After a record-breaking mild but wet December,

0:00:030:00:06

we've become accustomed to seeing spring bulbs in the garden,

0:00:060:00:09

but all that warmth brought the moisture

0:00:090:00:11

and the record-breaking floods as well,

0:00:110:00:14

but I suspect any lying water still in the fields

0:00:140:00:16

may freeze over over the next coming days.

0:00:160:00:18

It's all change and, unfortunately,

0:00:180:00:21

our spring bulbs may well get shrouded

0:00:210:00:24

in some light snow for a time.

0:00:240:00:25

More on that in just a moment, but let's move back to the here and now.

0:00:250:00:29

Low pressure still in the driving seat

0:00:290:00:32

and producing outbreaks of rain for Monday,

0:00:320:00:35

the most heavy and persistent,

0:00:350:00:37

perhaps, across the Peaks and Pennines

0:00:370:00:39

with some hill snow here into north-east England

0:00:390:00:42

and south-east Scotland.

0:00:420:00:43

Elsewhere, it's a case of sunny spells

0:00:430:00:45

and scattered showers,

0:00:450:00:46

but some of those showers

0:00:460:00:48

still a bit of a nuisance.

0:00:480:00:49

Frequent ones into the Northern

0:00:490:00:51

and Western Isles, in particular.

0:00:510:00:52

It's going to feel quite cool

0:00:520:00:54

here into the afternoon

0:00:540:00:55

with a strong wind, four or five degrees,

0:00:550:00:57

but some drier weather

0:00:570:00:58

through the bulk of Scotland

0:00:580:00:59

through the day. Sunny spells

0:00:590:01:01

and showers into Northern Ireland.

0:01:010:01:02

There's our rain I've already mentioned.

0:01:020:01:05

Elsewhere, there will be some showers around,

0:01:050:01:07

hopefully some brightness from time to time,

0:01:070:01:09

but some of those showers pretty organised

0:01:090:01:11

south of the M4 corridor

0:01:110:01:13

with highs of six to nine degrees.

0:01:130:01:15

The low does drift off into the North Sea

0:01:150:01:17

Monday night into Tuesday,

0:01:170:01:19

allowing the isobars to swing round

0:01:190:01:21

to more of a northerly direction,

0:01:210:01:22

and allowing the first signs

0:01:220:01:24

of the icy blast to arrive.

0:01:240:01:26

It's going to be a subtle transition,

0:01:260:01:28

but it will feel colder through Tuesday

0:01:280:01:30

and with each day this week as well.

0:01:300:01:32

So, as we move into Tuesday,

0:01:320:01:34

there'll be plenty of showers around.

0:01:340:01:36

The winds coming from a northerly direction,

0:01:360:01:38

pretty blustery,

0:01:380:01:39

so it will take the edge off the feel of things,

0:01:390:01:41

particularly in those showers -

0:01:410:01:43

four to eight degrees the overall high.

0:01:430:01:46

As we move into Tuesday night,

0:01:460:01:47

this nose of high pressure starts to build.

0:01:470:01:52

The isobars open out, the winds fall light,

0:01:520:01:55

skies clear and, at this time of year,

0:01:550:01:57

that can only mean one thing -

0:01:570:01:59

those temperatures plummeting

0:01:590:02:01

and we'll see minus five

0:02:010:02:02

to minus nine degrees

0:02:020:02:03

first thing on Wednesday morning.

0:02:030:02:05

A real widespread hard frost

0:02:050:02:07

not out of the question.

0:02:070:02:09

At least there should be some sunshine,

0:02:090:02:11

particularly through central

0:02:110:02:12

and eastern areas on Wednesday.

0:02:120:02:14

However, there is the potential

0:02:140:02:15

for some rain to pull into the south-west

0:02:150:02:17

and, as that bumps into the colder air,

0:02:170:02:19

there is a level of uncertainty

0:02:190:02:21

as to how much snow we could get at lower levels

0:02:210:02:23

and, as that tracks that little bit further south

0:02:230:02:26

and east overnight Wednesday into Thursday,

0:02:260:02:28

we could wake up to a dusting of snow

0:02:280:02:30

to the higher ground, maybe, to the Chilterns

0:02:300:02:33

and across the south-east corner,

0:02:330:02:34

but high pressure is starting to build

0:02:340:02:36

and hopefully quieten things down

0:02:360:02:38

as we move into the weekend.

0:02:380:02:40

One thing's for certain this week -

0:02:400:02:42

that cold, icy blast

0:02:420:02:43

will start to dominate the weather story

0:02:430:02:46

and that will be a shock to the system.

0:02:460:02:48

I don't want you complaining about it.

0:02:480:02:50

We've had that mild, wet weather

0:02:500:02:51

that we've been desperate to get rid of.

0:02:510:02:53

But there is uncertainty into the weekend.

0:02:530:02:55

If the low pressure nudges

0:02:550:02:57

a little bit further west,

0:02:570:02:58

it'll keep enhancing the showers.

0:02:580:03:00

If the high pressure builds,

0:03:000:03:02

that should quieten things down

0:03:020:03:04

for the weekend.

0:03:040:03:05

It still stays cold,

0:03:050:03:06

but frost will be more of an issue.

0:03:060:03:08

But I suspect

0:03:080:03:09

into the six to ten day period,

0:03:090:03:10

it looks as though the cold weather

0:03:100:03:12

is set to stay with us

0:03:120:03:13

so sights like this with early morning frost

0:03:130:03:15

is going to be quite widespread.

0:03:150:03:18

It will feel colder in the outlook,

0:03:180:03:21

frost and ice certainly an issue

0:03:210:03:22

and any showers that we get

0:03:220:03:24

could be of a wintry nature,

0:03:240:03:25

even at lower levels for a time.

0:03:250:03:27

It's getting pretty exciting

0:03:270:03:29

and chilly with it. Take care.

0:03:290:03:31

Well, there's a surprise.

0:03:320:03:32

And it's DAME Judi, by the way.

0:03:320:03:35

Halt!
