Hello, thanks for joining me | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
for this extended look at the weather forecast | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
over the next five to ten days or so. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
There is considerable uncertainty in our forecast, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
even in the shorter range, in fact - | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
partly down to the fact that we've got a very unusual Ex-Hurricane Alex | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
out in the Atlantic. Very unusual for January. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
It won't affect our weather directly, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
it's heading northwards towards Greenland, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
but what it is doing is adding extra energy into the jet stream, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
the driving force of our weather, really. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
And that's meaning more energy in the jet stream, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
more complications for the computer models, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
so there's big disagreement between computer models about exactly | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
what is going to happen in our weather over the next ten days or so. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
But we're certainly in the cold air at the moment, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
so a chilly weekend ahead. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
During Saturday, many areas having a crisp, bright day. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
Eastern counties of England more prone to seeing some wintry showers | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
coming in from the North Sea. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
Sleet and snow inland, likely to be rain around the coast. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Temperatures about one to three in the North, further south, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
five, six or seven for most of us. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
But a largely dry, very pleasant day to come, despite the fact | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
that temperatures are certainly on the chilly side. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Then later on, Saturday night into Sunday, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
we see a period of rain, sleet and snow | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
across the north-west of the country. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
The detail is still quite uncertain | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
on exactly where we'll see any wintry flurry, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
so keep tuned to the forecast over the next few days. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Certainly a very chilly start to Sunday morning. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
Now, through the day on Sunday, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
we have got high pressure out towards the south and the east of the UK. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
A frontal system here in the Atlantic, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
trying to nudge its way in from the west, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
but it bumps into that high pressure, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
so most places yet again on Sunday, we will see a largely dry day. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
Likely to be some sleet and snow flurries across parts of Wales, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
perhaps into the Midlands, up towards western Scotland. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
Eastern areas likely to stay dry, crisp and bright. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
Two or three degrees here. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
But you'll notice that those temperatures from the south-west | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
just starting to nudge up by a few degrees. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Then late on Sunday, and on into Monday, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
this front starts to head into western areas. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
Looks like perhaps it may stall | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
and many eastern areas keeping under the influence of higher pressure, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
so likely on Monday that we'll see crisp, dry conditions | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
continuing in the East, just two or three degrees. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Whereas further west, some rain, some sleet and some snow. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
And a similar story into Tuesday, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
as this frontal system tries to edge in from the west or the south-west. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Things will turn milder and wetter, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
but as that sleet and rain bumps into the colder air, we could see, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
through the middle part of the week, some disruptive snowfall. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
Again, the details are very uncertain, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
but through the middle of the week, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
we could well see a period of sleet and some potentially heavy snow, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
before it likely turns back to rain again. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
So, this is the middle part of the week. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Wednesday, we're likely to see this frontal system probably fizzling out, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
dying a death through the middle portion of the country. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
But before it does, some sleet and some potentially heavy snow possible | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
as it moves its way gradually northwards and eastwards, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
but temperatures recovering | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
by the time we get to Wednesday and on into Thursday. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
So, late next week now - it's likely | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
that we're going to be having an area of high pressure once again, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
starting to build towards the east of the country, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
keeping things fairly quiet and fairly dry too. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
Also keeping these frontal systems at bay out in the Atlantic, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
So high pressure probably in charge, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
particularly for many eastern, north-eastern areas | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
through the latter part of next week. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
But eventually, when we move on to next weekend, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
It looks likely that high pressure edges away towards the east, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
so that will open the doors for fronts to head in from the Atlantic. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
This is a very simplified representation, of course, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
of the fronts coming in from the Atlantic. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
But the outlook through the next six to ten days or so - | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
a cold start to the period, a risk of some disruptive snow, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
turning milder and more unsettled | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
as we head towards the end of the period. Bye-bye. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31 |
