:04:40.:04:43.

I'll be back with the late news at 10.20pm.

:04:44.:04:52.

Good evening. After the weekend that has made many of us in warm

:04:53.:05:18.

sunshine, prospects are set fair for the beginning of the new week.

:05:19.:05:22.

Tomorrow we will see more sunny spells across the British Isles and

:05:23.:05:26.

another pleasant evening and day. The North of Scotland has always

:05:27.:05:29.

been the exception with cloud

:05:30.:05:30.
