Hello. We are now nearly midway through winter

0:00:030:00:05

and after the very springlike start to the year, things are suddenly

0:00:050:00:08

feeling more wintry as we move through the week ahead.

0:00:080:00:11

So, getting colder for most of us through the course of the week.

0:00:110:00:14

There will be some showers falling as snow at times,

0:00:140:00:16

mainly on the hills,

0:00:160:00:17

but also some frost and some icy stretches overnight.

0:00:170:00:20

So Tuesday we could start with some icy patches

0:00:200:00:22

on untreated roads and surfaces.

0:00:220:00:24

Low pressure still the driving force of the weather through

0:00:240:00:27

the course of Tuesday.

0:00:270:00:28

But it is going to be a chilly start to the day.

0:00:280:00:30

So if you're heading out and about first thing, do watch out

0:00:300:00:34

for some slippery surfaces on untreated roads and pavements.

0:00:340:00:37

After that chilly start to the day, it will be another day of

0:00:370:00:40

blustery heavy showers, quite strong winds at times too.

0:00:400:00:43

The showers falling as snow on top of the hills of Scotland

0:00:430:00:45

even down to lower levels

0:00:450:00:47

for eastern Scotland for a time and we could see some sleet and snow.

0:00:470:00:50

Northern Ireland, after a very wet and windy morning, will clear up

0:00:500:00:53

by the afternoon with a return to some sunshine.

0:00:530:00:56

But heavy showers rolling in across parts of Wales into the Midlands

0:00:560:00:59

falling as snow on top of the higher ground.

0:00:590:01:02

Down towards southern and south-western parts of England

0:01:020:01:05

some drier weather through Tuesday afternoon with some sunshine.

0:01:050:01:07

Still showers lingering for eastern areas.

0:01:070:01:10

They'll be heavy at times through the course of Tuesday.

0:01:100:01:12

But with low pressure easing away towards the east as we roll

0:01:120:01:15

through into Wednesday morning, clearing skies means a drier

0:01:150:01:18

and quite a colder start to Wednesday as well.

0:01:180:01:21

Particular, in the countryside, first thing Wednesday,

0:01:210:01:23

we could see temperatures as low as -9 for sheltered glens in Scotland.

0:01:230:01:27

So a cold start with some frost

0:01:270:01:28

and again a risk of some iciness first thing.

0:01:280:01:30

Through the course of Wednesday, the best of the dry

0:01:300:01:33

and sunny weather will be for eastern areas.

0:01:330:01:35

Further west, we will start to see more cloud rolling in

0:01:350:01:38

bringing some showers and some hill snow once again.

0:01:380:01:40

As we move through the latter part of Wednesday,

0:01:400:01:42

then overnight into Thursday, low pressure still dominating

0:01:420:01:45

moving its way gradually eastwards across northern areas.

0:01:450:01:48

Some further showers and hill snow rolling their way eastwards.

0:01:480:01:51

But as we look through the middle part of the week,

0:01:510:01:53

the mild air has now disappeared down towards the south.

0:01:530:01:56

You can see the blue arrows here,

0:01:560:01:57

colder air coming in from a more north to north-westerly direction.

0:01:570:02:01

Through the day on Thursday,

0:02:010:02:02

that colder air filtering in from the west.

0:02:020:02:05

Still some showers mainly for eastern areas tending to ease away,

0:02:050:02:07

but those temperatures certainly down a notch on recent days,

0:02:070:02:11

between around 3 to 7 Celsius,

0:02:110:02:13

perhaps a little bit below average for this time of year.

0:02:130:02:16

Then rolling through into the latter part of the week, high pressure

0:02:160:02:18

in the Atlantic just starting to edge in towards our shores,

0:02:180:02:22

so that will start to ease away the showers through the day on Friday.

0:02:220:02:26

A drier story, some sunshine after a cold and frosty start.

0:02:260:02:29

Round about 3 to 7 or 8 Celsius.

0:02:290:02:31

Still that chance of some showers for eastern areas.

0:02:310:02:34

But heading through into the weekend,

0:02:340:02:36

it looks like high pressure in the Atlantic moves in across the UK.

0:02:360:02:39

We've still got a northerly airflow,

0:02:390:02:41

the isobars heading back towards the Arctic there.

0:02:410:02:44

So still a chilly story as we look towards the weekend, but for many,

0:02:440:02:48

we should have a largely dry and fairly bright weekend to come.

0:02:480:02:51

With some sunshine, although things will be feeling cold and frosty.

0:02:510:02:54

Beyond the weekend, on into next week, what we're going

0:02:540:02:57

to start to see is still a northerly airflow, so some chilly conditions.

0:02:570:03:00

There could well be some snow, mainly on the hills

0:03:000:03:02

but even for a time down to lower levels

0:03:020:03:04

for north-eastern parts of the country, in particular.

0:03:040:03:06

Further south and west, that is where we are likely to see some frosty

0:03:060:03:08

but bright weather.

0:03:080:03:10

The best of the shelter to be found further south and west.

0:03:100:03:12

So through the course of next week,

0:03:120:03:14

it will be a cold start to the week once again.

0:03:140:03:17

Often, though, looking dry and bright.

0:03:170:03:19

Wintry showers mainly in the north and east

0:03:190:03:22

and things could turn milder once again

0:03:220:03:24

as we look towards the end of next week.

0:03:240:03:26

Lots happening in the weather, we'll keep you up to date

0:03:260:03:29

with the weather for the week ahead right here.

0:03:290:03:31

I have principles...

0:03:340:03:35

..and I stick to 'em,

0:03:370:03:39

but I'm not a stupid man.
