Hello there. The 1st of December is, of course, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
the first day of meteorological winter | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
and, for some of us, we saw some appropriately wintry weather. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
This was the view in the Highlands. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
Thanks to our weather-watcher for sending that in. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Yes, we saw some snow in some parts of Scotland | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
but the snow turned back to rain | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
during the day as milder air | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
filtered its way north behind this weather front. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
In fact, for the south, with a little bit of sunshine, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
we saw temperatures as high as 15 degrees. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Very, very mild for the time of year. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
A mild night to follow | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
but some wind and rain gets into Scotland | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
and Northern Ireland overnight, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
that will drift its way southwards. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
It'll get a bit stuck across Wales and northern England | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
through the day but it does leave behind | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
a pretty reasonable day across most of Scotland. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Bar the odd shower in the far north, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
most places enjoying some decent spells of sunshine. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
7 or 8 degrees and not particularly windy, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
it looks like a good winter's afternoon, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
as it will be across most of Northern Ireland. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
Very different though for northern England. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Lots of cloud and outbreaks of rain, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
mainly in the north-west. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
Across Wales, it will be quite cloudy, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
quite wet, some of the rain quite heavy | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
and we're going to have to watch | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
the rainfall totals here in particular | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
because they will be totting up in the next few days. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
It's slightly drier in the Midlands, if rather cloudy, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
and similar conditions across East Anglia, the south-east | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
and most of those southern counties, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
very mild again, 12 or 13 degrees. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Through the evening, that band of rain | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
doesn't really move too far too quickly. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
It's still there across Wales, parts of northern England. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
It's mild south of that, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
11, 12 degrees but quite cold further north, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
a touch of frost in parts of Scotland, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
maybe into Northern Ireland as well. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
Now, let's look at the big picture for Thursday | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
because that weather front | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
is still there or thereabouts, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
draped across that central swathe of the UK, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
not really moving too far too quickly | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
so it will be another wet day, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
particularly across Wales. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
And some of that rain just creeping away | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
from northern England down into the Midlands | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
but south of that, again, it stays essentially dry, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
cloudy, breezy and mild once again. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Temperatures here will be around about | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
12 or 13 degrees once again. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
To the north of that, we are firmly | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
in single figures, 4 or 5 degrees there | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
for Glasgow, Belfast and Aberdeen. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Meanwhile, Thursday night into Friday, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
that weather front finally gets a move-on, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
pushes its way towards the near continent. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
It should leave behind a reasonable day | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
for many parts of the UK. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
Once we get rid of that rain from the south-east, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
there should be some sunshine following along | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
behind but maybe not for all. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
Quite cloudy through the afternoon, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
I expect, across the far south-east. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
More wind and rain showing its hand | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
later in the day across the far north and west. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
And this weather front's got a lot of isobars | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
on either side of it so it will be a windy start | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
to the weekend and quite a wet one too. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
The rain and the stronger winds | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22
moving their way southwards and eastwards | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
all the while with something a bit drier | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
and brighter following on behind | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
but the next batch of rain already pushing into Scotland. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Some of that may turn | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
to a little bit of snow over higher ground. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Second part of the weekend, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
yet another area of low pressure heads our way. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Lots of isobars again so it's going | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
to be quite windy for the second part of the weekend | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
as well and quite wet as well. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
And again, some of that rain turns to snow | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
over the higher ground of Scotland. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
But in the south, out of the rain, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
it's relatively mild once again, 13 or 14 degrees. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
And it's all being driven by a very strong jet stream | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
which will still be with us into the early part of next week, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
a series of low pressure systems running along that. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
At its core, the strength of winds probably 170mph or maybe more, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
that should just ease off a little bit Tuesday-Wednesday which | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
will allow the jet stream to meander which allows high pressure to | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
build in from the south and that should settle things down | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
at least temporarily but it really doesn't last very long at all. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
By Thursday or so, we're pretty much back to square one with | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
a powerful jet bringing further spells of wind and rain. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
So the outlook, generally speaking, pretty unsettled. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
It'll be windy or very windy with some rain at times | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
but as that temporary ridge of high pressure builds in, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
we might just see a touch of frost. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
Christmas Day may be the highlight of the holidays... | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Oh, yes. ..but all that pressure in the kitchen... | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36 |
